James Calvin McDowell
Connellsville
James Calvin McDowell, 82, of Connellsville, died Tuesday, Aug. 1, 2000, in the Highlands Hospital, Connellsville. He was born in Connellsville, July 14, 1918, and resided in Connellsville during his entire lifetime. He was predeceased by his parents, Charles Widdup McDowell and Etta Minerd McDowell, in 1971 and 1947, respectively. He was married Sept. 17, 1940, to Marie Hawkins, a daughter of the late Henry and Martha Jane Showman Hawkins. He was widowed on April 17, 1993. Jim retired from the railroad in 1980, at which time he was commuting to his job as foreman in Akron, Ohio. Between weekends, he lived in Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio, with his youngest sister, Marjorie May McDowell Beighley, who died in July 1986. He was also predeceased by his older brother, Raymond Arnold McDowell, and his younger sister, Anna June McDowell McClain, both in 1978. J.C. enjoyed his extended family, and spent much of his free time visiting with friends and families of his children and nieces and nephews. His oldest son, Charles Henry McDowell, lives in Champion. His second son, Robert Arnold McDowell, lives on Franklin Avenue in Connellsville with his wife, Shirley Louise Harford McDowell. Jim's two grandchildren are the children of Bob and Shirley. His oldest grandchild, Eric Lee McDowell, lives in Rome, Ga., with his wife, Jackie, and their three children, Kyle, Kara and Ashley. His granddaughter, Debora Ann McDowell Martz, lives in Sanford, N.C., with her husband, Rob, and two children, Sean and Nichole. James served in the National Guard from 1935 to 1942. He was also a member of the Otterbein United Methodist Church, King Solomon's Lodge #346 F&AM, Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite Valley of Uniontown, the Comas Club of Connellsville, and the Fraternal Order of Eagles #493 of Connellsville. He was also a life member of the South Connellsville Rod and Gun Club, and a member of the National Wild Turkey Federation, and Ducks Unlimited. Friends and relatives of James McDowell will be received in the BROOKS FUNERAL HOME INC., 111 E. Green St., Connellsville, Wednesday from 7 to 9 p.m. and Thursday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. His funeral service will be held Friday at 11 a.m. in the funeral home with the Rev. Elmer Reamer officiating. Interment will follow in Green Ridge Memorial Park, Pennsville, near his wife and parents. King Solomon's Lodge #346 F&AM will conduct a service Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. in the funeral home.

Charles J. McHugh, 67, of Sebastian, Fla., formerly of White hall, died Sunday, July 30, 2000. He was the husband of Marlene Worman McHugh; Father of Deborah Cantwell of Greentown, Ind., Barbara McHugh of Sebastian, Fla. and Charles McHugh Jr. of Baldwin; grandfather of Christine and Elizabeth Cantwell, and Russell and Jeremy McHugh. Mr. McHugh was the youngest of nine children and is survived by his brothers and sister, Robert McHugh of Johnstown, Pa, Harold McHugh of Salem, Ohio, Margaret Davidson of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. and Donald McHugh of Bethel Park. Friends received from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday and from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday in JOHN F. Estella (Betty) R. Zacharias McMahon, 77, died Tuesday, Aug. 1, 2000 in Forbes Hospice. Born Nov. 14, 1922 in the Mount Washington section of Pittsburgh, she was the daughter of the late Earl B. and Helen E. Vey Zacharias. Mrs. McMahon worked as a retail sales clerk. She was a member of Chapter of O.E.S. No. 526; Pittsburgh Observatory A.A.R.P. No. 1435; Central Allegheny A.A.R.P. No. 3556; and the Our Lady Queen of Peace Christian Mothers. Survivors include her close friend, John Manny Shiring of Ross; a niece, Jane Zacharias; two nephews, Thomas J. Zacharias of Ohio and William J. Zacharias of Utah; and two great nieces. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother, William J. Zacharias. Emma Grace Mull, 88, of Latrobe, died Monday, July 31, 2000, in Latrobe Area Hospital. She was born April 21, 1912, in Latrobe, a daughter of the late William A. and Sarah B. (Allshouse) Mull. Emma was a life member of the Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church in Latrobe. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by several brothers and sisters . She is survived by two brothers , Raymond A. Mull of Parma, Ohio, and Robert W. Mull of Florida; two sisters , Leila Shirey of Chicago, Ill., and Gladys Stelef of Wellsville, Ohio; a number of nieces and nephews, including her nephew, George Eugene Mull and his wife, Josephine, of Derry; and her good friend, Santa Rhome of Greensburg. Thelma L. Hoffman Mulvehill, 91, of Level Green, died Sunday, July 30, 2000, at Forbes Regional Health Center, Monroeville. She was born April 1, 1909, in Snowshoe, a daughter of the late John and Martha Campbell Hoffman. She was a member of the Methodist Church in Tyrone. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Hugh Mulvehill, in 1995; two brothers , Orace and Fredrick Hoffman; and a sister, Bertha Forcey. Richard Cowan Sanner, 85, of Southwest Greensburg, died Sunday, July 30, 2000, at the Integrated Health Services of Greater Pittsburgh, Greensburg. He was born June 20, 1915, in Greensburg, a son of the late Samuel S. and Minnie Wentzel Sanner. Prior to his retirement, he had been employed by the Peoples Natural Gas Co. in Pittsburgh for 41 years. He was a veteran of World War II, having served in the U.S. Army Medical Corps. He was a very active member of the Greensburg Church of the Brethren, where he had served as Sunday school superintendent, a Sunday school teacher and sang in the church choir. Richard was also a volunteer with the Tri-City Meals-on-Wheels and also at the Westmoreland Manor. He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Louise Blystone Sanner; a daughter, Carol Sanner Hart of Greensburg; two grandsons, Jason Hart and his wife, Sharon, and Eric Hart, all of Atlanta, Ga.; five sisters , Evelyn Wineman of Youngwood, Mary Smith of New Stanton RD1, Janet Gongaware of Youngwood, Helen Thomas of Greensburg, and Blanche Chatlos of Hunker RD1; and a number of nieces and nephews. Friends will be received at the BARNHART FUNERAL HOME, 505 E. She was a member of the Penn Hebron Garden Club of Penn Hills and was an avid bridge player. She is survived by her husband of 66 years, Herman G. "Mike" Urbach; a daughter, Patricia Caughey and her husband, Roger, of North Huntingdon; a granddaughter, Wendy Milne and her husband, Scott; also her beloved pet dog, Pandee.
