Playford Hawkins
Connellsville

Playford Hawkins, 90, of Connellsville, died Sunday, July 30, 2000, in Highlands Hospital, Connellsville. He was born Nov. 12, 1909 in Connellsville, a son of the late Henry and Martha Jane Showman Hawkins. He was a graduate of Connellsville High School and he was a retired milkman for the Farmers Dairy of Connellsville. He was a member of the B.P.O. Elks #503 of Connellsville, Teamsters Union Local #491 and a member of the First Christian Church of Connellsville. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his wife, Dorothy J. Leighty Hawkins on April 17, 1994; three sisters , Jean May, Marie McDowell and Geraldine Sechrist; and a brother, Milton Hawkins. He is survived by two sons , Ronald A. Hawkins and his wife, Donna Jean, of Flatwoods and David S. Hawkins and his wife, Anne, of Camp Hill, Pa.; three grandchildren, Jeffrey Hawkins and his wife, Barbara, Christin Hawkins, and Scott Hawkins and his wife, Kristi, all of Harrisburg; a great-granddaughter, Cecelia Hawkins; a brother-in-law, James McDowell of Connellsville; a sister-in-law, Martha Lubic of Connellsville; and numerous nieces and nephews. Friends will be received in the BROOKS FUNERAL HOME INC., 111 E. Green St., Connellsville, Tuesday from 2 to 9 p.m. Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. in the funeral home with the Rev. Elmer Reamer officiating. Interment will follow in Green Ridge Memorial Park. The B.P.O. Elks #503 will conduct a memorial service at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday in the funeral home. In lieu of flowers the family suggests memorial contributions be made to the First Christian Church, Connellsville, in memory of Mr. Hawkins.

Catherine A. (Ruddell) Hirtz
Baldwin

Catherine A. (Ruddell) Hirtz of Baldwin, died on Saturday, July 29, 2000. She is survived by her husband, Richard W. Hirtz; a daughter, Margaret Piskor; grandchildren Catherine Kwiatkowski and Emil Piscor Jr.; great-grandchildren, Raeleen and Annalee Kwiatkowski; one sister, Rose Chuha; one brother, Thoas Ruddell. Friends will be received from 1 to 4 and 6 to 9 p.m. TUESDAY ONLY in CIESLAK & TATKO FUNERAL HOME, INC., 2935 Brownsville Road, Brentwood, where there will be a funeral prayer at 9:15 a.m. Wednesday. A Christian Funeral Mass will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday in St. Albert the Great Church.

Sophie Fasano Horak
Mt. Pleasant

Sophie Fasano Horak, 93, of Mt. Pleasant, died Sunday, July 30, 2000, at Frick Hospital, Mt. Pleasant. She was born March 28, 1907, in Mt. Pleasant, a daughter of the late Stanley and Catherine Zelenski Kubiak. Mrs. Horak was most known for her homemade pizza, known to Mt. Pleasant as Sophie's Pizza for over 30 years. She was a member of St. Pius X R.C. Church of Mt. Pleasant and the Son's of Italy Ladies Auxiliary. In addition to her parents, Sophie was preceded in death by her first husband, Anthony Fasano; and her second husband, Charles Horak, in 1969; three sons , Martin, Anthony, and Robert Fasano; her grandson, Robbie Fasano; six brothers , Frank Hudak, Michael, Stanley, John, Pete, and Tom Kubiak; and a sister, Catherine Truxel. She is survived by her loving family, daughter, Charlotte Gonofsky and her husband, John, of Mt. Pleasant; two sons , Charles W. Horak of Greenville, Pa., and Lawrence P. Horak of Scottdale; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and a brother, Henry Kubiak of Scottdale. Friends will be received from 2 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at GALONE-CARUSO'S, 204 Eagle St., Mt. Pleasant. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated in St. Pius X R.C. Church, Mt. Pleasant, Wednesday, Aug. 2, at 10 a.m. with Father Michael W. Matusak as celebrant. Interment St. Pius X Parish Cemetery, Mt. Pleasant.

Florence E. Johnson
Herminie

Florence E. Johnson, 95, of Herminie (Keystone), died Sunday, July 30, 2000, at the Hempfield Manor, Hempfield Township. She was born Jan. 19, 1905, in Luxor, Pa., a daughter of the late William and Melinda (Hixenbaugh) Thomas. Mrs. Johnson was a piano teacher, she taught the piano in her home for over 40 years. Mrs. Johnson was the oldest member of the Herminie United Methodist Church. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, George E. Johnson Sr., in 1966; a brother, William Thomas; and a granddaughter, Karen Lash Coleman. Mrs. Johnson is survived by her son, George Johnson Jr. of Pittsburgh; a daughter, Mrs. Betty Lash and her husband, the Rev. Donald Lash, of Greensburg; also four grandchildren, Christopher and Daniel Lash, and Barbara and Kerri Johnson; and a great-grandson, Corey Lash. Friends will be received at the JOSEPH W. NICKELS FUNERAL HOME INC., Herminie, Tuesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m., where funeral services will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m., with Pastor Chuck F. Hildbold Jr., officiating.

Helen (Gagich) Karan
Wall

Helen (Gagich) Karan, of Wall, died Saturday, July 29, 2000. Beloved wife of William Karan. Dear mother of Mindy, Wendy and Bill. Loving grandmother of Larissa, Garrett, Will and Taylor. Sister of Mildred Vorkapic, Ruby Andrich, Mary Salopek, John, William, Joseph and Daniel Gagich. Also numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, Srdan and Mary (Oreb) Gagich; a sister, Jean Gagich; and a brother, Robert Gagich. There will be no visitation. Interment will be private. The family suggests memorial contributions be made to the Christian Fellowship Academy, Teachers Mission Fund, RD1, Jeannette, PA 15644. Helen M. Kontowicz

Helen M. Kontowicz, 81, died Saturday, July 29, 2000, in UPMC Shadyside, Pittsburgh. Mrs. Kontowicz was a homemaker. Survivors include a son, Robert Kontowicz of Hampton; three grandchildren; and a great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph Kontowicz; and a son, Regis Konley. There will be no visitation. Services and burial will be private. Arrangements are being handled by NEELY FUNERAL HOME, Shaler.

Herman Kuehn
Murrysville

Herman Kuehn, 72, of Murrysville, died Saturday, July 29, 2000, at his home. He was born Feb. 15, 1928, in Cincinnati, Ohio, son of Sophie Martin Kuehn of Zanesville, Ohio, and the late Karl Kuehn. He was a retired sales manager for Combustion Engineering Refractories, Monroeville, with 38 years of service. He also served in the Air Force Reserves. In addition to his mother , he is survived by his wife, Betty June Mitcheltree Kuehn; a daughter, Patricia Cosgrove and her husband, Mike, of Mt. Lebanon; two sons , Mark Kuehn and his wife, Sandy, of Murrysville and Daniel Kuehn and his wife, Holly, of Washington Township; two grandchildren, Tyler and Zachary Kuehn; two sisters , Mary Sess of Marietta, Ga., and Gertrude Gallo of Richmond, Va.; and two brothers , Walter Kuehn of Columbus, Ohio, and Karl Kuehn Jr. of Zanesville, Ohio. Visitation Monday 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the JOHN T. HART FUNERAL HOME, Murrysville. Private services will be held Tuesday. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the UPMC Hospice Care, 5818 Forbes Avenue, 3rd Floor Pittsburgh, PA 15217.

Jennie M. Kuriluk

Jennie M. Kuriluk, 78, of Southwest Greensburg, died Sunday, July 30, 2000, in the Westmoreland Regional Hospital, Greensburg. She was born June 10, 1922, in Hempfield Township, a daughter of the late Ivan and Manda Gracan Katich. Prior to retirement, she had been employed by the Westmoreland Regional Hospital, Greensburg, and was a member of the Church of St. Paul. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Frank J. Kuriluk on May 15, 1996. Survived by two sons , Frank M. Kuriluk of Butler and Dennis J. Kuriluk of Southwest Greensburg; a brother, George Katich of South Greensburg; a sister, Annie Katich of Greensburg; and several nieces and nephews. Friends will be received at the BACHA FUNERAL HOME INC., 516 Stanton at Green streets, Greensburg, Tuesday from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Funeral Liturgy will be held in the funeral home Wednesday at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Daniel C. Mahoney officiating. Interment will follow in the Greensburg Catholic Cemetery, Hempfield Township.

Frances E. Mathias

Frances E. Mathias of Brookline, died on Friday, July 28, 2000. She is survived by one daughter, Patricia Southorn of White hall; one son, Charles Mathias, of Jamestown, Pa.; one son-in-law, Robert Southorn; one daughter-in-law, Mary Lou Mathias; three granddaughters, Laurie, Bethanne, and Joanne; two grandsons, Robert, and Charles; nine great-grandchildren. Friends will be received from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday in JOHN F. SLATER FUNERAL HOME, INC., 4201 Brownsville Road, Brentwood, where a funeral prayer will be at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday in St. Gabriel of the Sorrowful Virgin Church. Memorial contributions may be made to: St. Gabriel of the Sorrowful Virgin Church, White hall.

Elizabeth McWilliams
Level Green

Elizabeth "Betty" McWilliams, 80, Level Green, died Saturday, July 29, 2000, in the Forbes Regional Health Center, Monroeville. She was born on July 29, 1920, in Hamilton, Scotland, the daughter of the late John and Helen Duff Percival. She was a member of the Level Green Presbyterian Church and its Ruth Circle, a former member of the Level Green Women's Club, and in her younger years involved with the PTA and helped organize recreation and the playgrounds in Level Green. Betty was an avid reader, gardener and loved to travel, she also loved her children, grandchildren, friends and had a real love for Scotland and its culture. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a sister, Jean Steffey. She is survived by her husband, Lewis McWilliams; a son, Jack and wife, Arleen, of Glenshaw; a daughter, Beverly Jones and husband, Allen, of Washington D.C.; three grandchildren; and two stepgrandchildren. Friends will be received at the JOHN M. DOBRINICK FUNERAL HOME, 429 Duquesne Ave., Trafford, Monday from 7 to 9 p.m. and Tuesday 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Funeral services will be Wednesday at 11 a.m. in the funeral home with the Rev. Dr. R. Dennis Macaleer officiating. Interment will follow in the Penn-Lincoln Memorial Park, North Huntingdon.

Teresa (Seethaler) Mihm
Mt. Lebanon

Teresa (Seethaler) Mihm, 93, of Mt. Lebanon, died Sunday, July 30, 2000. She was the wife of the late Eugene O. Mihm Sr.; mother of Mary Grace "Gaye" Mansell, Eugene "Buddy" Mihm Jr., John R. Mihm and Carolyn F. Sopher; sister of Dolores Seethaler and Margaret Just. She is also survived by 12 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Mrs. Mihm was a legal secretary for Robert Dugan at the Pittsburgh District Attorney's office. She was an active volunteer for the Salvation Army. She also served as a Republican committee woman in Mt. Lebanon and started the first Girl Scout troop at St. Bernard Church in Mt. Lebanon. Viewing hours have been omitted. A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered in St. Bernard Church, Monday (today) at 10 a.m. Burial will follow in Mt. Lebanon Cemetery. The family suggests memorials in lieu of flowers to: The Angel Fund at St. Bernard Church, 311 Washington Road, Mt. Lebanon, PA 15216. Arrangements by LAUGHLIN MEMORIAL CHAPEL, Mt. Lebanon.
