William A. Durstine Sr.

William A. Durstine Sr., 67, of Champion, died suddenly at his camp, Saturday, July 22, 2000, in Smicksburg, Pa. He was born Oct. 21, 1932, at Champion, a son of the late William F. Durstine and Emma Grace Blystone Durstine Butler. He was retired from USX Steel, Edgar Thomson Works, where he had been employed for over 30 years. He was also the owner of the Durstine Auto Wreckers at Champion and was a member of the County Line Church of the Brethren. He was a great outdoorsman who loved hunting and fishing, camping, and spending time with his Amish friends. He will be greatly missed by all. He is survived by his wife, Elaine J. Williams Durstine, to whom he was married for 47 years; two sons , William A. Durstine and wife, Wava, of Acme and Robert Scott Durstine and wife, Lori, of Somerset; two daughters , Arlene Freeman and husband, Paul, of Stahlstown and Beverly Striner and husband, Robert, of Connellsville; grandchildren, Stephanie Durstine, Teresa Durstine, William Durstine, Deanna Smith, Tina Shawley, Jonathan Freeman, Justin Striner, Jessica Striner, and Jacob Striner; stepgrandchildren, Brandy Freeman and Paul Freeman; and a great-grandchild, Tanner Smith, all of whom he adored; four sisters , Mrs. Jeanne Santucci and husband, Paul, of Mammoth, Arlene Sleasman and husband, Donald, and Shirley Hamlin and husband, Thomas, both of Findlay, Ohio, and Janet Durstine of Mammoth. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by two infant children, Patty and David; a brother, Milton Leroy Durstine; and a sister, Gladys Durstine. Friends will be received at the CLYDE BROOKS FUNERAL HOME, Route 711, Melcroft, today and Tuesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m., where service will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Barry Conn officiating. Committal and interment will follow in Mt. Nebo Cemetery.

Ruth I. Edgecombe, 81, of Ross, died Saturday, July 22, 2000 in Sherwood Oaks, Cranberry. She was born October 21, 1918 in Pittsburgh, daughter of the late Chauncey E. Hughes and Ruth E. Ogilvie. Mrs. Edgecombe was a homemaker. For over fifty years, she was a member of Hiland Presbyterian Church, Ross, and Highland Country Club. Mrs. Edgecombe was an avid golfer and duplicate bridge player. She is survived by one son, Wallace E. Edgecombe, Jr., and his wife Ellen B. of McCandless; one grandson, John E. Edgecombe; one granddaughter, Carolyn Smith. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Wallace E. Edgecombe Sr., and a brother, William Hughes. Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday in H.P. Patricia Lee (Voltz) Esken, 39, of Latrobe, died Thursday, July 20, 2000. She was born Oct. 23, 1960, in Pittsburgh, a daughter of William Thomas Voltz of Blairsville and Joanne P. (Noonan) Voltz of Pittsburgh. Survivors include a son, James A. Esken; two daughters , Jennifer Lynn Esken and Christina M. Esken; a brother, William T. Voltz of McKeesport; and four sisters , Sharon Voltz of McKeesport, Carrie Guerico of Manor, Robin Voltz of Whitaker and Renea Sharkey of Pittsburgh. Friends received Sunday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the E.J. RODGERS FUNERAL HOME, 140 Race St., Manor, where services will be held Monday at 10 a.m. with the Rev. Darlene Williams officiating. Ray Fusaro, 71, died Saturday, July 22, 2000, in UPMC Passavant, McCandless. Born Sept. 8, 1928, in Pescara, Italy, he was the son of the late Achilla and Isolina Schiarra Fusaro. Mr. Fusaro was a retired steel worker from J&L Steel in Hazelwood, and was most recently working as a landscaper for S.A.E. in Cranberry. He was a member of Holy Sepulcher Roman Catholic Church in Middlesex. Survivors include his wife, Carol Martin Fusaro; a daughter, Mary Shaffer of Saxonburg; two sons , David Fusaro of Butler and Donald Fusaro of Reading; and six grandchildren. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Michael Fusaro; and a brother, Pete Fusaro. Friends will be received from 7 to 9 Monday and 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday in McDONALD-AEBERLI FUNERAL HOME, 238 Crowe Ave., Mars. John Alan Groome, 43, died Saturday, July 22, 2000, in his home. Mr. Groome was employed by Pittsburgh Vision Services. Survivors include his wife, Cynthia Jean McIntosh Groome; a daughter, Heather Marie Groome; his Father , Frank Groome of Binghamton, N.Y.; his mother , Shirley Vinson of Troy; three brothers , Randy Groome of Binghamton, N.Y., Kevin Vinson of Troy and Alan Vinson of Florida; and a sister, Esther Howe of Troy. Frances Grunwald, 95, of Belle Vernon (Arnold City), died Sunday, July 23, 2000, at the home of her daughter, Margaret Grant. She was born Aug. 11, 1904, in Mt. Pleasant, the daughter of the late John and Catherine Gasian Walchock. She was a member of the Epiphany of Our Lord Roman Catholic Church, Monessen. She was predeceased by her husband, Joseph N. Grunwald Sr. on Sept. 28, 1982; a son, Joseph N. Grunwald Jr. on March 29, 1954; and a granddaughter, Diane Brautigam, in 1972. Surviving are her children, Theodore Grunwald and wife, Patty, of Monessen, Frank Grunwald of Arnold City, Elizabeth Peduti of Marianna, Helen Brautigam of Monessen, Rose Galaski and husband, Steve, of Monessen, Margaret Grant and husband, Gary, of Rostraver Township and Frances Grunwald of Belle Vernon; 15 grandchildren; and 26 great-grandchildren. Harry C. Hutchinson Sr., 82, of Ligonier, died Saturday, July 22, 2000, in Latrobe Area Hospital. He was born March 9, 1918, in Connellsville, a son of the late Thomas Clifford and Myrtle Musgrove Hutchinson. Prior to his retirement in 1981, he was employed as a heavy equipment operator by the Ligonier Township Supervisors. He also owned and operated Hutchinson's Auto Repair in Ligonier for many years. He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Alice Irene McLean Hutchinson; three daughters , Mrs. Dean (Betty) Iscrupe of Ligonier, Mrs. James (Alice) Melville of Latrobe and Mrs. Charles (Dorothy) Tice of Niles, Ohio; four sons , Harry C. Jr. (and wife, Jean) Hutchinson of Ligonier, William J. (and wife, Varene) Hutchinson of New Florence RD1, Donald L. (and wife, Beverly) Hutchinson and Timothy D. (and wife, Deborah) Hutchinson, all of Ligonier; 20 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; a great-great-grandson; a sister, Elizabeth Clifford of North Canton, Ohio; and three brothers , Frank L. Hutchinson and Joseph W. Hutchinson, both of Ligonier, and John M. Hutchinson of Virginia. Donna L. Kruel, 53, of Marietta, Pa., formerly of Greensburg, died Friday evening, July 21, 2000, in the Essa Flory Hospice Center, Lancaster, following a lengthy illness. She was born in Herminie, the daughter of Robert B. Crossland of North Huntingdon and Alma Rothwell Crossland of Marietta. She was married to John S. Kruel Jr., and they celebrated their 34th anniversary June 11, 2000. She worked for 20 years, until her illness, as a secretary for the Masonic Children's Home. She attended Pennsylvania State University, York Campus. She was a member of St. Mark's United Methodist Church, Mt. Joy, where she was active in the handbell choir. She was the neighborhood chairperson for the Girl Scouts of America in Westmoreland County, and organized the water garden tour for the 78th annual Lancaster County Firemen's Convention. She enjoyed water gardening and visiting her family's cabin in Clearfield County. Survivors include a son, John H. Kruel, at home; a daughter, Leslie A. and husband, John Pierce, of Elizabethtown; a brother, Robert D. Crossland and wife, Barb, of Pittsburgh; and two grandchildren. Relatives and friends will be received Tuesday from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the HEILIG FUNERAL HOME, 21 W. Main St., Mt. Joy. Funeral service will be held Wednesday in St. Mark's United Methodist Church, 27 E. Main St., Mt. Joy, at 10:30 a.m. (viewing one hour prior to service). The Rev. Donald E. Zechman and the Rev. Mary Berry Linkhauer, 94, formerly of Leeper and Mt. Lebanon, and recently of Greensburg and McKees Rocks, died early Saturday morning, July 22, 2000, in St. Anne's Home, Greensburg. Born Dec. 25, 1905, in New Eagle, she was the daughter of the late John E. and Kathryn Smyth Berry. She was married on June 6, 1934, to George Linkhauer, who preceded her in death on Feb. 23, 1994. Mrs. Linkhauer taught for eight years in the Duquesne public schools. She was a member of Holy Name, St. Bernard, Our Lady of Grace and St. Angela Merici parishes in the Pittsburgh diocese, and St. Mary's Church in Crown, Erie diocese. She founded and participated in mission groups in several parishes, and was a member of the Christian Mothers, the South Hills Catholic Women's Club and the LCBA. Mrs. Linkhauer is survived by a son, John W. Linkhauer of McKeesport; two daughters , Kay Sepan and her husband, Edward, of Leeper (formerly of Crafton) and Sister Vivien Linkhauer, S.C., of Greensburg; 10 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by three brothers , Leland T., Robert W. and John A. Berry.
