J. William Rutledge, Monongahela

J. William "Skip" Rutledge, 74, of Monongahela, died Sunday, July 16, 2000, at his home. He was born July 27, 1925, in Fayette City, a son of the late James W. Sr. and Edythe McKnight Rutledge. He was a retired teacher in the Ringgold Area school district, where he taught English. He was a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania at California, Pa., and a masters graduate of the University of Pittsburgh. He was a veteran of World War II, having served in the U.S. Army. He is survived by four sisters , Mrs. Louise Davis of Dunlevy, Mrs. Jean R. Sherman of Troy, N.Y., Mrs. Betty Waugaman of Belle Vernon and Mrs. Ruth Grazzini of Richland, Wash.; a brother, John Rutledge of Pleasant Hills; four nieces and two nephews. There will be no visitation, but relatives and friends are welcome to attend the interment service Tuesday, July 18, at 1 p.m. in the Mt. Nebo Cemetery, Champion, Pa. The family would appreciate contributions to the American Cancer Society, 241 4th Ave., Pittsburgh, PA 15222, or the Leukemia Society, 2 Gateway Center, Pittsburgh, PA 15222. Thomas Salany, Trafford

Thomas Salany, 69, of Trafford, died Monday, July 17, 2000, in the I.H.S. at Mountain View, Unity Township. He was born Oct. 31, 1930, in Wall, Pa., a son of the late Theodore and Mary Salina (Miljus) Salany. He was a member of the St. Regis Church, a veteran of the Korean War serving in the U.S. Army, and a member of the Trafford American Legion Post #331. He was a retired employee of W.A.B.C.O. in Wilmerding. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers , Michael, John and Frank; and two sisters , Stella and Helen. He is survived by his wife, Virginia Caruso Salany; a son, Thomas T. Salany of Trafford; four sisters , Mary Guzzo of Monroeville, Daisey Smeltz of Ohio, Katy Corletto of Wilmerding and Ann Miller of Port Vue; and six grandchildren. Friends will be received at the JOHN M. DOBRINICK FUNERAL HOME, 429 Duquesne Ave., Trafford, Tuesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated Wednesday at 9:30 a.m. in St. Regis Church with the Rev. James D. Tringhese as celebrant. Interment will follow in the New St. Joseph Cemetery, North Versailles.

Mathius J. Slobodnik, West Mifflin

Mathius J. "Matt" Slobodnik, of West Mifflin, on Monday, July 17, 2000. Beloved husband of the late Margaret Krizan Slobodnik. Father of Teresa Pekarcik and Matthew Slobodnik, both of Herminie. Brother of Joseph of West Mifflin and the late Rudolph, John, Johanna and George Slobodnik. Grandfather of Cara and Erin Pekarcik and Matthew James Slobodnik. Friends will be received at the SAVOLSKIS-WASIK-GLENN FUNERAL HOME INC., 3501 Main St., Munhall, Wednesday from 2 to 9 p.m. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated Thursday at 10 a.m. in the Resurrection Church, West Mifflin. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus #4310, serving as past Faithful Navigator, and was a member of the D.A.V. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II.

Audrey W. (Walker) Smith, Munhall

Audrey W. (Walker) Smith, 72, of Munhall, died Monday, July 17, 2000. She retired in 1990 as an administrative assistant with the Boy Scouts of America, East Valley Area Council. Wife of the late Charles L. Smith Jr. mother of Charles and wife, Barbara T. Smith, of Florida and Clifford and wife, Helen W. Smith, of Plum Borough. Special friend of Donald Blattner. Sister of Irma Vivio. Grandmother of Christine and Charles J. Smith. Friends will be received Tuesday from 7 to 9 p.m. and Wednesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the GEORGE IRVIN GREEN FUNERAL HOME INC., 3511 Main St., Munhall. Services will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. in the Homestead Park United Methodist Church. Memorial donations may be made to the Homestead Park United Methodist Church, 4231 Shady Ave., Munhall, PA 15120.

Andrew F. Vario, Greensburg

Andrew F. "Sonny" Vario, 80, of Greensburg, died Sunday, July 16, 2000, at his home. He was born Jan. 16, 1920, in Greensburg, a son of the late Gaetano and Frances Mielle Vario. Prior to retirement, he had been a self-employed carpenter, and later a correctional officer for the Pennsylvania State Correctional Institute, in its work release program. He was a member of Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church, Greensburg. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Carmella (Emanuele) Vario, on Dec. 19, 1995; and a sister, Margaret Pickford. He is survived by two sons , Neil A. and his wife, Karen Vario, of Trauger and Keith F. Vario of Greensburg; a grandson, Aaron A. Vario; a brother, Joseph J. and his wife, Shirley Vario, of Jamestown, N.Y.; and several nieces and nephews. Friends were received at the BACHA FUNERAL HOME INC., 516 Stanton at Green streets, Greensburg, Monday from 7 to 9 p.m. and will be received Tuesday 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. A blessing service will be held in the funeral home Wednesday at 9 a.m., followed by a Funeral Mass to be celebrated at 9:30 a.m. in Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church, Greensburg. Interment will follow in the Greensburg Catholic Cemetery, Hempfield Township. The family asks that contributions take the form of Spiritual Bouquets (Masses) in Mr. Vario's name.

Dorothy M. Ebeling Werner, Jeannette

Dorothy M. Ebeling Werner, 94, beloved mother , grandmother, great- grandmother and last surviving member of the Ebeling family, died Saturday, July 15, 2000, in the Monsour Medical Center, Jeannette. She was born Dec. 22, 1906, in Pittsburgh, a daughter of the late Charles and Christine Hartman Ebeling. Prior to her retirement, she was employed by the former G.C. Murphy Co. of Jeannette. Dorothy was a member of the First Baptist Church of Jeannette. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Philip W. Werner, in 1988; a brother, Carl Ebeling; and two sisters , Vera Miller and Lillian Mae Smith. She is survived by a daughter, Shirley M. DeMatteo and her husband, Sam; a grandson, John DeMatteo and his wife, Sandee, all of Jeannette; three great-grandchildren, Erin, Tyler and Briana; two nieces; a nephew; six great-nieces; and a great-nephew. Friends were received at the JOHN V. GRAZIANO FUNERAL HOME INC., 228 North Second St., Jeannette, Monday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 11 a.m. in the funeral home, with Pastor Donald E. Walls officiating. Interment will follow in the Jeannette Memorial Park, Penn Township. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Diabetes Association, 300 Penn Center Blvd., Suite 700, Pittsburgh, PA 15235.

Arthur H. Andersen, Santa Cruz, Calif. Formerly of Adams

Arthur H. Andersen, 81, of Santa Cruz, Calif., formerly of Adams Township, died Sunday, July 16, 2000. Born July 30, 1918, in Providence, R.I., he was the son of the late Arthur H. and Janet (Muir) Andersen. Beloved husband of the late Charlotte Patricia (Swanger) Andersen. Survived by two children, David A. Andersen of Long Beach, Calif., and Ruth L. Cuzick of Santa Cruz, Calif. Also three grandchildren, Christian A. Cuzick of San Francisco, Calif., Matthew C. Cuzick and Gabriel L. Cuzick, both of Santa Cruz, Calif.; and a great-grandson, Carson Matthew Cuzick. Friends received Wednesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the SCHELLHAAS FUNERAL HOME LTD., 5864 Heckert Road, Bakerstown. Funeral service Thursday at 11 a.m. in the First Presbyterian Church of Bakerstown. The Rev. Dr. David L. McDonald, pastor, and the Rev. Dr. Richard A. Morledge, pastor emeritus, will officiate. Interment in Bakerstown Cemetery. If desired, memorial donations in his name may be made to his church, the First Presbyterian Church of Bakerstown, Route 8 and Heckert Road, Bakerstown, PA 15007. Mr. Andersen was a corporate director of packaging and product developer with H.J. Heinz. He was the inventor of the squeezable ketchup bottle. Past president of the Eden Hall Farm Foundation, past board member of the Richland Youth Foundation, scout master of Boy Scout Troop #58 in Cooperstown in the late 1950s and early 1960s, an elder of the First Presbyterian Church of Bakerstown, Army Air Corps pilot of World War II who dropped paratroopers, and was very active in numerous golf clubs and golf tournaments.

Raymond Beggs, Crabtree

Raymond "Snooky" Beggs, 61, of Crabtree, died Tuesday, July 18, 2000, in Westmoreland Regional Hospital, Greensburg. He was born May 4, 1939, in Greensburg, the son of the late Isabelle Skodak Carlson. He was a retired custodian for the Greensburg Salem School District, and formerly was a chef for Carbone's Restaurant for several years. He was a member of St. Bartholomew Catholic Church, and a life member of the Crabtree V.F.D. Survivors include his wife of 32 years, Ann Micklow Beggs; a sister, Harriett Carlson of California; a nephew and niece; and several cousins. Relatives and friends will be received Thursday from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the CLEMENT L. PANTALONE FUNERAL HOME, 409 W. Pittsburgh St., Greensburg, (724) 837-0020, www.pantalone.com. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated Friday at 10 a.m. in St. Bartholomew Catholic Church, Crabtree, with the Rev. Luke Policicchio, O.S.B., as celebrant. Interment will follow in St. Clair Cemetery, Greensburg. The Crabtree V.F.D. will conduct a service Friday at 7:30 p.m. in the funeral home. Natale N. Pantalone, funeral director.

Alice E. Buxton Boyle, Penn Hills

Alice E. "Sweetie" Buxton Boyle, 99, of Penn Hills, died Monday, July 17, 2000. She was the wife of the late George W. Boyle, Sr. Surviving are two sons , George W. Boyle, Jr. and Gerald Buxton Boyle; 11 grandchildren, Barbara DeFazio, Patricia Boyle, Rosemary Hogan, George W. Boyle, III, James Boyle, Thomas Boyle, Jerry Boyle, Daniel Boyle, Sharon Rice, Linda Macklem and Patrick Boyle; and 21 great grandchildren. Mrs. Boyle was the last surviving daughter of the 10 Buxton children. The Buxtons were a founding family of Corpus Christi Church where she was a Christian mother . She was the first female employee of the US Dept. of Agriculture to retire with 50 years of service (1970). She was the manager of the Produce Inspection Office in Pittsburgh and a member of the first four-year graduating class of Sacred Heart High School. Friends received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday in SOXMAN FUNERAL HOMES, LTD., Morasco Chapel, 9406 Frankstown Road (near Graham Blvd.), Penn Hills. Christian Funeral Mass will be at 10 a.m. Thursday in St. Bartholomew Roman Catholic Church.

Theresa Mae Dailey, Cranberry

Theresa Mae Dailey, 73, of Cranberry Township, formerly of the North Side, died Sunday, July 16, 2000, at East Liverpool Hospital, East Liverpool, Ohio. Born Oct. 15, 1926, in Pittsburgh, a daughter of the late Lawrence and Ann Cunningham Mannke. Theresa was an active member of St. Ferdinand Roman Catholic Church in Cranberry Township and was formerly a member of the Annunciation Roman Catholic Church in the North Side. She was active in St. Ferdinand's Royal Court and the Cranberry Seniors. Mrs. Dailey was an Avon sales representative for many years and for some time was a manager for Kroger's supermarkets. While attending Annunciation Church, she was also employed by the school in the cafeteria. She was a district committee woman for some time for the 26th Ward City of Pittsburgh and also a member of the Brighton Heights Senior Citizens. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas A. Daily in 1989; a son, Kevin Patrick Daily; and three brothers . Survivors include a son, Michael Thomas Dailey of Cranberry Township; a daughter, Mrs. Michael (Elizabeth Ann) Hastings of Waterford, Mich.; a brother, Francis Earl "Buzz" Mannke of Pittsburgh; a sister, Mrs. Joseph (Geraldine) Whelan of the North Side; and six grandchildren. Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday and from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at GLENN-KILDOO CRANBERRY CHAPEL, 130 Wisconsin Ave., Cranberry Township. A Mass of Christian Burial will be said in the St. Ferdinand R.C. Church Friday, July 21, at 10 a.m. with the Rev. Joseph P. Newell as celebrant. Interment will follow in St. Mary's Cemetery, Mt. Troy Road, Ross Township. If desired, memorial contributions may be made to either St. Ferdinand R.C. Church, 2535 Rochester Road, Cranberry Township, PA 16066 or to a charity of the donor's choice.

James R. Demsey, Baldwin

James R. Demsey, of Baldwin Borough, accidentally on Monday, July 17, 2000. Beloved son of Margaret (McKnight) Demsey and the late Al E. Demsey. Brother of Karen Boggs of California, Alan (Donna) Demsey of Brookline and Brian (Doreen) Demsey of Glenshaw. Also nieces and nephews. Friends will be received Wednesday from 7 to 9 p.m. and Thursday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the GRIFFITH MORTUARY INC., 5636 Brownsville Road, Broughton-Curry-South Park Township. Funeral Friday (time later).

Dolores Elkin, Latrobe

Dolores Elkin, 77, of Latrobe, died Monday, July 17, 2000, at her home. She was born July 30, 1922, in Irwin, a daughter of the late Joseph A. and Catherine Suter Donegan. She was retired from Century 21 Warren Real Estate Co. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, George C. Elkin; an infant daughter, Sally Elaine Elkin; a sister, Catherine Dimling; and a brother, Joseph Donegan. Survivors include a son, Jeffrey J. Elkin and his wife, Barbara, of Latrobe; three daughters , Sue Ellen Elkin of Latrobe, Katherine Roble and her husband, Randy, of Greensburg and Ann Zoppetti of Latrobe; five grandchildren, Melanie, Elizabeth, Emily, Ryan and Tyler; and a great-granddaughter, Madison. There is no public visitation; service and interment are private. The JOHN J. LOPATICH FUNERAL HOME INC., 601 Weldon St., Latrobe, is in charge of arrangements.

Saula John Finau, North Hills

Saula John Finau, 78, of the North Hills, died Sunday, July 16, 2000. Mr. Finau was a professional horticulturist. He also had worked as a school teacher. He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Survivors include nine daughters , Lavinia Finau, Saane Hettig, Seepa Lioni, Anne Kaminski, Wynnie Outly, Seini Muckle, Amelia Kauvaka, Loni Jones and Lyla Nock; four sons , Steven Finau, Filipe Mausia, Saula J. Finau Jr. and Allen T. Finau; two sisters , Saipalesi Lotaki and Maile Makahununiu; a brother, Sione Akauola; his former wife, Mele Tilini Finau; 40 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. Friends will be received from 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the ORION C. PINKERTON FUNERAL HOME, 1014 California Ave., Avalon. Additional visitation and a traditional Tongan service will be conducted from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday at the Northgate Church, 238 West View Ave., Ross. Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 2202 Reis Run Road, Ross. Burial will be in Union Dale Cemetery, North Side.
