Pyne, Gladys & Edward
Edward James Pyne (Ted), 86, died of a broken heart on April 13, 2009 at Lima Estates, Lima, PA just one week after his beloved wife of 65 years, Gladys, passed away.
Born in Bargoed, Gilfach, Wales (UK), Ted was recognized as a gifted student in his youth and was granted scholarships in order to continue his education; a rare achievement for any "commoner" from his relatively poor coal-mining town.
His engineering studies were interrupted by the advent of WWII and his enlistment in the RAF (Royal Air Force). It was during this time that he met and married Gladys.
In 1946, Ted, Gladys, and their one-year-old son, David, were transferred to India to aid in the training of personnel in the newly formed Pakistani Air Force during the partition era. Their daughter, Wendy, was born while there.
Upon the family's return to England in 1950 they lived in Odiham, Southampton and moved to Montreal, Canada in 1955 where Mr. Pyne was employed by the Canadian aircraft company, Canadair, in flight testing. In 1962, Ted accepted a position with the Vertol Division of Boeing where he was involved in and oversaw many aspects of the creation of their new Wind Tunnel (the first on the East Coast). Upon his retirement in 1986 he served in a consulting capacity for several years.
An avid gardener, traveler, and 'potterer', Ted was known by all as a consummate gentleman with a dry wit and an ever-present smile.
He will be grievously missed by his devoted children David A. Pyne of Upper Darby and Wendy P. Blanchard and her husband, Ken, of Media; his loving grandchildren Laura B. Trout and her husband, Kevin, and Christopher E. Blanchard; and many dear friends.
A memorial service will be held for Ted and Gladys at the Church of the Holy Comforter, 1000 Burmont Road, Drexel Hill, PA at 11 o'clock Saturday morning, April 18th. Internment will be private. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Mr. and Mrs. Pyne's name to an organization or charity of the donors' choice.
Gladys Cope Pyne, 88, died April 6, 2009, at Lima Estates, Lima, PA after a five-year battle against breast cancer. Born in York, England she served in the WRAF (Women's Royal Air Force) during WWII where she met her husband Edward (Ted). In 1955 they emigrated to Canada with their two children. In 1962 they moved to Drexel Hill, PA where they lived until retiring to Lima Estates in May, 2008.
Gladys was an extremely artistic woman with a recognized talent for painting. Her work was frequently shown in various local juried exhibits. She also enjoyed traveling, gardening, and sewing. Until recently, Gladys was a member of the Daughters of the British Empire and a volunteer at The Church of the Holy Comforter, Episcopal.
Mrs. Pyne is survived by her devoted husband of 65 years, Ted; two bereaved children, David A. Pyne of Upper Darby and Mrs. Wendy P. Blanchard and her husband, Ken, of Media; her loving grandchildren Mrs. Laura B. Trout and her husband, Kevin, of Media, PA and Christopher E. Blanchard of Washington, D.C. Beloved wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend, Gladys will be sorely missed by all.
A memorial service will be held for at the Church of the Holy Comforter, 1100 Burmont Road, Drexel Hill, PA at 11 o'clock Saturday morning, April 18th. Internment will be private. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Mrs. Gladys Pyne's name to an organization or charity of the donors' choice.
