Cosinuke, Walter
Walter Cosinuke, 83, of Rose Valley, pioneer of the application of Networking (CPM/PERTCOST) in the construction industry, died Friday, February 23, at Whitehorse Village, Newtown Square. He was a hard working, self-made man whose passion and tenacious drive was balanced by his warmth and generosity. He was a devoted husband, father and grandfather with an infectious smile, and a youthful sense of humor.
After a successful sixteen year career at Catalytic Construction Company where he held a series of Project Management and Executive positions, he founded Walter Cosinuke Associates, Inc. in 1966. As the Principle of WCA, he pioneered the use of computerization for Critical Path Management processes and PERT methodologies for large scale, global construction project management. Later, he was innovated in the role of sophisticated databases as the core utility for project management combined with smaller computers in the field for greater hands-on control and impact.
Walt was a trusted advisor to companies on a global scale. He consulted to such firms as:
Allied Chemical, Bechtel, the United States Corps of Engineers, Exxon, Frito Lay, Mobil Oil, NASA, the New York Port Authority, Pertamina (the national oil company of Indonesia), Morrison-Knudsen, Sun Oil, Technip, and Union Camp. Throughout his career, Walt's consulting was marked by his ability to relate equally well with all levels of the team, from ditch diggers and ironworkers to board room executives and owners.
Several noteworthy construction projects he was involved in include: the World Trade Center in New York City, the Newark Airport, NASA and APOLLO Assemble and Launch Facility, Liquified Natural Gas Refineries for the Indonesian Government in East Kalimantan and Sumatra, a Hydro Electric Dam on the Peace River in British Columbia, and Philadelphia Electric's Peach Bottom Nuclear Power Plant. At age 75, Walt made seven trips to China before retirement to assist International Flavors and Fragrances in the construction of a new plant in Zhejiang province.
Walt was also active as an leader and teacher in his field. Over the years he conducted hundreds of seminars and workshops for the American Management Association and the American Institute of chemical Engineers. He also published articles in trade journals and wrote a book on project management techniques.
Walt was born in Chester, PA in 1923. He was apprenticed at the Bartol Research Foundation and attended Drexel University. In 1943 he enlisted in the Army AirCorp and was commissioned as a navigator. After the war, Walter attended and graduated from Swarthmore College with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. He was a member of the Kappa Sigma fraternity. While at Swarthmore, he was a standout lacrosse player competing against Johns Hopkins, Army, Navy, Penn and others. In 1948, he was named to the NorthSouth All Star team (a precursor to All American). His picture hangs in the Johns Hopkins Lacrosse Hall of Fame.
In 1955, Walt married Jane Roe of Chana, Ogle County, Illinois and they had three sons. They lived for 51 years in Rose Valley, PA. in a home that Walt designed, built and furnished with much of his own fine hand craftsmanship. He appreciated the qualities of beautiful natural materials and complemented his own workmanship with Chester County fieldstone, Moravian tiles, the fine art of George Nakashima, and other local craftsmen. Creating this oasis was a spiritual practice for Walt, and gave him a sense of deep satisfaction. Walt was a dedicated and generous provider. Over the years he used his design and woodworking talents to help all three of his sons build or add onto their homes as well.
In the 1960s the Cosinuke family joined Media Monthly Meeting of the Religious Society of Friends which is planning a memorial service for Walt on Sunday March 18th at 2:00 pm at White Horse Village Retirement Community 535 Gradyville Road where he and Jane have lived since 2002. burial is set for May 27th at Lighthouse Cemetery in Ogle County, Illinois.
Walt was predeceased by his parents Michael and Rose, who immigrated from Russia and Austro-Hungary, and his brother John Alexander. He is survived by his wife Jane, and his three sons Thomas Roe, Robert Lyon, and John Walter and his daughters in-law Anne Kelton and Jennifer Krier. He is also survived by four grandchildren: Matthew Alexander, Abigayle Jane, Willa Lyon, and August Jay.
