Blackburn, Leon

Leon Blackburn (Lee) of Toledo, Ohio formerly of Brookhaven, PA where he grew up. relinquished his tenacious grip on the world with dignity and forgiveness for all on June 14, 2007 at home. Born in Upland, PA 52 years ago and soon diagnosed with the second most debilitating form of muscular dystrophy, Becker's, a version of Duchene's. He never gave in to the cruelty of possessing a brilliant mind trapped in an ever increasing dysfunctional body.

He was a graduate of Sun Valley High School and against incredible odds, he earned a Bachelors Degree in English and Psychology from Warner Southern College in Florida and then went on to earn a Master's Degree in Journalism from Temple University.

He created and played beautiful string music when his hands still worked, he sculpted, as well as sculpting exquisite models and painting. He loved poetry and also wrote hundreds of beautiful poems, some about his connections to dogs he helped rescue, others about life and all it's meanings. He held numerous Brainbench certifications, had just copyrighted a collection of poems and was starting to write chapters for a second book he had always wanted to do. Professionally his numerous writings included a newspaper column about disability issues.

He was employed as a Public Affairs Specialist for the EPA regional headquarters division where he wrote for EPA publications, prepared speeches for public officials and was their press liaison. He held this position until he had to retire on disability due to Muscular Dystrophy.

He loved helping people, and his mind was always active in something new. He never ceased to embrace each new horizons no matter what it's challenges. He was articulate and knowledgeable about everything from politics to art to auto mechanics. He had a keen sense of humor and amused himself by competing with fantasy sports teams, football, baseball, hockey, etc. creating teams such as Keystone Kopz, Phantasy Phillies, The Toledo Dirty Fowl, Lucky Lee's, and Fire on Ice. He created 271 craft beer ratings to other members of RateBeer.com, his favorite being Imperial Stout but he had a wish list of over 70 more craft beers that he was still hoping to find. He wrote a blog on blogspot.com with his observations of life "here at the far end of Lake Erie."

He leaves behind his partner and wife; Estelle, who has always known there are very few real heroes in this world, but that this most amazing, loving man has always been and will always be the only "Hero" in her life. The day after his death it was her birthday and imagine the poignancy that he still managed to surprise her with flowers and the delivery of two prints of his own artwork that she deeply cherished and always wanted to have framed; Also survived by his father: Leon Blackburn, Sr of Brookhaven, PA; A Sister: Denise Gordon; Two Nieces Michelle and Monica and Two Grandnephews.
