Theodore Wiseman Jr.

ROUZERVILLE, Pa. - Theodore "Vance" Wiseman Jr., 55, of 11871 Old Route 16, died Tuesday, Sept. 8, 1998, at Chambersburg Hospital, Chambersburg, Pa.

Born Dec. 4, 1942, he was the son of the late Theodore "Vance" and Renda G. Radabaugh Wiseman Sr.

He was a 1962 graduate of Shippensburg Area Senior High School.

He served with the U.S. Air Force from December 1963 to December 1964. He was stationed in Little Rock, Ark.

He was employed as a machinist at Mack Trucks in Hagerstown for 30 years, retiring in 1995. He was a union steward at Mack Trucks.

He was of the Protestant faith.

He was a member of UAW Local 171.

He is survived by his wife, Shirley Ann Tressler Wiseman, whom he married Jan. 1, 1965; two sons, Theodore V. Wiseman III and Calvin J. Wiseman, both of Omaha, Neb.; two brothers, Henry G. Wiseman of Shippensburg, Pa. and Jerome E. Wiseman of Baltimore; and nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Jelena Lynn Wiseman, in 1965; and two sisters, Iva Jane Barnhart and Shirley Ann Primmn.

Services will be Saturday at 2 p.m. at Grove Funeral Home, 50 S. Broad St., Waynesboro, Pa. The Rev. Roger D. Cales will officiate. Burial will be in Parklawns Memorial Gardens, Chambersburg.

The family will receive friends Friday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

William E. Bowling

FORT LOUDON, Pa. - William E. Bowling, 78, of 10808 Lincoln Way West, died Tuesday, Sept. 8, 1998, at Chambersburg Hospital, Chambersburg, Pa.

Born March 25, 1920, in Clay Hill, Pa., he was the son of the late Charles A. and Nora C. Lizor Bowling.

He U.S. Army Air Corps veteran, he served in World War II.

He worked at Fairchild Industries of Hagerstown. He later worked at Letterkenny Army Depot. He then worked as a truck driver and was employed by Valley Quarries, Brake Construction and Boutel Nu-Car Transport of Baltimore. He drove a fuel transport for Agway Energy Products of Chambersburg. He was last employed at Loudon Industries of Mercersburg, Pa.

He was a member of Fort Loudon United Methodist Church.

He was a member of Detrich-Brechbill American Legion Post 612 of St. Thomas, Pa., and Fort Loudon Ruritan Club.

He is survived by his wife, Helen Zeger Bowling, whom he married Dec. 25, 1939; two sons, Edward E. Bowling of Charlotte, N.C., and Gregory L. Bowling of Orrtanna, Pa.; two brothers, Charles Bowling and Robert Bowling, both of Chambersburg; and three grandsons.

He was preceded in death by a brother and a grandson.

A memorial service will be Friday at 2 p.m. at Fort Loudon United Methodist Church. The Rev. John F. Rauhut and the Rev. James W. Herman will officiate. Burial will be in Stenger Hill Cemetery, Fort Loudon, with military graveside services conducted by Detrich-Brechbill American Legion Post 612 Honor Guard.

There will be no viewing; however, the family will receive friends today from 7 to 9 p.m. at Lininger-Fries Funeral Home, 47 N. Park Ave., Mercersburg.

Memorial donations may be made to Fort Loudon United Methodist Church, 1639 Appleway Road, St. Thomas, Pa. 17252.

R. Catherine Hammill

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - R. Catherine "Katie" Hammill, 107, of Falling Spring Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, and formerly of South Fourth Street, died Tuesday, Sept. 8, 1998, at the center.

Born Feb. 25, 1891, in New Franklin, Pa., she was the daughter of the late Adam and Louvina Little Dansberger.

Early in life, she was a midwife. She retired from the former H.J. Heinz Co. in Chambersburg.

She was a Protestant.

She is survived by a sister, Bertha Webber of Chambersburg; nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by three brothers.

Services will be Friday at 10 a.m. at Robert G. Sellers Funeral Home, 297 Philadelphia Ave., Chambersburg. The Rev. Stuart Troutman will officiate. Burial will be in Grindstone Hill Cemetery near Chambersburg.

Visitation will be at the funeral home Friday one hour prior to services.

L. Joyce R. Purnell

MONT ALTO, Pa. - L. Joyce Reachard Purnell, 76, of 10 Grist Mill Drive, died Monday, Sept. 7, 1998, at her home.

Born May 2, 1922, in Waynesboro, Pa., she was the daughter of the late William R. and Emma Jane Zeigler Reachard.

She was a 1940 graduate of Waynesboro High School. She graduated from Kutztown State University in 1944 with a bachelor of science degree in education.

From 1944 to 1945, she was employed as a librarian and English teacher in East McKeesport, Pa. She subsequently worked as a librarian at Kutztown State University and Waynesboro Junior High School. From 1964 until her retirement in 1976, she was the librarian at East Junior High School in the Waynesboro School District.

She was a member of Church of the Apostles, Rouzerville, Pa., and was a former choir member, deacon and elder.

She was a member of Pennsylvania Schools Retirees Association; Kutztown Alumni Association; past president of West Shore Rotary Ann's Club, Lemoyne, Pa., where she received Rotary's John Harris Fellow Award.

She is survived by her husband, Lewis R. "Peck" Purnell, whom she married Dec. 27, 1944; two sons, Craig R. Purnell of Fayetteville, Pa., and Donald K. Purnell of Falling Waters, W.Va.; a sister, Dorothy R. Kuhn of Fayetteville; a grandson; a great-granddaughter; two stepgrandchildren; nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by a son, Michael K. Purnell; and a sister, Lucille Blakney.

Services will be Friday at 2:30 p.m. at Grove Funeral Home, 50 S. Broad St., Waynesboro. The Rev. Carole A. Kipe will officiate. Burial will be in Green Hill Cemetery, Waynesboro.

There will be no viewing. The family will receive friends at the funeral home one hour prior to services on Friday.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Church of the Apostles, P.O. Box 288, Waynesboro, Pa. 17268.

Harold E. Miller

FAYETTEVILLE, Pa. - Harold E. Miller, 86, of 4999 Old Forge Road, died Tuesday, Sept. 8, 1998, at Franklin County Nursing Home, Chambersburg, Pa.

Born Aug. 20, 1912, in Twin Mountain, W.Va., he was the son of the late George H. and Mabel A. Parker Miller.

He was a truck driver for 32 years for Horn's Motor Express, formerly operating in Chambersburg, retiring in the early 1970s.

He is survived by his wife, Zella Martin Miller, whom he married Oct. 26, 1947; two  daughters, Connie M. Waybright of Waynesboro and Diana J. Powell of Shippensburg, Pa.; four sons, Tex E. Miller, Dennis L. Miller and Eddie L. Miller, all of South Mountain, Pa., and Ronald W. Miller of Chambersburg; a sister, Lilly Butler of South Mountain; 12 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a daughter, a son, three sisters and two brothers.

Services will be Friday at 10 a.m. at Grove Funeral Home, 50 S. Broad St., Waynesboro. Pastor David Keener will officiate. Burial will be in Strang's Cemetery, South Mountain.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home Thursday from 7 to 9 p.m.

Robert W. Mann

FORT LITTLETON, Pa. - Robert W. "Bob" Mann, 76, of HCR 75, Box 255, died Tuesday, Sept. 8, 1998, at home.

Born Aug. 17, 1922, in Webster Mills, Pa., he was the son of the late Clarence W. and Leah Shaw Mann.

He was a 1940 graduate of McConnellsburg (Pa.) High School.

He was a farmer and then worked at Letterkenny Army Depot from 1951 until his retirement in 1978.

A veteran of World War II, he served with the U.S. Army in Europe.

He was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Big Cove Tannery, Pa.

He was a member of McConnellsburg American Legion Post 561;, life member of McConnellsburg VFW Post 655, and a member of McConnellsburg Volunteer Fire Co. and 14th Armored Division.

He is survived by his wife, Precious Mae McGowan Mann, whom he married June 4, 1948; two  daughters, Judy Pressel of Plano, Texas, and Nancy Souders of Wells Tannery, Pa.; five granddaughters; and a great-grandchild.

Services will be Friday at 11 a.m. at Kelso-Cornelius Funeral Home, 322 N. Second St., McConnellsburg. The Revs. George Clippinger and David Arnold will officiate. Burial will be in Union Cemetery.

Visitation will be at the funeral home Thursday from 7 to 9 p.m. and one hour prior to services Friday. The funeral home will be open Thursday from 2 to 9 p.m.

Frances E. Hoover

MONT ALTO, Pa. - Frances E. Hoover, 85, of Mont Alto, and formerly of 1229 Pinecrest Ave., Hagerstown, died Monday, Sept. 7, at Waynesboro (Pa.) Hospital.

Born May 15, 1913, in Princeton, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late Arthur J. and Donzella Michael Moore.

She was preceded in death by her husband, David H. Hoover, in 1981.

She was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Hagerstown.

She was a member of Washington County Historical Society, South Central Pennsylvania Genealogical Society and AARP.

She is survived by five  daughters, Davonna M. Hoover and Lynne M. Hoover, both of Baltimore, Hannah Kristin Reynolds of Marlowe, W.Va., Lucinda K. Russ of Mechanicsburg, Pa., and Lauren M. Kauffman of Mont Alto; a son, James C. Hoover of Middletown, Md.; twin sisters, Verona Chambers of Pensacola, Fla., and Versa Swimm of Princeton; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a granddaughter.

Services will be Friday at 10:30 a.m. at Gerald N. Minnich Funeral Home, 305 N. Potomac St., Hagerstown. The Rev. Joseph C. Carolin will officiate. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery, Hagerstown.

Visitation will be Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Western Maryland Room, Washington County Free Library, 100 S. Potomac St., Hagerstown, Md. 21740.

Charles R. Bowers Jr.

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - Charles R. "Hotty" Bowers Jr., 78, of 385 E. Queen St., died Monday, Sept. 7, 1998, at University Hospital, Hershey Medical Center, Hershey, Pa.

Born Aug. 9, 1920, in Chambersburg, he was the son of the late Charles R. Bowers Sr. and Margaret Hade Bowers.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Betty Jane Reed, in 1973.

He was a 1939 graduate of Chambersburg High School.

He was employed by the former Stanley Co. and was business agent for the A.C.W.A. for five years. He and his first wife owned and operated the former Hotty's Cottage on Wayne Avenue for 11 years. He recently was a real estate agent for Prudential Franklin Associates Realtors in Chambersburg.

He was a member of Trinity United Brethren Church, State Line, Pa.

He was a member of Chambersburg Evening Kiwanis Club, serving as music director and board member; social member of Charles M. Nitterhouse Post 1599 VFW, Chambersburg; BPO Elks Lodge 600, Chambersburg; life member of Local 770 A.F. of Musicians, Hagerstown; member of AARP; Cumberland Valley Railroad Society; and Chambersburg Community Centers Inc. He was the first president of Franklin County Labor Council.

A drummer, he played with the Rhythm Kids, Phil Young, Hiram Gill and Glendon Weeks bands. He then fronted his own 11-piece band. His latest musical work was with "The Sounds of the Decades" and with the Totem Pole Playhouse.

He is survived by his wife, Betty A. Shockey Bowers, whom he married March 8, 1974; two  daughters, Diane Szollose of Lebanon, Pa., and Judy O'Meara of Phoenix; four stepdaughters, Merianne Appleby and Cathy Shatzer, both of Chambersburg, Amy Eckels of Waynesboro, Pa., and Ellen Korby of Fayetteville, Pa.; a stepson, Richard L. Shockey of Silver Spring, Md.; two sisters, Jean Kauffman of Waynesboro and Ruth Claudy of Chambersburg; a brother, Jack F. Bowers of Chambersburg; 12 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a son, a grandson and a sister.

Services will be Friday at 11:30 a.m. in the chapel of Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home, 333 Falling Spring Road, Chambersburg. The Revs. Michael Wentz and Guy Camp will officiate. Burial will be in Lincoln Cemetery, Chambersburg.

Visitation will be at the funeral home Thursday from 6 to 9 p.m.

Memorial donations may be made to the American Heart Association, 225 E. King St., Chambersburg, Pa. 17201.
