Thelma S. Mower

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - Thelma S. Mower, 91, a resident of Menno Haven, and formerly of 683 Mower Road, Chambersburg, died Tuesday, Aug. 25, 1998, at Menno Haven.

Born Sept. 21, 1906, in Chambersburg, she was the daughter of the late Walter L. and Naomi C. Reitzel Shields.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Leon H. Mower, in 1992.

She was a homemaker.

She was a charter member of Park Avenue United Methodist Church, Chambersburg, and was a former Sunday School teacher.

She is survived by a son, Donald S. Mower of Chambersburg; two granddaughters, Barbara Rockwell and Judy Pearson, both of Chambersburg; three grandsons, Rodney Mower and Joel Mower, both of Chambersburg, and Lynn Mower of Fayetteville, Pa.; nine great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandson.

She was preceded in death by a son, Elden L. Mower; and a brother, Arthur L. Shields.

Services will be Friday at 10 a.m. in the chapel of Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home, 333 Falling Spring Road, Chambersburg. The Rev. Robert E. Taylor will officiate. Burial will be in Norland Cemetery, Chambersburg.

Visitation will be at the funeral home Friday one hour prior to services.

Memorial donations may be made to Park Avenue United Methodist Church, 125 Park Ave., Chambersburg, Pa. 17201.

James F. Burke

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - James F. Burke, 87, of 850 B. Menno Village, died Thursday, Aug. 27, 1998, at Menno Haven.

Born Oct. 5, 1910, in Dry Run, Pa., he was the son of the late James M. and Mary E. Cree Burke.

He retired, after 43 years, as funeral director of Thomas M. Quinn and sons Funeral Home, Long Island City, N.Y.

He was a member of Corpus Christi Catholic Church, Chambersburg.

He was a member of Knights of Columbus; and a member of Holy Name Society.

He is survived by his wife, Thelma A. Kunkleman Burke, whom he married Aug. 17, 1937; two  daughters, Joan F. Rella of Belford, N.J., and Virginia DeFrange of Winchester, Va.; two granddaughters; four nieces; and four nephews.

He was preceded in death by two sisters; and three brothers.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Saturday at 10 a.m. at Corpus Christi Catholic Church, 320 Philadelphia Ave., Chambersburg. Burial will be in Lincoln Cemetery, Chambersburg.

There will be no viewing.

The family requests the omission of flowers.

William E. Gossert III

CARLISLE, Pa. - William E. Gossert III, 66, of 151 Limekiln Road, died Wednesday, Aug. 26, 1998, at Carlisle Hospital.

Born March 19, 1932, in Waynesboro, Pa., he was the son of the late William E. and Iva Mae Beam Gossert Jr.

He was a 1950 graduate of Chambersburg High School.

He retired in 1987 from IBM Inc. in Mechanicsburg, Pa., after 29 years.

A U.S. Army veteran, he served in the Korean War.

He was a member of First United Methodist Church, Carlisle.

He is survived by his wife of 44 years, Barbara L. Hurley Gossert; a daughter, Sheree L. Fraker of Carlisle; a son, Fred W. Gossert of Boca Raton, Fla.; two sisters, Marguerite B. Martin of Hagerstown and Janet L. Gossert of Chambersburg, Pa.; a brother, Kenneth E. Gossert of Carlisle; five grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by two sisters, Josephine Gossert and Kathleen Faust; and a brother, Harold Gossert.

Services will be Saturday at 10:30 a.m. at Ewing brothers Funeral Home, 630 S. Hanover St., Carlisle. The Rev. John L. Shellenberger Jr. will officiate. Burial will be in Cumberland Valley Memorial Gardens, West Pennsboro Township, Cumberland County.

The viewing will be today from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Memorial donations may be made to First United Methodist Church, 64 E. North St., Carlisle, Pa. 17013.

Elmer E. Landis

GREENCASTLE, Pa. - Elmer E. Landis, 65, of 13794 Worleytown Road, died Thursday, Aug. 27, 1998, at Waynesboro (Pa.) Hospital.

Born June 21, 1933, in Antrim Township, Pa., he was the son of the late Martin A. Landis and Mary Ellen Palmer Bradley.

He retired in 1991 from Mack Truck of Hagerstown. Earlier, he worked at the former Fairchild Industries of Hagerstown.

He attended Macedonia United Brethren Church near Greencastle.

He was a member of Golden Bulldogs of Mack Truck and a social member of Harry D. Zeigler VFW Post 6319 of Greencastle.

He enjoyed hunting and going to all types of sales.

He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Ann L. Myers Landis; two  daughters, Susan V. Rutter of Greencastle and Deborah A. Bonkoski of Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio; a son, Elmer E. Landis of Greencastle; four grandchildren; aunts and uncles.

Services will be Monday at 11 a.m. at Harold M. Zimmerman and Son Funeral Home, 45 S. Carlisle St., Greencastle. The Rev. Gayle L. Ruble Sr. will officiate. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery, Mercersburg, Pa.

The family will receive friends Sunday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Memorial donations may be made to Building Fund of Macedonia United Brethren Church, 11887 Worleytown Road, Greencastle, Pa. 17225.

Kirkland T. Cowan

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - Kirkland Thomas Cowan, infant son of Chris J. Stewart and Carrie L. Cowan, both of Chambersburg, died Wednesday, Aug. 26, 1998, at Johns Hopkins Bay View Medical Center, Baltimore.

He was born Aug. 15, 1998, in Berlin, Md.

In addition to his parents, he is survived by a twin sister, Hannah Marie Cowan, a patient at Bay View Medical Center; maternal grandparents, Dick and Carolyn Thomas of Marion, Pa.; maternal grandparents, Richard and Wendy Cowan of Chambersburg; paternal grandparents, Kay and John Stewart of Chambersburg; maternal great-grandparents, George and Janet Humbert of Chambersburg; maternal great-grandparents, Wesley and Violet Cowan of Fannettsburg, Pa.; paternal great-grandmother, Miriam A. Eberly of Chambersburg; maternal great-grandmother, Rachel Thomas of Mercersburg, Pa.; maternal great-great-grandmother, Lorene Peterson of Dry Run, Pa.; and maternal great-great-grandmother, Sue Cowan of Fannettsburg.

Services will be Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Marion United Methodist Church, 94 Colorado St., Marion. The Rev. Guy W. Camp III will officiate. Burial will be in Upper Path Valley Cemetery, Dry Run.

There will be no viewing. The family will receive friends Tuesday one hour prior to services at the church.

Jeanne M. Monn

GREENCASTLE, Pa. - Jeanne Marie Monn, 67, of 11752 Carrol Ave., died Sunday, Aug. 30, 1998, at Waynesboro Hospital, Waynesboro, Pa.

Born Aug. 17, 1931, in Hagerstown, she was the daughter of the late Russell Calvin and Edna Irene Baechtel Ausherman.

She was a certified nurse assistant at Snellville Nursing Home in Georgia.

She was a member of Greencastle Baptist Church, where she was an active volunteer.

She was a volunteer at Western Maryland Hospital Center.

She is survived by her husband, Kenneth Monn; a daughter, Kathi Bostelman of Stafford, Va.; a son, Keith Monn of Tennessee; four sisters, Marine Marcey of Arlington, Va., Mary Elizabeth Clark of Maugansville, Betty Longanecker of Chewsville and Nancy Hebb of Smithsburg; three brothers, Russell Ausherman and Jackie Ausherman, both of Hagerstown, and Gary Ausherman of Waynesboro; and three grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a son, Jeffrey Monn; a sister, Edna Hoover; and a grandchild.

Services will be Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd., Hagerstown. The Rev. David F. Rasmussen will officiate. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery.

The family will receive friends Tuesday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Ray E. Russell

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - Ray E. "Tiny" Russell, 45, of 5920 Cumberland Highway, died Saturday, Aug. 29, 1998, at Chambersburg Hospital, Chambersburg.

Born Oct. 15, 1952, in Carlisle, Pa., he was the son of the late Ervin T. and Mary A. Lindsey Russell.

He was a cashier at Wayne Avenue Sunoco Station, Chambersburg, and formerly worked at Washinger's Sunoco Station. Prior to that he worked at Landis Machine Co.

He attended Prince Street United Brethren Church, Shippensburg, Pa.

He enjoyed camping, hunting and fishing.

He is survived by his wife, Nancy E. Lehman Russell, whom he married Aug. 5, 1985; two stepdaughters, Toya Bowers of Mont Alto, Pa., and Trudy Mason of Waynesboro, Pa.; a stepson, Dale Christman of Chambersburg; a sister, Cynthia M. Fulton of Shippensburg; a brother, Michael L. Russell of Shippensburg; and five stepgrandchildren.

He was preceded in death by four sisters.

Services will be Wednesday at 2:30 p.m. in the chapel of Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home, 333 Falling Spring Road, Chambersburg. The Rev. Jaye M. Bartle will officiate. Burial will be in Spring Hill Cemetery, Shippensburg.

The family will receive friends Tuesday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Ruth H. Henneberger

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - Ruth Hartzok Henneberger, 96, of Menno Haven and formerly of 870 Edgar Ave., Chambersburg, died Saturday, Aug. 29, 1998, at Chambersburg Hospital, Chambersburg.

Born Jan. 14, 1902, in Welsh Run, Pa., she was the daughter of the late Harvey and Mary Elizabeth Craig Shartle.

She was preceded in death by her first husband, Frank B. Hartzok, in 1980; and her second husband, William S. Henneberger Sr., in 1990.

She was a graduate of Penn Hall, Chambersburg.

She was a member of St. John's United Church of Christ, Chambersburg.

She was a member of Chambersburg Garden Club.

She is survived by a stepson, William S. Henneberger Jr. of Martinsburg, W.Va.; two stepgrandsons, William S. Henneberger III of Hagerstown and Todd R. Henneberger of Braddock Heights, Md.; two stepgreat-grandchildren; a cousin; two nephews; four nieces; and a close friend, Jean Keltner of Chambersburg.

Services will be Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Robert G. Sellers Funeral Home, 297 Philadelphia Ave., Chambersburg. The Rev. Stephen W. Hoffman will officiate. Burial will be in Lincoln Cemetery, Chambersburg.

There will be no public viewing.

Memorial donations may be made to St. John's United Church of Christ, 1811 Lincoln Way East, Chambersburg, Pa. 17201.
