Pennsylvania Obituary and Marriage Records, 1947-2010

William D. Dixon

ST. THOMAS, Pa. - William "Billie" D. Dixon, 88, of 107 Appleway, and a resident of Manor Care Health Services in Chambersburg, Pa., for five months, died Saturday, Aug. 22, 1998, at Manor Care Health Services.

Born Dec. 22, 1909, in St. Thomas, he was the son of the late Charles and Mary Bingham Dixon.

His wife, Mary Gress Dixon, died in 1994.

He owned and operated Bingham's Orchard and fruit market all of his life, retiring in 1975.

He was a former member of the NRA, Mercersburg (Pa.) American Legion and Mercersburg VFW.

He was an avid hunter and loved the mountains.

He is survived by one daughter Betty Kriner of St. Thomas; one sister, Neva Simmers of Chambersburg; three grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one sister, Martha Shatzer.

Private services will be held at the convenience of the family. Burial will be in St. Thomas Cemetery.

Memorial donations may be made to Tuscarora Education Association, Tuscarora Wildlife Education Program, 4773 Fort Loudon Road, Mercersburg, Pa. 17236.

Arrangements are by Kelso-Cornelius Funeral Home Inc., 6492 Lincoln Way West, St. Thomas, Pa. 17252.

Carl S. Amsley

ST. THOMAS, Pa. - Carl S. Amsley, 77, of 4885 Lincoln Way West, died Saturday, Aug. 22, 1998, at Chambersburg Hospital in Chambersburg, Pa., from a heart attack.

Born June 13, 1921, in Cove Gap, Pa., he was the son of the late Ella Mae Amsley.

He was a building contractor for 30 years, developing and building most of the homes in the village of Carlton Heights. He and his wife have been in the mortgage finance business for the past decade.

In the 1950s, a love affair with antique cars began, and led to his Stanley Sales and Service of St. Thomas. He was known worldwide as a dealer and consultant of steam-powered cars.

In 1966, he and a friend, Bob Garlock of McConnellsburg, Pa., became the first people to drive across the United States in a steam-powered automobile. He became known as the "Dean of Steam." He won the Great American Race in 1987 and 1988. He hosted the National Steam Car Enthusiasts Convention on five occasions and holds the record for most first prizes as best of class.

He was a veteran of World War II, serving with the U.S. Army.

He was a member of United Methodist Church of St. Thomas for 50 years.

He also was a member of Detrich-Brechbill American Legion Post 612 of St. Thomas, McConnellsburg American Legion Post 561, Antique Automobile Club of America, Gettysburg (Pa.) Region AACA, Mason-Dixon Region AACA, Horseless Carriage Club, Veteran Car Club, and Steam Car Club of America.

He is survived by his wife, Elisa Perez Amsley, whom he married May 20, 1976; three  daughters, C. Mardell Eberly of Chambersburg, Roxanne S. Banks of Mercersburg, Pa., and Kimberly S. Amsley-Camp of Centerville, Va.; two sons, C. Larry Amsley of Chambersburg, and Terry D. Amsley of Carlisle, Pa.; two stepdaughters, Yolanda Cannon and Stephanie Decker, both of San Antonio; one stepson, Daniel Lee Gonzalez of San Antonio; 16 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one great-granddaughter.

A memorial service will be held Wednesday at 5 p.m. at United Methodist Church of St. Thomas. The Rev. Paul F. Crawford Jr. will officiate. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery in Mercersburg.

There will be no viewing; however the family will receive friends one hour prior to the service on Wednesday in the church.

Memorial donations may be made to United Methodist Church of St. Thomas, P.O. Box 248, St. Thomas, Pa. 17252.

Arrangements are by Lininger-Fries Funeral Home, 47 N. Park Ave., Mercersburg, Pa.

Louis Yanaschik

SOUTH MOUNTAIN, Pa. - Louis Yanaschik, 82, of 10058 South Mountain Road, South Mountain Restoration Center, died Tuesday, Aug. 18, 1998, at South Mountain Restoration Center.

Born Nov. 20, 1915, in Pennsylvania, he was the son of the late Staley Yanaschik and Tillie Kashinsky.

He completed the eighth grade.

He was a dishwasher for many restaurants in Lackawanna, Pa.

He was a member of Holy Rosary Chapel at South Mountain Restoration Center.

He was the last of his immediate family.

Services will be held today at 2 p.m. in the auditorium of South Mountain Restoration Center. The Rev. Joseph Carolin will officiate. Burial will be Tuesday at 10 a.m. in St. Andrews Roman Catholic Cemetery.

Arrangements are by Snyder-Lochstampfor Funeral Home in Waynesboro, Pa.

Harry G. Benedict

WAYNESBORO, Pa. - Harry G. Benedict, 80, of 6305 Marsh Road, died Monday, Aug. 24, 1998, at his home.

Born July 19, 1918, near Duffield, Guilford Township, Pa., he was the son of the late Ezra G. and Lizzie Wingert Benedict.

He was a 1936 graduate of Chambersburg High School.

His first wife, Evelyn R. Hess Benedict, died in 1974. They were married Dec. 13, 1941.

A farmer, he operated farms in Fayetteville and Zullinger and owned a farm on Coldspring Road in Waynesboro, retiring in 1974.

He and his wife owned and operated Benedict Country Store at their home. He drove a school bus for 27 years.

He was a member of Old German Baptist Brethren Church Antietam Congregation near Waynesboro, where he was a minister and elder.

He is survived by his wife, Julia M. Bayer Benedict, whom he married in September 1975; five  daughters, Fay H. Yoder of Chambersburg, Edna H. Denlinger of Brookville, Ohio, Joan H. Helman of Fayetteville, Lois H. Flora of Covington, Ohio, and Mae H. Emig of West Alexander, Ohio; three sons, Mark H. Benedict of Versailles, Ohio, Crist H. Benedict of Covington, Ohio, and Keith H. Benedict of Chambersburg, Pa.; three brothers, Abram W. Benedict, Joe E. Benedict and Paul D. Benedict, all of Chambersburg; a stepsister, Mary Slothour of Chambersburg; 34 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; and nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by one son, Dale H. Benedict; two sisters and three brothers.

A service will be held Thursday at 9 a.m. at the home, followed by church services at 10 a.m. at Prices Old German Baptist Brethren Church near Waynesboro on Pa. 316. Elders Donald Hess, Ray Garber, Robert Matthews and Marlin Hege will officiate. Burial will be in the adjoining church cemetery.

The family will receive friends at Grove Funeral Home, 50 S. Broad St., Waynesboro, Wednesday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 9 p.m.

The family requests the omission of flowers.

Scott E. Miller

WAYNESBORO, Pa. - Scott Edward Miller, 20, of 1580 State Line Road, died Monday, Aug. 24, 1998, as a result of an automobile accident on Marsh Pike in Hagerstown.

Born Sept. 28, 1977, in Waynesboro, Pa., he was the son of Barry E. and Diane M. Brougher Miller of Waynesboro.

He was a 1995 graduate of Greencastle-Antrim Senior High School. He attended Penn College of Technology in Williamsport, Pa., for one year.

He was employed by Waynesboro Design Services in Waynesboro as a drafter and worked for Brother's Pizza of Hagerstown.

He was a member of Otterbein United Brethren in Christ Church in Waynesboro, where he assisted in lighting and sound for some church productions.

He wrote music, and played basketball, baseball and golf.

In addition to his parents, he is survived by his maternal grandmother, B. Elizabeth Brougher of Markleton, Pa.; a special friend, Molly Humphrey; and aunts, uncles and cousins.

Services will be held Friday at 10 a.m. at Otterbein United Brethren in Christ Church, 146 Leitersburg St., Greencastle, Pastor Michael V. Newman and Pastor Ronald L. Cook will officiate. Burial will be in Parklawn Memorial Gardens, Chambersburg.

The family will receive friends at Miller-Grove Funeral Home, 521 S. Washington St., Greencastle, Thursday from 6 to 9 p.m.

Memorial donations may be made to Otterbein Ministry Center, 912 S. Potomac St., Waynesboro, Pa. 17268.

Charles A. Landon

WAYNESBORO, Pa. - Charles A. Landon, 87, of Waynesboro, and formerly of Martinsburg, W.Va., died Saturday, Aug. 22, 1998, at Hoover House Retirement Home, Waynesboro.

Born in Crisfield, Md., he was the son of the late Charles J. and Henrietta Landon.

His wife, Hazel Arnica Landon, died in 1987.

He retired from E.I. Dupont.

After retirement, he hunted, fished and looked for antiques.

He collected Civil War guns.

He is survived by four sisters, Mable Marsh of Salisbury, Md., Sara Miles of Panama City, Fla., and Ella Jean Holland and Olive Hickman, both of Crisfield; and nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by one sister, Helen Beamer; and two brothers, Edwin "Teddy" Landon and Robert E. Landon.

A private memorial service and burial will be held at Mount Hebron Cemetery, Winchester, Va.

Lester G. Hoover

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - Services for Lester G. Hoover, 80, of 41 Acorn Circle, who died Saturday, Aug. 22, 1998, will be held Wednesday at 11:30 a.m. in the chapel of Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home, 333 Falling Spring Road, Chambersburg.

A viewing will be held today from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home, and one hour prior to the service at the funeral home on Wednesday.

Hilda M. Oyler

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - Hilda M. Oyler, 75, of 72 N. Second St., died Sunday, Aug. 23, 1998, at Manorcare Health Services, Chambersburg.

Born Nov. 7, 1922, in Chambersburg, she was the daughter of the late C. Ralph and Carrie Bricker Oyler.

She was a 1941 graduate of Chambersburg High School.

She retired from Coyle Free Library in Chambersburg in 1990 after 26 years.

She was a member of First United Methodist Church, Chambersburg.

She also was a member of AARP, Cumberland Valley Animal Shelter, both in Chambersburg, and Better Breathers Club of Franklin County.

She is survived by two sisters, Janet Walters of Shiremanstown, Pa., and Nancy Myers of Chambersburg; one niece, and one nephew.

She was preceded in death by one brother.

Graveside services will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Norland Cemetery in Chambersburg. The Rev. William M. Brown will officiate.

There will be no viewing.

Memorial donations may be made to Coyle Free Library, 102 N. Main St., Chambersburg, Pa. 17201.

Arrangements are by Robert G. Sellers Funeral Home, Chambersburg.
