Pennsylvania Obituary and Marriage Records, 1947-2010

Grayce I. Jackson

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - Grayce I. Jackson, a resident of Shippensburg Health Care Center and formerly of 248 W. King St., Chambersburg, died Friday, Aug. 7, 1998 at Chambersburg Hospital.

Born March 19, 1907, in Scotland, Pa., she was the daughter of the late John D. and Lillian Oliver.

She worked for 40 years with Gimbles Department Store in New York City.

She is survived by a son, Harold Oliver of Delaware; a sister, Dorothy Oliver of Franklin County Nursing Home, Chambersburg; three grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a brother.

Private services will be held at the convenience of the family. Burial will be in Norland Cemetery, Chambersburg.

There will be no viewing.

The family requests the omission of flowers.

Arrangements are by Robert G. Sellers Funeral Home, Chambersburg.

Nancy K. Starliper

WAYNESBORO, Pa. - Nancy Kennedy Starliper, 59, of 46 W. Third St., died Thursday, Aug. 6, 1998, at Waynesboro Hospital.

Born Nov. 22, 1938, in Waynesboro, she was the daughter of the late LeRoy and Mary Gift Kennedy.

She lived all her life in the Quincy, Pa., and Waynesboro areas. She was a 1956 graduate of Quincy High School. She attended Shippensburg University and Waynesboro Business School.

She was most recently employed as a teachers' assistant at Summitview Elementary School since 1972. Previously, she was employed by First National Bank in Waynesboro as a bookkeeper and teller.

She was a member of Faith United Methodist Church, Waynesboro, president of United Methodist Women and a member of the married couples' Sunday School class.

She was a member and past president of Waynesboro Area Lioness Club. She was a member of Delta Y Gradale Sorority in Waynesboro, TV Tune in Committee, Community Concert Association of Waynesboro, Franklin County Nursing Home Auxiliary, Waynesboro Hospital Auxiliary, Friends of Alexander Hamilton Memorial Free Library and National AARP.

She is survived by her husband, Richard A. Starliper, whom she married April 21, 1963; two  daughters, Laura E. Starliper of Waynesboro and Lisa K. Starliper of Seattle; a brother, Jack L. Kennedy of Waynesboro; and a niece.

Services will be held Sunday at 2 p.m. at Faith United Methodist Church, Waynesboro. The Rev. Lynn D. Trutt will officiate. Burial will be in Green Hill Cemetery, Waynesboro.

The family will receive friends today from 7 to 9 p.m. at Grove Funeral Home, 50 S. Broad St., Waynesboro.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Piano Fund, Faith United Methodist Church, 104 N. Potomac St., Waynesboro, Pa. 17268.

Helen M. Chovanes

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - Helen M. Chovanes, 88, a resident of Menno Haven Nursing Home for three years and formerly of 862 Rosewood Court, Chambersburg, and 610 Main St., Saxton, Pa., died Friday, Aug. 7, 1998, at the nursing home.

Born May 25, 1910, in Saxton, she was the daughter of the late William and Bertha Weaver Clapper.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph John Chovanes, in 1964.

She owned and operated Helen's Flowers in Saxton until she took ill in 1977.

She was a member of Trinity United Church of Christ in Saxton, where she was a former Sunday School teacher and former young people's superintendent.

She is survived by a daughter, Jean Marie Black of Chambersburg; a brother, Lloyd Clapper of Dudley, Pa.; and three grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by two sisters and four brothers.

Services will be Monday at 11 a.m. at Kelso-Cornelius Funeral Home, 6492 Lincoln Way West, St. Thomas, Pa. The Rev. Patrick Jones will officiate. Burial will be in Grand View Cemetery, Saxton, at the convenience of the family.

The family will receive friends Sunday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home, which will be open Sunday from 2 to 9 p.m.

Lawrence C. Zeger Jr.

SALISBURY, N.C. - Lawrence C. "Chris" Zeger Jr., 48, of 810 S. Main St., died Thursday, Aug. 6, 1998, at his home.

Born Feb. 12, 1950, in Chambersburg, Pa., he was the son of Gertrude Williams Zeger of Mercersburg, Pa., and the late Lawrence C. Zeger Sr.

He was a 1968 graduate of Mercersburg Academy, Mercersburg, and a 1972 graduate of Catawba College of Salisbury.

He had been employed as a chemist at North Carolina Finishing Co. of Salisbury.

He was a member of First United Church of Christ of Salisbury.

In addition to his mother, he is survived by two  daughters, Mandy E. Zeger Osterhus and Katherine M. Zeger Osterhus, both of Salisbury; a sister and a brother, Mitzi Alice Swailes and James C. Zeger, both of Mercersburg; his former wife, Cynthia Ball Osterhus of Salisbury; four nieces and two nephews.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Dennis Zeger, a former Franklin County commissioner.

A memorial service will be Thursday at 11 a.m. at Trinity United Church of Christ, Mercersburg. The Rev. Stephen R. Robertson will officiate. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery, Mercersburg.

The family will receive friends Thursday one hour prior to services.

Memorial donations may be made to The Mercersburg Academy, 300 E. Seminary St., Mercersburg, Pa. 17236; or Catawba College, 2300 Innes St., Salisbury, N.C. 28144.

Arrangements are by Lininger-Fries Funeral Home, Mercersburg.

Mildred S. Roberts

WAYNESBORO, Pa. - Mildred S. Roberts, 84, of Country Club Road, died Thursday, Aug. 6, 1998, at her home.

Born Sept. 17, 1913, in Harrisburg, Pa., she was the daughter of the late Luther J. and Helen Beatty Shanaman.

She graduated from Camp Hill (Pa.) High School and the University of Alabama.

She was vice president of Romala Corp., Waynesboro.

She was a member of Methodist Church, Camp Hill, and Green Valley Community Church in Green Valley, Ariz.

She was a member of Camp Hill Flower Club, Harrisburg Junior League, Green Valley Ceramic Club, Waynesboro Hospital Auxiliary and Waynesboro Eastern Seal Society. She had been a Waynesboro Girl Scout leader, den mother and Tri-Hi-Y leader.

She is survived by her husband, B.J. Roberts Sr.; three  daughters, Sandra Roberts Fogg, Sydnae Roberts Vanner and Susan Roberts Adam; two sons, B.J. Roberts Jr. and B. Kim Roberts; 13 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren.

Private services will be held at the convenience of the family.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Hospice of the Good Shepherd, 2700 Luther Drive, Chambersburg, Pa. 17201; or Lutheran Home Care Services Inc., 2700 Luther Drive, Chambersburg, Pa. 17201.

Arrangements are by Davis Funeral Home, Smithsburg.

Anne S. Frecon

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - Anne Sohmer Frecon, 85, of 3980 Frecon Road, died Friday, Aug. 7, 1998, at Chambersburg Hospital.

Born Oct. 12, 1912, in Williamsport, Pa., she was the daughter of the late Frank and Agnes Tidd Sohmer.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert H. Frecon, in 1988.

She was a 1931 graduate of Camp Hill High School and attended Bloomsburg College.

She worked with children. In 1948, she helped organize Girl Scout Camp Sacajawea. In 1950, she served as camp chairman. From 1950 to 1953, she served as Girl Scout commissioner of the Chambersburg region. She was a kindergarten teacher at Chambersburg Recreation Department and at Stevens Elementary School, Chambersburg. She served the Head Start program for 25 years. She served as president of the Pennsylvania Head Start Association. She also was a representative of Commonwealth Child Development Committee of Pennsylvania and a representative of the Region 3 Heat Start Advisory Committee of the National Office of Child Development in Washington, D.C.

She was a member of Corpus Christi Catholic Church, Chambersburg.

She is survived by seven grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a daughter, Annette Jacobs; a son, Robert H. Frecon Jr.; a sister and a brother.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Tuesday at 10 a.m. at Corpus Christi Catholic Church. The Rev. Daniel F. Lawler will be celebrant. Burial will be in Corpus Christi Cemetery, Chambersburg.

There will be no viewing.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Annette Frecon Jacobs Memorial Scholarship Fund, c/o Chambersburg Hospital, 112 N. Seventh St., Chambersburg, Pa. 17201.

Arrangements are by Robert G. Sellers Funeral Home, Chambersburg.

Lucille M. Dewar

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - Lucille M. Dewar, 91, of Menno Haven Nursing Home, died Friday, Aug. 7, 1998, at the nursing home.

Born March 25, 1907, in Emmett, Mich., she was the daughter of the late Daniel A. and Florence Lashbrook Dewar.

She earned a bachelor's degree from Oberlin College, Oberlin, Ohio, graduating with a membership in Phi Beta Kappa. She received a master's degree from Wayne University, Detroit.

She taught school in Flint, Mich., Birmingham, Mich. and Washington, D.C.

She was a member of Central Presbyterian Church in Chambersburg.

She was a member of Omega Chapter, Delta Kappa Gamma sorority; and Chambersburg Afternoon Club.

She is survived by three sisters, Helen Grossmann of Grand Blanc, Mich., Muriel MacDonald of Dearborn, Mich. and Margaret Sponsler of Chambersburg; nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by three sisters; and three brothers.

A private burial will be at the convenience of the family in Lambs, Mich.

Memorial donations may be made to Benevolent Fund, Menno Haven, 2075 Scotland Ave., Chambersburg, Pa. 17201; or to the charity of one's choice.

Arrangements are by Robert G. Sellers Funeral Home, 297 Philadelphia Avenue, Chambersburg.

Ethel A. Mellott

NEEDMORE, Pa. - Ethel Angeline Mellott, 76, of RD 1, Needmore, died Saturday, Aug. 8, 1998, at her home.

Born Dec. 10, 1921, in Needmore, she was the daughter of the late William L. and Annie C. Cunningham Swope.

She was a housewife.

She was a member of Sideling Hill Christian Church. She was an honorary member and past president of Sideling Hill Christian Church Ladies Aide. She taught Sunday school for more than 30 years at the church.

She was a 4-H leader and on the Licking Creek Township election board.

She is survived by her husband, Carl W. Mellott, whom she married Dec. 25, 1938; three  daughters, Erma Anderson and Marjorie Sexton, both of Needmore, and Eunice Booth of McConnellsburg, Pa.; two sons, Lyle Mellott of Needmore, and Donald E. Mellott of Greencastle, Pa.; one sister, Stella Wakefield of Needmore; 15 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and three stepgreat-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by two sisters, seven brothers, two grandchildren, and one stepgreat-great-grandchild.

Services will be held Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Sideling Hill Christian Church in Needmore. Pastor William Swope will officiate. Burial will be in Sideling Hill Christian Church Cemetery in Needmore.

Visitation will be held at Howard L. Sipes Funeral Home Inc., in Harrisonville, Pa., Tuesday from 2 to 9 p.m.; and on Wednesday one hour prior to the service at the church.
