John G. Skvarka
WATERFALL, Pa. - John G. Skvarka, 80, of Waterfall, died Friday, July 31, 1998, at Fulton County Medical Center, McConnellsburg, Pa.
Born May 20, 1918, in Somerset, Pa., he was the son of the late Samuel and Helen Roskina Skvarka.
For most of his life, he was employed at area garages as a mechanic. Earlier, he worked as a farmer and coal miner.
He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Army, as a mechanic for four years.
He was a member of Immaculate Conception Roman Catholic Church, Dudley, Pa.
He was a member of James B. McKibben Post 561 American Legion, McConnellsburg, and FOVA of McConnellsburg.
He is survived by his wife, Mary E. Diak Skvarka, whom he married April 13, 1941; three children, Roger Skvarka, Beverly Foster and Jonnie Ellen Zeger, all of McConnellsburg; five sisters and brothers, Joe Skvarka and Steve Skvarka, both of Robertsdale, Pa., Mary Backus of Mobile, Ala., Helen Rozanski of Sarasota, Fla., and Mike Skvarka of Williamsport, Pa.; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by two sisters, Betty Costello and Ann Armstrong; and a brother, George Skvarka.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Monday at 11 a.m. at Immaculate Conception Roman Catholic Church, Dudley. The Rev. Patrick Leahy will be celebrant. Burial will be in Ave Maria Cemetery, Dudley. The Fulton Honor Guard will conduct graveside military services.
Friends may call Sunday from 7 to 9 p.m. at M.R. Brown Funeral Home, Hustontown, Pa. A Scriptural wake service will be held there at 8:30 p.m.
John J. Brindle
ST. THOMAS, Pa. - John Jacob Brindle, 73, of 9998 Circle Drive, died Wednesday, July 29, 1998, at York (Pa.) Hospital.
Born July 8, 1925, in St. Thomas, he was the son of the late Kenneth H. and Edna Olive Straley Brindle.
He was employed as a shipping clerk at J. Schoneman Co. for 38 years, retiring in 1984.
He was a member of Mount Olivet United Brethren Church.
He also was a member of Fort Loudon Senior Citizens and Mercersburg Moose Club.
He is survived by his wife, Eva J. Summers Brindle, whom he married in 1949; two sons, Jack W. Brindle of Hagerstown, and James L. Brindle of Chambersburg, Pa.; three sisters, Betty L. Hoover and Mary G. Burkett, both of Greencastle, Pa., and Edna J. Yablonski of Todd, Pa.; two half sisters, Adeline Saltzman of New Mexico and Esther Smith of Chambersburg; three grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.
Services will be held Monday at 11 a.m. at Kelso-Cornelius Funeral Home, 6492 Lincoln Way West, St. Thomas. The Rev. Stan McCammon will officiate. Burial will be in Park Lawn Memorial Gardens in Chambersburg.
The family will receive friends Sunday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home, which will be open from 2 to 9 p.m.
Donald J. Burdge
CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - Donald J. Burdge, 70, of 1180 Leisure Drive, died Thursday, July 30, 1998, at his home.
Born Oct. 18, 1927, in Blairs Mills, Pa., he was the son of the late J. Bryan and Ethel Shearer Burdge.
He retired from Letterkenny Army Depot, Chambersburg.
He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Army.
He was a member of Presbyterian Church, Shippensburg, Pa.
He is survived by his wife, Arlene E. Yorks Burdge; a daughter, Debra A. Jones of Chambersburg; four sons, Glenn E. Burdge of Shippensburg, Franklin R. Neidigh and Darwin J. Burdge, both of Chambersburg, and Kenneth R. Burdge of Long Beach, Calif.; a sister, Dorothy Snyder of Blairs Mills, Pa.; a brother, Hays Burdge of East Waterford, Pa.; and seven grandchildren.
Services will be Monday at 11 a.m. at Presbyterian Church, Shippensburg. The Rev. John C. Berstecher and Meagan M. Boozer will officiate. Burial will be in Parklawns Memorial Gardens, Greene Township, Pa.
The viewing will be Sunday from 7 to 9 p.m. at Fogelsanger-Bricker Funeral Home, Shippensburg, and Monday one hour prior to services at the church.

Iva L. Fritz
GREENCASTLE, Pa. - Iva L. "Dolly" Fritz, 56, of 13260 Gearhart Road, died Thursday, July 30, 1998, at her home.
Born July 4, 1942, in Waynesboro, Pa., she was the daughter of Harvey E. Rice of Waynesboro and the late Myrtle Jane Bingaman Rice.
She was a graduate of Hagerstown Business College.
She was a homemaker and had worked in the office of Danzer Metal Works in Hagerstown.
She was a member of Bethel Assembly of God Church in Hagerstown, where she was church organist, sang on the church choir and taught Sunday School.
She enjoyed camping, gardening, bird watching and quilting.
In addition to her Father, she is survived by her husband of 38 years, Guy E. Fritz Sr.; three sons, Guy E. Fritz Jr. of Thomasville, Pa., and Russell R. Fritz and Toby A. Fritz, both of Greencastle; five sisters, Berneita Moore of Clear Spring, Betty Heacox of Marion, Pa., Mary Mayhugh of Shady Grove, Pa., Naomi Mowen of Greencastle and Jean Owens of Jacksboro, Tenn.; five brothers, Harvey Rice Jr. of Ellicott City, Md., Robert Rice, James Rice and Donald Rice, all of Waynesboro, and Paul Rice of Greencastle; six grandchildren; nieces and nephews.
Services will be Sunday at 2 p.m. at Bethel Assembly of God Church, 515 E. Wilson Blvd., Hagerstown. Pastors Terry Broadwater, Wesley Johnson and Greg Boatright will officiate. Burial will be in Beautiful View Cemetery in State Line, Md.

Mary G. Polk
FAYETTEVILLE, Pa. - Mary Gladys Polk, 90, of Caledonia Manor, and formerly of Pineville Road, Shippensburg, Pa., died Thursday, July 30, 1998, at Caledonia Manor.
Born Feb. 20, 1908, in Franklin County, Pa., she was the daughter of the late Frank and Elsie Dornberger Shores.
She was preceded in death by her husband, McKean E. Polk, in 1996.
She was a homemaker.
She was a member of Prince Street United Brethren Church, Shippensburg, where she served as president of her Sunday School class.
She is survived by a daughter, Joanne Polk Etter of Chambersburg; two sons, Sherwood M. Polk of Chambersburg and Jack T. Polk of Shippensburg; a sister, Anna Herr of Carlisle, Pa.; two brothers, Robert Shores of Lurgan, Pa., and Frank Shores of Bristol, Pa.; eight grandchildren; a great-grandson; nieces and nephews.
Services will be Monday at 2 p.m. in the chapel of Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home, 333 Falling Spring Road, Chambersburg. The Rev. Garry L. Culler will officiate. Burial will be in Norland Cemetery, Chambersburg.
Viewing will be Monday one hour prior to services at the funeral home.
Fred Robinson Jr.
MERCERSBURG, Pa. - Fred Robinson Jr., 66, of 7550 Robinson Road, died Friday, July 31, 1998, at his home.
Born June 30, 1932, near Mercersburg, he was the son of the Rev. Fred L. Robinson Sr. of Mercersburg and the late Carrie Kuhn Robinson.
He was a former employee of Lowengart Co. of Mercersburg. He also had been employed by Mico Home Building Co. of Fayetteville, Pa., and DeRose Industries of Chambersburg, Pa. He worked for 27 years at T.B. Woods and sons of Chambersburg. After he retired from T.B. Woods, he was a subcontractor for Globe/Advantage Lift of Williamson, Pa.; and D.L. Martin Co. of Mercersburg. He also was a self-employed water dowser.
He was a member of Clayton Memorial Church of God of Mercersburg.
In addition to his Father, he is survived by his wife, Della M. Stokes Robinson, whom he married Oct. 7, 1949; three daughters, Sarah E. Bourne Long of Shippensburg, Pa., and Beverly Widdows and Susan Egolf, both of Mercersburg; three sons, Terry L. Robinson and Dana L. Robinson, both of Mercersburg, and Lawrence D. Robinson of Spring Run, Pa.; seven sisters, Velma Schooley, Dorcas Mellott, Shelby Carbaugh, Joyce Zeger, Bonnie Harbel, all of Mercersburg, Sharon Ott of Greencastle, Pa., and Devonia Fox of Glen Dale, W.Va.; four brothers, Carl L. Robinson, Paul D. Robinson, Donald D. Robinson, all of Mercersburg, and Bobbie Robinson of Chambersburg; 12 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a brother.
Services will be Monday at 10 a.m. at Clayton Memorial Church of God, 6701 Charlestown Road, Mercersburg. The Revs. Kelly Shope, Floyd E. Myers and Sarah E. Clayton will officiate. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery, Mercersburg.
Viewing will be Sunday from 6 to 9 p.m. at Lininger-Fries Funeral Home, 47 N. Park Ave., Mercersburg; and on Monday one hour prior to the services at the church.
C. Kenneth Gordon
McCONNELLSBURG, Pa. - C. Kenneth Gordon, 87, a resident of Extended Care Unit of Fulton County Medical Center, and formerly of R.D. 2, Box 227, McConnellsburg, Pa., died Saturday, Aug. 1, 1998, at Fulton County Medical Center.
Born Aug. 31, 1910, in McConnellsburg, he was the son of the late Luther R. and Sophia Houck Gordon.
His wife, Lois Pollock Kendall Gordon, died in 1977.
He was a farmer in Fulton County for all of his life.
He was a member of McConnellsburg United Presbyterian Church, where he held various offices.
He was a life member of McConnellsburg Volunteer Fire Co., a former member of McConnellsburg School Board, Dairy Herd Improvement Association, past master farmer, and a former member of Fulton County Extension Agency.
He is survived by one son, John K. Gordon of McConnellsburg; three sisters, Margaret Paylor of Mercersburg, Pa., Velma Lake of Rouzerville, Pa., and Mary Richards of McConnellsburg; one brother, Roy Gordon of McConnellsburg; six grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by three sons, Kenneth Earl Gordon, Glenn M. Gordon and James Gordon; one grandchild; and one great-grandchild.
Services will be held Wednesday at 10 a.m. at McConnellsburg United Presbyterian Church. The Rev. Trent Hancock and the Rev. Angela Hancock will officiate. Burial will be in Union Cemetery in McConnellsburg.
The family will receive friends at Kelso-Cornelius Funeral Home, 322 N. Second St., in McConnellsburg, Tuesday from 7 to 9 p.m. For the convenience of friends the funeral home will be open from 2 to 9 p.m.

Anna C. Kendle
CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - Anna C. Kendle, 90, a resident of Menno Haven, and formerly of 1559 Edgar Ave., died Saturday, Aug. 1, 1998, at Menno-Haven in Chambersburg.
Born Dec. 10, 1907, in State Line, she was the daughter of the late Charles C. and Mary E. Stine Zimmerman.
Her husband, Roy M. Kendle, died in 1983.
She attended school in Greencastle, Pa., and was a 1925 graduate of the former Waynesboro Business College in Waynesboro, Pa.
She was employed by the former Moller Organ Co. in Hagerstown, and the former Interwoven Inc. in Chambersburg. She was then employed in the office of the former Chambersburg pediatrician Dr. Owen W. Hartman for many years; and retired from the former Stanley Co. in Chambersburg in 1973. After retirement, she worked as a seamstress in her home until she was 89 years old.
She was a member of Calvary United Methodist Church in Fayetteville, Pa., and the Eunice Bible Class.
She was a member of Falling Spring Chapter 2840 AARP in Chambersburg.
She is survived by one daughter, Betty L. Byers of Fayetteville; one son, Jack E. Kendle of Millsboro, Del.; one brother, Robert Zimmerman of Greencastle; seven grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and an aunt.
She was preceded in death by one brother, Harold Zimmerman; and one grandson.
Services will be held Wednesday at 10 a.m. at Calvary United Methodist Church, 150 Norlo Drive, Fayetteville. The Rev. Richard B. Cartwright will officiate. Burial will be in Lincoln Cemetery in Chambersburg.

Charles E. Kendall
BEDFORD, Pa. - Charles E. Kendall, 61, of R.D. 2, died Sunday, Aug. 2, 1998, at Oakland Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Pittsburgh.
Born Sept. 14, 1936, in Pondsville, Md., he was the son of the late Daniel W. and Carleda Deatrich Kendall Holtzman.
He was a self-employed electrician, and a former meat cutter at U-Save Market in Altoona, Pa.
A veteran of the Korean War, he served in the U.S. Army in the 82nd Airborne, 24th Division, 19th Infantry Regiment.
He was a member of Everett American Legion Post 0008, Everett V.F.W. Post 2088, was a ball player, and a softball manager with the Schellsburg Softball League and Everett All-Stars.
He is survived by his wife, Judy E. Nicodemus Kendall, whom he married Jan. 7, 1966; three daughters, Debra Odin of Smithsburg, Tina M. Williams and Brenda L. Kline, both of Hagerstown; two sisters, Louise Sheedy of Boonsboro, and Margaret Wetzel of Hagerstown; one brother, Ezra Holtzman of Hagerstown; and six grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Reno Kendall and Henry "Butch" Holtzman Jr.
Services will be held Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Mickle-Geisel Funeral Home in Schellsburg, Pa. The Rev. Charles Rhodes and the Rev. Joseph Yurko will officiate. Burial will be in Mount Olivet Cemetery in Manns Choice, Pa., with graveside military services conducted by the Fort Bedford Honor Guard.
A viewing will be held at the funeral home today from 3 to 9 p.m.
