Carson W. Defenderfer
CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - Carson W. Defenderfer, 78, of 134 E. Liberty St., died Saturday, July 18, 1998, at Franklin County Nursing Home, Chambersburg.
Born Nov. 8, 1919, in Chambersburg, he was the son of the late Robert E. and Carrie Gelwicks Defenderfer.
He was employed as a lift operator for 35 years by Letterkenny Army Depot, Chambersburg.
He was a veteran of World War II. He served with the U.S. Army, Co. C, 302nd Medical Battalion in the Philippines and Western Pacific.
He was a member of First Evangelical Lutheran Church, Chambersburg.
He was a life member of Burt J. Asper American Legion Post 46, where he served on the honor guard; Charles M. Nitterhouse Post 1599 VFW and Disabled American Veterans Chapter 110. He was a member of Goodwill Fire Co. and National Association of Retired Federal Employees.
He is survived by his wife, Bertha H. Hoover Defenderfer, whom he married on Dec. 21, 1946; two sons, Michael C. Defenderfer of Chambersburg and Thomas E. Defenderfer of Palmyra, Pa.; three sisters, Phoebe Jones, Ruth Jones and Esther Snider, all of Chambersburg; one brother, Jerry Defenderfer of Chambersburg; four grandchildren; three stepgrandchildren; and two stepgreat-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his twin brother, Harold Defenderfer; another brother, Robert Defenderfer; and one grandson.
Services will be Tuesday at 11:30 a.m. in the chapel of Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home, 333 Falling Spring Road, Chambersburg. The Rev. Charles Kampmeyer will officiate. Burial will be in Air Hill Cemetery, Chambersburg. Military graveside services will be conducted by Charles M. Nitterhouse Post 1599 VFW.
Visitation will be at the funeral home Tuesday one hour prior to the service.

Jacqueline E. Mojica
SANTA CRUZ, Calif. - Jacqueline E. "Jackie" Bamma Mojica, formerly of Hagerstown, died Tuesday, July 14, 1998, in Santa Cruz.
Born in Lancaster, Pa., she was the daughter of the late Jack Robinson and Mary Bamma O'Neal.
She attended school in Lancaster and Hagerstown.
She was a Christian.
She is survived by two sisters, Clara Stansbury of Aberdeen, Md., and Margaret Hunter of Detroit; six nieces; four nephews; four great-nephews; and a special friend, Gus A. Bester Jr., whom she took care of.
She was preceded in death by two sisters, Dorothy Robinson and Odessa Robinson; and four brothers, Charles Glassco, George Jones, Wilmer Green and James Robinson.
Graveside services will be Friday at 12:15 p.m. at Rose Hill Cemetery, Hagerstown.
Lela M. Patterson Monn
WAYNESBORO, Pa. - Lela M. Patterson Monn, 90, of 9313 Capitol Hill Road, died Saturday, July 18, 1998, at her home.
Born Sept. 22, 1907, in Fairview, Pa., she was the daughter of the late William and Ida Moats Stull. She lived all of her life in Tomstown, Pa., and Fairview.
She was preceded in death by her first husband, Clarence R. Patterson, in 1929; and her second husband, Samuel D.J. Monn, in 1944.
In her early life, she was employed by orchards and tomato farms in the area.
She was a charter member of Fairview Chapel.
She is survived by three sons, Lawrence W. "Amos" Patterson of Waynesboro, Benjamin Richard Bakner of South Mountain, Pa., and John Robert Monn Sr. of Fairview; 29 grandchildren; 15 stepgrandchildren; 48 great-grandchildren; 10 stepgreat-grandchildren; 26 great-great-grandchildren; nine stepgreat-great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by three children, Clarence R. Patterson, Clark W. Patterson and Jean Monn; one brother, William Stull; seven half brothers and half sisters, Robert Stull, Leroy Stull, Hanzey Stull, Merl Stull, Bertis Freeman, Susan Triesh and Hermie Freeman.
Services will be Thursday at 1:30 p.m. at Fairview Chapel, 8948 Capitol Hill Road, Waynesboro. The Rev. Dale R. Martin, the Rev. Wayne L. Kuhns and the Rev. H. Nelson Lehman will officiate. Burial will be in Mount Zion Cemetery, near Quincy.
The family will receive friends at Grove Funeral Home, 50 S. Broad St., Waynesboro, Wednesday from 7 to 9 p.m. and at the church 30 minutes prior to the service Thursday.
Ruth F. Mumma
CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - Ruth F. Mumma, 86, a resident of Menno Haven, and formerly of Waynesboro, Pa., died Sunday, July 19, 1998, at the nursing home.
Born Nov. 13, 1911, in Waynesboro, she was the daughter of the late John G. and Ann Lizzie Fisher Mumma. She lived most of life in the Waynesboro area and was a resident of Menno Haven for the past 27 years.
She was a graduate of Penn Hall Junior College in Chambersburg and also attended school at Linden Hall, Lititz, Pa.
She was a member of St. Andrew Roman Catholic Church, Waynesboro.
She is survived by one sister, Elizabeth M. Snively, Waynesboro; and nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by three sisters, Beulah Mumma, Lillian DiGiammarino and Grace Thompson; and two brothers, Ralph Mumma and Paul Mumma.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Wednesday at 10 a.m. at St. Andrew Roman Catholic Church, 12 N. Broad St., Waynesboro. The Rev. Thomas J. Helmer will be celebrant. Burial will be in Green Hill Cemetery, Waynesboro.
There will be no viewing.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Menno Haven Benevolent Fund, 2075 Scotland Ave., Chambersburg, Pa. 17201.

Evelyn A. Cunningham
MOUNT WOLF, Pa. - Evelyn A. Cunningham, 81, of 5150 Board Road, died Tuesday, July 21, 1998, at York Hospital, York, Pa.
Born Dec. 26, 1916, in Shippensburg, Pa., she was the daughter of the late Clarence L. and Sarah A. Brinkerhoff Grove.
She was preceded in death by her husband, George Lloyd Cunningham, in 1967.
She was a graduate of Harrisburg Beauty School.
She was a beautician for 50 years.
She was a guard at Letterkenny Army Depot during World War II.
She was a member of Newberrytown Church of God in Pennsylvania.
She is survived by a stepdaughter, Jeannine Morrison of Lutherville, Md.; a sister, Bernita Shaffer of Mount Wolf; a brother, Leslie Grove of Oakhurst, N.J.; three stepgrandchildren; and two stepgreat-grandchildren.
Services will be Friday at 2 p.m. at Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd., Hagerstown. The Rev. David A. Yost will officiate. Burial will be in Rose HIll Cemetery, Hagerstown.
The family will receive friends Friday one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
Marian E. Miller
CARLISLE, Pa. - Marian Elizabeth Miller, 82, of Cumberland Crossings Retirement Community and formerly of 452 W. Queen St., Chambersburg, Pa., died Wednesday, July 22, 1998, at Cumberland Crossings Nursing Home.
Born Aug. 28, 1915, in Pleasant Hall, Pa., she was the daughter of the late Ollie and Elizabeth Martin Upperman.
She was a graduate of Chambersburg High School.
Early in her life, she was employed at Letterkenny Army Depot. She was employed for 20 years as a seamstress at Stanley Co., Chambersburg. After retiring from Stanley she was employed at Long's Jewelers in Chambersburg for 10 years.
She was a member of First United Methodist Church, Chambersburg, where she taught in the cradle roll department.
She was a member of Falling Spring Court 139 Order of Amaranth, Chambersburg, where she was associate matron; and served as secretary. She was a member of Samaria Shrine 43, Order of the White Shrine of Jerusalem, Gettysburg, Pa. She was a member of Martha Custis Chapter 342, Order of Eastern Star, Chambersburg.
She is survived by two daughters, Joanne E. Bonner of Lewes, Del., and Barbara L. Gabler of Wyoming, Del.; two sisters, Dorothy Coy of Shippensburg, Pa., and Jane Smith of Winter Park, Fla.; five brothers, Kenneth Upperman, Herbert Upperman and Jay Upperman, all of Chambersburg, Paul Upperman of Hershey, Pa., and Richard Upperman of Micco, Fla.; five grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a sister and a brother.
Services will be Saturday at 1 p.m. in the chapel of Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home, 333 Falling Spring Road, Chambersburg. The Rev. William M. Brown will officiate. Burial will be in St. Thomas Cemetery, St. Thomas, Pa.
Viewing will be Saturday from noon to 12:30 p.m. prior to the services at the funeral home.
Members of Falling Spring Court 139 Order of Amaranth will conduct services Saturday at 12:45 p.m. at the funeral home.

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - Ruth L. Moore, 76, of 1853 Dawn Lane, died Tuesday, July 21, 1998, at Chambersburg Hospital.
Born Nov. 26, 1921, in Fayette City, Pa., she was the daughter of the late Allen F. and Anna M. Legg Stephens.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Gerald T. Moore, in 1986.
She was a 1937 graduate of Brownsville High School, Brownsville, Pa.
She retired in 1986 after 14 years of service at Letterkenny Army Depot as an office worker.
She was a member of Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints First Ward, Chambersburg. She was a member of Relief Society through the church.
She is survived by a son, Gerald A. Moore of Chambersburg; three sisters, Isabel D. Chalfant of Grindstone, Pa., Beatrice A. Stephens of Lowber, Pa. and Florence B. Pope of Burbank, Calif.; a brother, Jack E. Stephens of Simi Valley, Calif.; and three grandchildren whom she raised, Paul G. Moore, Colleen M. Moore and Annmarle Moore, all of Chambersburg.
She was preceded in death by a sister, Bessie E. Stephens, in 1997; and a brother, Allen M. Stephens, in 1992.
Services will be Saturday at 11:30 a.m. in the chapel of Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home, 333 Falling Spring Road, Chambersburg. Bishop Rodger Miller will officiate. Burial will be in Parklawns Memorial Gardens, Chambersburg.

Louise S. Brough
CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - Louise S. Brough, 72, of 2270 Letterkenny Road, died Tuesday, July 21, 1998, at her home.
Born Sept. 5, 1925, in Fayetteville, Pa., she was the daughter of the late Jacob C. and Ada C. Jacobs Sprow.
She had been employed early in her life at Letterkenny Army Depot. She was later employed with the former H.J. Heinz Co., Chambersburg. She retired from Knouse Foods, Chambersburg.
She was a member of Chambersburg Brethren in Christ Church.
She enjoyed collecting porcelain dolls, crocheting, swimming and making crafts.
She is survived by her husband of more than 53 years, John S. Brough; a daughter, Ada M. Eckenrode of Chambersburg; two sisters, Leona V. Martin of South Mountain, Pa., and Velva I. Stoner of Fayetteville; two granddaughters; and four great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by three sisters and six brothers.
Services will be Friday at 1 p.m. in the chapel of Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home, 333 Falling Spring Road, Chambersburg. The Rev. Daniel H. Kelchner will officiate. Burial will be in Parklawns Memorial Gardens, Chambersburg.
