Betty J. Yeager

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - Betty J. Yeager, 68, of 979 Boyer Mill Road, died Friday, June 26, 1998, at Alexandria Hospital in Alexandria, Va.

Born March 31, 1930, in Franklin County, Pa., she was the daughter of the late Norman H. and Eva S. Spangler Alleman.

She was a homemaker.

She was a member of Strasburg Mennonite Church.

She is survived by her husband, Marlin S. Yeager; two  daughters, M. Jane Reiff of Shippensburg, Pa., and Ruby F. Ocker of Chambersburg; a son, John E. Yeager of Chambersburg; three sisters, Erma Gettle of Shippensburg, and Anna Rife and Mary Lesher, both of Chambersburg; three brothers, Paul F. Alleman and Glenn Alleman, both of Chambersburg, and Nelson Alleman of Gainsville, Ga.; and seven grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a sister, Helen Alleman.

Services will be held Tuesday at 10 a.m. at Chambersburg Mennonite Church, 1800 Philadelphia Ave., Chambersburg. Nathan Wadel and Allen Fleagle will officiate. Burial will be in Chambersburg Mennonite Cemetery.

A viewing will be held at Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home, 333 Falling Spring Road, Chambersburg, today from 6 to 9 p.m., and at the church one hour prior to services on Tuesday.

The family requests the omission of flowers.

Grace V. Hopewell

FAYETTEVILLE, Pa. - Grace Virginia Brooks Hopewell, 90, a resident of Caledonia Manor Nursing Home, and formerly of 423 Chestnut St., Waynesboro, Pa., Hagerstown and Baltimore, died Saturday, June 27, 1998, at the nursing home.

Born Oct. 22, 1907, near Burkittsville, Md., she was the daughter of the late Harold L. and Rebecca Hopewell Brooks.

She attended two years of high school in Baltimore and graduated from Coughlin High School in Wilkes-Barre, Pa., in 1928. She then received her degree in education from Coppin Normal School in Baltimore.

She was a substitute teacher in the Baltimore area, and then was employed at Letterkenny Army Depot as a secretary for five years.

While living in Hagerstown, she was a member of Ebenezer AME Church and the Sunday school. She then was a member of St. Paul AME Church in Waynesboro, where she taught Sunday school and was a member of the Snowden-Watts Missionary Society.

She was a former member of North Street YMCA in Hagerstown, and a member and past matron of Deborah Order of the Eastern Star Chapter 12 in Hagerstown, Frederick Valley Assembly Order of the Golden Circle 270 in Frederick, Md., Waynesboro Hospital Auxiliary, South Chapter 2977 AARP and the national AARP.

She volunteered at Waynesboro Hospital and enjoyed making afghans, baby blankets, sweaters and coats.

She is survived by her husband, Theodore R. Hopewell Sr. of Waynesboro, whom she married March 25, 1937.; a son, T. Russell Hopewell Jr. of Baltimore; a sister, Evva E. Jones of Hagerstown; two grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by two brothers, Millard Brooks and Charles Brooks.

Services will be held Wednesday at 10 a.m. at St. Paul AME Church, Waynesboro. Pastor Gregory P. Nelson will officiate. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery, Hagerstown, where an Eastern Star memorial service will be at 8 p.m.

There will be no public viewing; however, the family will receive friends at Grove Funeral Home, 50 S. Broad St., Waynesboro, from 7 to 8 p.m. Tuesday.

Memorial donations may be made to St. Paul AME Church, 30 W. King St., Waynesboro, Pa. 17268.

Sidney Miller

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - Sidney Miller, 98, a resident of Manorcare Health Services, and formerly of 606 W. Main St., Waynesboro, Pa., Youngstown, Ohio, and Bobtown, Pa., died Saturday, June 27, 1998, at the nursing home.

Born April 12, 1900, in Chap, W.Va., he was the son of the late Henry M. Miller and Amanda Gunnoe Holtsclaw.

His first wife, Vina A. Darby Miller, died in 1972. They were married Dec. 23, 1922. His second wife, Thelma P. Perry Miller, died in 1980. His third wife, Lettie Smith Miller, died in 1984.

He worked most of his life in the coal mines of Fayette and Greene counties. Before retiring in 1962, he worked at the Shannopin mine in Bobtown.

He was a member of Bobtown United Methodist Church and taught adult Sunday school for a number of years. He also was church custodian.

He also was a member of United Mine Workers of America Local 6159.

He enjoyed hunting, fishing and gardening.

He is survived by his wife, Mary G. Marcum Miller of Youngstown; a daughter, Anna M. Bargerstock of Kent, Ohio; three sons, Sidney E. Miller of Mont Alto, Pa., and Arthur D. Miller and James Byrl Miller, both of Waynesboro; a half brother, Wilburn Morris of Youngstown; a number of stepchildren; 31 grandchildren; many great-grandchildren; and a nephew.

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Sarah C. Buchanan; two sons, Virgil E. Miller and Delbert D. Miller; and two sisters, Cleo Morris and Dora Crawford.

Services will be held Tuesday at 10 a.m. at Bobtown United Methodist Church, Bobtown. Pastor Erwin "Woody" Wilson will officiate. Burial will be in Evergreen Memorial Park, Point Marion, Pa.

The family will receive friends at Richard R. Herod Funeral Home, 501 Morgantown St., Point Marion, today from 7 to 9 p.m.; and one hour prior to services at the church.

Memorial donations may be made to the charity of one's choice.

Local arrangements were by Grove Funeral Home, Waynesboro.

Clair L. Wrights

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - Clair "Sam" L. Wrights, 74, of 465 Warm Spring Road, died Friday, June 19, 1998.

A memorial service will be held Friday at 3 p.m. at Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church, 26 W. Commerce St., Chambersburg. The Rev. Neal Hively will officiate. Burial will be private.

The family requests the omission of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the church.

John G. Whitfield Sr.

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - John G. Whitfield Sr., 89, a resident of Penn Hall, and formerly of Hollidaysburg, Pa., and 805 Meadowbrook Lane, Chambersburg, died Sunday, June 28, 1998, at the nursing center.

Born June 17, 1909, in Crystal Springs, Pa., he was the son of the late Benjamin F. and Carrie Barton Whitfield.

His wife, D. Eileen Schleich Whitfield, died in 1986.

He was a car repairman for Pennsylvania Railroad in Chambersburb for 46 years, retiring in November 1973.

He was a member of Chambersburg Bible Church.

He was a former member of Jolly 60s in Chambersburg.

He is survived by two  daughters, Joann Poppenwimer of Chambersburg, and Jean Hooper of Harrisburg, Pa.; one son, John G. Whitfield Jr. of Claymont, Del.; 11 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by six sisters and three brothers.

Services will be held Wednesday at 1 p.m. in the chapel of Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home, 333 Falling Spring Road, Chambersburg. The Rev. John R. Springer will officiate. Burial will be Thursday in Alto Reste Cemetery in Altoona, Pa.

A viewing will be held at the Geisel funeral home Wednesday one hour prior to the service. Another viewing will be held in the chapel of Alto Reste Cemetery Thursday from 1 to 2 p.m., prior to burial.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Chambersburg Bible Church, 810 Orchard Drive, Chambersburg, Pa. 17201.

Harry T. Brunner

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - Harry T. Brunner, 73, of 9526 Gilbert Road, died Sunday, June 28, 1998, at his home.

Born June 12, 1925, in Chambersburg, he was the son of the late Herman O. and Cora Mackey Brunner.

His wife, D. Marie Rotz Brunner, died in 1984.

He was a supervisor of maintenance for the U.S. government at Site R in Pennsylvania for more than 20 years.

He served with the U.S. Army.

He was a member of American Legion Post 517 in Mercersburg, Pa.

He is survived by two  daughters, Gloria F. Chestnut of Newville, Pa., and Tina M. Englehart of Lugoff, S.C.; two sons, Kenneth W. Brunner and Floyd E. Brunner, both of Chambersburg; seven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one brother, Herman Brunner.

Services will be Wednesday at 10 a.m. in the chapel of Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home, 333 Falling Spring Road, Chambersburg. Pastor Stan V. McGammon will officiate. Burial will be in Parklawns Memorial Gardens in Chambersburg.

A viewing will be held at the funeral home one hour prior to the service on Wednesday.

The family requests the omission of flowers. Memorial donations may be made to Mount Olivet United Brethren Church, 8204 Fort McCord Road, Chambersburg, Pa. 17201.

Larry L. Barnhart Sr.

NEEDMORE, Pa. - Larry Lee Barnhart Sr., 50, of HCR 81, died Sunday, June 28, 1998, at Morgan County War Memorial Hospital in Berkeley Springs, W.Va.

Born in Hagerstown on Nov. 27, 1947, he was the son of the late Howard L. and Martha C. Fisher Barnhart.

He was a 1965 graduate of Southern Fulton High School.

He was employed as a truck driver by E.C. Barnes Inc. in St. Thomas, Pa.

He attended Needmore Holiness Church in Needmore.

He is survived by his wife, Norma Darlene Francis Barnhart, whom he married on Oct. 29, 1966; two  daughters, Dawn R. Younker of Needmore, and Shannon L. Barnhart of Berkeley Springs; three sons, Larry L. Barnhart Jr. and Tony S. Barnhart, both of Needmore, and Michael A. Barnhart, at home; four grandchildren; and one stepgrandchild.

He was preceded in death by one brother, Kenny G. Sigel.

Services will be held Wednesday at 3 p.m. at Cedar Grove Christian Church, Needmore. The Rev. John Richards will officiate. Burial will be in the adjoining church cemetery.

The family will receive friends at Grove Funeral Home, 141 W. Main St., Hancock, today from 4 to 9 p.m., and at the church one hour prior to the service on Wednesday.

Memorial donations may be made to Hancock Rescue Squad Inc., 14734 Warfordsburg Road, Hancock, Md. 21750; or to Needmore Fire Co., Needmore, Pa. 17238.

Martha E. McQuade

McCONNELLSBURG, Pa. - Martha E. McQuade, 84, of R.R. 2, Box 179, died Sunday, June 28, 1998, at Chambersburg Hospital.

Born Feb. 6, 1914, in Cito, Pa., she was the daughter of the late Elmer and Sarah Shaffer Seiders.

Her husband, John McQuade, died in 1996.

She was a homemaker.

She was of the Protestant faith.

She is survived by three  daughters, Esther Miller of McConnellsburg, Marna Lake of Big Cove Tannery, Pa., and Susan Hill of Needmore, Pa.; two sons, Harold McQuade and David M. McQuade, both of McConnellsburg; 13 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by three sisters, Bessie Bain, Carrie Mellott and Margaret Black; and two brothers, Paul Seiders and Chester Seiders.

Services will be Thursday at 10 a.m. at Kelso-Cornelius Funeral Home Inc., 322 N. Second St., McConnellsburg. The Rev. Kevin Wade will officiate. Burial will be in Union Cemetery in McConnellsburg.

Visitation will be held at the funeral home Wednesday from 2 to 9 p.m., and the family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m., and one hour prior to the service.
