Pennsylvania Obituary and Marriage Records, 1947-2010

D. Robert Jacobs

INDIANA, Pa. - Dr. D. Robert Jacobs, 66, of Indiana, died Monday, June 8, 1998, at Indiana Hospital.

Born May 17, 1932, in Waynesboro, Pa., he was the son of Helen Garman Jacobs and the late Robert F. Jacobs.

He was a 1950 graduate of Waynesboro High School. He received a bachelor of science degree from Franklin and Marshall College in Lancaster, Pa.; a master of science in clinical psychology from Penn State; and a Ph.D. in social psychology from Wayne State University, Detroit. He also received an associate degree from Hagerstown Junior College.

He served in the U.S. Army from 1954 to 1956.

He was a member of the psychology department at Laurelton State School and Hospital in Laurelton, Pa., from 1959 to 1963. In Detroit, he worked as a teaching assistant and later as a research assistant to Dr. Ross Stagner, the chairman of WSU Psychology Department. In 1967 he joined the psychology department at IUP and taught general and social psychology there until his retirement as emeritus professor in December 1991.

He served on the Indiana Board of the Pennsylvania Association of Retired School Employees; was a member of APSCURF; IUP Retired Faculty Association; Mental Health Association; Indiana Arts Council; Friends of the Indiana Free Library; Human Relations Committee of Indiana; Common Cause; Public Citizen; Herb Study Group of Indiana; ACLU; Public Concern Foundation; American Psychological Society; and Society for the Psychological Study of Social Issues.

He was a member of Trinity United Church of Christ, Waynesboro; but later become a Buddhist.

In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife, Dr. Pepita Jimenez-Jacobs of Balanga, Bataan, Philippines and Indiana; four children, J. Albert Jacobs of Indiana; J. David Jacobs of Redondo Beach, Calif., J. Andrew Jacobs and M. Elaine Jacobs of Penn Run, Pa.; a sister, Martha J. Mathias, of Waynesboro; and nieces, nephews and cousins.

There will be no funeral or memorial services.

Harold L. Sanders Jr.

WAYNESBORO, Pa. - Harold L. Sanders Jr., 58, of 11960 Pen Mar Road, died Monday, June 15, 1998, at Gettysburg Hospital.

Born Sept. 18, 1939, in Highfield, Pa., he was the son of Harold L. Sanders Sr. of Gettysburg, Pa., and the late Genevieve Sheffler Sanders.

He served in the U.S. Navy from 1957 to 1959.

He was employed by Mack Trucks, Hagerstown, as a maintenance supervisor for 32 years. He retired on disability in 1989.

He was a member of Order of the Owls Nest 1073, Waynesboro.

In addition to his  Father, he is survived by his wife, Connie F. Gates Sanders, whom he married June 6, 1967; a daughter, Cindy R. Clark of Waynesboro; three sons, Harold L. Sanders III of Elgin, S.C., Bryan A. Sanders and Keith E. Sanders, both of Waynesboro; one sister, Ruth Ann Banks of Waynesboro; and 11 grandchildren.

The family requests the omission of flowers.

Memorial donations may be made to the family, c/o Connie Sanders, 11960 Pen Mar Road, Waynesboro, Pa. 17268.

Arrangements are by Cumberland Valley Crematorium, Waynesboro.

Mary E. Shatzley

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - Mary E. Shatzley, 81, a resident at ManorCare Health Services, and formerly of 5300 Lincoln Way East in Fayetteville, Pa., died Tuesday, June 16, 1998, at ManorCare.

Born Feb. 21, 1917, in Fayetteville, she was the daughter of the late John G. Reasner Sr. and Goldie Baughman Reasner.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Paul S. Shatzley, in 1959.

She was a beautician at Mary's Beauty Spot in Fayetteville for more than 30 years before her retirement. She previously had been employed at the Former Hanson's Hosiery in Chambersburg.

She was a member of Calvary United Methodist Church, Fayetteville.

She is survived by two  daughters, Joyce Misner of Shippensburg, Pa., and Esther Weaver of Chambersburg; two sons, Paul S. Shatzley of Pleasant Hall, Pa., and Donald R. Shatzley of Seattle, Wash.; two brothers, John G. Reasner Jr. of Chambersburg and Charles A. Reasner of San Antonio; 15 grandchildren; and 22 great-grandchildren.

Graveside services in Lincoln Cemetery, Chambersburg, will be private. The Rev. Richard A. Cartwright will officiate.

There will be no public viewing.

The family requests the omission of flowers. Memorial contributions may be made to Calvary United Methodist Church, 150 Norlo Drive, Fayetteville, Pa. 17222.

Arrangements are by Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home, Chambersburg.

Faye V. Bradley

GREENCASTLE, Pa. - Faye V. Bradley, 75, of 11033 Welsh Run Road, died Monday, June 15, 1998, at Chambersburg Hospital, Chambersburg, Pa.

Born June 28, 1922, in Kasiesville, Pa., she was the daughter of the late Emmert E. and Avis Hoover Stevens.

She was an employee of the former Gem Garment Co., Greencastle. She had been employed by Stanley Co., Chambersburg; Mercersburg Inn, Mercersburg; and Castle Green Motel, Greencastle.

She is survived by two  daughters, Bonita Murray and Brenda Mellott, both of Chambersburg; one son, Larry D. Bradley of Chambersburg; three sisters, Retha Daley of Mercersburg, Maude Beckwith and Janette Saylor, both of Greencastle; one brother, Wilson Stevens of Greencastle; two grandchildren; one stepgranddaughter; and one stepgreat-granddaughter.

She was preceded in death by an infant son, Gregory A. Bradley.

Services will be Thursday at 2 p.m. at Lininger-Fries Funeral Home, 47 N. Park Ave., Mercersburg. The Rev. Bill Shank will officiate. Burial will be in Welsh Run Brethren Cemetery, Welsh Run, Pa.

Visitation will be at the funeral home today from 7 to 9 p.m.

Memorial donations may be made to Lutheran Home Care, 2700 Luther Drive, Chambersburg, Pa. 17201.

Pauline J. Monn

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - Pauline J. Monn, 68, of 207 Shatzers Orchard Road, and formerly of Plattsburgh, N.Y., died Tuesday, June 16, 1998, at Harrisburg (Pa.) General Hospital.

Born Nov. 10, 1929, in McConnellsburg, Pa., she was the daughter of Emmer Fittry Seville of Greencastle, Pa., and the late David Seville Sr.

She was a nurse's aide at Sacred Heart Nursing Home, Plattsburgh.

She was of the Protestant faith.

She is survived by her husband, Alfred E. Monn, whom she married in 1978; one daughter, Debra Gelwicks of Chambersburg; six sons, David Gelwicks of St. Thomas, Pa., Daniel Gelwicks of Fayetteville, Pa., Keith Gelwicks of Marion, Pa., Kelly Gelwicks and Troy Gelwicks, both of Chambersburg, and Dwayne Gelwicks of Plattsburgh; two sisters, Stella Mellott of Mercersburg, Pa., and Olive Cisney of McConnellsburg, Pa.; one brother, David E. Seville Jr. of Scotland, Pa.; three stepchildren, Tina Carlson of Ohio, Teresa Shumaker of Maryland and Terri Guyer of Mercersburg; 17 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and four stepgrandchildren.

Services will be Saturday at 2 p.m. at Kelso-Cornelius Funeral Home, St. Thomas, Pa. The Rev. Chuck Schroer will officiate. Burial will be in Parklawn Memorial Gardens, Chambersburg.

Visitation will be Friday from 2 to 9 p.m., with the family receiving friends from 7 to 9 p.m., and Saturday one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

Bernita H. Henry

HARRISONVILLE, Pa. - Bernita Hope Henry, 75, of HCR 74, died Tuesday, June 16, 1998, at Fulton County Medical Center, McConnellsburg, Pa.

Born June 22, 1922, in Pittsburgh, she was the daughter of the late George and Jessie Cutchall Tritle.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Nathan R. Henry, in 1997.

She was a graduate of Hustontown High School and the former Huntingdon Secretarial School.

In her earlier years, she had worked as a secretary for the former Pennsylvania Department of Highways and the Fulton County Assistance Office. In later years, she was a homemaker.

She was a member of Center United Methodist Church, Waterfall, Pa., where she was a Sunday school and Bible school teacher. She was a member of the Women's Society of the church and was active in preparations for the church festivals.

She was one of the founding members of the Ladies Auxiliary to the Hustontown Area Volunteer Fire Co.

She is survived by one daughter, Hope Clark of Swissvale, Pa.; one son, Nathan Henry II of Harrisonville; and three grandchildren.

Services will be Friday at 2 p.m. at M.R. Brown Funeral Home, Hustontown. Pastor Dave Arnold will officiate. Burial will be in Center Cemetery, Waterfall.

Friends may call at the funeral home today from 2 to 9 p.m. and Friday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

D. Robert Jacobs

INDIANA, Pa. - Dr. D. Robert Jacobs, 66, of Indiana, who died Monday, June 8, 1998, was a member of Trinity United Church of Christ, Waynesboro, Pa., but had become ecumenical in the spirit of Pope John XXIII and the Buddhist faith.

Mary T. Burr

AURORA, Colo. - Mary Thomas Burr, 80, of Aurora and formerly of Greencastle, Pa., died of cancer Monday, June 1, 1998, in Denver.

Born Aug. 18, 1917, in Easton, Pa., she was the daughter of the late George and Ruth Thomas.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Harold Burr, in 1986. They were married on April 20, 1940.

She was a 1935 graduate of Wilson High School. She was a journalism graduate of Kansas State University. She did graduate work in education at Shippensburg State College.

She taught school for several years at South Hagerstown High School in Hagerstown; and for more than 20 years in Greencastle, Pa. Earlier she had worked at the news desk for the Easton Daily Express. She and her husband also operated Linden Avenue Greenhouse and Florist Shop, and with her parents owned a holly farm and tree orchard at Worleytown, Pa.

She was a member of Parkview Congregational Church UCC, where she was a deacon and lay reader. She was a member of a denominational church development board for Rocky Mountain Conference.

She was a member of the Lions' Club; Greencastle Women's Club and was active in Chambersburg Community Theatre.

She also was a member of a readers' theater; a volunteer at the Air Force Academy; and was a docent at Molly Brown House. She was a participant in "Spellbinders," a storytelling group in the elementary schools.

She is survived by a daughter, Virginia B. Gruszka of Chalfont, Pa.; a son, Charles H. Burr of Georgetown, Del.; a brother, the Rev. John Thomas of Aurora, Colo.; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

A memorial service was held Thursday, June 4, at Parkview Congregational Church, Aurora.

Her cremated remains will be buried in Easton Cemetery, Easton.

Memorial donations may be made to Community Endowment Fund, c/o Parkview Congregational Church, 12444 Parkview Drive, Aurora, Colo. 80011.

Arrangements were by Fairmount Mortuary, Denver.

Richard W. Crum

WAYNESBORO, Pa. - Richard W. Crum, 88, of 8774 Oxford Circle, died Wednesday, June 17, 1998, at his home.

Born Oct. 8, 1909, near Welty Mill in Washington Township, Pa., he was the son of the late William R. and Susan M. Leisinger Crum.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Elsie E. Higgs Crum, in 1996.

He worked for his  Father, who owned Welty Mill. Later, he became a carpenter and worked at Hess Planing Mill on North Franklin Street, Waynesboro. He then worked for Cavetown Planing Mill, Cavetown. He was employed by Landis Tool Co. in Waynesboro for four years. He returned to Cavetown Planing Mill prior to retiring in 1976.

He was a member of Waynesboro Church of the Brethren and Fidelis Sunday School Class.

He was a member of National AARP.

He is survived by two sons, Merle R. Crum of Chambersburg and Donald E. Crum of Luray, Va.; one sister, Mary Landers of Waverly, Ohio; three grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one sister, Anna Ifert; and one brother, William Crum.

Graveside services will be Sunday at 1 p.m. at Green Hill Cemetery, Waynesboro. The Rev. John Paul Holsey will officiate.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Waynesboro Church of the Brethren, 117 S. Church St., Waynesboro, Pa. 17268.

Arrangements are by Grove Funeral Home, Waynesboro.
