John S. Wetzel
MERCERSBURG, Pa. - John S. Wetzel, 87, of 13732 Karper Road, died Tuesday, June 9, 1998, at Quincy United Methodist Home, Quincy, Pa.
Born Oct. 29, 1910, in Rouzerville, Pa., he was the son of the late Samuel D. and Bessie K. Weagley Wetzel.
He worked as a carpenter for the former Lanehart Construction Co., and for Rockwell Construction of Mercersburg. He was last employed by Mercersburg Academy as a grounds keeper.
He was a member of Clayton Memorial Church of God, Mercersburg.
He is survived by his wife, Alice L. Gearhart Wetzel, whom he married Feb. 21, 1942; three daughters, Faith E. Walck of Greencastle, Pa., Glenda J. Corbett of Louisville, Ky., and Elva Andrews of Six Flags, Calif.; six sons, Fred Wetzel of Lemasters, Pa., J. William Wetzel of California, Carl L. Wetzel of Mount Holly Springs, Pa., Richard B. Wetzel, Rodney D. Wetzel and Tracy J. Wetzel, all of Mercersburg; one brother, Kenneth Wetzel of Canton, Ohio; 19 grandchildren; and great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a daughter and three sisters.
Services will be Friday at 10:30 a.m. at Clayton Memorial Church of God, 6701 Charlestown Road, Mercersburg. The Rev. Kelly Shope and the Rev. Eleanor Verrico will officiate. Burial will be in Parklawns Memorial Gardens, Chambersburg, Pa.
The viewing will be Friday one hour prior to the service at the church.

Helen R. Rockwell
WAYNESBORO, Pa. - Helen R. Bouder Rockwell, 87, of 120 W. Third St.; and formerly of 234 W. Second St., died Tuesday, June 9, 1998, at Quincy United Methodist Home.
Born June 8, 1911, in Waynesboro, she was the daughter of the late Abraham D. and Katherine Weir Bouder.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Albert M. Rockwell, in 1962. They were married Dec. 19, 1942.
She was a 1929 graduate of Waynesboro High School, and attended Waynesboro Business College.
She was employed at several businesses, including Waynesboro Knitting Mill; A&P Store; and McCrory's Department Store, all of Waynesboro.
She was of the Protestant faith.
She is survived by a son, Gary V. Rockwell of Wellington, Fla.; and a sister, Arlene B. Keil of Waynesboro.
She was preceded in death by her stepmother, Ida M. Eberly Bouder; an infant sister, Laverne Bouder; two sisters, Ruth Jacobs and Mary Elizabeth Levan; and three brothers, Charles Bouder, Eugene Bouder and Robert Bouder.
Services will be Friday at 11 a.m. at Grove Funeral Home, 50 S. Broad St., Waynesboro. Pastor Roger K. Myers will officiate. Burial will be in Greenhill Cemetery.
The family will receive friends Friday one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
Donna J. Hulings
CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - Donna J. Hulings, 43, of 548 Bracken Drive, died Sunday, June 7, 1998, the result of a motorcycle accident in Milford, Pa.
Born May 10, 1955, in Woodbury, N.J., she was the daughter of Chip and Bunny Schweigart Chestnut of Thorofare, N.J.
She was a 1973 graduate of Gateway Regional High School; and a graduate of PNB Beauty School, both of Woodbury, N.J.
She was employed as a beautician by Franklin County Nursing Home.
She was a member of Presbyterian Church of Falling Spring, Pa.
She was a member of Martha Custis Chapter 342 Order of the Eastern Star; past president of Kensington Kadosh 54 Ladies Auxiliary, Jenkintown, Pa.; a life member of Harley-Davidson Owners Group; and public relations coordinator for the Keystone Chapter Alliance of Bikers Toward Education.
In addition to her parents, she is survived by her husband, W. Daniel Hulings; one stepdaughter, Danielle Hulings of Plymouth Meeting, Pa.; one sister, Linda Peterman of Nordmont, Pa.; three brothers, Victor Chestnut of Bucks County, Pa., Steven Chestnut of Woodbury Heights, N.J., and Michael Chestnut of Sewell, N.J.; one grandson; and nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, June 20, at 10:30 a.m., at Presbyterian Church of Falling Spring, 221 N. Main St. The Rev. William H. Harter and the Rev. Carrie McGlellan will officiate. Members of Martha Custis Chapter 342 O.E.S. will conduct a service in the church chapel at 10 a.m., prior to the service in the sanctuary.
Burial will be at the convenience of the family.
There will be no viewing.

Robert L. Singleton
CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - Robert L. Singleton, 60, of 540 E. Queen St., died Tuesday, June 9, 1998, at Chambersburg Hospital.
Born Jan. 21, 1938, in Philadelphia, he was the son of the late John L. and Hattie W. Templeton Singleton.
He was a 1955 graduate of Dowington (Pa.) High School. He completed his associate's degree in paralegal at Wilson College, Chambersburg, and Penn State.
He retired in 1993 after 34 years as manager of DES Comm at Letterkenny Army Depot, Chambersburg.
He was a member of St. James A.M.E. Church, Chambersburg.
He was past grand master of Letort Star Masonic Lodge 18 F&AM, Carlisle, Pa. He served with NAACP and CCIA, both of Chambersburg. He was commissioner of Chambersburg Housing Authority, and police commissioner of Chambersburg. He has been recognized for his work in the Equal Employment Opportunity programs in ceremonies at the Pentagon.
He is survived by his wife, Roberta Jennings Singleton; one daughter, Bernadette R. Singleton of Chambersburg; two sons, Wilmer R. Singleton and Kevin L. Singleton, both of Chambersburg; two sisters, Gloria Hathaway of New York and Beatrice Williams of Philadelphia; one brother, Wilmer Singleton of Philadelphia; and four grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Hattie Waddy; and four brothers, Tom Singleton, John Singleton, Henry Singleton and Elsie Singleton.
Services will be Saturday at 11:30 a.m. in the chapel of Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home, 333 Falling Spring Road, Chambersburg. The Rev. George N. Bell will officiate. Burial will be in Parklawns Memorial Gardens, Chambersburg.
The viewing will be Saturday from 10 to 11 a.m. prior to the service at the funeral home. Members of Letort Star Lodge 18 F&AM will conduct a masonic service Saturday at 11 a.m.
Pearl E. Carbaugh
MERCERSBURG, Pa. - Pearl E. Carbaugh, 81, formerly of 12249 Shimpstown Road, died Wednesday, June 10, 1998, at the home of her daughter, Faith E. Carbaugh, at 11780 Shimpstown Road.
Born Oct. 8, 1916, in Mercersburg, she was the daughter of the late Thomas O. and Amelia Mills Atherton.
She was preceded in death by her husband, J. Merle Carbaugh, in 1997.
As a young woman, she had been employed at the former Cannery Factory of Greencastle, Pa.
She attended Welsh Run Church of the Brethren and Maple Grove Church of God, both of Mercersburg.
In addition to her daughter, she is survived by three sons, John T. Carbaugh of Mercersburg, Amos J. Carbaugh of Greencastle and David H. Carbaugh of McConnellsburg, Pa.; one sister, Mabel Gilliam of New Mailport, Pa.; 12 grandchildren; four stepgrandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and four step-great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a son, a sister, a brother and a great-grandchild.
Services will be Sunday at 3 p.m. at Maple Grove Church of God, Punch Bowl Road, Mercersburg. The Rev. Norman C. Hege, the Rev. Sterling C. Keeney and the Rev. Robert E. Timmons will officiate. Burial will be in Pine Grove Cemetery, Mercersburg.
The viewing will be Saturday from 7 to 9 p.m. at Lininger-Fries Funeral Home, 47 N. Park Ave., Mercersburg; and Sunday one hour prior to the service at the church.
Josephine H. Kunkle
CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - Josephine H. Kunkle, 82, of 25 Sanibel Lane, and formerly of Carlton Heights in St. Thomas, Pa., died Thursday, June 11, 1998, at Shook Home of Chambersburg.
Born July 3, 1915, in Dutchtown, near Mercersburg, Pa., she was the daughter of the late James Alfred and Mary V. Barnes Spidle.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Paul H. Kunkle, in 1997. They were married Jan. 17, 1937.
She was a graduate of the former St. Thomas High School.
She was a homemaker. She had worked at Christian Light Bookstore in Chambersburg for 15 years.
She was a member of King Street United Brethren in Christ Church in Chambersburg, where she also was a member of Buds of Promise Sunday School Class.
She was a member of Carlton Heights Homemakers Group.
She is survived by four sons, James F. Kunkle of Valdosta, Ga., John S. Kunkle of Mont Alto, Pa., and P. Edmund Kunkle and Donald G. Kunkle, both of Chambersburg; eight grandchildren; and two great-grandsons.
She was preceded in death by a grandson, Douglas Kunkle; three sisters; and two brothers.
Services will be Saturday at 10:30 a.m. at Harold M. Zimmerman and Son Funeral Home, 45 S. Carlisle St., Greencastle. The Rev. Lester Stine will officiate. Burial will be in Cedar Hill Cemetery, Greencastle.
There will be no public viewing or visitation.
The family requests the omission of flowers.

Charles E. Lescalleet
STATE LINE, Pa. - Charles Edward "Chuck" Lescalleet, 61, of 568 Reid Road, died Thursday, June 11, 1998, at his home.
Born July 12, 1936, in Westminster, Md., he was the son of the late Lawrence and Tressa Hancock Lescalleet.
He was employed with Gorham Distribution, Williamsport; and previously with Hub Furniture, Landover, Md.; Corvettes, Glen Burnie, Md.; and Eyerly's, Hagerstown.
He attended Antrim Brethren in Christ, Greencastle, Pa.
He was a member of American Quarterhorse Association; Maryland Draft Horse and Mule Association; and a former member of Maryland Rodeo Club.
He is survived by his wife, Shirley Fritz Lescalleet; one daughter, Susanne Stevens, at home; two sons, Greg Lescalleet of State Line, and Barry Lescalleet of Jessup, Md.; two sisters, Shirley Ryan of Kentucky and Linda Ebersole of Hagerstown; six grandsons; nieces and nephews; and aunts and uncles.
Services will be Monday at 1 p.m. at Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd., Hagerstown. The Rev. Steve Munger will officiate. Burial will be in Pipe Creek Cemetery, New Windsor, Md.
The family will receive friends Sunday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.
Lillian E. Pittman
BIG COVE TANNERY, Pa. - Lillian E. Pittman, 96, of Big Cove Tannery, died Thursday, June 11, 1998, at Fulton County Medical Center, McConnellsburg, Pa.
Born July 17, 1901, in Kansas City, Kan., she was the daughter of the late Martin and Fanny Phillips Surber.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Harry E. Pittman Sr., in 1967.
In her early years, she was employed by Armour in Kansas City as a meat cutter.
She was of the Protestant faith.
She is survived by three daughters, Virginia Kinsley of Pensacola, Fla., JoAnne Thomas of Dunedin, Fla. and Juanita Harmison of Berkeley Springs, W.Va.; six sons, William M. Pittman of Needmore, Pa., Harry Earl Pittman Jr., Claude H. Pittman and Basil E. Pittman, all of Big Cove Tannery, Donald M. Pittman of Baltimore and Raymond R. Pittman of Berkeley Springs; one sister, Marie Duthoo of Kansas City; 21 grandchildren; four stepgrandchildren; and great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by an infant daughter; two sons, Howard K. Pittman and Richard L. Pittman; one grandson, Raymond Ralph Pittman; three sisters, Josie Garrett, Gracie Faulk and Elizabeth Surber; and one brother, Basil Surber.
Services will be Sunday at 2 p.m. at Damascus Christian Church, Big Cove Tannery. The Rev. Loy Garber will officiate. Burial will be in the adjoining Damascus Cemetery.
The family will receive friends Saturday from 7 to 9 p.m. at Grove Funeral Home, 141 W. Main St., Hancock; and Sunday one hour prior to the service at the church. The funeral home will be open Saturday from 2 to 9 p.m.
