Hilda I. Cordell
CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - Hilda I. Cordell, 79, of 711 Park Circle West, died Friday, May 29, 1998, at ManorCare Health Services, Chambersburg.
Born April 5, 1919, near Mercersburg, Pa., she was the daughter of the late John and Effie Mellott Burall, and the stepdaughter of the late David Burall.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Roy E. Cordell, in 1991. They were married Aug. 15, 1935.
She did seasonal work at Knouse Foods of Chambersburg.
She was a member of Harvest Time Ministries of Chambersburg.
She is survived by a granddaughter, Carmen E. Cordell of Keymar, Md., and nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by a son, the Rev. Paul C. Cordell, in 1995, and a brother.
Services will be Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Lininger-Fries Funeral Home, 47 N. Park Ave., Mercersburg. The Rev. Vaughn E. Kipe and the Rev. Duane L. Beck will officiate. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery, Mercersburg.
The viewing will be today from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Corinne W. Snyder
WAYNESBORO, Pa. - Corinne W. Snyder, of 600 A South Potomac St., died Saturday, May 30, 1998, at Milton Hershey Medical Center, Hershey, Pa., of a heart attack.
Born in Hellam, Pa., she was the daughter of the late George H. and Laura Wanbaugh Walter.
She was a 1936 graduate of Greencastle High School. She was a 1937 graduate of Thompson Business College, York, Pa.
She worked for Gem Garment Co., Greencastle, Pa., for six years, and for a time in York, Pa., Washington, D.C., and Chicago.
She also was a homemaker.
She was a life member of Trinity United Catholic Church in Greencastle and Waynesboro.
She is survived by her husband, Glen M. Snyder, whom she married Nov. 13, 1942; a daughter, Rhonda Morey of Waynesboro; a brother, Robert H. Walter of Roanoke, Va.; and two granddaughters.
Services will be Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Snyder-Lochstampfor Funeral Home, Inc., corner of South Church and West Second streets, Waynesboro. Burial will be in Green Hill Cemetery, Waynesboro.
The family will receive friends Tuesday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.
David W. Shives
HARRISONVILLE, Pa. - David Wallace Shives, 82, of Harrisonville, died Saturday, May 30, 1998, at Fulton County Medical Center, McConnellsburg, Pa.
Born Aug. 14, 1915, in Gem, Pa., he was the son of the late Abner Shives and Margaret Ellen "Helen" Clugston Shives.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Helen Miller Shives.
He was an equipment operator at Letterkenny Army Depot, retiring in 1972.
He was a member of Asbury United Methodist Church, Harrisonville.
He was Licking Creek Township tax collector for six years and supervisor for four years.
He served with the U.S. Army during World War II.
He is survived by his wife, Alma Decker Shives, whom he married July 6, 1970; three daughters, Angela Elliott of Chambersburg, Pa., Shawnee DeShong and Amy Bolinger, both of Harrisonville; one son, David W. Shives Jr. of Martinsburg, W.Va.; two stepchildren, Richard A. Miller of McConnellsburg and Sandra Bishop of St. Thomas, Pa.; one sister, Margaret Sowers of McConnellsburg; one brother, A. Reed "Pete" Shives of Big Cove Tannery, Pa.; one granddaughter; two grandsons; stepgrandchildren; stepgreat-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by one sister and two brothers.
Services will be Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Howard L. Sipes Funeral Home, Harrisonville. The Rev. Donald Bard will officiate. Burial will be in Asbury United Methodist Cemetery, Harrisonville. Military graveside service will be conducted by Fulton Honor Guard, McConnellsburg.
Visitation will be today from 2 to 9 p.m. at Sipes Funeral Home, Harrisonville.
Ethel E. Deibert
CARLISLE, Pa. - Ethel E. Deibert, 84, of 1 N. Pitt St., and formerly of St. Thomas Township, Pa., died Saturday, May 30, 1998, at Carlisle Hospital.
Born Sept. 17, 1913, in Scotland, Pa., she was the daughter of the late Charles W. and Stella E. Horne Reath.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Nelson E. Deibert, in 1983.
She was a homemaker.
She is survived by one daughter, Marie Nickalson of Chambersburg, Pa.; two sons, Harold L. Deibert and Edward E. Deibert, both of Carlisle; seven sisters, Nellie V. Brookens of Sabastian, Fla., Alma V. Collins, Clara B. Swisher and Helen R. Robinson, all of Chambersburg, Velva B. Bollinger and Edna J. Mooney, both of Greenvillage, Pa., and Ida A. Shaffer of Scotland, Pa.; one brother, Clarence A. Reath of Fayetteville, Pa.; two grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by two sisters; and one brother.
Services will be Tuesday at 10 a.m. in the chapel of Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home, 333 Falling Spring Road, Chambersburg. Pastor Eric J. Shafer will officiate. Burial will be in Mount Pleasant Cemetery, Chambersburg.
The viewing will be Tuesday from 9:30 to 10 a.m. prior to the services at the funeral home.
LaVerne L. Dymond Sr.
FAYETTEVILLE, Pa. - LaVerne L. Dymond Sr., 91, of 12 Dymond Ave., died Friday, May 29, 1998, at his home.
Born March 3, 1907, in Moosic, Pa., he was the son of the late John B. and Mary Schoonover Dymond.
In 1940, he began sawmilling on Metz property in Stoufferstown and designed and built an automatic log loader. He later owned and operated a lumber yard, where he sold building supplies.
He operated a pallet mill in Fayetteville for 18 years before it was destroyed by fire in 1980. At that time, he retired and became active at Fayetteville Antique Mall in buying and selling antique furniture, cut glass and Roseville pottery.
He was a member of Calvary United Methodist Church, Fayetteville, where he served as a former Sunday School teacher, lay leader to the conference committee and board member.
A member of Chambersburg Rotary Club, he was the first president of Chambersburg Area Council of Churches. He served as general chairman of the United Way Campaign in 1962, and in 1964 ran for state representative. He also was active in Boy Scout Troop 133 and was a member of the executive board from 1956 to 1988.
He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Mabel Harrison Dymond; two sons, LaVerne L. Dymond Jr. of Fayetteville and John B. Dymond of Shippensburg, Pa.; two daughters, Sue Zacharias of Lexington, Md., and Jane Truitt of Packwood, Wash.; 10 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
Services will be Tuesday at 10:30 a.m. at Calvary United Methodist Church. The Rev. Richard B. Cartwright will officiate. Burial will be in Maplewood Cemetery, Marion, Pa.
Visitation will be today from 6 to 8 p.m. at Robert G. Sellers Funeral Home, 297 Philadelphia Ave., Chambersburg, Pa.; and Tuesday one hour prior to the services at the church.

Victoria V. Whittaker
PRESCOTT, Ariz. - Victoria Virginia Clayton Whittaker, 92, of Prescott, and formerly of Quincy Village, Quincy, Pa., died Monday, May 25, 1998, at Mountainview Manor Nursing Home, Prescott.
Born Dec. 7, 1905, in Waynesboro, Pa., she was the daughter of the late Charles Brotherton and Myrtle Elizabeth Beamer Clayton.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Brig. Gen. Howard R. Whittaker, in 1994. They were married in April 1931.
She attended Waynesboro Schools and graduated from Bishop Thorpe Manor in Bethlehem, Pa.
She was a member of Letterkenny Officers Wives Club, Chambersburg, Pa.; Waynesboro Hospital Auxiliary; BPO Elks Lodge 731 Ladies Auxiliary; Waynesboro Country Club; Army Distaff Association; and National AARP.
She is survived by one son, Maj. Gen. Howard Clayton Whittaker of Prescott; three grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by two sisters, Gladys Creager and Camelia Brooks.
Graveside services will be Wednesday at 10 a.m. at Burns Hill Cemetery, Waynesboro. The Rev. C. Albert Guyer will officiate.

Lily E. Stouffer
QUINCY, Pa. - Lily E. Forsyth Stouffer, 88, a resident of Quincy United Methodist Home; and formerly of 45 E. Second St., Waynesboro, Pa., died Monday, June 1, 1998, at the home.
Born Feb. 8, 1910, in Hagerstown, she was the daughter of the late John A. and Olie Taylor Forsyth.
She was a 1928 graduate of Hagerstown High School.
She was employed in the office of Forsyth Storage Co., Hagerstown. Later, she worked with her husband in their lawn mower and auto parts business. They also operated Custard Cream Bar on Main Street in Waynesboro.
She was a member of Waynesboro Gospel Chapel.
She is survived by her husband of 67 years, Paul H. Stouffer, whom she married June 1, 1931; one brother, John Forsyth of Hagerstown; and nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by three sisters and three brothers.
Services will be Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Grove Funeral Home, 50 S. Broad St., Waynesboro. Burial will be in Green Hill Cemetery, Waynesboro.
The family will receive friends Wednesday one hour prior to the services at the funeral home.

John E. Kennedy
SOUTH MOUNTAIN, Pa. - John E. Kennedy, 72, a resident of Michaux Manor Living Center, and formerly of 2938 Sollers Point Road, Dundalk, Md., died Sunday, May 31, 1998, at ManorCare Nursing Home, Chambersburg, Pa.
Born May 31, 1926, in Baltimore, he was the son of the late Marie Affroux Schmid.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Alilee Ward Kennedy, in 1980.
He retired from Bethlehem Steel in Baltimore after 45 years.
A U.S. Navy veteran he served in the Pacific Theater during World War II.
He was a life member of Veterans of Foreign Wars, Dundalk.
He is survived by one daughter, Colleen Kennedy Rettig of Waynesboro, Pa.; one son, James W. Kennedy of Baltimore; and three grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a brother, James Kennedy.
The family will receive friends Wednesday from 3 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at Connelly Funeral Home, 7110 Sollers Point Road, Dundalk. A prayer service will be held at 8 p.m.
