Gilson L. Wagaman

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - Gilson L. Wagaman, 86, of 3015 Anthony Highway, died Friday, May 8, 1998, at Chambersburg Hospital.

Born Dec. 20, 1911, in Pond Bank, Pa., he was the son of the late Ross E. and Beulah May Dailey Wagaman.

He was a 1931 graduate of Chambersburg High School.

He retired in 1976 from the shipping department of Frick Co., Waynesboro, Pa., where he worked for 40 years. He and his wife also operated Rock's Grocery Store in Pond Bank for five years.

He was a member of Greenwood Assembly of God Church in Fayetteville, Pa., where he taught Sunday School. He also served as Sunday School superintendent and served on various other committees of the church.

He was a member of National AARP and Norland Chapter AARP, Chambersburg. He was serving as treasurer of Pond Bank Improvement Association.

He is survived by his wife of more than 57 years, Emma K. Rock Wagaman; one daughter, Sharon K. Sheffler of Mercersburg, Pa.; one granddaughter, Anastasia C. Sheffler of Mercersburg; and two nieces.

He was preceded in death by one brother, Renis Wagaman.

Services will be Tuesday at 2 p.m. at Greenwood Assembly of God Church, 150 Anthony Highway, Fayetteville. The Rev. Douglas W. Baldwin and the Rev. LeRoy Wiley will officiate. Burial will be in Mount Zion Cemetery near Quincy, Pa.

The family will receive friends today from 7 to 9 p.m. at Grove Funeral Home, 50 S. Broad St., Waynesboro.

Charles R. Baker

GREENCASTLE, Pa. - Charles Russell Baker, 82, of 26 E. Baltimore St., died Sunday, May 10, 1998, at Washington County Hospital, Hagerstown.

Born April 4, 1916, in Hagerstown, he was the son of the late Samuel Evers and Florence Elizabeth Fisher Baker.

He retired in 1975 from Marquette Cement Co. He was previously employed with Supreme Block Co. He also drove a bus for Heritage Academy and Broadfording Christian Academy.

He was a member of Maugansville Bible Brethren Church.

He was a member of the CCC camp.

He is survived by his wife, Peggy L. Young Baker; five  daughters, Mary Barnhart, Mildred Kick, Charlene Norris and Paula Baker, all of Hagerstown, and Ginger Frey of Smithsburg; six stepdaughters, Mary Ann Collins, Ginger Carmack, Kathy Musser, Pamala Thomas and Angela Roberts, all of Chambersburg, Pa., and Carol Oaks of Iowa; one stepson, John Runyon Jr. of Chambersburg; two sisters, Edith Trovinger of Hagerstown and Ada Demczak of Essex, Md.; four brothers, Edward Baker of Sebastian, Fla., Allen Baker, George Baker and Samuel Baker, all of Hagerstown; 22 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one brother, Kenneth Baker, and two grandchildren.

Services will be Wednesday at 1 p.m. at Maugansville Bible Brethren Church, 200 Binkley Ave., Maugansville. The Rev. John C. Hoffman will officiate. Burial will be in Cedar Lawn Memorial Park.

The family will receive friends Tuesday from 7 to 9 p.m. at Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd., Hagerstown.

Adene B. Freeman

WAYNESBORO, Pa. - Adene B. Zimmerman Freeman, 69, of 11512 Orchard Road, died Friday, May 8, 1998, at Washington County Hospital, Hagerstown.

Born Aug. 21, 1928, in Waynesboro, she was the daughter of the late H. Nelson and Jeannette Miller Zimmerman.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Ernest M. Freeman, in 1982.

She had been a tour guide and agent for Triple A's of Waynesboro and Wolf's Bus Lines, York Springs, Pa., retiring in 1994. Before that she had worked as a secretary at Fairchild Aircraft Manufacturing, Hagerstown, and Wayne Junk Co., Waynesboro, then as secretary and bookkeeper at Hamer's Garage. Following her retirement, she worked part-time at Eckerd Drugs, Waynesboro.

She was a member of Evangelical Lutheran Church, Waynesboro.

She was a member of Fraternal Order of Eagles Ladies Auxiliary and BPOE Lodge 731 Ladies Auxiliary, both of Waynesboro. She enjoyed bingo, traveling and needlework.

She is survived by two  daughters, Bonnie Lu Freeman and Pamela Sue Bumbaugh, both of Waynesboro; three sons, Thomas E. Buffington of California, and James E. Buffington and Nelson P. Buffington, both of Waynesboro; three sisters, Helen Rager of Waynesboro, Maxine Marski of Baltimore and Joyce Ann Higgins of Hagerstown; eight grandchildren; one great-grandson; and nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by one brother, H. Walter "Pete" Zimmerman, in 1980.

Services will be Tuesday at 1:30 p.m. at Grove Funeral Home, 50 S. Broad St., Waynesboro. The Rev. Richard A. Seaks will officiate. Burial will be in Green Hill Cemetery, Waynesboro.

The family will receive friends today from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Robert L. Shives Sr.

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - Robert L. Shives Sr., 72, of 110 Brookview Ave., died of complications from multiple myeloma on Monday, May 11, 1998, at Chambersburg Hospital.

Born Nov. 5, 1925, in Hagerstown, he was the son of the late Jerry W. and Vivian Hoffman Shives Sr.

He retired in 1980 from Letterkenny Army Depot after 34 years.

A U.S. Army veteran, he served with the 1308th Engineers during World War II in the European and Pacific theaters.

He was a member of Carrick United Methodist Church, Fort Loudon, Pa., where he was a trustee for many years. He was an associate member of First United Methodist Church, Chambersburg.

He was a member of Harry Lackove Post 517, American Legion, Mercersburg, Pa.; George Washington Lodge 143, F&AM, Chambersburg; National Association of Retired Federal Employees; and Friendship Fire Co., Chambersburg. He was a lifetime member of National Rifle Association and North American Hunting Club.

A federally licensed gunsmith for more than 40 years, he did specialized work for firearms displays at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C.

He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Jeanne M. Jones Shives; one son, Robert L. Shives Jr. of Chambersburg; two brothers, Jerry W. Shives Jr. of Waynesboro, Pa., and Walter E. Shives of Greencastle, Pa.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Isabel Shuman.

Services will be Thursday at 1 p.m. in the chapel of Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home, 333 Falling Spring Road, Chambersburg. The Rev. Donald C. Nolder and the Rev. Karl R. Herman will officiate. Burial will be in Parklawns Memorial Gardens, Chambersburg. Military graveside services will be conducted by Charles M. Nitterhouse Post 1599, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Chambersburg.

A viewing will be held Wednesday from 7 to 9 p.m. and Thursday one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. George Washington Lodge 143 F&AM will conduct Masonic services Wednesday at 8 p.m.

Memorial donations may be made to American Cancer Society, Franklin County Unit, 452 E. King St., Chambersburg, Pa. 17201; or to First United Methodist Church, 225 S. Second St., Chambersburg, Pa. 17201; or to Carrick United Methodist Church, in care of Shirley Jones, 17233 Old Stumpy Lane, Fort Loudon, Pa. 17224.

Katherine S. Shinham

GREENCASTLE, Pa. - Katherine S. Shinham, 96, of 235 S. Ridge Ave., died Sunday, May 10, 1998, at Waynesboro (Pa.) Hospital.

Born Oct. 19, 1901, in Pittsburgh, she was the daughter of the late William P. and Bessie Eaton Stouffer.

She was preceded in death by her husband, J. Elmer Shinham, in 1986.

She was a 1918 graduate of Greencastle High School and a graduate of Shippensburg (Pa.) Normal School.

A retired school teacher, she taught in Greencastle area schools including Bushtown, State Line and Zullinger, and in the Washington Township, Pa., area.

She was a member of Greencastle Presbyterian Church and taught Sunday School. She taught English to Vietnamese immigrants sponsored by the church.

She was a charter and life member of Greencastle-Antrim Lioness Club; a charter member of Greencastle-Antrim Senior Women's Club and Women's Auxiliary of Greencastle Sportsman's Club; a member of Greencastle-Antrim Loyal  daughters and Friends of the Library; and a past president of the former Greencastle Circulating Library. She had received citations for her work on roadside beautification projects and selling war bonds.

She is survived by one daughter, Frances S. "Betty" Kerchner of Greencastle; one son John W. "Bill" Shinham of Greencastle; three grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandson; and nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by one sister, Frances Shreiner; and three brothers, Robert Stouffer, Harry Stouffer and Earl Stouffer.

Services will be Thursday at 11 a.m. at Harold M. Zimmerman and Son Funeral Home, 45 S. Carlisle St., Greencastle. The Rev. Rawley Boone will officiate. Burial will be in Cedar Hill Cemetery, Greencastle.

The family will receive friends Wednesday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Ora G. McClure

QUINCY, Pa. - Ora G. McClure, 89, of Quincy United Methodist Home, and formerly of Vine Street, Chambersburg, died Sunday, May 10, 1998, at the home.

Born Oct. 27, 19 08 in Shady Grove, Pa., she was the daughter of the late Roy C. and Grace Crider Stouffer.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Harold J. McClure, in 1969.

She operated a laundry service from her home on Vine Street for 40 years.

She was a member of Park Avenue United Methodist Church, was a volunteer in social activities and was a former Sunday school teacher.

She was a member of the Golden Age Club and Senior Citizens Club.

She is survived by one daughter, Janet Lautenslager of Chambersburg; six sons, Paul B. McClure of Richland, N.C., James L. McClure of Dalmatia, Pa., and John C. McClure, Thomas R. McClure, Jay "Daniel" McClure and William A. McClure, all of Chambersburg; 24 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; 19 great-great-grandchildren; five stepgrandchildren; 11 stepgreat-grandchildren; and two stepgreat-great-grandchildren.

Services will be Thursday at 2 p.m. at Park Avenue United Methodist Church, 125 Park Ave., Chambersburg. The Rev. Frank O. Monroe will officiate. Burial will be in Lincoln Cemetery.

Visitation will be Wednesday from 7 to 9 p.m. at Robert G. Sellers Funeral Home, 297 Philadelphia Ave., Chambersburg, and Thursday one hour prior to the service at the church.

Memorial donations may be made to Quincy United Methodist Home, 6956 Orphanage Road, Quincy, Pa. 17247.

James W. Ehrhart

ORRSTOWN, Pa. - James W. Ehrhart, 67, of 10623 Newburg Road, died Saturday, May 9, 1998, at his home.

Born March 26, 1931, in St. Thomas, Pa., he was the son of the late George L. and Vallie M. Snurr Ehrhart.

He was retired from Letterkenny Army Depot, Chambersburg, Pa.

A U.S. Army veteran, he served during the Korean War.

He attended the Church of God, Orrstown.

He is survived by his wife, Mary C. Myers Ehrhart, two  daughters, Carol M. Eckenrode of Orrstown and Sylvia R. Hykes of Chambersburg; three sons, Eric R. Ehrhart of St. Thomas, and Quintin J. Ehrhart and Chris S. Ehrhart, both of Orrstown; five sisters, Mary Helen Burkholder of Waynesboro, Pa., Ella Graham of Mercersburg, Pa., Bernidena Etter of Nyesville, Pa., V. Evelyn Wingert of Chambersburg and Marcina Wright of Upper Strasburg; four brothers, Grayson A. Ehrhart of Chambersburg, Robert O. Ehrhart of Orrstown, George C.W. Ehrhart and Dana O. Ehrhart, both of Upper Strasburg; 10 grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; and nieces and nephews.

Services will be Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Fogelsanger-Bricker Funeral Home, 112 W. King St., Shippensburg, Pa. Charles E. Beltz will officiate. Burial will be in Parklawns Memorial Gardens, Greene Township, Pa.

Viewing will be Wednesday one hour prior to services at the funeral home.

Gladys E. Carbaugh

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - Gladys E. Carbaugh, 77, of 278 W. Burkhart Ave., died Sunday, May 10, 1998, at Johns Hopkins Hospital, Baltimore.

Born Jan. 31, 1921, in Greene Township, Pa., she was the daughter of the late Edward G. Jones and Mary C. Carbaugh McGinty.

She worked as a housekeeper at Howard Johnson in Chambersburg, retiring in 1968. She previously worked for the former J. Schoeneman Co.

She was of the Protestant faith.

She was a member of AARP.

She is survived by one daughter, Mary E. Carbaugh of Chambersburg; three sons, Richard A. Carbaugh of Fayetteville, Pa.; and Harry E. Carbaugh and Terence W. Carbaugh, both of Chambersburg; seven grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her stepfather, Stewart McGinty.

Services will be Wednesday at 1 p.m. in the chapel of Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home, 333 Falling Spring Road, Chambersburg. The Rev. Paul B. Baker will officiate. Burial will be in Lincoln Cemetery, Chambersburg.

The family will receive friends today from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home and Wednesday one hour prior to service.
