Zelda P. Ramsey

HUSTONTOWN, Pa. - Zelda Pearl Ramsey, 87, of Hustontown, died Thursday, April 2, 1998, at Fulton County Medical Center, McConnellsburg, Pa.

Born Feb. 14, 1911, in Springfield Township, Pa., she was the daughter of the late Porter and Mary E. Madden Wible.

She was a homemaker.

She was a member of Hustontown Church of God, Hustontown.

She is survived by her husband, Daniel Ramsey, whom she married March 23, 1929; children Betty R. Amsley of Mercersburg, Pa., Stella McCleary of Chambersburg, Pa., Margaret J. Reeder of McConnellsburg, Pa., Thelma Mellott of Needmore, Pa., Reuben Ramsey and Melvin Ramsey, both of Hustontown, Darlene Ramsey of Breezewood, Pa., and Judy Kagarise of Loysburg, Pa.; one sister, Anna Mary Smith of New Cumberland, Pa.; 21 grandchildren; three stepgrandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; stepgreat-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by one son, Donald Ramsey; one daughter, Miriam Kelly; two brothers, Richard Wible and Lloyd Wible; three sisters, Cecillian Kerlin, Fannie Long and Belle Cutchall; and four grandchildren.

Service will be Sunday at 2 p.m. at Hustontown Church of God, Hustontown. The Rev. John Warner will officiate. Burial will be in Hustontown Cemetery, Hustontown.

The viewing will be Saturday from 2 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home. The family will receive friends from 4 to 9 p.m. Visitation also will be Sunday one hour prior to the service at the church.

Arrangements are by M. R. Brown Funeral Home, Hustontown.

Mary E. Cordell

WAYNESBORO, Pa. - Mary E. Geesaman Cordell, 90, of 614 Park St., died Friday, April 3, 1998, at Waynesboro Hospital.

Born June 7, 1907, in Rouzerville, Pa., she was the daughter of the late Chauncy and Blanche Slaysman Geesaman.

She attended Washington Township, Pa., schools.

She was employed for more than 30 years as a head cashier and later manager for Acme Supermarkets in Waynesboro. She retired in 1968.

She was a member of Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church, Rouzerville, where she was a member of Augsburg Sunday School Class.

She is survived by her husband, Chalmers M. Cordell, whom she married Jan. 25, 1928; a daughter, Marilyn C. Dewease of Waynesboro; four grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; two sisters, Mildred Bricker of Romney, W.Va. and Emma Eberly of Rouzerville, Pa.; and a brother, James Geesaman of Kissimmee, Fla.

She was preceded in death by two sisters, Ella Overcash and Irene Hartman.

Graveside services will be Monday at 3:15 p.m. at Harbaugh Church Cemetery, Rouzerville. The Rev. David L. Hefner will officiate.

The family will receive friends Monday from 2 to 3 p.m. at Grove Funeral Home, 50 S. Broad St., Waynesboro.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church Choir, 12043 Old Route 16, Rouzerville, Pa. 17250.

Mildred N. Peiffer

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. -Mildred Naomi Miller Peiffer, 84, of 322 Cornertown Road, died Thursday, April 2, 1998, at home.

Born Oct. 31, 1913, in Chambersburg, she was the daughter of the late Harvey and Flora Barklow Miller.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Kenneth L. Peiffer Sr., in 1989.

She was a member of King Street United Brethren Church, Chambersburg, and the Mustard Seed Sunday School Class.

She is survived by two  daughters, Betty J. Bowman and Shirley L. Kennedy, both of Chambersburg; two sons, Donald G. Peiffer Sr. and Kenneth L. Peiffer Jr., both of Chambersburg; a brother, Samuel D. Miller of Sullivan, Mo.; seven grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.

Memorial services will be Monday at 10 a.m. at King Street United Brethren Church, 162 E. King St., Chambersburg. The Rev. Lester E. Stine will officiate.

Family will greet friends after services at the church.

Burial will be at the convenience of the family at Parklawn Memorial Gardens, Chambersburg.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Hospice of the Good Shepherd, 2700 Luther Drive, Chambersburg, Pa. 17201.

Arrangements are by Cumberland Valley Crematorium, Waynesboro, Pa.

Ross F. Filer Sr.

BALLY, Pa. - Ross Frank Filer Sr., 67, of 216 Main St., died Thursday, April 2, 1998, at his home.

Born Feb. 14, 1931, in Chambersburg, Pa., he was the son of the late Frank L. and Clara Mae Hornbaker Filer.

He was a veteran of the Korean War, serving with the U.S. Army. He received honors and combat medals.

He retired from Great American Knitting Mills, Bally.

He attended Hereford Mennonite Church, Bally.

He was a member of the Pennsylvania State Chapter of the American Legion.

He is survived by his wife of 12 years, Sara Jane Bricker Filer; two  daughters, Barbara Cunnius of Boyertown, Pa., and Brenda McCulley of Phoenix; two sons, Ross Filer Jr. of Bally and Frank Filer of Fannettsburg, Pa.; two sisters, Erma Mackey and Mary McLucas, both of Chambersburg; eight grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Kenneth Filer and Ray Filer.

Services will be Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Harold M. Zimmerman and Son Funeral Home, 45 S. Carlisle St., Greencastle, Pa. Pastor Robert W. Gerhart will officiate. Burial will be in Welsh Run Church of the Brethren Cemetery, Welsh Run, Pa., with graveside military honors provided by Chambersburg VFW Post 1599 Honor Guard of Chambersburg.

The family will receive friends Tuesday one hour prior to services at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Hereford Mennonite Church, 121 Barto Road, P.O. Box 97, Bally, Pa. 19503.

Bertha M. Snyder

WAYNESBORO, Pa. - Bertha M. Cook Snyder, 91, formerly of 115 S. Church St., died Thursday, April 2, 1998, at Franklin County Nursing Home, Chambersburg, Pa.

Born Feb. 13, 1907, in Greencastle, Pa., she was the daughter of the late Kenny A. and Hettie Stumbaugh Cook.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Lloyd Snyder, in 1970. They were married Oct. 7, 1933.

She was a homemaker. She had been employed with a clothing manufacturer in Glen Rock, Pa.

She is survived by nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by three sisters and nine brothers.

Services will be Monday at 11 a.m. at Grove Funeral Home, 50 S. Broad St., Waynesboro. The Rev. John F. Huff will officiate. Burial will be in Shank's Church Cemetery, Greencastle.

The family will receive friends Monday one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Franklin County Nursing Home, 201 Franklin Farm Lane, Chambersburg, Pa. 17201.

Helen E. Jeffrey

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - Helen E. Jeffrey, 88, of Shook Home, and formerly of Red Bank, N.J., died Saturday, April 4, 1998, at the home.

Born Oct. 7, 1909, in Waynesboro, Pa., she was the daughter of the late Wade and Elva M. Stull Dougal.

Her husband, William H. Jeffrey, died in 1991.

She was employed by Steinbach Department Store in Red Bank, retiring in 1988 after more than 50 years.

She was a former member of First United Methodist Church in Chambersburg.

She was a member of the local AARP.

She is survived by one niece, Delores Gaughenbaugh of Chambersburg; and two nephews, Gary Dougal of Chambersburg, and Reginald Dougal of Columbia, Md.

Graveside services will be held Monday at 11:30 a.m. at Lincoln Cemetery, 990 Lincoln Way East, Chambersburg. The Rev. Paul R. Baker will officiate.

There will be no viewing.

The family requests the omission of flowers. Memorial donations may be made to Shook Home, 55 S. Second St., Chambersburg, Pa. 17201.

Arrangements are by Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home, 333 Falling Spring Road, Chambersburg.

Lt. Col. Forest C. Shoup

SARASOTA, Fla. - Lt. Col. Forest Curtis Shoup, 75, of 4708 Hidden River Road, and of Mercersburg, Pa., died Sunday, March 15, 1998, at Doctors Hospital of Sarasota.

Born Dec. 13, 1922, in New York City, N.Y., he was the son of the late Rev. William F. and Mildred King Shoup.

He was a U.S. Army Air Corps veteran of World War II, flying B-24 bombers out of Italy in the European Theater of Operations. He participated in the Ploesti Raid in Romania and received the Distinguished Flying Cross and the Air Medal, among other military honors.

In 1948, he participated in the Berlin Airlift and flew active duty during the Korean Conflict. He also joined the D.C. and Delaware National Guards and flew missions in Vietnam. He rose to the rank of lieutenant colonel before retiring from military service.

After leaving active military duty, he was hired by Capital Airlines, which merged with United Airlines. In 1982, he retired as a 747 captain from United Airlines after 32 years of service as an airline pilot.

He was of the Baptist faith.

He was past president of Chambersburg (Pa.) Saddle Club, a former member of Mercersburg American Legion, and a member of Sarasota American Legion, and the Masonic Lodge of Georgia.

He is survived by his wife, Amelia Ann Smith Shoup; three  daughters, Carlee Davies of Frederick, Md., Nancy Brown of Greencastle, Pa., and Elizabeth O'Connell of Hagerstown; two sisters, Lorraine Smith of Pinellas Park, Fla., and Edith Marsden of Mexico, N.Y.; one brother, Robert Shoup of Inwood, W.Va.; six grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one brother, William K. Shoup.

Services will be held Friday at 11 a.m. at Harold M. Zimmerman and Son Funeral Home, 45 S. Carlisle St., Greencastle. Pastor Glen Miller will officiate. Burial will full military honors will be held Friday at 3 p.m. in Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, Va., with the Rev. Wayne Powers officiating.

There will be no viewing. However, the family will receive friends at the funeral home Thursday from 7 to 9 p.m.

Memorial donations may be made to the Awana Program of Calvary Bible Church, 3845 Buchanan Trail West, Greencastle, Pa. 17225.

Alice M. Linn

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - Alice Mae Linn, 86, a resident of Shook Home in Chambersburg, formerly of Chambersburg and Erie, Pa., died Monday, April 6, 1998, at the home.

Born Jan. 28, 1912, in Peters Township, Franklin County, Pa., she was the daughter of the late Jasper S. Sr. and Charlotte L. Berklite Stouffer.

Her husband, Russell Linn, died in 1970.

She was employed in the cafeteria of Penn State Behrend Campus in Erie, Pa.

She was a member of First United Methodist Church in Marion, Pa.

She is survived by three sisters, Mabel Baker of Marion, Ruth Burkholder of Chambersburg and Verda Lehman of Shippensburg, Pa.; and two brothers, Raymond L. Stouffer and Jasper S. Stouffer Jr., both of Chambersburg.

She was preceded in death by two sisters and two brothers.

Services will be held Wednesday at 8 p.m. in the chapel of Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home, 333 Falling Spring Road, Chambersburg. The Rev. Guy W. Camp III will officiate. Burial will be in Lakeside Memorial Park, Erie.

A viewing will be held at the funeral home Wednesday from 7 to 8 p.m.

Memorial donations may be made to the elevator fund of First United Methodist Church, 94 Colorado St., Marion, Pa. 17235.
