Mabel P. Chilcote
WAYNESBORO, Pa. - Mabel P. Chilcote, 92, of Franklin County Nursing Home; and formerly of Waynesboro, died Friday, March 27, 1998, at Franklin County Nursing Home.
Born Jan. 3, 1906, in Orbasonia, Pa., she was the daughter of the late Benjamin and Bertha Jacka Shingler.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Herman Chilcote.
She attended Orbasonia schools.
She was a member of Otterbein Brethren in Christ Church, Waynesboro.
She is survived by two sons, Richard Chilcote of Greencastle, Pa., and Max Chilcote of Waynesboro; 14 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
She was preceded in death by a son, Richard Chilcote, in 1996; three sisters; and two brothers.
Services will be held Tuesday, March 31, at 10:30 a.m. at Snyder-Lochstampfor Funeral Home, Inc., corners of S. Church and W. Second streets, Waynesboro. The Rev. Roger K. Myers will officiate. Burial will be in Parklawns Memorial Park Cemetery, Chambersburg, Pa.
The family will receive friends Tuesday one hour prior to the services at the funeral home.

Roy E. Miller
GREENCASTLE, Pa. - Roy Eugene "Gene" Miller, 56, of 3511 Buchanan Trail West, died Saturday, March 28, 1998, at his home.
Born July 20, 1941, in Claylick (Mercersburg), Pa., he was the son of Josephine Kachik Miller of Mercersburg and the late Roy L. Miller. He lived his early life in Mercersburg.
He was a 1960 graduate of James Buchanan High School, Mercersburg.
He was first employed by Frick Co., Waynesboro, Pa., from 1965 to 1968. He then worked as a parts distributor for General Motors in Martinsburg, W.Va., from 1968 until retiring in 1994 after 26 years of service.
He was a member of Otterbein United Brethren Church, Greencastle.
He was a guitarist for several musical groups in the area.
In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife, Gladys Virginia Forney Miller, whom he married on Nov. 16, 1963; one daughter, Tracey A. Kendle of Greencastle; seven sisters, Elizabeth J. Ward of Dayton, Ohio, Patricia A. Shaffer, Rose M. Deshong and Michelle L. Hopkins, all of Mercersburg, Mary Ann Mitchell of Atlanta, and Linda K. Newman and Carla J. Elbel, both of Chambersburg, Pa.; two brothers, Richard A. Miller of Chambersburg and George E. Miller of Mercersburg; three grandchildren; nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by one brother, Thomas Miller.
Services will be Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. at Otterbein United Brethren Church, 146 Leitersburg St., Greencastle. The Rev. David G. Rawley will officiate. Burial will be in Cedar Hill Cemetery, Greencastle.
The family will receive friends at Miller-Grove Funeral Home, 521 S. Washington St., Greencastle, Tuesday from 7 to 9 p.m. and Wednesday at the church one hour prior to the service.

Samuel M. Livengood
WAYNESBORO, Pa. - Dr. Samuel Miller Livengood, 80, of 11769 Woodlea Drive, died Saturday, March 28, 1998, at his home.
Born Nov. 1, 1917, in Salisbury, Pa., he was the son of the late Daniel W. and Mabel Miller Livengood. He lived his early life in Salisbury.
He was a 1934 graduate of Salisbury-Elklick High School and a 1938 graduate of Juniata College, Huntingdon, Pa. He earned doctorates in organic chemistry and biochemistry from Rutgers University in 1943.
He was employed as a research chemist by Union Carbide Corp. for 41 years. He joined the company in 1943 at the Mellon Institute, where as fellow and senior fellow, he specialized in oil additives and the chemistry and applications of polyalkylene glycols. Over the years, he was active in teaching and training personnel in the United States and abroad. He was a member of the research team that developed aircraft deicing fluid. He testified as an expert at Senate hearings on airline disasters. He retired in 1984.
He was an active member of his church throughout his life. He served as a deacon at Wilkinsburg Baptist Church, Wilkinsburg, Pa. He served as trustee and elder at First Presbyterian Church of Ossining, N.Y. Since moving to Waynesboro, he had been a member of Waynesboro Presbyterian Church.
He is survived by his wife, Ollie Meyers Livengood, whom he married on Aug. 23, 1941; two daughters, Judith A. Maxwell of Waynesboro and Nancy L. Sampson of Pittsburgh; one son, Samuel M. Livengood of Philadelphia; one sister, Mary E. Deal of Salisbury; one brother, James E. Livengood of Lancaster, Pa.; six grandchildren; one great-grandson; two nieces and one nephew.
He was preceded in death by one sister, Frances McTigue.
A memorial service will be Tuesday at 10 a.m. at Waynesboro Presbyterian Church, Waynesboro. The Rev. Charles B. Jessen will officiate. Graveside services will be Tuesday at 3 p.m. at Salisbury Cemetery, Salisbury.
There will be no viewing. However, the family will receive friends at the church 30 minutes prior to the service Tuesday.

Elmer E. Hann
NEEDMORE, Pa. - Elmer E. Hann, 64, of R.R. 1, Box 155, died Saturday, March 28, 1998, at his home.
Born Sept. 28, 1933, in Big Cove Tannery, Pa., he was the son of the late David R. and Adeline Kuhn Hann.
He was employed by JLG Industries in cylinder assembly.
He was a member of Needmore Bible Church.
He is survived by his wife, Joan Seiders Hann, whom he married on June 27, 1959; four daughters, Annette Kerkhoff and Loretta Wood, both of McConnellsburg, Pa., Tina Garland and Bobbi Jo Stevens, both of Needmore; one son, Scott Hann of Westcliffe, Colo.; four sisters, Cleo Keefer of Big Cove Tannery, Jessie Fix and Arlene Kuykendall, both of McConnellsburg, and Lois Leevy of Chambersburg, Pa.; four brothers, Frank Hann and John Hann, both of McConnellsburg, Blair Hann of Big Cove Tannery and Chalmer Hann of St. Thomas, Pa.; and two grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Melvin Hann and Harold Hann.
A memorial service will be Tuesday at 2 p.m. at Needmore Bible Church. The Rev. Doug Poffenberger will officiate. Burial will be private and held at the convenience of the family.
The family will receive friends Tuesday at the church one hour prior to the service.

Elsie H. Garling
CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - Elsie H. Garling, 94, a resident of Menno-Haven, and formerly of Chambersburg, died Saturday, March 28, 1998, at Menno-Haven.
Born April 27, 1903, in Antrim Township, Pa., she was the daughter of the late Jacob Franklin and Annie Rebecca Myers Garling.
She was employed by the former Interwoven Hosiery Co. for many years, working at the factories in Greencastle, Pa., Chambersburg and Hagerstown. She also was employed by the late Judge Chauncey M. Depuy and Mrs. John D. Schaal.
She was a member of Brethren In Christ Church since 1917.
She was the last of her immediate family. She is survived by 11 nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by three sisters and four brothers.
Services will be Tuesday at 2 p.m. at Montgomery Brethren In Christ Church, 6727 Montgomery Church Road, Mercersburg, Pa. The Rev. Curtis Bryant will officiate. Burial will be in the adjoining church cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the church one hour prior to the service Tuesday.

George I. Smetzer Sr.
WAYNESBORO, Pa. - George I. "Jutin" Smetzer Sr., 77, of 6937 Landfill Road, died Sunday, March 29, 1998, at his home.
Born Dec. 4, 1920, in Quincy Township, Franklin County, Pa., he was the son of the late Jacob and Elsie Baker Smetzer. He was a life resident of the Quincy Township area.
He attended Quincy schools.
He was first employed as a laborer by Martin Waybright Sawmill, South Mountain, Pa. Prior to retiring in 1983, he was employed by Grove Worldwide, Shady Grove, Pa.
He was a member of Central Baptist Church, Mont Alto, Pa.
He was a member of South Mountain Fish and Game Association and Chambersburg Rod and Gun Club.
He is survived by his wife, Betty Jane Ebersole Smetzer, whom he married on Sept. 8, 1951; three daughters, Helen Phillips of Shelby, N.C., Linda Daywalt of Waynesboro and Beverly Atherton of Mercersburg, Pa.; 12 sons, George R. Smetzer, Robert Smetzer, David Ebersole, George I. Smetzer Jr., James Smetzer, John Smetzer, Mark Smetzer and Rickey Smetzer, all of Waynesboro, Daniel Smetzer and Richard Smetzer, both of Monroe, N.C., Paul Smetzer and Charles Smetzer, both of Mount Pleasant, N.C.; three sisters, Viola Strausner and Helen Wadel, both of Waynesboro, and Catherine Verdier of Mont Alto, Pa.; two brothers, Ralph Smetzer and Paul Smetzer, both of Waynesboro; 30 grandchildren; and 20 great-grandchildren.
Services will be Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Grove Funeral Home, 50 S. Broad St., Waynesboro. The Rev. Ronald W. Skidmore will officiate. Burial will be in Mount Zion Cemetery, Quincy.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home Tuesday from 7 to 9 p.m.
Betty J. Potter
CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - Betty Jane Potter, 70, of 5958 Cumberland Highway, died Saturday, March 28, 1998, at Chambersburg Hospital.
Born Dec. 21, 1927, in Woodstock, Va., she was the daughter of the late Harvey and Sallie Newcomer Kessler.
She was preceded in death by her husband, John R. Potter, in 1991.
She was a 1945 graduate of Chambersburg High School.
She was employed as a legal secretary for many years by the law office of Wingerd and Long in Chambersburg.
She was a member of Upper Strasburg United Methodist Church, Upper Strasburg, Pa. She was a member and treasurer of United Methodist Women. She also was a member and secretary of Reaper's Sunday School Class.
She was a member of Women of the Moose Chapter 1128, Chambersburg; and member and chaplain of the Ladies Auxiliary of Hume-McNeal-Byers AMVETS Post 224, Chambersburg.
She is survived by two daughters, Linda Phinicie of Fayetteville, Pa., and Barbara Giberson of Allentown, Pa.; two sisters, Virginia House of Tacoma, Wash., and Catherine Boswell of Shady Side, Md.; one brother, Robert Kessler of Lanham, Md.; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Services will be Wednesday at 11:30 a.m. in the chapel of Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home, 333 Falling Spring Road, Chambersburg. The Rev. Earl F. Barrick will officiate. Burial will be in Parklawns Memorial Gardens, Chambersburg.
Visitation will be at the funeral home Tuesday from 7 to 9 p.m. and Wednesday one hour prior to the service.
Janice P. Shanholtz
MARION, Pa. - Janice P. Shanholtz, 58, of 264 Colorado St., died Sunday, March 29, 1998, at her home.
Born Sept. 2, 1939, in Guilford Township, Pa., she was the daughter of Mary Pensinger Statler of Menno-Village, Chambersburg, Pa., and the late Lester Picking.
She was a graduate of Chambersburg High School.
She was a homemaker. She assisted her husband in operating L.K. Shanholtz Body Shop, Marion.
She was a member of Heidelberg United Church of Christ, Marion.
In addition to her mother, she is survived by her husband, L. Keith Shanholtz, whom she married on July 5, 1969; a daughter, Carol Gift of Newburg, Pa.; three sons, Brad Gift of Korea, and Alan Shanholtz and Donald Gift II, both of Chambersburg; two stepdaughters, Lori Sanders of Beloit, Wis., and Cyndee Yeargan of Waynesboro, Pa.; four stepsons, Timothy Shanholtz of New Franklin, Pa., James Shanholtz of Lancaster, Pa., Jerry Shanholtz and Andrew Shanholtz, both of Waynesboro; a sister, Delores Kissel of Harrisburg, Pa.; a brother, Donald Picking of Marion; stepfather, Lyman L. Statler of Menno-Village; and 26 grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a stepdaughter, Robin L. Shanholtz; and a stepson, Anthony C. Shanholtz.
There will be no viewing. Graveside services will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Cedar Hill Cemetery, Greencastle. The Rev. Arthur Brown will officiate.
The family requests the omission of flowers. Memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, Franklin County Unit, 452 E. King St., Chambersburg, Pa. 17201.
