Merle E. Weaver Jr.

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - Merle Edward Weaver Jr., 64, formerly of 337 McKinley St., died Thursday, Jan. 8, 1998, at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center, Martinsburg, W.Va.

Born July 26, 1933, in Chambersburg, he was the son of Merle Edward Weaver Sr. of Shippensburg, Pa., and the late Julia Maybelle Adams Weaver.

He was formerly employed at Richard Textiles Corp., Shippensburg.

A U.S. Navy veteran, he served during the Korean War.

In addition to his  Father, he is survived by a stepsister, Doris J. Sheaffer of Shippensburg; a stepbrother, Robert Weaver of Souderton, Pa.; and an uncle, Joseph A. Adams of Fayetteville, Pa., who served as his guardian.

Graveside services will be Monday at 10 a.m. at Norland Cemetery, Chambersburg. The Rev. Paul B. Baker will officiate.

Arrangements are by Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home, 333 Falling Spring Road, Chambersburg.

Elnora Smith

MONT ALTO, Pa. - Elnora Attins Smith, 72, of 122 Poplar St., died Thursday, Jan. 8, 1998, at her home.

Born March 2, 1925, in Baltimore, she was the daughter of the late Henry and Geneva Germack Attins.

She graduated from Glen Burnie High School in Glen Burnie, Md.

She was a homemaker.

She was a member of Bixler United Methodist Church, Carroll County, Md.

She is survived by her husband, of 52 years, Ervin Smith; four children, Patricia Hart of Sykesville, Md., Ervin T. Smith Jr. of California, E. Jane Bull of Mont Alto and Erwin T. Smith of Glenn Burnie; nine brothers and sisters, Doris Attins of Columbus, Ohio, Catherine Gaither of Glenn Burnie, Ethel Miller of Fort Smallwood, Md., Florence Heffington of Pasadena, Md., Evelyn Attins of Pasadena, Margaret Arnold of Littlestown, Pa., Charles Attins of Taneytown, Md., Elmer Attins of Pasadena and Walter Attins of Denton, Md.; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Services will be Monday at 11 a.m. at Snyder-Lochstampfor Funeral Home, corners of South Church and West Second streets, Waynesboro. The Rev. David L. Keener will officiate. Burial will be in Mount Zion Cemetery, Quincy, Pa.

The family will receive friends today and Sunday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Memorial donations may be made in her memory to Alzheimer's Disease Research, 15825 Shady Grove Road, Suite 140, Rockville, Md. 20850-4022.

Anna C. Mellott

WARFORDSBURG, Pa. - Anna Crouse Mellott, 84, of Warfordsburg, died Friday, Jan. 9, 1998, at Fulton County Medical Center, McConnellsburg, Pa.

Born Nov. 11, 1913, in Big Cove Tannery, Pa., she was the daughter of the late Charles and Margaret Lauver Crouse.

She was a homemaker.

She attended Laurel Ridge Christian Church, Big Cove Tannery, Pa.

She is survived by her husband, Marshall Grant Mellott, whom she married Feb. 14, 1972; two stepdaughters, Jean Hann of Warfordsburg and Pearl Frost of Liberty, Pa.; two sisters, Ruth Bain of Big Cove Tannery and Olive Clever of Newburg, Pa.; two brothers, Frank Crouse and Walter Crouse, both of Big Cove Tannery; 11 grandchildren; and great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by four sisters; one brother; and one step son, Earl Mellott.

Services will be Sunday at 2 p.m. at Howard L. Sipes Funeral Home, Harrisonville, Pa. The Rev. Douglas Poffenberger will officiate. Burial will be in Pleasant Ridge Church of the Brethren, Needmore.

Visitation will be today from 2 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home, which also will be open Sunday from 9 a.m. until the time of the services.

Edison A. Akers

NEEDMORE, Pa. - Edison Amos Akers, 76, of Needmore, died Thursday, Jan. 8, 1998, at his home.

Born Aug. 3, 1921, in Akersville, Pa., he was the son of the late Clyde W. and Myrtle Duvall Akers.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Cora D. Spade Akers, in 1997.

He was last employed by Waring Products Division, McConnellsburg, Pa.

He was a farmer.

He was of the Protestant faith.

A veteran of World War II, he served with the U.S. Army as a military policeman.

He is survived by three sons, Gary Akers Sr. of Chambersburg, Larry Akers of Little Orleans, Md., and Rex Akers, of Needmore; two sisters, Sarita Haney of Mountain Home, N.C., and Thelma Scott of Medford, Ore.; one brother, Max Akers of Lincoln, Neb.; 13 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one granddaughter; three sisters; and two brothers.

Services will be Monday at 2 p.m. at Howard L. Sipes Funeral Home, Harrisonville, Pa. The Rev. Roger Truax will officiate. Burial will be in Bedford County Memorial Park, Bedford, Pa.

There will be no viewing.

Visitation will be Monday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the funeral home, before the services.

Robert E. Fike

CAMP HILL, Pa. - Robert Elwood Fike, 67, a resident of West Shore Health and Rehabilitation Center, the former Blue Ridge Haven Convalescent Center; and formerly of Waynesboro, Pa., died Friday, Jan. 9, 1998, at the center.

Born Feb. 3, 1930, in Maple Glenn, Pa., he was the son of the late Paul Fike and Cora Fullem.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Wilda A. Bingaman Fike, in 1987. They were married Jan. 30, 1953.

From 1947 to 1951, he was employed as a floral helper at Di Pasquale brothers, Myersdale, Pa. He later worked for Gibney Florist, Cearfoss in the greenhouse. Prior to retiring in 1985, he was employed as a roll hustler for Arnold Graphics, Hagerstown.

He is survived by four  daughters, Teresa R. Wallace and Elaine M. Livengood, both of Hagerstown, Karen A. Yates of Rockwood, Pa. and Gloria J. McLucas of Chambersburg, Pa.; four sons, Gary R. Fike of Waynesboro, Brian J. Fike and Philip P. Fike, both of Greencastle, Pa. and Mark D. Fike of California; and 11 grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his stepfather, Joseph Fullem; and one sister.

Services will be Monday at 1 p.m. at Waynesboro Church of the Brethren, 113 S. Church St., Waynesboro. Pastor John Paul Holsey will officiate. Burial will be in Parklawn Memorial Gardens, Chambersburg.

The family will receive friends today from 7 to 9 p.m. at Grove Funeral Home, 50 S. Broad St., Waynesboro.

Garnet E. Miller

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - Garnet E. Miller, 78, of 9554 Eden Drive, died Saturday, Jan. 10, 1998, at Chambersburg Hospital.

Born Jan. 6, 1920, in Edenville, Pa., he was the son of the late John Harvey and Carrie E. Poe Miller.

He retired from Letterkenny Army Depot, Chambersburg, in 1958. He then owned and operated Garnet Miller Orchards until retirement.

He was of the Protestant faith.

He is survived by his wife, Mary Ellen Moore Miller, whom he married on June 4, 1977; and one sister, Alice E. Miller of Chambersburg.

He was preceded in death by one brother, Raymond C. Miller, in January 1997.

Services will be Tuesday at 2 p.m. at Kelso-Cornelius Funeral Home, 6492 Lincoln Way West, St. Thomas, Pa. The Rev. Ken Wenger and the Rev. Stan McCammon will officiate. Burial will be in Brechbill Cemetery.

Visitation will be at the funeral home Tuesday one hour prior to the service.

Eugene E. Yingling

WAYNESBORO, Pa. - Eugene E. "Gene" Yingling, 83, of 12980 Mentzer Gap Road, died Saturday, Jan. 10, 1998, at Quincy United Methodist Home, Quincy, Pa.

Born Oct. 7, 1914, in Baltimore, he was the son of the late Roscoe and Mary Orndorff Yingling. He lived his early life in the Baltimore and Annapolis areas.

He attended school in Baltimore and Annapolis.

In his early life, he was a trainer and jockey for Steeple Chase Horse Racing. He then worked for Western Maryland Railway for several years. His main vocation in life thereafter was an automotive mechanic. He worked for J.V. Hoffman and Al McGarity garages in Waynesboro during the late 1930s and early 1940s. Beginning in the mid-1940s, he was co-owner and operator of Calimer-Yingling Garage on Pa. 16 in Rouzerville, Pa. He later became sole owner of Yingling's Garage, where he served the local (Hardee's) Municipal Airport on Midvale Road and maintained local school buses. He was semi-retired for the past three years due to ill health. He worked at the business office when his health permitted.

He was an active member of Calvary Chapel Episcopal Church, Beartown, Pa. He served many years as bookkeeper, treasurer and vestry chairperson.

He was a member of Pennsylvania Automotive Association, Southern Franklin County Garagemen Association and National AARP.

He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Ruth Irene Calimer Yingling; three sons, Martin E. Yingling and Bradley D. Yingling, both of Waynesboro, and William L. Yingling of Blue Ridge Summit, Pa.; four sisters, Iona Hayes of Severna Park, Md., Elizabeth Rausch of Baltimore, Ruth Krieg of Berlin, Md., and Dorothy Jones of Frederick, Md.; six grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by one brother, Bert Wollet.

Services will be Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Calvary Chapel Episcopal Church, Mentzer Gap Road, Beartown. The Rev. Daphne S. Killhour will officiate. Burial will be in the adjoining church cemetery.

The family will receive friends at Grove Funeral Home, 50 S. Broad St., Waynesboro, Tuesday from 7 to 9 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in the name of Eugene Yingling to Calvary Episcopal Church, c/o Boyd Burgan, 82 E. Main St., Waynesboro, Pa. 17268.

Dorothy A. Hallock

MARION, Pa. - Dorothy A. Hallock, 80, of 122 Colorado St., died Sunday, Jan. 11, 1998, at her home.

Born May 13, 1917, in Queens, N.Y., she was the daughter of the late Hans and Anna Mohr Appel.

She and her husband owned and operated Hallock Photography of Farmingdale, N.Y., and later of Islip, N.Y. They served many industries in the area and also the U.S. Navy. They sold their business in 1962 and moved to Florida. They moved to Marion in 1997.

She is survived by her husband, Kittridge J. Hallock, whom she married on Aug. 22, 1939; one son, Peter K. Hallock of Marion; one sister, Anna DeMarches of Modesto, Calif.; two grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Private services and burial will be held at the convenience of the family.

There will be no visitation.

The family requests the omission of flowers. Memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, Franklin Unit, 452 E. King St., Chambersburg, Pa. 17201.

Arrangements are by Lininger-Fries Funeral Home, 47 N. Park Ave., Mercersburg, Pa.

Laura A. Carbaugh

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - Laura Alice Carbaugh, 71, of 904 Wilson Ave., died Saturday, Jan. 10, 1998, at Franklin County Nursing Home, Guilford Township, Pa.

Born June 19, 1926, in Chambersburg, she was the daughter of the late Ralph J. and Blanche M. Davis Scott.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Paul M. Carbaugh, in 1954.

She was a homemaker.

She is survived by three  daughters, Betty J. Kriner and Laura A. Gelwicks, both of St. Thomas, Pa., and Tina M. Bracken of Chambersburg; three sons, Paul M. Carbaugh of Edenville, Pa., Ralph J. Carbaugh of Scotland, Pa., and William J. Carbaugh of Chambersburg; one sister, Betty O'Brien of Chambersburg; three brothers, Ralph Scott and Donald Scott, both of Chambersburg, and Robert Scott of Fayetteville, Pa.; 16 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by two sisters and one brother.

There will be no funeral service. Burial will be in Mount Pleasant Cemetery, Chambersburg.

Arrangements are by Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home, 333 Falling Spring Road, Chambersburg.
