Irvin P. Beard Jr.

WAYNESBORO, Pa. - Irvin P. Beard Jr., 79, of 67 Twin Hill Drive, died Sunday, Feb. 1, 1998, at Hershey Medical Center, Hershey, Pa.,

Born Feb. 6, 1918, in Baltimore, he was the son of the late Irvin P. Beard Sr. and Frances Lorene Honodel Beard. He lived his early life in Baltimore.

He was a 1936 graduate of Forest Park High School, Baltimore.

In 1940, he was employed as a machinist at the Navy Yard in Washington, D.C. He returned to Baltimore in 1946 and worked first for Western Electric, then for Bethlehem Steel and Diecraft. He moved to Rouzerville, Pa., in 1953, and worked for Fairchild Aircraft Manufacturing in Hagerstown. From 1962 until retiring in 1983, he was employed by Mack Truck, Hagerstown, in the tool and dye department.

He was a member of St. Andrew Roman Catholic Church, Waynesboro.

He was a member of BPO Elks Lodge 731 and Eagles Club Inc., both of Waynesboro, and National AARP.

He is survived by his wife, Sylvia Catherine Hemler Beard, whom he married on March 6, 1941; two  daughters, Marie Lorene Orvis of Chambersburg, Pa., and Sylvia C. Creager of Waynesboro; one sister, Betty White of Reno, Nev.; three grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by two sisters, Frances Biser and Mary Ann Beard; and one brother, James Crawford Beard.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Thursday at 10 a.m. at St. Andrew Roman Catholic Church, 12 N. Broad St., Waynesboro. The Rev. Thomas J. Hemler will be celebrant. Burial will be in Harbaugh Church Cemetery, Rouzerville.

The family will receive friends at Grove Funeral Home, 50 S. Broad St., Waynesboro, Wednesday from 7 to 9 p.m., where a wake service will be at 8 p.m.

Memorial donations may be made to St. Andrew Catholic School, 12 N. Broad St., Waynesboro, Pa. 17268.

Carl A. Friese Sr.

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - Carl A. Friese Sr., 77, of 107 Highland Circle, died Friday, Jan. 30, 1998, at Chambersburg Hospital.

Born Aug. 9, 1920, in Chambersburg, he was the son of the late John and Dora Shatzer Friese.

He was employed by Letterkenny Army Depot, Chambersburg, for 30 years as a mechanic supervisor and retired in 1970.

He was a veteran of World War II. He served with the U.S. Army Air Corps for six years as a master sergeant.

He attended King Street United Brethren Church.

He was a life member of Charles M. Nitterhouse VFW Post 1599, Chambersburg; member of Wesley Yeager American Legion Post 606, Fort Loudon, Pa., and Mercersburg Sportsman's Association.

He is survived by his wife, Lenora H. Hardee Friese, whom he married on Dec. 2, 1941; one daughter, Sharon K. Friese of Chambersburg; three sons, Carl A. Friese Jr. of Boca Raton, Fla., Dan R. Friese of Stewartstown, Pa., and William C. Friese of Jonestown, Pa.; one sister, June Foust of Chambersburg; one brother, Kenneth Friese of Fort McCord, Pa.; four grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter.

He was preceded in death by one sister, Kathryn Pheil; and two brothers, Melvin Friese and Leroy Friese.

Services will be Tuesday at 2:30 p.m. in the chapel of Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home, 333 Falling Spring Road, Chambersburg. The Rev. Lester F. Stine will officiate. Burial will be in Parklawns Memorial Gardens, Chambersburg. Graveside services will be conducted by Charles M. Nitterhouse Post 1599 VFW, Chambersburg.

Visitation will be at the funeral home today from 7 to 9 p.m. and one hour prior to the service Tuesday.

Memorial donations may be made to the American Lung Association of Central Pennsylvania, 6041 Linglestown Road, Harrisburg, Pa. 17112-0179; or King Street United Brethren Church, 172 E. King St., Chambersburg, Pa. 17201.

Grace E. Kauffman

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - Grace Eva Witmer Kauffman, 90, of Menno-Haven Retirement Community, died Friday, Jan. 30, 1998, at Chambersburg Hospital.

Born Feb. 25, 1907, in Vernon Township Humboldt County, Iowa, she was the daughter of the late John M. and Anna Wertz Witmer.

She was preceded in death by her husband, the Rev. Lester Kauffman, in 1993.

She graduated from Carlisle High School; and attended Lebanon Valley College.

She was a school teacher.

She was a member of Oakville United Methodist Church, Shippensburg.

She is survived by three sons, Larry E. Kauffman of Lancaster, Pa., Robert W. Kauffman of Duxbury, Mass. and Jerre M. Kauffman of Temple Hills, Md.; one sister, Viola Shettel of Menno-Village; six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

The services will be Tuesday at 2 p.m. at the Park Avenue United Methodist Church, Chambersburg. The Rev. Frank Monroe will officiate. Encryptment will be in Parklawns Mausoleum.

Visitation will be Tuesday one hour prior to the services at the church.

Arrangements are by Robert G. Sellers Funeral Home, 297 Philadelphia Ave., Chambersburg.

Norman L. Logan Jr.

FLAT ROCK, N.C. - Norman LeRoy "Lee" Logan Jr., 57, of 4 Brighton Court, died Friday, Dec. 26, 1997, at Pandee Memorial Hospital, Hendersonville, N.C.

Born Sept. 25, 1940, in Montgomery, Pa., he is the son of Norman LeRoy Logan Sr. of Hagerstown, and Sylvia H. Logan of Flat Rock, N.C.

He was a graduate of University of Delaware.

He was employed by General Motors Corp. as a comptroller.

He is survived by one daughter, Christina Foster of Lexington, S.C.; one son, Todd Logan of Milwaukee, Wis.; two sisters, Paige Nitzell of Hagerstown, and Barbara S. Logan of Silver Spring, Md.; and one grandson.

Services were held Wednesday in the chapel of Douglas A. Fiery Funeral Home, 1331 Eastern Blvd. North, Hagerstown. The Rev. Stephen D. Robison officiated. Burial was in Rest Haven Cemetery, Hagerstown.

Florence S. McCarl

MERCERSBURG, Pa. - Florence S. McCarl, 83, of 101 Linden Ave., died Tuesday, Dec. 30, 1997, at ManorCare Health Services, Chambersburg, Pa.

Born June 22, 1914, in Chambersburg, she was the daughter of the late David and Clara Hopple Stoner.

Her husband, William S. McCarl Sr., died in 1996.

She was a homemaker.

She was a member of First United Methodist Church of Mercersburg, and the Hoch Bible Class.

She is survived by three  daughters, Sara L. Metcalf of Mercersburg, Lois Jane Robinson of North Beach, Md., and Doris Jean Gorman of St. Thomas, Pa.; one son, William S. McCarl Jr. of Chambersburg; one brother, Herbert R. Stoner of Greencastle, Pa.; 15 grandchildren; and 25 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by four sisters and five brothers.

Services will be held today at 2 p.m. at Lininger-Fries Funeral Home, 47 N. Park Ave., Mercersburg. The Rev. Samuel L. Sheffler will officiate. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery, Mercersburg.

A viewing will be held at the funeral home today one hour prior to the service.

Memorial donations may be made to First United Methodist Church Building Fund, 11 N. Fayette St., Mercersburg, Pa. 17236; or to American Diabetes Association, c/o Joan Goetz, 219 W. Second St., Waynesboro, Pa. 17268.

Shirley L. Campbell

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - Shirley L. Campbell, 72, of 27 Beacon Court, died Tuesday, Dec. 30, 1997, at Chambersburg Hospital.

Born June 23, 1925, in Hagerstown, she was the daughter of the late Roy S. and Mary Spidell Mundey. She was the stepdaughter of the late Bessie McClay Mundey.

Her husband, Robert M. Campbell, died in 1993.

She was a graduate of North Hagerstown High School.

She was a homemaker.

She attended Calvary United Methodist Church in Fayetteville, Pa.

She is survived by one daughter, Vickie Highling of Frederick, Md.; one son, Larry R. Campbell of Conyers, Ga.; one sister, June Martin of Hagerstown; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by one son, Thomas M. Campbell.

A memorial service will be held today at 2 p.m. in the chapel of Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home, 333 Falling Spring Road, Chambersburg. The Rev. Craig Nesbitt will officiate. Burial will be private.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home 30 minutes prior to the service.

J. Frank Dorand

WAYNESBORO, Pa. - J. Frank "Fats" Dorand, 79, of 1 Frick Ave., Waynesboro, died Wednesday, Dec. 31, 1997, at Hershey Medical Center, Hershey, Pa.

Born June 16, 1918, in Mercersburg, Pa., he was the son of the late Everett E. and Ruth E. Wiles Dorand. He lived his early life in Marlowe, W.Va.

He was a 1938 graduate of Waynesboro High School. He attended University of Pittsburgh.

Early in life, he was employed as an inspector at Landis Tool Co. in Waynesboro. Following his discharge from the military he worked with his  Father at E.E. Dorand Moving and Storage Co. in Waynesboro until 1960. He then worked for a short time at Pangborn Corp. in Hagerstown. Prior to retiring in 1983, he worked at Letterkenny Army Depot in Chambersburg for 21 years in the production planning and control department.

He and his wife sold popcorn from 1950 through 1995 at area football games. They also made and sold popcorn at various parades, fairs and horse shows.

He served in the U.S. Army during World War II with Engineering Co. 660, serving in the European Theater. He served from 1942 to 1945.

He attended Blue Rock United Brethren in Christ Church near Waynesboro.

He was a member of Detrich-Brechbill American Legion Post 612 in St. Thomas, Pa., Disabled American Veterans Association, and National AARP.

He is survived by his wife, Dolores P. Price Dorand, whom he married Feb. 14, 1946; three sons, J. Tim Dorand of Carlisle, Pa., Ted D. Dorand of Lansdale, Pa., and Jeffrey E. Dorand of Waynesboro; one sister, Eloise Cook of Waynesboro; four grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by one brother, Ralph E. Dorand.

Services will be held Sunday at 2 p.m. at Blue Rock United Brethren in Christ Church, 7885 Mentzer Gap Road, Waynesboro. Pastor Jaye M. Bartle will officiate. Burial will be in Green Hill Cemetery, Waynesboro, with military graveside services conducted by Charles M. Nitterhouse VFW Post 1599 Honor Guard from Chambersburg.

The family will receive friends at Grove Funeral Home, 50 S. Broad St., Waynesboro, Saturday from 7 to 9 p.m.

Memorial donations may be made to Blue Rock United Brethren in Christ Church, 7885 Mentzer Gap Road, Waynesboro, Pa. 17268.

Sylvia M. Bumbaugh

WAYNESBORO, Pa. - Sylvia Mae Provard Cauffman Bumbaugh, 83, of 25 N. Potomac St., died Thursday, Jan. 1, 1998, at Chambersburg Hospital.

Born April 11, 1914, in Fairview, Quincy Township, Pa., she was the daughter of the late Cleveland and Clara Wagaman Provard.

She attended the Fairview school.

Her first husband, Adam Lewis Cauffman, died in 1957. They were married Sept. 13, 1930.

She was employed by Waynesboro Knitting Mill as a machine operator. She was then employed as assistant chef by Piney Mountain Nursing Home in Fayetteville, where her husband was the chef. She was last employed by Connie's Sportswear in Waynesboro as a machine operator, retiring in 1980.

She is survived by her husband, Earl E. Bumbaugh, a resident of Franklin County Nursing Home in Chambersburg, whom she married July 18, 1959; one daughter, L. Aileen Noll of Waynesboro; one son, Lewis E. "Tom" Cauffman of Waynesboro; two stepdaughters, Kathy Taylor and Sherry Crabtree, both of Fike, Ala.; two sisters, Rosalie P. Beeler of Chambersburg, and Dorothea A. Verdier of South Mountain, Pa.; five brothers, Ray C. Provard of California, Robert E. Provard, Gerald M. Provard and L. Lavern Provard, all of Waynesboro, and Donald R. Provard of Mont Alto, Pa.; five grandchildren; four stepgrandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.

Graveside services will be held Sunday at 4 p.m. at Burns Hill Cemetery in Waynesboro. Pastor Walter A. Stuart will officiate.

There will be no public viewing.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to American Cancer Society, 452 E. King St., Chambersburg, Pa. 17201.

Arrangements are by Grove Funeral Home in Waynesboro.
