Herbert N. Shatzer

GREENCASTLE, Pa. - Herbert Noble Shatzer, 47, of 119 N. Carlisle St., died Saturday, Feb. 14, 1998, at Washington County Hospital.

Born Sept. 28, 1950, in Hagerstown, he was the son of Mildred DeLee Sharar Shatzer of Greencastle, and the late Herbert Erdman Shatzer.

He was a 1968 graduate of Greencastle-Antrim High School.

He was employed as a shipping clerk at First Data Merchant Services in Hagerstown.

He served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War from 1968 to 1971.

He was of the Protestant faith.

He was a member of Frank L. Carbaugh American Legion Post 373, Harry D. Zeigler Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6319, and Greencastle Sportsman's Association, all in Greencastle.

In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife, Jerry Lee Sheffler Shatzer, whom he married Jan. 14, 1973; one daughter, Angela Dawn Atherton of Greencastle; one son, H. Andrew Shatzer of Orrstown, Pa.; one brother, Gary Wayne Shatzer Sr. of Greencastle; and a number of nieces and nephews.

Services will be Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Miller-Grove Funeral Home, 521 S. Washington St., Greencastle. The Rev. Caroline J. Smith will officiate. Burial will be in Cedar Hill Cemetery in Greencastle, at the convenience of the family.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home Tuesday from 7 to 9 p.m. VFW Post 6319 will have a prayer service at the funeral home at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Memorial donations may be made to American Diabetes Association, c/o Joan Goetz, 219 W. Second St., Waynesboro, Pa. 17268.

Evelyn E. Harmison

TOPTON, Pa. - Evelyn E. Harmison, 89, formerly of 1015 Spring St., Reading, Pa., died Tuesday, Feb. 10, 1998, at Topton Lutheran Home in Topton, Pa.

Born in Hagerstown, she was the daughter of the late Macie Weller and Charles Morningstar.

Her husband, Charles E. Harmison, died in 1986.

She is survived by two  daughters, E. Patricia Rhoads of Fleetwood, Pa., and Jacqueline C. Wenger of Albuquerque, N.M.; five grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.

Services will be held Monday at 1:30 p.m. at Sanders Funeral Home, 1501 N. 11th St., Reading. Burial will be in Forest Hills Memorial Park.

A viewing will be held one hour prior to the service.

Louise E. Lucas

WARFORDSBURG, Pa. - Louise Ellen Lucas, 84, of Route 3, died Friday, Feb. 13, 1998, at Fulton County Medical Center in McConnellsburg, Pa.

Born July 3, 1913, in Hancock, she was the daughter of the late Richard R. and Addie Smith Bishop.

Her husband, William Guy Lucas, died in 1968. They were married May 28, 1928.

Early in life, she was a seamstress with Jacobs brothers Clothing Manufacture in Hancock.

She was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Hancock.

She is survived by two sons, Herbert G. Lucas and William G. Lucas Jr., both of Warfordsburg; two sisters, Pauline Wink of Warfordsburg, and Edith Caldwell of Hancock; two brothers, John E. Bishop and Ralph Bishop, both of Hancock; 11 nieces and 13 nephews.

She was preceded in death by one daughter, Opal Ellen Lucas; one son, John R. Lucas; two sisters, Virginia Barnhart and Lee Ellen Hixon; and one brother, Clyde Bishop.

Services will be held Monday at 11 a.m. at Parkhead United Methodist Church. The Rev. Ray M. Rogers will officiate. Burial will be in Parkhead Cemetery.

The family will receive friends at Grove Funeral Home, 141 W. Main St., Hancock, today from 7 to 9 p.m. For the convenience of friends the funeral home wil be open today from 2 to 9 p.m.

Memorial donations may be made to St. Paul's Lutheran Church, P.O. Box 476, Hancock, Md. 21750; or to the organization of your choice.

Laurence R. Ball Sr.

WAYNESBORO, Pa. - Laurence R. Ball Sr., 66, of 215 W. Main St., Apartment 1F, died Saturday, Feb. 14, 1998, at his home.

Born July 27, 1931, in Blackwell, Okla., he was the son of Vanita E. Ward Ball of Fayetteville, Pa., and the late Orion L. Ball.

He was employed locally in various positions. His last employment was with Shaad Detective Agency as a security guard.

He was a member of Fayetteville Church of God.

He was a lifetime member of Landis-McCleaf Detachment of Marine Corps League in Chambersburg, Pa.

In addition to his mother, he is survived by one daughter, Dorcus M. Keefer of Fayetteville; one son, James O. Ball of Chambersburg; three stepsons, Jayme L. Stouffer of Ohio, Todd M. Barkdoll of Waynesboro, and Brad A. Barkdoll of Zullinger, Pa.; one sister, Jane Coffman of Chambersburg; one brother, Harold Ball of Oklahoma.; eight grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; eight stepgrandchildren; nieces and nephews; and a companion and caregiver, Julia F. Stouffer Barkdoll of Waynesboro.

He was preceded in death by two sons, Laurence R. Ball Jr., and David L. Ball; one sister; two brothers; and two stepsisters.

Services will be held Tuesday at 2:30 p.m. at Grove Funeral Home, 50 S. Broad St., Waynesboro. The Rev. George S. Mouer will officiate. Burial will be in Parklawn Cemetery in Chambersburg.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home Monday from 7 to 9 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Summit Health Hospice Program, 176 S. Coldbrook Ave., Chambersburg, Pa. 17268.

Gerald L. Zeigler Sr.

WAYNESBORO, Pa. - Gerald L. "Jerry" Zeigler Sr., 78, of 14982 Wayne Highway South, died Friday, Feb. 13, 1998, at his home.

Born Dec. 15, 1919, in Waynesboro, he was the son of the late Ira W. and Myrtle S. Collins Zeigler.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Frances L. Funk Zeigler, in 1995. They were married May 1942.

He was a 1938 graduate of Waynesboro High School.

He served with the U.S. Navy during World War II, stationed in France.

He was employed by Frick Co., Waynesboro, as a master machinist, retiring in 1982.

He was a member of Joe Stickell American Legion Post 15, Waynesboro; NRA; and Friends of the Gettysburg Park.

He is survived by a daughter, Sandra J. Boyer of Bernville, Pa.; a son, Gerald L. "Jerry" Zeigler Jr. of Waynesboro; nine grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and cousins.

Services will be Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Grove Funeral Home, 50 S. Broad St., Waynesboro. Pastor Ray Kipe will officiate. Burial will be in Hargaugh Church Cemetery, Rouzerville, Pa.

The family will receive friends Monday from 7 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Martha R. Gorman

FAYETTEVILLE, Pa. - Martha R. Benchoff Gorman, 86, of Piney Mountain Rehabilitation Center, died Thursday, Feb. 12, 1998, at the Rehabilitation Center.

Born Dec. 5, 1911, in Highfield, Md., she was the daughter of the late Clarence and Margaret McCleaf Benchoff.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Ernest Gorman, 1987. They were married May 1931.

She was employed for more than 55 years at Waynesboro Knitting Co., retiring in 1980 as a quality control supervisor.

She was a member of Evangelical Lutheran Church, Waynesboro.

She is survived by nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by three sisters, Erma Hovis, Edna Mathias and Mae Benchoff; and three brothers, David Benchoff, Charles Benchoff and Eugene Benchoff.

Services will be Monday at 11 a.m. at Grove Funeral Home, 50 S. Broad St., Waynesboro. Burial will be in Green Hill Cemetery.

The family will receive friends Sunday from 3 to 6 p.m. at the funeral home.

Memorial donations may be made to Evangelical Lutheran Church, 43 S. Church St., Waynesboro, Pa. 17268.

Betty J. Holtry

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - Betty J. Holtry, 51, of 2035 Wayne Road, died Friday, Feb. 13, 1998, at her home.

Born Dec. 14, 1946, in Mainsville, Pa., she was the daughter of Joseph W. and Margaret Adams McKenrick of Shippensburg, Pa.

She was a 1964 graduate of Shippensburg High School, Shippensburg.

She was a homemaker.

She was an active member of Corpus Christi Catholic Church, Chambersburg.

In addition to her parents, she is survived by her husband, Jay L. Holtry Sr.; two sons, Jay L. Holtry Jr. and Todd A. Holtry, both of Chambersburg; four brothers, Paul McKenrick of Chambersburg, John McKenrick, Ray McKenrick and Mike McKenrick, all of Shippensburg; two sisters, Kay McKenrick and Mary McKenrick, both of Shippensburg; one granddaughter; and one stepgranddaughter.

She was preceded in death by a son, Timothy J. Holtry, in 1995; and a brother, Jim McKenrick.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Monday at 10 a.m. at Corpus Christi Catholic Church, 320 Philadelphia Ave., Chambersburg. The Rev. Daniel F. Lawler SJ will be celebrant. Burial will be in Corpus Christi Cemetery, Chambersburg.

The family will receive friends Sunday from 7 to 9 p.m. at Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home, 333 Falling Spring Road, Chambersburg.

Beulah A. Bowen

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - Beulah A. Bowen, 94, a resident of Shook Home; and formerly of 109 N. Coldbrook Ave., died Thursday, Feb. 12, 1998, at Shook Home.

Born Nov. 22, 1903, in Duffield, Pa., she was the daughter of the late William O. and Henrietta Spangler Ankerbrand.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas C. Bowen, in 1965.

She was a 1920 graduate of Chambersburg High School, Chambersburg.

She worked as an accountant in the business office of the former Shippensburg State College, retiring in 1966 after 29 years of service. She also had been employed for six years as the secretary at First United Methodist Church, Chambersburg.

She was a member of First United Methodist Church, Chambersburg, for more than 70 years. She was a member and former teacher of Win-One Philathea Sunday School Class at the church for more than 50 years. She also was a member of United Methodist Women.

She was a member of Burt J. Asper Post 46 American Legion Ladies Auxiliary, Chambersburg; Franklin County Nursing Home Auxiliary, Chambersburg; and Chambersburg Hospital Auxiliary. She was a volunteer at Chambersburg Hospital. She was a member of Quincy United Methodist Home Auxiliary, Quincy, Pa.; Benjamin Franklin Barracks 798, Chambersburg; Franklin County Chapter; Pennsylvania Associations of Retired State Employees; National Association of Retired Persons; AARP Chapter 1507, Chambersburg; Chambersburg Area Council of Republican Women, Chambersburg; and Golden Age Club, Chambersburg.

She is survived by one son, Thomas C. Bowen of Dumfries, Va.; one grandson, Michael A. Bowen of Woodbridge, Va.; four granddaughters, Karen M. Smith of Lorton, Va., Lisa R. Bowen, Laura A. Bowen and Mark T. Bowen, all of Dumfries; and two great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by two sisters and two brothers.

Services will be Monday at 11:30 a.m. in the chapel of Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home, 333 Falling Spring Road, Chambersburg. The Rev. Donald C. Nolder will officiate. Burial will be in Norland Cemetery, Chambersburg.

The viewing will be Sunday from 2 to 4 p.m. at the funeral home.

Memorial donations may be made to First United Methodist Church, 225 S. Second St., Chambersburg, Pa. 17201.
