James E. Reed
WAYNESBORO, Pa. - James E. Reed, 64, of 8977 Wayne Highway, died Friday, Dec. 5, 1997, at his home.
Born April 7, 1933, in Mont Alto, Pa., he was the son of the late Oscar Gay and Edith Virginia Gossert Reed. He lived all of his life in the area of Quincy Township, Pa.
He received his GED from the Waynesboro School District.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force and served during the Korean War.
Following his military service, he became a computer operator at Letterkenny Army Depot, Chambersburg, Pa. He retired in 1988 after 36 years of service.
He was a member of Order of the Owls Nest 1073, Waynesboro; National Rifle Association; Retirees Association of Letterkenny; brothers of the Brush; and National AARP.
He is survived by his wife, JoAnn Bond Reed, whom he married on June 21, 1977; two daughters, Theresa Phillips of Blue Ridge Summit, Pa., and Rose Mary Rhone of Fayetteville, Pa.; one stepdaughter, Debbie Martin of Chambersburg; two stepsons, Jay Gossert of Waynesboro and Chuck Orr of Mercersburg, Pa.; two sisters, Anna Sanders and Creana Freeman, both of Quincy, Pa.; four brothers, George Reed and Dick Reed, both of Waynesboro, Lewis Reed and Charles Reed, both of Mont Alto, Pa.; two grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by one sister, Jane Kesselring; and one brother, Ralph Reed.
Services will be Tuesday at 1 p.m. at Grove Funeral Home, 50 S. Broad St., Waynesboro. Pastor Frank J. Kocek will officiate. Burial will be in Mount Zion Cemetery, near Mont Alto.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home today from 7 to 9 p.m.
Eva M. Zullinger
CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - Eva Mae Zullinger, 93, of 362 W. King St., died Friday, Dec. 5, 1997, at her home.
Born Sept. 24, 1904, in Guilford Township, Pa., she was the daughter of the late James and Clara Schultz Hassler.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Paul K. Zullinger, in 1980.
She was employed as a seamstress by the former J. Schoeneman in Chambersburg, Pa. She retired in 1969.
She was a member of First United Methodist Church, Chambersburg, and Win One Philathea Sunday School class.
She was a member of Ladies Auxiliary Charles M. Nitterhouse Post 1599 Veterans of Foreign Wars; Women of the Moose Chapter 1128, both of Chambersburg; and Franklin County Nursing Home Auxiliary.
She was an avid bowler. In 1994, she was honored by the National Bowling Association for actively bowling for more than 50 years.
She is survived by one son, Robert G. Zullinger of Chambersburg; two granddaughters, Connie Seacrest of Atlanta and Lou Ann Zullinger of Philadelphia; one grandson, Nelson R. Zullinger of Chambersburg; and four great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by one son, Merle E. Zullinger; and two sisters, Hazel Hassler Stull and Ruth Hassler Bumbaugh.
Services will be Tuesday at 11:30 a.m. in the chapel of Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home, 333 Falling Spring Road, Chambersburg. The Rev. Donald C. Nolder will officiate. Burial will be in Norland Cemetery, Chambersburg.
The viewing will be at the funeral home Tuesday from 10 to 11:30 a.m.

Merrill E. Richards
McCONNELLSBURG, Pa. - Merrill E. "Pete" Richards, 80, of RD 2, Box 175, died Thursday, Dec. 4, 1997, at Fulton County Medical Center.
Born March 4, 1917, in Cito, Pa., he was the son of the late Hayes Edward and Rhoda Olive Mellott Richards.
He was an auto mechanic at K.G. Richards; and a dairy farmer prior to retirement.
He was a member of Cito Methodist Church.
He was a member of Lockins Gun Club.
He is survived by his wife, Edna Ruth Wink Richards, whom he married in 1949; two daughters, Linda Lou Grissinger and Annette Kay Henderson, both of McConnellsburg; two sons, Hiram Eugene Richards of Shippensburg, Pa., and Hayes Lee Richards of McConnellsburg; two sisters, Betty Black of Montana and Mildred Kesselring of St. Thomas, Pa.; two brothers, Donald "Jim" Richards and S. Lee "Dude" Richards, both of McConnellsburg; four grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
He was preceded in death by two sisters.
Services will be Monday at 11 a.m. at Cito Methodist Church. The Rev. Donald Bard will officiate. Burial will be in Union Cemetery, McConnellsburg.
The family will receive friends Sunday from 7 to 9 p.m. at Kelso-Cornelius Funeral Home, 322 N. 2nd St., McConnellsburg. For the convenience of friends, visitation also will be Monday one hour prior to the services at the church; and Sunday from 2 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.
George L. Gayman
CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - George Lester Gayman, 88, of 201 Franklin Farm Lane, and formerly of 6002 Cumberland Highway, died Wednesday, Dec. 3, 1997, at Franklin County Nursing Home, Guilford Township, Pa.
Born Sept. 21, 1909, in Chambersburg, he was the son of the late Abraham R. and Anne M. Eckenrode Gayman.
He retired in 1974, after 30 years, from HJ Heinz Co., Chambersburg, as a mechanic. Earlier he had been a farmer.
He was a member of Bethel Assembly of God Church, Chambersburg.
He was a member of AARP.
He is survived by his wife, Velva C. Hargleroad Gayman, a resident of Franklin County Nursing Home, Chambersburg; one son, Ronald D. Gayman of Chambersburg; 11 grandchildren; and 20 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by one daughter, Peggy Ann Fraker, in 1993; one sister; and four brothers.
Services will be Saturday at 10 a.m. at Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home, 333 Falling Spring Road, Chambersburg. The Rev. Elmer T. Kipe will officiate. Burial will be in Parklawns Memorial Gardens, Chambersburg.
Visitation will be Saturday one hour prior to the services at the funeral home.
Gladys H. Clark
CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - Gladys H. Clark, 80, of 18 S. Penn Hall Drive, and formerly of South Allison Street, Greencastle, Pa., died Wednesday, Dec. 3, 1997, at Chambersburg Hospital.
Born Jan. 31, 1917, in Clear Spring, she was the daughter of the late Albert C.M. and Elizabeth Riggs Houck.
She was a graduate of Clear Spring High School and graduated as a registered nurse from St. Agnes Hospital, Baltimore.
She was an Avon sales representative, for more than 25 years, retiring in 1980. Earlier, she practiced in pediatrics, private duty and commercial nursing.
She was a member of St. Mark the Evangelist Catholic Church of Greencastle, where she was active in church organizations.
She is survived by her husband, of 55 years, James T. Clark; three sons, Robert C. Clark of Crownsville, Md., J. Thomas Clark of Portland, Ore., and Jeffrey A. Clark of Lewes, Del.; one sister, Helen V. Shry of Hagerstown; one brother, David F. Houck of Clear Spring; and four grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by two sisters; and one brother.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Saturday at 11 a.m. at St. Mark the Evangelist Catholic Church, 385 S. Ridge Ave., Greencastle. The Rev. Joseph L. Stahura will be celebrant. Burial will be in Cedar Hill Cemetery, Greencastle.
The family will receive friends today from 7 to 9 p.m. at Harold M. Zimmerman and Son Funeral Home, 45 S. Carlisle St., Greencastle, where the rosary will be recited at 8 p.m.

Betty L. Smetzer
FAYETTEVILLE, Pa. - Betty Louise Smetzer, 51, of 5429 Spruce Road, died Wednesday, Dec. 3, 1997, at Chambersburg Hospital, Chambersburg, Pa.
Born June 29, 1946, she was the daughter of the late James V. Shepard II and Betty J. Daywalt Shepard. She lived her early life in the Caledonia, Pa., area.
She received her G.E.D. from Chambersburg High School. She also received her licensed practical nurse's certificate from Franklin County Vo-Tech.
She was employed by South Mountain Restoration Center as a nurse's aide and then at Piney Mountain Nursing Home as a licensed practical nurse. She was last employed by Franklin County Nursing Home, Chambersburg, as a licensed practical nurse.
She is survived by two daughters, Hope E. Dague and Amy Jo Smetzer, both of Fayetteville; four sons, Robert J. Smetzer, Michael D. Smetzer, James R. Smetzer and Harry Daniel Monn Jr., all of Fayetteville; four sisters, Mary A. Beck, June M. Beecher, and Laura M. Wagaman, all of Fayetteville, and Sara J. Bleecher of Lancaster, Pa.; two brothers, James V. Shepard III and William J. Shepard, both of South Mountain, Pa.; two grandchildren; her companion of 17 years, Harry D. Monn Sr.; nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by one sister, Linda L. Shepard.
Services will be held at the convenience of the family. The Rev. Joseph C. Carolin will officiate.

Vada A. Patterson
CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - Vada Arnold Patterson, 86, of Shook Home, and formerly of 426 Cumberland Ave., died Wednesday, Dec. 3, 1997, at her home.
Born Aug. 24, 1911, in Reed Spring, Mo., she was the daughter of the late John and Rose Arnold.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Lynn T. Patterson, in 1983.
She was employed at Letterkenny Army Depot during World War II; and she later worked at J.C. Penney Co., retiring in 1973.
She was a member of Presbyterian Church of Falling Spring.
She was a member of Martha Custus Chapter Order of the Eastern Star.
She is survived by one son, Carl A. Patterson of Chambersburg; one granddaughter, Melissa L. Patterson of Chambersburg; and one grandson, Chesley B. Patterson of Chambersburg.
A memorial service will be Friday at 4 p.m. at Robert G. Sellers Funeral Home, 297 Philadelphia Ave., Chambersburg. The Rev. William H. Harter will officiate. Burial will be in Lincoln Cemetery.
There will be no viewing.

Helen M. Pike
WILLIAMSON, Pa. - Helen M. "Pud" Pike, 79, of 5436 Warm Spring Road, died Tuesday, Dec. 2, 1997, at her home.
Born Jan. 14, 1918, in Dickey's Station, Pa., she was the daughter of the late Frank L. and Celia M. Murray Divelbiss.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Elwood A. Pike Sr., in 1978.
She worked at the former Stanley Co. of Chambersburg, Pa., for more than 25 years. She was later employed at the former Parnell Restaurant of Fort Loudon, Pa., for 15 years.
She was a member of St. Luke's Lutheran Church of Williamson.
She was a member of Norland Chapter AARP.
She is survived by two sons, Elwood A. Pike Jr. of Fort Loudon and John E. Pike of Great Falls, S.C.; one sister, Margaret Walters of Annandale, Va.; two brothers, Elmer Divelbiss of Hagerstown and Frank Divelbiss of Chambersburg; four half sisters, Phyllis Fink of Cambridge, Ind., Ruth McNair of Hagerstown, Joyce Ernst of Mercersburg, Pa., and Edna Rae Divelbiss of Clear Spring; two half brothers, Raymond Divelbiss and Richard Divelbiss, both of Clear Spring; and four grandchildren.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by two sisters, Mary Ellen Higgins and Isabel Gress; and two brothers, Grant Divelbiss and Walter Divelbiss.
Funeral services will be Friday at 2 p.m. at St. Luke's Lutheran Church. The Rev. Alan R. Wilson will officiate. Burial will be in St. Thomas Cemetery, St. Thomas, Pa.
The viewing will be today from 7 to 9 p.m. at Lininger-Fries Funeral Home, 47 N. Park Ave., Mercersburg; and Friday one hour prior to the services at the church.
