Pennsylvania Obituary and Marriage Records, 1947-2010

Wayne M. Barnhart

ST. THOMAS, Pa. - Wayne M. Barnhart, 74, formerly of 420 S. Carlisle St., Greencastle, Pa., died Sunday, Dec. 21, 1997, at the home of his daughter and son-in-law, Pamela S. and Donald Kramer Jr., of 2997 McDowell Road, St. Thomas.

Born Jan. 29, 1923, in Antrim Township, Pa., he was the son of the late Roy M. and Martha A. Skiles Barnhart.

He retired from Mack Trucks in Hagerstown, and formerly worked for Fairchild Aircraft in Hagerstown, GAF in Blue Ridge Summit, Pa., Wayne Tool Co. in Waynesboro, Pa., BMY in York, Pa., and Landis Machine Co. in Waynesboro.

A veteran of World War II, he served with the U.S. Army in the European Theater. He received the Purple Heart with two oak clusters.

He was a member of Harry D. Zeigler VFW Post 6319 in Greencastle, Pa., Waynesboro Moose Lodge and Mercersburg American Legion.

He is survived by his daughter, Pamela S. Kramer of St. Thomas; two sons, Marvin J. Barnhart of Spring Grove, Pa., and Gary L. Barnhart of Rouzerville, Pa.; two sisters, Mildred Barnhart of Scotland, Pa., and Anna Mary Moser of Greencastle; two brothers, Blaine Barnhart of Greencastle, Pa., and Roy M. Barnhart Jr. of Gulfport, Fla.; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by two sisters, Helen Musselman and Florence Ehrhart; and his former wife, Madge Kuykendall.

Services will be held Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Harold M. Zimmerman and Son Funeral Home, 45 S. Carlisle St., Greencastle. The Rev. Gayle L. Ruble Sr. will officiate. Burial will be in Parklawns Memorial Gardens in Chambersburg with graveside military honors conducted by Chambersburg VFW Post 1599 Honor Guard.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home today from 7 to 9 p.m., where Greencastle VFW will hold a memorial service at 7:30 p.m.

The family requests the omission of flowers. Memorial donations may be made to Hospice of the Good Shepherd, 2700 Luther Drive, Chambersburg, Pa. 17201.

Glen E. Ritter

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - Glen E. "Pete" Ritter, 83, of 835 Meadowbrook Lane, died Sunday, Dec. 21, 1997, at his home.

Born Oct. 12, 1914, in Fayetteville, Pa., he was the son of the late Edward Lewis and Martha Calimer Ritter.

His wife, Ruth Fisher Ritter, died in 1970.

He was a construction worker for more than 45 years, retiring in 1980.

He was a member of Charles Nitterhouse Post 1599 VFW, Loyal Order of Moose 842, Burt J. Asper Post 46 American Legion, Landis-McCleaf Detachment Marine Corps League, and AMVETS Post 224.

He is survived by one son, Charles Edward Ritter of Warren, Ohio; four sisters, Pauline Cramer, Gladys V. Ritter, Catherine Calimer, and Janet Hartman, all of Chambersburg; two brothers, Kenneth Ritter of Chambersburg, and Robert Ritter of Fayetteville; six grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Services will be held Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Robert G. Sellers Funeral Home, 297 Philadelphia Ave., Chambersburg. The Rev. Harold Posey and the Rev. Guy Baer will officiate. Burial will be in Norland Cemetery.

Visitation will be held at the funeral home today from 7 to 9 p.m.

Otis J. Hill

FAYETTEVILLE, Pa. - Otis J. Hill, 85, of 5099 Conocodell Drive, and formerly of Williamsport, Pa., died Friday, Dec. 19, 1997, at The Chambersburg Hospital.

Born April 11, 1912, in Kittle Creek, Pa., he was the son of the late John D. and Mabel Houseknecht Hill.

His wife, Eleanor J. Stoetzel Hill, died in 1995.

He was a 1929 graduate of Williamsport High School, and attended Lycoming College in Williamsport, Pa.

He was employed for National Cash Register in Hagerstown for 30 years, where he was a manager. He retired in 1975.

He was a veteran of World War II, serving with the U.S. Army.

He was a member of St. Andrews Episcopal Church in Shippensburg.

He was a life member of Royal P. Steinbacher American Legion Post 611 in South Williamsport, and a member of Burt J. Asper American Legion Post 46 in Chambersburg, Pa., and John F. Laedlein Lodge 707 F&AM in Williamsport.

He was an avid golfer and was a member of Penn National Golf Club in Fayetteville.

He is survived by one daughter, Susan H. Glick of Fayetteville; and one granddaughter, Elaine E. Crawford of Binghamton, N.Y.

He was preceded in death by one sister, Lorena Ranck; and one brother, Larue Hill.

A Memorial Eucharist will be celebrated today at 10:30 a.m. at Christ Episcopal Church, 426 Mulberry St., Williamsport, with the Rev. William F. Murphey as celebrant. Burial will be in Wildwood Cemetery in Williamsport.

There will be no viewing; however friends will be received at Susan H. Glick's home, 5125 Conocodell Drive, Fayetteville, Tuesday from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.

The family requests the omission of flowers. Memorial donations may be made to St. Andrews Episcopal Church, 21 N. Prince St., Shippensburg, Pa. 17257.

James H. Satterfield

ENON VALLEY, Pa. - James H. Satterfield, 78, of Pa. 351, died Sunday, Dec. 21, 1997, at The Medical Center in Beaver, Ohio.

Born Oct. 9, 1919, in Six Mile Run, Pa., he was the son of the late James F. and Ada G. Hess Satterfield.

His wife, Hazel R. Booher Satterfield, died in 1976. They were married June 3, 1944.

He was employed as a mill worker at Babcock and Wilcox in Beaver Falls, Pa., for 12 years, retiring in 1984. He was previously employed by the former NRM Co. in Columbiana, Ohio.

He was a veteran of World War II, serving with the U.S. Army. He was awarded the Purple Heart.

He was a member of Enon United Presbyterian Church.

He also was a member of Meridian Lodge 411 F&AM and the Scottish Rite, New Castle Consistory where he was a life member of its Legion of Honor. He was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8106 of New Galilee, Pa., a life member of American Legion Post 322 of Mapleton Depot, Pa., a charter member of Enon Valley Sportsmans Club, and a member of SNPJ.

He is survived by one daughter, Joyce Thompson of Waynesboro, Pa.; one son, Frank Satterfield of East Palestine, Ohio; two sisters, Margaret Hollingshead of Texarkana, Ark., and Mary Harclerode of Everett, Pa.; his caregiver, Sophie Fritz of Enon Valley; six grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one sister, Hazel Bussard; and two brothers, W. Clair Satterfield, and Darrell D. Satterfield.

Services will be Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Long Funeral Chapel in Saxton, Pa. The Rev. Lanny Hoover will officiate. Burial will be in Grandview Cemetery in Saxton.

Friends may call at Van Dyke-Swaney Funeral Home in East Palestine, today from 7 to 9 p.m., where Meridian Lodge will conduct masonic services at 7:30 p.m. Friends also may call at Long Funeral Chapel Tuesday from 7 to 9 p.m.

Memorial donations may be made to VFW of New Galilee.

Luther N. Martin

BLUE RIDGE SUMMIT, Pa. - Luther N. Martin, 82, of 12288 Charmain Lane, died Sunday, Dec. 21, 1997, at Waynesboro Hospital.

Born March 23, 1915, in Adams County, Pa., he was the son of the late Charles and Mary Stem Martin.

He was a graduate of University of Missouri, received his MBA from Duke University and attended Shenandoah College.

He was a veteran of World War II, serving with the U.S. Army.

He was a member of St. Jacob's United Church of Christ.

He was founder and owner of Luther Martin Real Estate and Insurance Companies of Blue Ridge Summit. For a number of years he owned and operated Martin's Hardware.

He was a member of Waynesboro Masonic Lodge, Harrisburg Consistory, and Zembo Temple.

He was active in the Franklin County Republican Party and served as a committeeman.

He was a former member of the board and past president of Fairfield National Bank, former member of the board of Washington Township Municipal Authority, a life member of Blue Ridge Fire Co. and a member of Cascade American Legion, Waynesboro Country Club, Waynesboro Elks Club, Blue Ridge Sportsman's Association and Fairfield AMVETS.

He is survived by one daughter, Mary R. Lindquist of Sabillasville, Md.; one sister, Florence Seiferd of Fairfield; and one brother, Robert Martin Sr. of Fairfield.

Services will be Wednesday at 10 a.m. at Monahan Funeral Home, 125 Carlisle St., Gettysburg, Pa. The Rev. Eugene M. Cline will officiate. Burial will be in St. Jacobs Cemetery.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home Tuesday from 7 to 9 p.m.

Memorial donations may be made to St. Jacobs United Church of Christ, Fairfield, Pa. 17320.

Catherine A.P. Horst

GREENCASTLE, Pa. - Catherine A. Peterson Horst, 84, of 1422 Milnor Road, died Saturday, Dec. 20, 1997, at Waynesboro Hospital in Waynesboro, Pa.

Born Oct. 3, 1913, in Pierce, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late John William and Blanche Ellen Nestor Myers. She lived her early life in the Ben Bush, W.Va., area.

She attended school in the Thomas, W.Va., school system.

Her first husband, Ray William Peterson, died in 1944. They were married Oct. 26, 1929.

Her second husband, Clyde H. Horst, died in 1993. They were married Oct. 28, 1948.

She was a riveter and timekeeper for Fairchild Aircraft in Hagerstown from 1943 to 1961. She then was a school bus driver with Greencastle-Antrim School District, where she transported handicapped children to Franklin Learning Center in Chambersburg, Pa. She retired from the school district in 1985.

She attended Otterbein United Brethren Church in Greencastle.

She is survived by one daughter, Betty Catherine Kinsey of Greencastle; one son, Ray Peterson Jr. of Greencastle; four sisters, Virginia Belinc of New Jersey, Leona McClellan of LaVale, Md., Carol Cianfaglione of Painesville, Ohio, and Cecelia Bozeglav of Chardon, Ohio; one brother, Gary Myers of Madison, Ohio; 10 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by three sisters, Dortha Mazza, Sarah Peters and Margaret Myers; and two brothers, Marshall and Townsend Myers.

Services will be Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Otterbein United Brethren Church, 146 Leitersburg St., in Greencastle. The Rev. David G. Rawley will officiate. Burial will be in Broadfording Church Cemetery in Cearfoss.

The family will receive friends at Miller-Grove Funeral Home, 521 S. Washington St., Greencastle, today from 7 to 9 p.m.; and one hour prior to the service at the church on Tuesday.

Minnie M.S. Umberger

FORT LOUDON, Pa. - Minnie Mae Snyder Umberger, 92, of 13366 Main St., and a resident of Manor Care Health Services in Chambersburg, Pa., died Saturday, Dec. 20, 1997, at Manor Care.

Born May 20, 1905, in Fort Loudon, she was the daughter of the late John and Earl Lottie Guyer Walck.

Her first husband, David W. Snyder, died in 1959.

She owned and operated Patsy's Place in Cove Gap for a number of years.

She was a past member of Fort Loudon American Legion 606.

She is survived by her husband, Larry Umberger, whom she married in 1972; one daughter, Betty Mellott of Fort Loudon; three sons, David Snyder Jr. of Dry Run, Pa., Robert E. Snyder of Chambersburg, and Tadd W. Snyder of Greencastle, Pa.; three sisters, Agnes Mowen, Bertha Mowen and Helen Millhouse, all of Greencastle; seven grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by five sisters and two brothers.

Services will be Tuesday at 1 p.m. at Kelso-Cornelius Funeral Home, 6492 Lincoln Way West in St. Thomas, Pa. The Rev. Belvy White will officiate. Burial will be in Spring Grove Cemetery in Lemasters, Pa.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home today from 7 to 9 p.m. For the convenience of friends the funeral home will be open from 2 to 9 p.m. Friends also will be received at the funeral home one hour prior to the service on Tuesday.
