ELMER J. BITTNER JR.
Elmer J. Bittner Jr., 55, of Seale, Ala., formerly of Latrobe, died Wednesday, June 14, 2000. He was born June 22, 1944, in Pittsburgh, a son of the late Elmer J. Sr. and Frances Rought Bittner. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Thomas. Survived by his wife, the former Mary T. Powell; and these children: Carl Munk, married to the former Rebecca Bash of Latrobe, Kerry Bittner of Delmont, Edgar Munk of Latrobe, Joseph, married to the former Terrie Brooks of Johnstown and Shawn of Johnstown; seven grandchildren; brothers , Stephen of Pittsburgh and George, married to Gloria of Florida; and a sister, Mary, married to William Simpson of Pittsburgh. Friends will be received Sunday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the JON A. MEESE FUNERAL HOME, Van Horn and Fifth streets, Seward, Pa., where a funeral service will be held Monday at 11 a.m. Private interment Unity Cemetery, Latrobe.

BROOK ALAN BURKHART

Brook Alan Burkhart, 26, of Latrobe, died Saturday, June 17, 2000, at home. He was born April 22, 1974, in Latrobe, a loving son of Karl F. Jr. and Linda Kay (Stile) Burkhart of Latrobe RD4. He worked for Donegal Construction, Unity Township. He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Youngstown, and the Youngstown VFD social club. He was a graduate of Greater Latrobe High School, Class of 1993, was a former district and state champion quadrunner racer, and was also a member of the AMA. He was preceded in death by his maternal grandmother, Oma (Mershon) Stile. In addition to his parents, he is survived by his brother, Shawn Burkhart and wife, Karen, of Bradenville; a nephew, Matthew Burkhart; a niece, Sarah Jane Burkhart; maternal grandfather, Walter W. Stile of Latrobe RD5; paternal grandparents, Karl F. Sr. and Anna (Hayes) Burkhart of Youngstown; his fiancee, Kristen Hoyman; and several aunts, uncles and cousins. Friends will be received at the GAUT-BACHA FUNERAL HOME INC., Pleasant Unity, Sunday from 7 to 9 p.m. and Monday from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. A blessing service will be held in the funeral home Tuesday at 9:20 a.m., followed by a Funeral Mass to be celebrated in Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Youngstown, at 10 a.m. with the Rev. Chad R. Ficorilli, O.S.B., and the Rev. Ralph Tajak, O.S.B., as concelebrants. Interment will follow in Unity Cemetery, Unity Township.

WILLIAM S. DAVENPORT

William S. Davenport, 76, of Blairsville RD3 (Derry Township), died Friday, June 16, 2000, at his home as the result of a fire. Son of Dr. Joseph M. Davenport and Lucille Etta Sutton Davenport, he was born Nov. 15, 1923, in Thomas, W.Va. Mr. Davenport was a member of the United Presbyterian Church, Blairsville, and the American Legion Post #407. He graduated from Salem High School, Salem, N.J., and from the University of New Mexico with a bachelor of science degree in mechanical engineering. Prior to retirement in 1982, he was employed by Westinghouse Electric Corp., Churchill, for 31 years, where he received the Westinghouse Order of Merit Award. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II. He is survived by his wife, Mary E. Himes Davenport, whom he married on Feb. 27, 1944; two sons , Brett S. Davenport and his wife, Sandra, of West Wheatfield Township and Richard L. Davenport and his wife, Linda, of Aliquippa; three daughters , Mrs. John (Betty Lou) Freeman of Eureka, Calif., Mrs. Paul (Tamara) Potwora of Ridgefield, Wash., and Mrs. Barry (Wendy) Smith, of Derry; 14 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and a sister, Mrs. Joan L. Stuart of Lynville, N.C. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Kevin William Davenport in 1957. There will be no visitation. A memorial service will be held at the convenience of the family. The RICHARD L. SHOEMAKER FUNERAL HOME, 49 N. Walnut St., Blairsville, is in charge of the arrangements.

HELEN C. FERRETTI

Helen C. Ferretti, 78, of Greensburg, died Saturday, June 17, 2000, in the Westmoreland Regional Hospital, Greensburg. She was born May 18, 1922, in Bovard, a daughter of the late Alfonso and Carmella Minyon Evangelista. She was a member of the Church of St. Paul, Greensburg, the Women's Interfaith Bowling League for 18 years, and was an avid bingo player. She is survived by her husband, Eugene A. Ferretti; and their children, Eugene and his wife, Linda Ferretti, of Erie, Anthony and his wife, Carol Ferretti, of Uniontown, Dennis and his wife, Mary Ann Ferretti, of Greensburg, Tina and her husband, James R. Ressler, of Greensburg and James and his wife, Sherrie Ferretti, of Hillsborough, N.J.; 11 grandchildren; a great-grandson; a brother, Eugene Evangelista of Greensburg; and two sisters , Mary Illich of Jeannette and Annette Baughman of Greensburg. Friends will be received at the BACHA FUNERAL HOME INC., 516 Stanton at Green streets, Greensburg, Sunday from 7 to 9 p.m. and Monday from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. A blessing service will be held in the funeral home Tuesday at 9 a.m., followed by a Funeral Mass to be celebrated at 9:30 a.m. in the Church of St. Paul, Greensburg, with the Rev. Leonard W. Stoviak as celebrant. Interment will follow in the Westmoreland County Memorial Park, Hempfield Township.

ALLAN F. FLETCHER JR.

Allan F. Fletcher Jr., 53, of Levelgreen, died Saturday, June 17, 2000. Son of Beatrice M. (Harvey) Fletcher and the late Allan F. Fletcher; and brother of Janice A. DiVito of Trafford, Virginia Solar of North Huntingdon, Mirriam "Cookie" Mattern of Levelgreen, Jerry L. Geyer of Levelgreen, George H. Fletcher of Nevada, Darlene K. LaLiberte of Mt. Pleasant and Leslie L. Costelnock of Harrison City. Allan was a Vietnam veteran. Friends received Sunday from 6 to 9 p.m. and Monday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the WM. O. PEARCE FUNERAL HOME INC., 318 Wall Ave., Pitcairn, where services will be held Tuesday at 11 a.m.

ROBERT GRIMM

Robert Grimm, 74, of Stahlstown, died Friday evening, June 16, 2000, in Latrobe Area Hospital. He was born Sept. 15, 1925, in Melcroft, a son of the late McKinley and Mary Thedrow Grimm. He was a member of Fairmont Church, Cook Township, and was retired from Union Local #66 as a heavy equipment operator. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by five brothers , Dale, Harold, Raymond, Eugene and Wilbur Grimm. He is survived by his wife, Anna May Roadman Grimm; eight children: Robert I. and his wife, Judy, of Waterford, Victor C. and his wife, Loretta, of Stahlstown, Sandra L. and her husband, William Roadman Jr., of Ligonier RD4, William T. and special friend, Kathy Siemone, Dennis W. and his wife, Barb, of Latrobe, Peggy A. Umbaugh and friend, Jess Levis, of Stahlstown, Linda M. and her husband, Gerald Roadman, of Ligonier RD4 and Terry L. and his wife, April, of Stahlstown; 18 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and two sisters , June Fisher of Rockwood and Helen Brown of Acme. The family will receive friends at the L. BOYD SNYDER FUNERAL HOME INC., Church Street, Donegal, Sunday from 7 to 9 p.m. and Monday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Services will be held Tuesday at 11 a.m. in the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Chad Somerville officiating. Interment will be in Stahlstown Cemetery, with military services by the local veterans organizations. ERNEST S. HARSHMAN

Ernest S. "Pete" Harshman, 70, of Dickerson Run, died Friday, June 16, 2000, at his home. He was born July 2, 1929, in Dickerson Run, a son of the late Ernest and Georgia Newmeyer Harshman. He was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church, Connellsville, VFW Post #7781 of Scottdale, and a veteran of the Korean conflict. He was a retired employee of U.S. Steel, Irvin Works. Surviving are his wife, Betty Cumberland Harshman; four children, Susan Harshman of Scottdale, Elizabeth "Tibby" Harshman Trump and husband, Keith, of South Connellsville, Michael Harshman at home and Cathy A. Harshman Mongeluzzo and husband, John, of Connellsville; four grandchildren, Erica Basinger and husband, John, Kyle Trump, David Voda and Stephen Andursky; a great-granddaughter, Alexandra Nicholson; three brothers , Donald "Doc" Harshman of Dickerson Run, George "Bubby" Harshman of Connellsville and David Harshman of Connellsville; and a sister, Dorothy Mann of Dickerson Run. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers , Eugene and Charles Harshman. Friends will be received at the RALPH E. GALLEY FUNERAL HOME, Dawson, Sunday from noon to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m., Monday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. and Tuesday until 11 a.m., the hour of service at the funeral home with the Rev. Robert Moskowitz as officiating minister. Interment Dickerson Run Cemetery.

SARA E. LOWEECEY

Sara E. Loweecey, 69, of Jeannette, died Thursday, June 15, 2000, in the Monsour Medical Center, Jeannette. She was born June 16, 1930, in Jeannette, the daughter of the late Habeb Phillip and Ethel E. Swank Loweecey. She worked for many years as office manager for Dr. Roy Monsour. She was a graduate of the Jeannette High School Class of 1948, and the University of Pittsburgh. She was a member of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, Jeannette, the Friendship Card Club and the Monsour Ladies Auxiliary, and was a former member of the Jeannette Business and Professional Women's Club. She was instrumental in the fund-raising and development of the Monsour Medical Center. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers , Charles and Edward Loweecey. She is survived by a brother, Paul D. Loweecey of Syracuse, N.Y.; and a number of nieces and nephews. Friends will be received at the MASON-GELDER FUNERAL HOME INC., 201 N. First St., Jeannette, Friday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. A funeral service will be held Saturday at 10 a.m. in Holy Trinity Lutheran Church with Pastor Daniel R. Defassio officiating. Interment will follow in Jeannette Memorial Park, Penn Township. Memorial donations may be made to Monsour Medical Center Auxiliary, 70 Lincoln Way East, Jeannette, PA 15644, or the Jeannette Public Library, Magee Avenue and South Sixth Street, Jeannette, PA 15644.

WILLIAM SHULA

William Shula, 82, of Claridge, died Friday, June 16, 2000, in Jeannette District Memorial Hospital. He was born July 17, 1917, in Claridge, a son of the late Louis and Pauline Schallinger Shula. Prior to retirement, he was employed as a coal miner for the Renton Coal Co. He was a member of St. Barbara Church, Harrison City. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, a member of the Bushy Run American Legion Post #260 and the Slovenian Home, both of Claridge, and the Penn Township Senior Citizens. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers , Louis and John Shula; and three sisters , Mary Supancic, Pauline Lazar and Rose Rednock. He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Rose Radez Shula; and a daughter, Diane Shula of Claridge. Friends will be received at the JAMES E. LINDSAY FUNERAL HOME INC., Main Street, Harrison City, Sunday from 7 to 9 p.m. and Monday from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated Tuesday at 1 p.m. in St. Barbara Church with the Rev. V. Paul Fitzmaurice as celebrant. Interment will follow in St. Barbara Cemetery, Penn Township. A vigil service will be held Monday at 8:30 p.m. in the funeral home.

ELIZABETH M. STEINDL

Elizabeth M. Steindl, 106, of Connellsville, died Friday, June 16, 2000, at Harmon House, Mt. Pleasant. She was born Jan. 15, 1894, in Mill Run, a daughter of the late Frank and Mary (Rosenecker) Steindl. Elizabeth was a member of the Immaculate Conception Roman Catholic Church, Connellsville. She was employed for many years as an elevator operator for the Pittsburgh Chamber of Commerce. She is survived by a brother, George Steindl of Elizabeth; four nieces; and three nephews. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers , Frank and William Steindl; and three sisters , Emma Grindel, Theresa Huey and Rose Steindl. Friends will be received Sunday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and 4 to 9 p.m. at the PAUL G. FINK FUNERAL HOME INC., 418 N. Pittsburgh St., Connellsville, where a blessing service will be held Monday at 9 a.m., followed by a Funeral Mass at 9:30 a.m. in the Immaculate Conception R.C. Church, Connellsville, with the Rev. Father Michael Sciberras as celebrant. Interment will follow in St. Joseph R.C. Cemetery, Connellsville. A parish wake service will be held Sunday at 1:30 p.m.

RUTH E. TIERNEY

Ruth E. Tierney, 96, of Penn Township, formerly of Providence R.I., and Fairfield, Calif., died Saturday, April 29, 2000, in her home. She was born May 20, 1903, in Providence, R.I., a daughter of the late James S. and Elizabeth Jacobs Murray. She was a retired registered nurse at Lying Inn Hospital, Providence. She was a member of the Community United Methodist Church, Harrison City, and the Fairfield United Presbyterian Church, Fairfield, Calif. She was a foster mother for 21 teen-age boys in Providence, where she lived for 64 years. She was a member of the Second Presbyterian Church, the Business and Professional Women, the Oddfellows I.O.O.F., Foster Parent Program, and worked in Miriam McAlphine and Lying Inn Hospital (now Women's and Infants Hospital) in Fairfield, Calif., where she lived for 24 years. She was a deaconess and shepherdess, as well as Ruth Circle at Fairfield United Presbyterian Church. She was a member of the Business and Professional Women and the Suicide Prevention Hotline. She established the Extended Family Holiday Outreach of F.P.C., including Bluebirds (Scouts), to minister at Sunny Acres and other nursing homes. She taught crafts as volunteer outreach to teens from troubled homes in Pride House Facility from 1973 to 1983. She worked as a registered nurse volunteer at David Grant Air Force Base Hospital, the Fairfield Community Hospital and Sunny Acres Convalescent Home until 1975, and was a resident nurse at Senior Manor Village from 1970 to 1991. In Penn Township, where she lived the last nine years, she was a volunteer grandma for the ARC Play Group for the Community United Methodist Church, a member of the Penn Township Senior Citizens, the Young at Heart and the Homemakers. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph Patrick Tierney Sr.; two sons , Joseph Patrick Tierney Jr. and James Ronald Tierney; a brother, James Fred Murray; four sisters , Edith Murray, Mary Sutcliffe, Bertha Murray and Doris Murray; and beloved in-laws, Anna Burke, May Barrett and Pete Tierney. She is survived by a daughter-in-law, Laura Faith Ramage Tierney Bock and husband, James, of Penn Township; a brother, Ronald E. Murray and wife, Evelyn, of Coventry, R.I.; beloved in-law, Rose Arnold of Providence, R.I.; five grandchildren, James Michael Tierney, Rene' Michelle Tierney, Steven Christopher Bock, Shawn Patrick Tierney and Brenda Suzanne Bock; three great-grandchildren, Ellen Baylies Tierney, William Brewster Tierney and Katherine Elizabeth Bock; two foster children still in contact, Paul Robillard and Carl Cromwell; extended family, Bill and Shari Witt, Judy Baker and families, Smilie and Betty Ferrari, Lorraine Nelson, Don and Evon Acker; and numerous nieces and nephews. A memorial service to celebrate her life will be held Saturday, June 24, at 11 a.m. in the Community United Methodist Church, Harrison City, with the Rev. Dale Smith officiating. An additional memorial service will be held Monday, June 26, at 4 p.m. in the Fairfield United Presbyterian Church, Fairfield, Calif., with the Rev. Bill Witt officiating.

EDWARD BAJGIER

Edward Bajgier, 83, of Mt. Pleasant and Oakland, died June 16, 2000. He was born Sept. 16, 1916, in Pittsburgh. He was a drill press operator for Westinghouse Corp., East Pittsburgh. Mr. Bajgier was a member of Visitation Roman Catholic Church of Mt. Pleasant. Mr. Bajgier was also a veteran of World War II, having served in the U.S. Army. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Sefcik Bajgier, on June 3, 2000; his parents, Antoni Bajgier and Antonina Smolen; his children, Janet Bajgier Letki in 1996, Rita Bajgier in 1997, and Steve Bajgier in 1999; and a brother, Walter Bajgier. He is survived by his loving family: seven grandchildren; his brothers , Joseph and Edwin Bajgier, both of Turtle Creek; and his sister, Mary Olsen of East McKeesport. There will be no public hours of visitation. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated Tuesday at noon in the Visitation Roman Catholic Church, Mt. Pleasant, with Father Michael W. Matusak as celebrant. Interment will follow in the Visitation Parish Cemetery, Mt. Pleasant. Arrangements by GALONE-CARUSO'S, Mt. Pleasant.

PAMELA CARNATHAN

Pamela Carnathan, 74, of Jeannette, died Saturday, June 17, 2000, at home. She was born June 13, 1926, in Chaderaka, India, a daughter of the late William and Dorothy Banford Bone. Prior to retirement, she worked as a painter for Millstein Industries, and at the food court in Greengate Mall. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Jeannette. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, George Bone. She is survived by her husband of 55 years, Leonard W. Carnathan; two sons , Edward and his wife, Janice, of Carlsbad, N.M., and John and his wife, Cheryl, of Jeannette; five grandchildren, John Jr. and his wife, Jane, of Squirrel Hill, Edward of N.M., Amy Calderon and her husband, Jerry, of Carlsbad, N.M., Brian and his wife, Brandi, of Plum and Matthew and his wife, Brooke, of San Diego, Calif.; three great-grandchildren, Ashley and Zachary Calderon and Caleb Carnathan; two brothers , Eric and Basi Bone, both of England; a sister, Nora Steele of England; and a number of nieces and nephews. Friends will be received Monday and Tuesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the MASON-GELDER FUNERAL HOME INC., 201 N. First St., Jeannette. A funeral service will be held Wednesday at 1 p.m. in the funeral home with Pastor Dale W. Roddy officiating. Interment will follow in Jeannette Memorial Park, Penn Township.
