Kenneth R. Partridge

Kenneth Robert Partridge, 63, a resident of the Manor Care Nursing Home, Jersey Shore, died Friday, May 11, 2007 at the nursing home.

He was born Sept. 27, 1943 in Coudersport, the son of Robert A. Partridge, of Shinglehouse, and the late Helen Shneible Partridge.

He was a graduate of the Western Pennsylvania School for Blind Children in 1962 where he was president of his class. Thereafter he studied cafeteria management prior to starting his business career. He was a member of the Elks, and Loyal Order of Moose Lodges, and board director of the Lions Club, all of Lock Haven. At Manor Care Nursing Home he was the Resident Council Spokesperson. He was a member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Lock Haven.

He owned and operated a cafeteria business in Philipsburg and then in Lock Haven from the early 1960’s until his retirement due to health issues in 1982. Mr. Partridge, who was born with cerebral palsy and was 96 percent blind throughout the time he operated his business, refused a blind pension from the state when he turned 21 because of his pride in his ability to support himself. He started operating his cafeteria business in Lock Haven at Bobbie Brooks Inc. in 1967 and continued with that business at Champion Parts Rebuilders until his retirement. Since 1982, when his physical disabilities no longer allowed him to operate his business, he has been a resident of the nursing home.

Mr. Partridge was honored as “Pennsylvania Rehabilitant of the Year” in 1970 by the US Department of Health, Education and Welfare, and late the same year he was honored as “Pennsylvania Handicapped Person of the Year” by the Pennsylvania Governor’s Committee on Employment of the Handicapped. He was further nominated as Pennsylvania’s nominee for the national equivalent of Rehabilitant of the Year. In 1975 he was honored as the Clinton County Exceptional Achiever by the county CARE program.

But perhaps more telling of Mr. Partridge’s life is the inscription on an award he received for his distinguished service to the Lock Haven Lion’s Club in 1975 upon the 35th anniversary of the club. His award was inscribed “Kenneth Partridge, You Are An Inspiration to Your Friends and Community”. And for all who knew him during his years operating his business, socializing with friends in the Lock Haven community, and then as a resident of the nursing home for the past 25 years, he modestly and with a loving heart, inspired all with his courage, good nature and love of life.

In addition to his  Father, he is survived by his stepmother, Carolyn Partridge of Shinglehouse; two brothers, Scott F. of Houston, Texas and Richard S. of Boulder, Colo.; one niece, Lindsay H. Forscht of Houston; and one nephew, Ryan K. Partridge of Boulder.

The funeral mass will be Saturday, May 12, at 1 p.m. at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Lock Haven, with the Rev.  Father Daniel J. O’Neill officiating. Burial will be in St. Joseph’s Catholic cemetery, Cincinnati. Friends will be received on Saturday from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Moriarty-Dutcavich Funeral Home, 112 E. Church St., Lock Haven.

Memorial contributions may be made to Susquehanna Hospice, or the Activity Fund at Manor Care Nursing Home, Jersey Shore.
