He was born May 20, 1914, in Harrisburg, Ill., a son of the late Blaine A. Sr. and Matilda (Pritchard) James. He and the former Emma C. Dewald were married Oct. 20, 1936, by the Rev. Heber W. Becker at Christ Memorial Episcopal Church, Danville. They were married for 64 years before her death Dec. 11, 2000.
He was a 1932 graduate of Danville High School. Mr. James was employed at Hayden Chemical Co., later Merck & Co., Riverside, and spent many years in sales and worked with the Redevelopment Authority of Montour County as a property manager. He was also a real estate broker affiliated with Booth and Deutsch of Danville for 17 years before retiring. He was a life member of the Loyal Order of the Moose Danville, a life member of the Danville Elks 754, last of the founding members of the Liberty Township Fire Company and a member of the Montour County Historical Society. Mr. James was a member of Christ Memorial Episcopal Church, Danville, where he served on the vestry. Surviving are one daughter and son-in-law, Ann E. and Philip A. Mantz of Palm City, Fla.; one grandson, James R. Ovens of Middlesex, N.J.; one brother and sister-in-law, the Rev. Charles P. and Helen James of Marietta; two sisters-in-law, Mary T. James of Danville and Eugenia D. Freas of Lewisburg; nieces; and nephews. He was preceded in death by one brother, Robert I. James, and one sister, Elizabeth James.
Visitors may call from noon to 1 p.m. Friday at Christ Memorial Episcopal Church, East Market and Church streets, Danville, where a Requiem Mass will be celebrated at 1 p.m. by the Rev. Frank A. Emands. Burial will be in the Episcopal cemetery, Danville. The family will provide the flowers. Contributions may be made to Christ Memorial Episcopal Church, 120 E. Market St., Danville, PA 17821.
Funeral arrangements were by the Miller-Visneski Funeral Home, 10 W. Mahoning St., Danville.
GEORGE BURGESS, JR.
George W. Burgess Jr., 90, of Dock Woods, formerly of North Wales, died Monday, Oct. 1, 2007 in Dock Terrace, Towamencin Twp. George was preceded in death by his wife J. Elizabeth “Betty” Burgess.
He was a retired locomotive engineer of 39 years from the Reading Railroad.
He was a member of the Masonic Temple and The Shriners LuLu Temple Oriental Band. He was also Asst. Scout Master Troop 184, North Wales. He enjoyed playing golf.
He is survived by his son George W. Burgess III of Harleysville; two daughters, Beth Ann Fabrio of King of Prussia and Renee Cunningham of Pittsfield; five grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
In addition to his wife he was preceded in death by a daughter Winna Mae.
A Memorial service will be held Tuesday, Oct. 16, at 11 AM, in the Church of the Messiah, DeKalb Pike, Gwynedd. Relatives and friends are invited after 9:30 AM. Interment will be in Church of the Messiah cemetery. In lieu of flowers donations to Church of the Messiah, PO Box 127, DeKalb Pike, Gwynedd PA 19436 would be appreciated.
