Pennsylvania Obituary and Marriage Records, 1947-2010

KENNETH CLAYTON

Kenneth B. Clayton, 69, of Colmar, passed away May 17, 2008 in Golden Living Center in Lansdale.

Born in Lansdale, he was the son of the late Byron P. Clayton, Sr. and the late Erma (Wheachter) Clayton Myers.

Mr. Clayton served in the U.S. Army and had a career of 29 years with Stout brothers Co., Inc., Colmar, where he worked in shipping and receiving until retiring in August, 2003.

His hobbies included fishing, cars, sports and playing the lottery

Surviving are four brothers, Paul Clayton and his wife, Joan, of Colmar, William Clayton and his wife, Sharon, of Lansdale, Ralph Clayton and his wife, Beatrice, of Hatfield and John Clayton and his wife, Mary, of Lansdale; and two sisters, Margaret Quinn of Colmar and Joan Wimmer and her husband, Richard, of Gloucester City, NJ. Also surviving are four stepsisters, Elizabeth Ford, Margie Corrado, Dorothy Cardell and Edythe Griffith; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by three brothers, Richard R. Clayton in 1997, Byron P. Clayton, Jr. in 1999 and James Clayton, as a youth; and a brother-in-law, Walter Quinn in 1990.

Relatives and friends may greet the family Thursday, May 22 after 10:30 AM in the Huff & Lakjer Funeral Home, Lansdale and are invited to attend his memorial service at 11 AM. Interment will be in Indiantown Gap National cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to either Central Montgomery Medical Center, 100 Medical Campus Drive, Lansdale, PA

19446 or Asera Care Hospice, 690 Stockton Drive, Ste. 100, Exton, PA 19341.

THE REV. LORING WILKINS

The Rev. Loring Peabody Wilkins, 84, a longtime resident of Elm Terrace Gardens, Lansdale, died May 16, 2008. His wife, the late Thelma (Bentley) Wilkins, whom he married Sept. 2, 1945, died Jan. 9, 2008.

Born in Beverly, MA and raised in Worcester, MA, he was the son of the late Melville Otis and Beatrice (Dodge) Wilkins. He graduated from the Worcester High School of Commerce in 1941, attended Moody Bible Institute in Chicago and then graduated from Gordon College in 1947 and Gordon Theological Seminary in 1952.

Loring was a member of First Baptist Church in Lansdale and served as the chaplain of Elm Terrace Gardens for several years. He served several New England Churches as well as becoming a chaplain in the U.S. Navy Reserves, when he served 8 ˝ years on active duty. He served several chapels in many different locations during his service. Prior to moving to Elm Terrace Gardens he was chaplain at Christ’s Home in Warminster for 12 years.

Surviving are two sons, Tyler B. Wilkins and his wife, Beverly, of Plymouth, NH and Art G. Wilkins and his wife, Connie, of Tempe, AZ; a daughter, Sharon W. Barone and her husband, The Rev. Robert W. Barone, of Carthage, NY; nine grandchildren; three great- grandchildren; and a niece in Bristol, NH.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend his funeral May 26, at 10 AM in Elm Terrace Gardens, 660 N. Broad St., Lansdale, where friends may call after 9:30A.M. Interment will be in Christ’s Home cemetery, Warminster. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to First Baptist Church, 700 N. Broad St., Lansdale, PA 19446. Arrangements are by Huff & Lakjer Funeral Home, Lansdale.

PATRICK IRVIN

Patrick J. Irvin, 21, of Souderton, died unexpectedly May 14, 2008 due to injuries he received from an auto accident in Wrightstown, NJ, where he had been living with family friends.

Born in Chandler, AZ, he was the beloved son of Tracy (Shaffer) Irvin of Souderton and Pastor Joseph F. Irvin of WI.

Patrick had been a proud member of the Volunteer Medical Service Corps of Lansdale and the Towamencin Volunteer Fire Company during his high school years.

In addition to his mother and  Father, he is survived by an uncle, Andrew Shaffer and his wife, Rita, of Jeffersonville; an aunt, Louise Shaffer of Green Lane; and seven cousins.

Relatives and friends are invited to greet the family Wednesday, May 21, between 2 and 2:45 P.M. in Trinity Lutheran Church, 1000 W. Main St., Lansdale and are invited to attend his funeral service at 3 P.M. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to either VMSC, P.O. Box 208, Lansdale, PA 19446 or Towamencin Volunteer Fire Co., P. O. Box 274, Kulpsville, PA 19443. Arrangements by Huff & Lakjer, Lansdale.

KEVIN NOLAN

Kevin J. Nolan, age 80, a longtime resident of Lansdale, died peacefully May 17, 2008, after a short illness.

Kevin was born in St. Mary’s, PA to Leonard and Theresa (Nist) Nolan. He graduated from Central Catholic High School and the University of Buffalo, going on to work as an accountant for several firms - including some in the Lansdale area. In addition, Kevin owned an employment agency in King of Prussia for many years.

Throughout his life, he had no greater joy than traveling to new and interesting places with his constant companion, Joan, his beloved wife of 47 years. Kevin visited all of the continents, with the exception of Antarctica, many times. He accumulated an extensive library, as a result of his intensive interest in reading and learning - with particular interest in classic literature, finance and history.

As a member of the U.S. Army, Kevin served in Korea. He was also a member of St. Stanislaus Church in Lansdale.

Kevin is survived by his wife, Joan, whom he married in 1961 in Eldred. He is also survived by his four children: daughter, Sharon Rigney and her husband, Michael, of Chalfont; son, Bruce Nolan and his wife, Christine, of Holmdel, NJ; son, Gary Nolan and his wife, Amy, of Yardley; and daughter, Laurie Nolan of Wayne, PA and Heidelberg, Germany. Also surviving Kevin are his brother, Rev. Fr. Justin Nolan, O.S.B. of Latrobe; sister, Myra Trgovac of St. Mary’s; and brother, Val A. Nolan and his wife, Judy, of Richardson, TX. Finally, he is survived by six grandchildren, Colleen, Michael, Melanie, Vanessa, Nolan and Jonathan, whom he dearly loved.

Services are private and at the convenience of the family. Arrangements are by Huff and Lakjer Funeral Home of Lansdale. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to St. Stanislaus Parish Center Fund, 51 Lansdale Ave, Lansdale, PA 19446.

WILLIAM SAWKA

William (Wasyl) Sawka, a resident of Hatfield for over 50 years, died Friday, May 16, 2008, at Hahnamann University Hospital in Philadelphia, Pa. He was 89.

Born in Ukraine, he and his late wife Patricia (Pukesch) emigrated to the United States after World War II and settled in Philadelphia before moving to Hatfield in the early 1950's.

Mr. Sawka was a veteran of the French Foreign Legion during WWII fighting in North Africa. He was a skilled shoemaker by trade but retired as a maintenance worker for Teleflex Inc.

He loved children and was a very charitable person who was devoted to his church.

His viewing will be held Wednesday, May 21, 9AM at Presentation of Our Lord Ukrainian Catholic Church, 1564 Allentown Rd., Lansdale. Requiem Liturgy will be celebrated at 10AM. Burial will follow in St. Mary's Ukrainian Catholic cemetery, Elkins Park. In lieu of flowers, donations in William's memory may be made to his church. Arrangements are by Fletcher-Nasevich Funeral Home, Phila.

MARGARET TAYLOR

Margaret M. (Rockenstein) Taylor of Souderton died May 16, 2008. She was the wife of Charles Richard Taylor; mother of Richard Taylor and his wife, Diane, Donna Gresko and her husband, Mike, and Kathleen Altomare and her husband, Vince. She is also survived by eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, 11 A.M., at William R. May Funeral Home, Main Street and Elm Avenue in North Wales. Relatives and friends are invited to the funeral home Tuesday after 10 A.M. Interment will be in Whitemarsh Memorial Park. Donations in her name to North Penn Hospice, 51 Medical Campus Drive, Lansdale, PA 19446 would be appreciated.

VERNA HOFFMASTER

Verna Heisey Hoffmaster, 92, died May 16, 2008 at Dock Community, Lansdale, where she resided the last 17 years.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 68 years, Lester E. Hoffmaster, a daughter Sandra Fay and a great-grandson.

She grew up in Lebanon County and lived in Lancaster County and Norristown. She graduated from South Lebanon High School and Millersville University.

She taught elementary education in Lebanon, Cocalico Union and Norristown School Districts.

Verna was an avid quilter donating many quilts to charity and family members.

Verna is survived by children, Connie Place and her husband, David, David Hoffmaster and his wife, Mary Lou, Linda Miller and her husband, Mervyl, James Hoffmaster and his wife, Karen, Nancy Hamill and her husband, William Jr. and Janet Ikoniak and her husband, Joseph; 18 grandchildren; 17 great grandchildren; and two sisters-in-law, Esther and Hilda Heisey.

She was preceded in death by her four brothers and three sisters.

A memorial service will be held at Dock Woods Community Chapel, Woods Drive, Towamencin, Friday, May 23 at 10AM, followed immediately by private interment at Midway Church of the Brethren cemetery in Lebanon Co.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the Ambler Church of the Brethren, 351 E. Butler Ave., Ambler, PA 19002. Arrangements are with Huff & Lakjer Funeral Home, Lansdale.

MICHAEL VARGO
Michael A. Vargo, 50, died unexpectedly at his home in Lansdale, May 14, 2008.

MADELINE DAVID

Madeline R. David, 79, a resident of Lansdale since 1980, formerly of Ambler and North Wales, died in her home May 16, 2008. She was preceded in death by her husbands, Herbert Laird Sr. and Wylie David.

Born in Lansdale she was a daughter of the late William and Madeline (Fry) Mazzoni and attended St. Stanislaus School.

Mrs. David was a security guard for 25 years and was devoted to her employment working as long as she could until this February.

Her family remembers her as a cherished mother and grandmother who loved children, animals, medical information, belly dancing and life!

Surviving are five children, Herbert Laird Jr., Bedminster, Patricia Laird, Norristown, Sarah and Donna Laird, Lansdale and James Laird, Quakertown; six grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Catherine Pohle, Lansdale and Janie O’Brien and her husband, John, of Hatfield.

She was preceded in death by a daughter, Diane Miller in 1985.

In lieu of flowers donations in her memory may be sent to either an animal rescue or the American Cancer Society. Funeral arrangements are private through Huff & Lakjer Funeral Home, Lansdale.

DOROTHY SACKS

Dorothy G. “Dot” Sacks, 85, of Danville, and formerly of Woxall and East Greenville, died Thursday May 15, 2008 at Geisinger Medical Center in Danville. She was married to the late Wright L. Sacks.

She was born July 6, 1922 in Spring Mount, the daughter of the late George B. and Adelaide (Slemmer) Gebert. She graduated from Schwenksville High School in 1938 and Norristown Business College.

She was employed by the United States Postal Service as the Postmaster in Woxall for 27 years. She also owned and operated a general store in Woxall for many years.

Dot was an active member of the Tabor United Methodist Church in Hendricks for 57 years.

She enjoyed working in her garden, collecting coins and stamps and was an avid Scrabble player.

Dot was a member of the National League of Postmasters of the United States and served as vice president of the Pennsylvania State Branch.

She is survived by a son, Barry Sacks and his wife, Jackie, of Lederach; a daughter, with whom she resided, Donna Gutknecht and her husband, David, of Danville; ten grandchildren, Kristin, Andrew, Liesl, Brian, Branden, Lindsay, Kendall, Bernie, John and Joe; two great-grandchildren, Chelsea and Alex; two sisters, Beatrice Berger of Red Hill and Gloria Dry of Tyrone; and nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by three brothers, Kenneth, Lloyd and Donald Gebert; and one sister Margaret Gebert.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend funeral services, Monday May 19 at 1PM at the Tabor United Methodist Church, Hendricks, with her pastor the Rev. Alan J. Smith officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Friends will be received from 11AM until the time of service at the church. The family will provide flowers. Memorial contributions in her memory may be made to Tabor United Methodist Church PO Box 38 Woxall PA 18979.

ELIZABETH CORRADO

Elizabeth A. (Betsy) Corrado, 63 years old of Tucson, Arizona, formerly of Lansdale, died Wednesday, May 14th, 2008 after a long and valiant battle against diabetes and heart disease.

Preceded in death by her parents Alfred and Josephine Doppel. She was a graduate of North Penn High School, and Pierce Business School.

She is survived by her husband of 42 years, John A.;  daughters Susan Strobel (Scott) of Florence, AZ, Gina Myers of Perkasie, and Nicole Zeagman of Tucson, AZ; four grandchildren, Ryan and Katherine Strobel of Florence, AZ, Adrienne Zeagman of Tucson, AZ and Josephine Myers of Perkasie; brother and sister in-law John and Holly Doppel of Lenhartsville and sister Jane Weller of New Market, NH and many nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held Monday, May 19th, 2008 at the Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church, Tucson, AZ. In lieu of flowers, a charitable donation may be made in her memory to the American Heart Association or the Diabetes Association of America. Desert Sunset Funeral Home in Tucson is in charge of the arrangements .

VIRGINIA DeSANTIS

Virginia M. (Koffel) DeSantis, 85, of Souderton, went home to be with her Lord Monday, May 12, 2008 at Manor Care Health Services in Montgomeryville. She was the beloved wife for 62 years to William DeSantis.

She was born in Hatfield Twp., to the late Ralph and Mary (Wismer) Koffel.

Virginia was a waitress at the Blue Spruce Diner in Lansdale for many years.

She loved writing poems, writing to friends and family and had a special gift with cooking. Virginia and her husband, William, loved spending winters in Fort Pierce, FL.

She was a former member of Pennridge Full Gospel Tabernacle in Blooming Glen and a member of North Penn Christian Fellowship of Lansdale. Virginia was an avid Bible reader and was very active with bible studies and home fellowship groups.

In addition to her spouse, William, she is survived by a son, Daniel DeSantis of Souderton; a sister, Janet Gould of Roanoke, VA; two brothers, Robert Koffel and his wife, Paulette, of Lansdale and Ralph Koffel and his wife, Hazel of Newark, OH; and many nieces and nephews

Funeral services will be held Friday, May 16, at 11AM at Maranatha Assembly of God, 983 Allentown Road, Lansdale, PA 19446 where friends may meet with the family from 9 to 11 AM. Burial will take place at Hatfield Church of Brethren cemetery in Hatfield. Memorial contributions may be made to: Building Fund c/o North Penn Christian Fellowship, 1866 Fairgrounds Road, Hatfield, PA 19440.
