Pennsylvania Obituary and Marriage Records, 1947-2010

WENDELL A. HABERERN

Wendell A. "Bud" Haberern, died at Laurel House at Meadowood Thursday, October 18, 2001.
He was the husband of Elizabeth "Betty" (Mullins) Haberern, who he married Oct. 31, 1953.

Born Sept. 28, 1921 in Bullington, CT, a son of the John A. and Sarah L. (Cook) Haberern. He attended Duke University and graduated from Swarthmore College, Class of 1943. A U.S. Naval officer during WW II, he served aboard the destroyer "Hart" in the Pacific theater and was awarded three battle stars while serving in the Asia, Pacific and Philippine theaters.

Mr. Haberern entered the insurance field and established the Haberern Insurance agency of Doylestown in 1954. He served as the insurance committee chairman of the Central Bucks Chamber of Commerce.

He served as an elder for several Evangelical Presbyterian churches.

He was a member of the Albert R. Atkinson Post No. 210 of the American Legion and was one of the founders of the Buckingham Racquet Club.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by four sisters, Jacqueline Cashan of South Carolina, Rae Curtis of Collegeville, Barbara Maguire of Wall, NJ and Patricia Hargrove of Silver City, NM; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Merrill Haberern; and a sister, Althea Moorhead.

Funeral services will be Saturday, Oct. 27, at 11 AM at Covenant Presbyterian Church, Route 413 in Mechanicsville. There will not be a calling hour. Interment will be in Mechanicsville cemetery. He had a special interest in the Christian school movement, particularly Plumstead Christian School, and had asked that memorial contributions be given to the school, 5765 Old Easton Rd., Plumsteadville, PA 18949. Arrangements are by the Varcoe Funeral Home in Doylestown.

ELEANOR E. JAGO
Eleanor E. Jago, 79, of New Limerick, ME, went home to be with her Lord, October 21, 2001, surrounded by her family.

WALTER KURYLAK

Walter Kurylak, 93, of Richlandtown, formerly of Sellersville, died Saturday, Oct. 20, 2001 in Phoebe-Richland Health Care Center in Richlandtown.
He was the husband of the late Sarah (Daniels) Kurylak.

Born in Philadelphia, he was the son of the late Joseph and Catharina (Szagala) Kurylak. At the age of four his family moved back to Ukraine, where he lived until returning to Pennsylvania at the age of 22. He was fluent in three languages, English, Ukrainian and Polish.

He was a baker for Alderfers Bakery in Harleysville, before retiring in 1973. Prior to that, he worked for the former Koehler & Fretz Bakery in Lansdale and the former Yeakel's Bakery in Quakertown.

Mr. Kurylak was a member of St. Agnes Catholic Church in Sellersville.

He is survived by a son, Joseph Kurylak of Lansdale; three  daughters, Ann Mulhall of Quakertown, Catherine Charitas of Temecula, CA and Bernadette Lutterer of Perkasie; a sister, Mary Maksyn of Philadelphia; 12 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by three  daughters, Esther J. Myers, Sara Jane Moyer and Cecilia A. Rinehimer.

A Funeral Mass will be celebrated, Wednesday at 11 A.M. in St. Agnes Catholic Church, 445 N. Main St., Sellersville. Prior to the mass, family and friends may call Wednesday from 9:30 to 10:30 A.M. at the Jeffrey A. Naugle Funeral Home, 20 N. Ambler St., Quakertown. Interment will be in St. Agnes Catholic cemetery in Sellersville. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, 700 Horizon Circle, Suite 201, Chalfont, PA 18914.

ADELIA MOYER

Adelia (Evans) Moyer, 95, died Monday, Oct. 22, 2001, in Gwynedd Square Center, following a brief illness.
She was the wife of the late Leighton L. Moyer, who died in 1985. Formerly of the Germantown section of Philadelphia, she lived in Lansdale for many years.

Born in Newfield, NJ, she was a daughter of the late Frank and Mary (Nightengale) Evans.

Mrs. Moyer was a homemaker. Throughout her life, she had diversified interests.

She was a longtime member of St. John's United Church of Christ, and participated in the Women's Guild and at Manna on Main Street.

Surviving are a son, Leighton W. Moyer of Lansdale; a daughter, Beth M. Roberts of Fuzhou, Fujian, China; two grandchildren, David and Susan Roberts; one great-grandaughter, Maia Roberts; and a brother, Russell Evans of Wernersville.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a brother, Arthur Evans; and a sister, Muriel Cruze.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend her funeral service Thursday, Oct. 25, at 10 AM in the Huff & Lakjer Funeral Home, Lansdale, where friends may call after 9:30 AM. Interment , Whitemarsh Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, contributions in her memory may be made to St. John's U.C.C., 500 W. Main St., Lansdale, PA 19446.

JOHN PATRICK ROSNEY

John Patrick Rosney, 42, of Harleysville, died Oct. 19, 2001.
He was the husband of Donna M. (Troy) Rosney; the  Father of John Patrick Rosney Jr. and Jacqueline Patricia Rosney; and the brother of Eileen McDevitt.

Relatives and friends are invited to call Wednesday evening from 7 to 9 P.M. and to the funeral, Thursday at 9 A.M., at the Galzerano Funeral Home, 9304 Old Bustleton Ave., Philadelphia, PA 19115. The Funeral Mass will be at 10 A.M. at Maternity B.V.M. Church, 9220 Old Bustleton Ave., Philadelphia, PA 19115. In lieu of flowers, the family prefers donations to the Rosney Education Fund, c/o Donna Rosney.

HENRY P. WACK

Henry P. "Hank" Wack, 67, of Souderton, died late Sunday evening, October 21, 2001, at his residence following a long illness.
He and his wife, Charlotte Anne (Booz) Wack, celebrated their 46th wedding anniversary, Oct. 1. A resident of Hatfield for more than 20 years, he moved to his current address in Souderton in early 1955

Born in Hatfield, he was a son of the late Paul M. and Elizabeth B. (Ruth) Wack. A 1952 graduate of the former Hatfield High School, he received the highest honors and was class president. For the next eight years, he worked for various local contractors in the North Penn area. In 1961 he received a degree in architectural design and building construction from Temple University Evening School.

Mr. Wack was then employed as a draftsman by the former American Olean Tile Co. of Lansdale, where he became construction engineer and the company's manager of engineering administration in 1973. He was the holder of a patent for a ceramic tile panel construction, which provided a unique way of assembling a tile surround for a shower or bath. After 25 years of employment with American Olean Tile, he joined Happy Viking Furniture Store of Hatfield Twp. as manager of operations. In 1987, he formed and served as president of his own company, Unique Design and Planning Inc. of Souderton, which designed space planning for office environments.

Mr. Wack was a member of the Souderton-Telford Rotary Club for more than 25 years, where he served as secretary for many years and as president from 1986 to 1987. He served on many committees and was a Paul Harris Fellow twice. As a representative of the Rotary Club, he was a charter member of the Souderton Area Community Scholarship Fund Inc.

Always an avid reader, he was passionate about having a good library in the community. In 1978 he was appointed to the Indian Valley Public Library Board of Trustees, where he served as president for the past 23 years. In 1986, Mr. Wack spear-headed the move from the library's original site on Lincoln Avenue in Telford to the present location on Church Avenue in Telford. He oversaw the renovations of the original site and also the newer, more modern present facility. As president of the library board, he was the planning director for the expansion of the present facilities to include the computerization of the library's resource, referencing and technical services in 1996. He was the recipient of the Pennsylvania Library Trustee Award of 1989. Mr. Wack also served on the library's capital development committee, of which the carnival and Bowling for Books events were a few sources of revenue. He was a former president of the board of directors of the Chamber Arts Guild, formerly of Souderton and now of Doylestown, and a charter subscriber of the Lansdale Community Concerts Association.

He was an active member for more than 46 years of Zwingli United Church of Christ in Souderton, where he served on the church council, was a former youth advisor, chairman of the board of trustees and the board of deacons. He was a member of the building committee in 1976 during the renovation and expansion of the Sunday school and administration wings. In 1997 he designed the renovations of the choir loft and created the overall design for the lighting and cabinetry. Enjoying the love of woodworking, he built many of these designs from his workshop at home.

A member of the Souderton Area School Board for six years, he chaired the operations committee and was on the finance committee. He enjoyed environmental landscaping designs and received the National Wildlife Federation Certification of Backyard Wildlife Habitat at his residence.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by a son, Andrew P. Wack and his wife, Katrina S., of Millbrook, NY; two grandchildren, Liam Paul Wack and Hali Elizabeth Wack; two sisters, Ruth E. Wack of Hatfield and J. Phyllis Cessna of Glen Campbell; three brothers, Dennis L. Wack and his wife, Marcia, of Denver, CO, R. Donald Wack and his wife, Elsie, of Earlington and William C. Wack of Souderton.

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Catherine Elizabeth, who died at the age of six in April of 1964.

Interment will be private at the convenience of the family. Memorial services will be held Thursday, Oct. 25, at noon at Zwingli United Church of Christ, 350 Wile Avenue, Souderton, PA 18964. The family will receive friends at the church following the memorial service. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested memorials be made in his memory to the Indian Valley Library, 100 E. Church Ave., Telford, PA 18969 or to the Organ Fund of the above named church. Arrangements are by the David R. Sadler Funeral Home of Telford.

JAMES L. ESSER
James L. Esser of Souderton, died Monday, May 28, 2001, in Grand View Hospital, West Rockhill Twp. He was 51. He was the husband of Linda F. (Kissel) Esser. The couple had celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary June 21, 2000.

ELSIE GARRAHAN

Elsie Garrahan, 75, a lifelong resident of Hatfield, died Monday, May 28, 2001, in LifeQuest Nursing Home in Quakertown.
Born in Hatfield, she was a daughter of the late Frederick and Elsie (Doll) Hiller. She was a 1944 graduate of the former Hatfield High School and a member of the Hatfield Alumni Association.

Ms. Garrahan retired from Brooks Instrument in Hatfield.

She was a member of Grace Lutheran Church in Hatfield.

She had been a Girl Scout Leader and was one of the founders of the Hatfield Womens Civic Club. She was a charter member of the Hatfield Historical Society.

Ms. Garrahan enjoyed crafts.

Surviving are a son and daughter-in-law, James E. Garrahan III and his wife, Tonja, of Souderton; two grandchildren, Kari and Michael; two great-granddaughters; a sister, Margot H. Swartley and her husband, Lloyd W., of Lansdale; a niece and a nephew.

She was preceded in death by a daughter, Donna Hryhorsky Wiker in February, 1994; a son, Daniel F. Garrahan in June, 1994; and an infant daughter, Connie, in 1958.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend the service, Friday, June 1 at 11 A.M. in the Huff & Lakjer Funeral Home, Derstine and Cannon avenues, Lansdale, where friends may call between 10 and 11 A.M. Interment , Hatfield cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions in her memory may be made to Grace Lutheran Church, 25 W. Broad St., P.O. Box 57, Hatfield, PA 19440.

NEDY L. KNOLL

Nedy L. (Lipovoy) Knoll, age 80, of Hatfield Township, died Monday, May 28, 2001 at Grand View Hospital, West Rockhill Township.
Born in New Hanover Township, she was a daughter of the late Harry and Anna (Chason) Lipovoy. She had lived in Pottstown prior to moving to Hatfield thirty years ago.

She was a graduate of the former Norco High School, now known as the Owen J. Roberts High School in Pottstown.

Mrs. Knoll retired in 1986 from Leeds and Northrup. Prior to working for the company, she taught art at Wyncroft School in Pottstown.

Known as an area artist, most of her work was done in watercolors.

She is survived by a sister, Virginia Pomponio and her husband, Raymond, of Delaware; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a sister, Jenny Yates; and a brother, Jacob Lipovoy.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend her funeral service, Thursday, May 31, at 11 A.M., at Kligge Funeral Home Inc., 464 S. Main St. (Rt. 463) Hatfield. There will be a calling time from 10 A.M. Interment , Whitemarsh Memorial Park, Horsham Township.

JAMES MAIORANO

James Maiorano, 69, died unexpectedly, early Tuesday morning, May 29, 2001, at Grand View Hospital in West Rockhill Twp. He had been married for 40 years to the late Florence M. "Floss" (Feusner) Maiorano, who died in 1997. A lifelong resident of the Lansdale area, he had lived in Towamencin since 1959.
He was born in Souderton, a son of the late Samuel P. Maiorano and Bertha (Greaser) Maiorano Florentino. He graduated from the former Lansdale High School, Class of 1949.

As a younger man, he worked as a mason for the former Tony Bosico Pools in Lansdale. For more than 40 years, he was employed by J.L. Freed & sons Inc. in Lansdale. In addition, he serviced area swimming pools.

Surviving are a son, James Maiorano Jr. and his wife, Linda, of Window Rock, AZ; a daughter, Beth Maiorano Ritter and her husband, Ken, of Ledgewood, NJ; two grandchildren, James Maiorano III and his wife, Jill, and Jeremy M. Maiorano; and one great-grandson, James Maiorano IV. Also surviving are a sister, Betty Kriebel and her husband, Richard, of Lansdale; and a brother, Richard Maiorano and his wife, Joan, of Cody, WY.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend his memorial service, Thursday, May 31, at 7:30 P.M. in Family Worship Center, 1000 Troxel Road in Towamencin, where the family will greet friends after 6 P.M. In lieu of flowers, contributions in his memory may be made to either the American Cancer Society, 527 W. Butler Ave., Chalfont, PA 18914 of Precept Training Center, P.O. Box 5415, Window Rock, AZ 86515. Arrangements are by the Huff & Lakjer Funeral Home in Lansdale.

JOSEPH C. SCHERER

Joseph C. Scherer, 86, died Tuesday morning, May 29, 2001, in Gwynedd Square Center, Upper Gwynedd, where he had resided since November. He was the husband of Anne M. (Timlin) Scherer. Formerly of Philadelphia, he lived in Woodbury, NJ for more than 30 years before entering the nursing home.
Born in Philadelphia, he was a son of the late Charles A. and Anne (Dixon) Scherer. He graduated from West Catholic High School, Class of 1932, and continued his education at the Philadelphia Police Academy.

He worked as a police officer for the City of Philadelphia until retiring from the force in 1968. Following that, he was employed by the former Moore Products in Spring House for nine years, retiring in 1979. He was a member of the Fraternal Order of Police

Mr. Scherer was a member of St. Patrick's Church in Woodbury and the Holy Name Society.

Surviving, in addition to his wife, are two sons, Joseph H. Scherer and his wife, Marcia, of North Wales and Thomas M. Scherer and his wife, Veronica, of Quakertown; eight grandchildren; one brother, Francis J. Scherer and his wife, Betty, of Durham, NC; and a sister, Anne McQuire of Phoenixville.

Services are private. In lieu of flowers, contributions in his memory may be made to St. Patrick's Roman Catholic Church, 64 Cooper St., Woodbury, NJ 08096. Arrangements by the Huff & Lakjer Funeral Home in Lansdale.
