Louis Smith Williams Jr., 94
Louis Smith Williams Jr. died on November 29, 2007.
Louis Smith Williams Jr. was born in Philadelphia, on June 5, 1913, the oldest son of Lewis Smith Williams, of Coatesville and Jeannette Gibson, of Baltimore, Md. His younger brother Clarence Williams, born 1918, passed in 1977.
The Williams family was one of the oldest African-American families from Chester County. His great-grandmother, Rachel Jones Williams Potts, who died in 1902 at the age of 101 was fond of telling her close to 100 descendents stories of seeing General Lafayette and the building of the Pennsylvania railroad. Her  Father, James Jones, who died at the age of 112, was born in 1774.
Louis’ mother, Jeanette Gibson Williams, born in Baltimore in 1881, was the daughter of Idella Gibson, the owner of one of the first ladies dressmaking schools in that city. Born of Creole parents from Louisiana in 1861, Idella migrated to Baltimore from Galveston, Texas, after the end of the Civil War. She later relocated to Philadelphia, where her daughter met and married a handsome young waiter named Louis Smith Williams,  Father of Louis Jr.
Young Louis grew up in South Philadelphia, where he and his mother, who passed on in 1979, were longtime members of the First African Presbyterian Church. He attended South Philadelphia High School, where he developed a love of sports. He went on to enroll at Cheyney State, now Cheyney University; the oldest African-American institution of higher learning in the U.S. It was there that he met his wife of 67 years, Ella Mildred Roberts, who was born in East Orange N.J., but grew up in North Philadelphia.
They married April 14, 1938, a year after their graduation from Cheney.
Louis went to work for the Post Office, and worked there until he retired in March of 1969. He worked concurrently for many years for the State Liquor Stores.
An avid sports enthusiast, he followed Negro League baseball, attended the Penn relays for over 40 years and had season tickets to the Eagles for over 30 years. He played softball for the championship Post Office Federal League team.
After he retired in 1969, he and his beloved wife traveled extensively to Europe, and made yearly trips to Canada, up until the time of her death on June 2, 2005. One of their favorite vacation jaunts was visits to their beloved granddaughter Marcia in Minneapolis.
He is survived by his two children, Margo Jeanette Williams, and Louis Smith Williams III, his granddaughter Marcia Williams Wheelock, and his nephews and nieces; Clarence, Lynn, Donald, Judy and Karen Williams, their children, his adopted grandson Mark Wilkerson, Jr., his cousins, and his wife’s family members who all considered him to be their uncle, or brother.
He will be missed by all of us who loved him and called him by many names: “Dad,” “Pop,” “Pop-Pop” and uncle Louis. His friends and co-workers simply called him “Lou.” We know that he is happily reunited with his beloved Mildred and other dear family members who went before him. He is at home and at peace.
The funeral service will be held on Thursday, December 6th, at 11 a.m. The viewing will be from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. at the First African Presbyterian Church 4159 W. Girard Avenue Philadelphia, PA 19104.
