Pennsylvania Obituary and Marriage Records, 1947-2010

Jerry E. Houpt
Jerry E. Houpt, 62, of 405 E. Leitersburg St., Greencastle, died at 9:25 a.m. Wednesday, April 30, 2008 in the Washington County Hospital, Hagerstown, Md. He had been in failing health since February 2008.

Born January 14, 1946 in Antrim Township, he was the son of the late James W. and Mary Ellen (Provard) Houpt.

He had retired after 25 years of service with the former United Telephone Co. as an installer and repairman.

Mr. Houpt was a social member of the Harry D. Zeigler V.F.W. Post 6319 and the Frank L. Carbaugh American Legion Post 373, both of Greencastle. He was a member of the VFW horseshoe league.

He was a PIAA umpire in baseball and softball and also umpired games in the Little, Pony, Legion and adult leagues. He bowled in leagues at Nellie Fox in Chambersburg and Dual Lanes in Hagerstown.

His interests included listening to bluegrass music at the Arrow Horse in Gettysburg, hunting and raccoon hunting.

Mr. Houpt was a 1964 graduate of Greencastle-Antrim High School and he was a veteran of the Pennsylvania Army National Guard.

He and his wife, Virginia L. (Helfrick) Houpt, were married July 30, 1967 in Waynesboro.

Surviving family in addition to his wife are: two sons, Jerry L. Houpt of Chambersburg and Shane A. Houpt of St. Thomas; five sisters, Amy Rice, Gay Buchanan and Pam Clay, all of Greencastle, Nancy Keefer of Mercersburg and Betty Anderson of Pittsburgh; four brothers, David Houpt of Germany, James W. Houpt of Florida, Robert Houpt of West Virginia and Tom Houpt of Greencastle; and five grandchildren

Services were held the morning of Tuesday, May 6 in the Harold M. Zimmerman And Son Funeral Home, Greencastle, with Rev. Gayle L. Ruble Sr. officiating.

Burial was in the Parklawns Memorial Gardens in Chambersburg.

Memorial contributions to help defray funeral expenses may be given to Virginia Houpt, 405 E. Leitersburg St., Greencastle, PA. 17225.

George F. Kennedy Jr.
George Franklin Kennedy Jr., 70, of 640 Leitersburg Road, Greencastle, died at 2:50 p.m. Sunday, June 29, 2008 in his home. He had been in declining health the past several weeks.

Born July 30, 1937 in Chambersburg, he was the son of the late George F. Sr. and Sadie B. (Helman) Kennedy.

He was employed as a lathe and machine operator at Jerr- Dan Co., Greencastle, for 24 years and had previously worked at Grove Worldwide, Shady Grove, for 10 years and at John Oliver Homes, Hagerstown, Md., as a finish carpenter.

Mr. Kennedy attended the Otterbein United Brethren Church of Greencastle.

He was also a member of the Greencastle Sportsman Association and a member of the Loyal Order Of The Moose of Chambersburg.

Mr. Kennedy enjoyed hunting, fishing and riding ATVs with his grandchildren.

He and his wife, Rose A. (Jordan) Kennedy, were married May 19, 1984 in Winchester, Va.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by two step-sons, Robert D. (husband of Shelly) Wolfinger and Ralph G. (husband of Michelle) Wolfinger, both of Greencastle; a grandson, whom he helped to raise, Kurtis A. Wolfinger of Greencastle; four adopted grandchildren, Natasha Wolfinger Kennedy, Kristopher Wolfinger Kennedy, Kayla Wolfinger Kennedy and Bret A. Wolfinger Kennedy, all of Greencastle; a brother, Arthur G. (husband of Patricia A. ) Kennedy of Hagerstown, Md.; a sister, Carrie L. Summers of Frederick, Md.; seven grandchildren, Robert Wolfinger III, Elizabeth Simmers, Shelly Simmers, Tyler and Josh Simmers, Bryan Wolfinger and Damian Wolfinger; and a number of nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, George F. Kennedy III, on June 7, 1984 and by a sister, Ruth Mann.

Services were held the morning of Wednesday, July 2 in the Harold M. Zimmerman And Son Funeral Home, Greencastle with Rev. David G. Rawley officiating.

Burial followed in the Cedar Hill cemetery, Greencastle.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions to help defray funeral expenses may be made to Rose Kennedy, 640 Leitersburg Rd., Greencastle, Pa. 17225.

Henry H. Pittman
Henry H. Pittman, 90, a resident of Manor Care Health Services, Chambersburg, and formerly of Providence Place of Chambersburg, and 13775 Molly Pitcher Highway, Greencastle, died at 10:25 a.m. Tuesday, June 24, 2008 in Manor Care Health Services, Chambersburg.

Born May 18, 1918 in Mercersburg, he was the son of the late George H. and Cora E. (Hawbaker) Pittman.

He and his wife, Isabel (Crunkleton) Pittman, were married Aug. 7, 1939 in Hagerstown, Md. She died Jan. 9, 2001.

He was a truck driver for the former Bock Oil, Greencastle.

Along with his wife, he was the owner of Pittman's Western Wear, Greencastle.

Mr. Pittman was a member of the Grace United Church Of Christ of Greencastle.

He was a charter member of the Silver Star Saddle Club of Greencastle.

Mr. Pittman enjoyed working with leather and was a great story teller.

He is survived by a son, George H. Pittman of Greencastle; three grandsons; one granddaughter; three greatgrandsons; one great-granddaughter; three step greatgranddaughters; three step great-great-grandsons; and nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Betty Lou Poe; and two sisters, Mildred (Pittman) Schockey and Genevieve J. (Pittman) Beeler.

Services were held the afternoon of Friday, June 27 in the Harold M. Zimmerman & Son Funeral Home, Greencastle, with Chaplain Ronald Milley officiating.

Burial followed in the Cedar Hill cemetery, Greencastle.

The family requests that flowers be omitted and memorial contributions be made to the Grace United Church Of Christ, 128 E. Baltimore St., Greencastle, PA. 17225 or to the Heartland Home Health Care & Hospice, 1200 Walnut Bottom Rd., Ste. 302, Carlisle, PA. 17013.

Bertha E. Winsor
Bertha E. (Landis) Winsor, 93, of 35 Williamson Ave., Greencastle, died at 11:14 a.m. Monday, June 23, 2008 in the Waynesboro Hospital.

Born Nov. 30, 1914 in Antrim Township, she was the daughter of the late Rev. Edgar and Emma Grace (Kriner) Landis.

She was the wife of the late James F. Winsor. He died April 24, 1962.

Mrs. Winsor was a homemaker.

She was a member of the Shanks Church Of The Brethren, Greencastle.

Mrs. Winsor enjoyed sewing, especially making dolls, flowers and gardening.

She is survived by two  daughters, Martha L. (wife of John E. Sr.) Farrow of Greencastle and Betty G. (wife of Martin H.) Timmons of Mercersburg; two sons, Richard E. (husband of Madeline (Weaver) Winsor of Presque Isle, Maine, and Dennis R.Winsor of Greencastle; three sisters, Mabel Izer of Greencastle, Mary Rice of Chambersburg and Carrie Martin of Maugansville, Md.; 10 grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren; 23 greatgreat grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by a son, James W. Winsor; daughter in-law, Doris (Smith) Winsor; daughter, Donna F. Winsor; granddaughter, Diane E. Winsor- Witmer; infant brother, Elmer Landis; brothers, Martin Landis, Roy Landis and William Landis; sisters, Elva Landis, Ruth Martin and Dortha Long.

Services were held the morning of Thursday, June 26 at Shank's Church Of The Brethren, Greencastle, with Pastor David Stahl officiating.

Burial followed in the adjoining church cemetery.

In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to her great-grandson's family, The Shank Family, serving as missionaries in Liberia, West Africa, c/o Mount Rock Brethren In Christ Church, 22 Mount Rock Rd., Shippensburg, PA. 17257 or to the charity of one's choice.

Arrangements were handled by the Harold M. Zimmerman And Son Funeral Home, Greencastle.

Barbara J. Smith
Barbara J. (Gordon) Smith, 66, of 711 Fir Spring Drive, Waynesboro, died at 4:45 a.m. Sunday, Aug. 17, 2008 in her home. She was in failing health for the past two years and critically ill for the past week.

Born Jan. 22, 1942 in Fulton County, she was the daughter of the late Irvin William and Ella May (Miller) Gordon. She lived her early life in Hancock, Md.

Mrs. Smith graduated from Hancock High School with the Class of 1959.

She and her husband, Kenneth H. Smith, were married April 29, 1972 in Hagerstown, Md. Prior to moving to the present residence in August 2005, they lived in State Line, Pa.

Mrs. Smith retired from General Motors Corp. in Martinsburg, W.Va. in 1994.

She was a former member of Faith Christian Fellowship Church in Williamsport, Md., where she served on the Mission Board and the Hospitality Committee. She also attended Otterbein Church in Waynesboro.

She enjoyed sewing for Cumberland Valley Relief Center in Chambersburg

Mrs. Smith enjoyed sewing, cooking, baking, interior decorating, entertaining people and being around her family.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by two  daughters, Kathy L. Reid of Clear Spring, Md. and Lori A. Smith of Waynesboro; one son, Kevin L. Dicken of Bedford; one step daughter, Kelli S. Smith of Lugoff, S.C.; three grandchildren; one step-granddaughter; one great-grandson; a sister, Carol E. Robinson of Mercersburg; a brother, John I. Gordon of Berkeley Springs, W.Va.; and a number of nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by three sisters, Florence Ridenour, Lenora Neuhouser and Rosalie Everets; and four brothers, William "Bill" Gordon, Clarence "Bud" Gordon, Lester Gordon and Carl Gordon.

Services were held the morning of Wednesday, Aug. 20 in Grove-Bowersox Funeral Home, Waynesboro, with Rev. Paul A. Martin officiating.

Burial will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 21 at Stevens Chapel cemetery in Monroe Township of Bedford County near Mattie.

Robert E. Strang
Robert E. Strang, 58, of 6828 Furnace Road, Waynesboro, died at 12:09 p.m., Monday, Aug. 25, 2008. Death was unexpected and was the result of an industrial accident at Nitterhouse Concrete, Chambersburg.

Born March 17, 1950, he was the son of Harry E. Strang of Fayetteville, and the late B. LaRue (Scott) Strang. He was a life long resident of the South Mountain, PA and Waynesboro areas.

Mr. Strang graduated from Waynesboro Area Senior High School with the Class of 1969.

He served with the United States Marines.

He and his wife, Barbara J. (Wagaman) Strang, were married Oct. 21, 1978 in Wesley United Methodist Church, Mont Alto. They moved to their present residence in August 1979.

Mr. Strang worked for Knouse Foods as an orchard worker, Keystone Homes as a crew leader in the roofing department, Grove Worldwide as a fork lift operator and he was currently employed at Nitterhouse Concrete as an equipment operator for the past eight years.

He was a member of Eagles Club, Inc., Joe Stickell American Legion Post 15, Loyal Order of the Moose Lodge 1191, William Max McLaughlin V.F.W. Post 695 and Order of the Owls Nest 1073, all of Waynesboro, and the South Mountain Fish and Game Association.

Mr. Strang enjoyed hunting, fishing and spending time with his family.

In addition to his wife and  Father, he is survived by one daughter, Brandy L. Baker of Mont Alto; one sister, Linda S. Kendall of Waynesboro; and a number of nieces and nephews.

Services were held the morning of Saturday, Aug. 30 in Grove-Bowersox Funeral Home, Waynesboro, with Rev. David L. Keener, officiating.

Burial followed in Strang's cemetery, South Mountain.

Memorial contributions may be made to: The American Cancer Society, 384 Floral Ave., Chambersburg, PA, 17201.

Marian E. Heckman
Marian E. Heckman, 77, of Mercersburg Road, Mercersburg, died at 3:50 p.m. Sept. 11, 2008 in the Chambersburg Hospital, Chambersburg.

Born March 19, 1931 near Pinola, she was a daughter of the late Peter and Elizabeth Byers Horst.

She had been employed for 32 years as a seamstress at the former Stanley Company, Chambersburg.

Mrs. Heckman was co-owner of Light of Parnell Book Shop, Mercersburg.

She had attended Maugansville Bible Brethren Church of Maugansville, Md.

Mrs. Heckman was a member of Lemasters Community Center Auxiliary, Lemasters.

In addition to her husband, Nathan O. Heckman, whom she married May 19, 1949, she is survived by two  daughters, Sharon L. (Mrs. Michael) Shilling of Reading and Cheryl A. (Mrs. Paul) Mowen of Greencastle; two sons, Roger A. (husband of Nancy) Heckman of Houston, Texas and Wesley R. (husband of Karen) Heckman of Mercersburg; 10 grandchildren; and one great granddaughter.

In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by a daughter, Melissa Sue Heckman, who died Oct. 2, 1992; sisters, Thelma Baer, Elsie Mae Myers and Loueda Thomas; and a brother, B. Aden Horst.

Services were held the morning of Monday, Sept. 15 in Brandt's Church of the Brethren, St. Thomas, with Rev. John C. Hoffman officiating.

Burial was in Spring Grove cemetery, Lemasters.

Arrangements were handled by the Lininger-Fries Funeral Home Inc., Mercersburg.

Memorial contributions may be made to Young Life of Franklin County, 741 S. Coldbrook Ave., Chambersburg, PA 17201.

Alice L. Hartman
Alice Louise Hartman, 77, a resident of Homewood Retirement Home of Williamsport, Md. and formerly of Hagerstown, Md. died Wednesday afternoon, Sept. 17, 2008 in the nursing center.

Born March 1, 1931 in Franklin County, she was the daughter of the late Samuel S. and Nina A. (Dentler) Snider.

Mrs. Hartman was a registered nurse, having worked as an operating room nurse in hospitals in the Baltimore area and Charlottesville, Va.

She was a 1950 graduate of Greencastle High School and a graduate of the former Washington County Hospital School of Nursing of Hagerstown.

Mrs. Hartman was an active member of the Grace Brethren Church, Hagerstown, where she served as President and Missions Chairman of the Women of Grace. She also served on the church's missions committee, taught Sunday school, was a deaconess, worked in the church office and was a member of the Harvesters Sunday School Class.

Mrs. Hartman enjoyed being with her granddaughters.

She and her husband, Paul Edwin Hartman, were married Sept. 19, 1953 in the Macedonia United Brethren Church, Greencastle. He died Oct. 31, 2007.

She is survived by a son, Randall E. (husband of Joni) Hartman of Ellicott City, Md.; three granddaughters, Beth Anne Dunphy and husband Martin, Sarah Hartman and Rebecca Hartman; a sister, Jane Fetterhoff of Greencastle; and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by five brothers and three sisters.

Services were held the afternoon of Sunday, Sept. 21 in Grace Brethren Church, Hagerstown, with Rev. Harald Bjerga officiating.

Burial will follow in the Montgomery Brethren In Christ Church cemetery near Mercersburg.

Arrangements were handled by the Harold M. Zimmerman And Son Funeral Home, Greencastle.

Memorial contributions may be given to the Grace Brethren Church, 837 Spruce St., Hagerstown, Md. 21740 or to the Homewood Retirement Center Benevolent Fund, 16505 Virginia Ave., Williamsport, Md. 21795.
