Wilma Jean Wenger
Mrs. Wilma Jean (Stockslager) Wenger, 77, of 8988 Hades Church Road, Greencastle, died at 10:45 a.m., Sunday, Feb. 17, 2008 at Washington County Hospital, Hagerstown, Md.
Born Aug. 15, 1930 in Letterkenny, she was the daughter of the late Ralph and Mildred (Bovey) Stockslager. She was raised by her aunt and uncle, Lester and Elizabeth (Barnhart) Bovey, who also precede her in death.
Mrs. Wenger attended Greencastle High School.
She and her husband, Joel L. Wenger, were married Nov. 17, 1951 in Greencastle. They lived on Hades Church Road since their marriage.
Mrs. Wenger was employed as a seamstress by Stanley Company, Chambersburg, as a cafeteria worker for the Greencastle- Antrim School cafeteria and worked on the family diary farm for many years.
She was a member of Five Forks Brethren in Christ Church, Waynesboro, where she served as a Sunday School teacher, sang in the choir and participated in the Hospitality Committee.
Mrs. Wenger also served as past county president of Farm Women 4, Franklin County and as state director of Farm Bureau Farm Women's Committee.
She enjoyed cooking, gardening, flowers, sewing and time with her family.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by her daughter, Jody A. Hartman of Greencastle; three sons, Marlin L. Wenger and his wife Michelle, of Dearborn, Mich., Larson D. Wenger and his wife Marlene of Greencastle and Darwin M. Wenger of Greencastle; five grandchildren; two great grandchildren; two brothers, Franklin Stockslager of Greencastle and Marvin Stockslager; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her sister, Charlotte Stockslager.
Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 21 in Five Forks Brethren in Christ Church, 9244 Five Forks Road, Waynesboro, with Rev. Wilbur F. Besecker officiating.
Burial will follow in Brown's Mill cemetery, Kauffman.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 20 in Miller-Bowersox Funeral Home, 521 S. Washington Street, Greencastle.

Alma G. Kuhn
Alma G. Kuhn, 105, of 2236 Philadelphia Ave., Chambersburg, and formerly of North Sixth St., Chambersburg, died at 11 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 17, 2008 at Linda Wilson's Residential Care of Chambersburg.
Born Oct. 16, 1902 in Greencastle, she was the daughter of the late Russell S. and Sarah Belle (Wagner) Kuhn.
She has been a member of the Otterbein United Brethren Church of Greencastle since 1902, where she has taught Sunday School and sang in the choir.
She is a member of the Rhodes Grove United Brethren Camp Meeting Association and attended camp at Rhodes Grove for many years until 2004.
She enjoyed knitting and crocheting for her family, collecting and wearing hats, and for the past 25 years she has enjoyed visiting her great niece, Nancy Helman Stafford, in Tallahassee and Pensacola, Fla.
In her earlier years she worked in sales at the former Montgomery Ward, JC Penney, and the former Wonder Hat Shoppe, all of Chambersburg.
She is a 1921 graduate of the Greencastle High School.
She is survived by two nephews; three great nieces; and one great nephew.
She was preceded in death by five sisters, Viola Gift, Beulah Stumbaugh, Blanche Martin, Olive Senseny and Clema Kuhn; and two brothers McKinley Kuhn and Roy Kuhn.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 21 in the Otterbein United Brethren Church, 146 Leitersburg St., Greencastle, with Rev. David Rawley officiating.
Burial will be in the Cedar Hill cemetery, Greencastle.
It was Alma's request that there would be no public viewing.

Charles Tracy
Charles "Pappy" Tracy, 81, of South Carlisle St., Greencastle died at 2 a.m. Sunday, Feb. 17, 2008 in the home of his daughter on Rustic Tavern Road, Hedgesville, W.Va. Born March 5, 1926 in Smithsburg, Md., he was the son of the late Charles Orville and Alta Mae (Misner) Tracy.
Ruth E. Smith
Ruth Evelyn Smith, 81, a resident of the Quincy Retirement Home and formerly of Waynesboro and South Carlisle Street, Greencastle, died at 8:08 p.m. Saturday March 8, 2008 in the nursing home.
Born Jan. 8, 1927 in York, she was the daughter of the late Wesley and Lydia (Klinedinst) Smith
She and her sisters were orphaned at an early age and were placed in the Children's Aid Society Of Pennsylvania. Frances Leiter was an active member of the organization and took Ruth to raise in Greencastle.
Miss Smith was employed as a nurses aide for over 25 years in the maternity and nursery ward of the Chambersburg Hospital.
She was a member of the Waynesboro Church Of The Brethren where she was a member of the Christian Home Builders Sunday School Class and served in the church nursery for many years. She helped in sewing lap robes that were used in local nursing homes and she also helped in making baby blankets.
Miss Smith loved children and enjoyed visiting with her family members.
She is survived by a sister, Martha Watkins of Toccoa, Ga.; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by sisters Grace K. Smith, Mary E. Smith and an infant sister Edna Smith
Services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, March 13 in the Waynesboro Church Of The Brethren, 117 S. Church St., Waynesboro, with Rev. C. Albert Guyer officiating.
Burial will be in the Cedar Hill cemetery, Greencastle.
The family will receive friends at the church one hour before the service Thursday.

Edward A. Stahl Jr.
Edward A. Stahl Jr., 74 of Greencastle, died Monday March 3, 2008 in the Hershey Medical Center.
Born July 11, 1933 in McKeesport, the son of the late Edward A. Sr. and Dorothy J. Schaut Stahl and the widower of Joyce Turman.
Mr. Smith was a graduate of Shippensburg University with a B.A and received his masters degree from Virginia Tech University. He was a professor at Bucknell University and Pennsylvania State University, Mont Alto campus.
He was a US Marine Veteran serving from 1952-1960 and served in the US Army Reserve from 1979-1994 and retired with the rank of MSG. Edward received the Army Commendation Medal, the Army Achievement Medal with four Oak Leaf Clusters, the Army Reserve Component Achievement Medal with three Oak Leaf Clusters, and Military Outstanding Volunteer Service Medal.
Mr. Smith was a member of the Marine Corps League, Chambersburg, Korean War Veterans Antietam Chapter 312, American Am Vets and was a coordinator for Toys for Tots.
He is survived by his brother, Bob Stahl, and his wife Linda, of Carlisle; two nieces, Audrey Trussell, and her husband, Duncan, of Harrisburg, and Theresa Hepler, and her husband James, of York.
He was preceded in death by a step-son, Ford Cromer.
Services were held the morning of Monday, March 10, in the Calvary Bible Church, 3845 Buchanan Trail West, Greencastle, with the Rev. Glen Miller officiating.
Burial was in the Indiantown Gap National cemetery, Annville.

Beverly G. DeShong
Beverly G. (DeShong) DeShong, 78, a resident of NMS Health Care, Hagerstown, Md. and formerly of Hancock, Md. and Greencastle, died at 2:20 p.m. Saturday, March 8, 2008, in the nursing home. She had been in failing health for the past year and critically ill for the past three months.
Born Sept. 5, 1929 in Hanover, she was the daughter of the late Benjamin and Myrtle (Sipes) DeShong.
She and her husband, the late Elmer A. DeShong, were married March 2, 1946 in Hancock. They lived on Scenic View Dr. and Grant Shook Road in Greencastle. Mr. DeShong died April 6, 2005. Prior to entering the nursing home Jan. 4, 2008, Mrs. DeShong was living with her daughter, Julie, in Hancock.
Mrs. DeShong worked in the pressing department of the London Fog Sewing Factory, Hancock, from 1962-1992.
She was a member of New Life Christian Center, Mercersburg.
Mrs. DeShong enjoyed watching TV.
She is survived by four daughters, Sandra L. Ray of Hancock, Cora L. Santos of Chambersburg, Julie A. McCarty of Hancock and Teresa F. Norton of Greencastle; three sons, Franklin "Dean" DeShong of Mercersburg, Mark J. DeShong of Greencastle and Elmer Dwayne DeShong of Mercersburg; 24 grandchildren; 38 greatgrandchildren; three great-greatgrandchildren; two sisters, Esteline Humphries of Chambersburg and Myrna Sponsler of California; and a number of nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by one daughter, Mary Jane Sounders, who died Feb. 6, 1999; one son, Rodney Jan DeShong, who died Aug. 11, 1973; three granddaughters, Jeanette Sounders, Tammy Ray and Kelly DeShong; three sisters, Ruby Sipes, Shirley Bard and Fern DeShong; and two brothers, Glenn DeShong and Melvin DeShong.
Services were held the morning of Wednesday, March 12 in Miller-Bowersox Funeral Home, 521 S. Washington St., Greencastle, with Rev. Larry R. Murphy, officiating.
Burial followed in Cedar Hill cemetery, Greencastle.

Erla Jean Houpt
Erla Jean Houpt, 72, of 5959 Penrose Court, Port Orange, Fla., died at 9:30 p.m. March 5, 2008 at the Port Orange Hospice Care Center. She had resided in Port Orange since 1985.
Born March 6, 1935 in Bruin, she was a daughter of the late Fred W. and Amanda Wyant Linamen.
She retired from Brown and Brown Insurance of Daytona Beach, Fla. following 21 years of service.
She was a 1953 graduate of Bruin High school where she was class valedictorian. She was a graduate of Anderson University, Anderson, Ind.; Central Bible College, Springfield, Mo.; and Zion Bible College, Barrington, R.I.
From the age of 10, she served in various churches as the church pianist and organist for more than 60 years. She joined the ministry team of Gerard McColl Trio, following graduation from high school in 1955. She provided the children's ministry, sang alto in the trio, played birbraharp, piano, organ and accordion. Following her marriage, she served as church organist, pianist, Sunday school teacher, department leader and head of Women's Ministries.
In addition to her husband, James W. Houpt, she is survived by a daughter, Kimberlee J. May of Port Orange and a son, Kristopher J. Houpt of Linwood, N.C.; five grandchildren; and one great grandson.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a granddaughter, two brothers, and two sisters.
Services were held the morning of March 13 in Lininger-Fries Funeral Home Inc., Mercersburg. Burial was in Fairview cemetery, Mercersburg.
C. Romaine Hissong
C. Romaine Witter Hissong, 84, of 1425 Philadelphia Ave., Chambersburg, and formerly of Buchanan Trail West, Mercersburg, died at 6:30 a.m. March 10, 2008 in Penn Hall Nursing Center, Chambersburg.
Mrs. Hissong and her husband, Marvin D., had resided at the assisted living quarters of Penn Hall since Dec. 1, 2003.
Born Jan. 27, 1924 near Mercersburg, she was a daughter of the late Jere A. and Ruth Hege Witter.
Mrs. Hissong was a 1942 graduate of the former Mercersburg High school.
For many years she assisted her husband in the operation of the family dairy farm. For 10 years she was employed as a teacher's assistant in the Tuscarora School District.
She was a member of St. Stephen's United Church of Christ of Upton, where she taught Sunday school for 45 years. For a number of years she served on the Altar Guild Committee.
Mrs. Hissong enjoyed baby sitting her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She had a personal interest in vegetable and flower gardening. A ministry of Romaine's was sending greeting cards to family and friends.
In addition to her husband of over 64 years, Marvin D. Hissong, she is survived by six children, Jere D. Hissong and Larry W. Hissong, both of Mercersburg, Dennis R. Hissong and Beatrice K. Hoffman, both of Greencastle, Marvin E. Hissong of Lemasters and Gregory A. Hissong of St. Thomas; 19 grandchildren; 35 great grandchildren; four sisters, Doris Demuth and Thelma Statler, both of Chambersburg, and Ruth Hamil and Nancy Olin, both of Mercersburg.
In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by an infant brother.
Services were held the morning of March 14 in Welsh Run Church of the Brethren with the Revs. Harold Yeager, Henry Hunsberger and Robert Keener officiating.
Burial was in Fairview cemetery, Mercersburg.

Gladys B. Gayman
Gladys Burger Gayman, 87, of 227 Dickinson Ave., Waynesboro, and formerly of 12624 Molly Pitcher Highway, Greencastle, died at 10:15 p.m. Wednesday, March 12, 2008 in the home of her son, Fred, and daughter-in-law, Sylvia Gayman, of Waynesboro.
Born Aug. 7, 1920 in Greencastle, she was the daughter of the late Milford and Clara (Baker) Burger.
She was a homemaker and in 1997 retired from Sunnyway Foods of Greencastle. In her earlier years, she worked at the former GEM Garment Co. of Greencastle.
Mrs. Gayman was a member of the Greencastle Church Of The Brethren where she was a member of the Berean Sunday School Class.
She was a former member of the Harry D. Zeigler V.F.W. Post 6319 Ladies Auxiliary and a member of the national AARP.
She was a 1937 graduate of Greencastle High School.
She and her husband, Charles C. Gayman were married in June 1943. He died on November 20, 1970.
She is survived by two daughters, Karen I. Grosh of West Bend, Wis. and Mary K. Ehrhart of Greencastle; four sons, C. Robert Gayman and Fred B. Gayman, both of Waynesboro, Floyd B. Gayman and Lynn B. Gayman, both of Greencastle; 16 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by one brother, Wilbur Burger, and by a great-grandson, Brody Gayman.
Services were held the morning of Monday, March 17 in the Greencastle Church of The Brethren, 36 S. Carlisle St., Greencastle, with Rev. Leon Yoder officiating.
Burial was in the Cedar Hill cemetery, Greencastle.
