Miss Betty Ramsburg
Miss Betty Ann Ramsburg, 45, passed peacefully into the arms of God on
Friday, Jan. 25, 2008 at Carroll Lutheran Village, Westminster.
Born June 11, 1962, she was the daughter of Norma and J.R. Ramsburg Jr.
of Thurmont.
In addition to her parents, she is survived by one brother, Ray Ramsburg and
wife, Holly of Ijamsville; four nieces and nephews, Justin, Allie, Jackie, and
Jacob; her special aunt and a primary caregiver, Betty Ridgley and husband,
Carlton of Mount Airy; two additional aunts, Martha Ann Popovic of
Darnestown, and Mary Alice Grove of Frederick; and numerous cousins.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m., Monday, Jan. 28, at Keeney
and Basford P.A. Funeral Home, 106 E. Church St., Frederick.
Funeral services will begin at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 29, at St. Paul's
Lutheran Church Utica, 10625 Old Frederick Road, Thurmont. The Rev.
William M. Bucher will officiate. Interment will be in Utica cemetery.
Serving as bearers will be Ray Ramsburg, Justin Ramsburg, Dale Summers,
Dan Putman, Scotty Stottlemyer, and David Buhrman.

Mr. William Smith
William Franklin Smith, 93, livestock dealer, political and civic activist died March 10, at Frederick
Memorial Hospital. He was the son of Clyde W. Smith and M. Virginia Smith.
Mr. Smith was a longtime resident of New Market. He was born Aug. 4, 1914, in Ijamsville and
moved from Ijamsville to New Market when he was 16 years old to care for his grandfather. Mr.
Smith started raising calves in his grandfather's backyard and he worked at Mealey's Restaurant as
a young man.
After graduating from Frederick High School, Mr. Smith started a career as a livestock dealer and
became one of the largest in Frederick County buying cattle from Wisconsin and Florida and
shipping cattle to Italy and France. He was the last livestock dealer in Frederick County with a farm
on Boyers Mill Road.
Mr. Smith was involved in many civic and charitable organizations including the Great Frederick
Fair, the New Market Grange, Fire Department and Lions Club. He served on the New Market Town
Council from 1945 to 1949 before becoming mayor from 1949 to 1969. From 1969 to 2001, he
served on the Town Council. He was the most proud of renovating a small park along Main Street.
He was an active member of Grace Trinity United Church of Christ in Pearl.
Mr. Smith was preceded in death by his wife of 49 years, Grace Pauline Smith, in 1986 and a
brother, C. Gordon Smith.
He is survived by one son, C. Wayne Smith and daughter-in-law, Vera Smith Gerovac, both of
Frederick; grandsons, Aaron Smith of Moscow, and Justin Smith and his wife, Monique; greatgrandchildren,
Caiden and Jocelyn of Cohasset, Mass.; sister-in-law, Betty Smith of Ijamsville;
brother, C. Ralph Smith and wife, Louise of New Market; and nieces, Carolyn Pollatos and Ann
Smith; nephews, Philip and C. Thomas Smith.
Visitation will be from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday, March 16, at Keeney and Basford Funeral
Home, Frederick and the funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Monday, March 17, at Grace Trinity United
Church of Christ.
In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting donations be sent to the Mental Health Association

Mr. Franklin Smith

Mr. Clark Stone
Mr. Clark M. Stone, 60, of Jefferson, died on Sunday, Jan. 6, 2008 at the Kline
Hospice House, Mount Airy. He was the husband of the late Molly Elizabeth Shepley-
Stone, who died Nov. 27, 1994.
Born March 13, 1947, in Frederick, he was a son of the late Charles Fraley and
Beatrice M. Linton Stone. Mr. Stone graduated with the 1965 class of Frederick High
School and served in the Army National Guard, 29th Division, Company A from 1966
to 1972. During his school years, he worked at the A&P Grocery Store and later after
graduation and military service worked for the Frederick Trading Company and in
the maintenance and security departments of Crestwood Village. Most recently he
has worked in security with Toy-R-Us Distribution Center, Frederick and T.S. May
Associates.
He was an avid sports fan and followed the Chicago White Sox, Arizona Cardinals and
all Maryland Terrapins sports. He loved animals, especially cats and dogs.
He is survived by one brother, Clyde Edward Stone, of Urbana; three nephews, Clyde
Edward Stone Jr., Bryan Keith Stone and Eric Scott Stone, all of the Frederick area; a
step-son, Daniel Scott Bell, of Washington State; and a number of cousins, including
Franklin W. Martz and Trisha Ann Grove, also of Frederick.
He is especially remembered by his devoted and longtime friends, Dallas Watts,
James T. Bell and Gary Martin.
Besides his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by a number of aunts and
uncles, including Thelma Pauline Martz.
He was also touched by the loving compassion of his staff at the Kline Hospice
House, including Kathy, Gail and Rick.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 9 at the Keeney
and Basford Funeral Home, 106 E. Church St., Frederick. Funeral services will be
held at 2 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 10 at the funeral home.
Interment will be in Mount Olivet cemetery, Frederick.

Mrs. Sara Stup
Mrs. Sara Jane Free Stup, 90, of Frederick, died Sunday, Jan. 27, 2008, at
Homewood of Crumland Farms, where she had resided for several years.
She was married for 54 years to the late Howard Zimmerman Stup, who died
in 1989. Born near Frederick, Aug. 14, 1917, she was a daughter of the late
Harry Milton and Estie Kline Free.
Mrs. Stup graduated from Frederick High School in 1934. She was a member
of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Frederick, where she taught and
volunteered in the kindergarten department for over 52 years, and was a
member of the former mother's class. Mrs. Stup was also an active member
of the former Rocky Springs Union Church, the United Civic Association of
Shookstown, Edgewood and Rocky Springs, and the Gambrill Park
Homemakers Club. She devoted her life to her family and home.
Surviving are one son, Howard Free Stup and his wife, Rita Garman Stup, of
Evergreen, Colo.; and one daughter, Carol Ann Kepler and husband, James
A., of Catonsville; five grandsons, Kevin Stup and wife, Denise, of Evergreen,
Colo., Brian Stup and wife, Miki, of San Diego, Calif., Jay Stup and wife, Lori,
of Ramona, Calif., James M. Kepler, and Jason Kepler and wife, Tasha, all of
Denver, Colo.; seven great-grandchildren, Dylan and Tyler Stup, of
Evergreen, Colo., Lily and Evan Stup, of San Diego, Calif., and Amanda,
Rachel and Brandon Stup, of Ramona, Calif., two sisters, Ruth Miller, of
Boonsboro and Grace Koehl, of Frederick; and many nieces and nephews.
She will also be remembered by her special family of more than seven years
on the Willows Unit at Homewood at Crumland Farms. The family expresses
much gratitude for the love and care she received with them.
Mrs. Stup was preceded in death by a grandson, John F. Stup, two brothers,
Harold M. Free and G. Monroe Free, and three sisters, Dorothy Putman,
Helen Griffin and Jeanette Campbell, all of the Frederick area.
The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m., Thursday, Jan.
31, at the Keeney and Basford Funeral Home, 106 E. Church St., Frederick.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Feb. 1, from the Evangelical
Lutheran Church, 31 E. Church St., Frederick. The Rev. Dr. David G. Oravec ,
pastor of the church, will officiate. Interment will be in the Rocky Springs
cemetery, Frederick.
Pallbearers will be her son-in-law, James A. Kepler and her grandsons; Kevin
Stup, Brian Stup, Jay Stup, James M. Kepler and Jason Kepler.

Mrs. Mabel Tobery
Mrs. Mabel Luella (Sier) Tobery, 99, of Frederick, died Monday, Jan. 14, 2008, at the
College View Nursing Center, following a brief illness. She was the wife of the late
Grover Cornelius Tobery, who died in 1969.
Born June 7, 1908, in Araby, Frederick County, she was the daughter of the late
William Allen Sier and Lillie Ann (May) Sier Bailey. She was raised by her late
paternal grandmother, Sarah Louise (Ford) Sier.
Mrs. Tobery was a member of the Mt. Carmel United Methodist Church and the
United Methodist Women. She was a regular participant in activities at the Frederick
Senior Center, and she enjoyed crocheting. She loved life, and was looking forward
to celebrating her 100th birthday with her family and friends.
Surviving are three daughters, Betty Ann Virginia Bradshaw and her husband,
Bobby, of Taneytown, Hilda Viola Dove of Frederick, with whom she had been
residing, and Anna Mary Mantz and her husband, Peter, of Marydel. She is survived
by eight grandchildren, Steven Allen Tobery of Frederick, whom she helped raise,
Mary Virginia Dove of Frederick, Richard Franklin Dove and his wife, Pam, of Boyds,
William Lee Dove and his wife, Lillie, of Frederick, Ronald Barton Dove of
Hagerstown, Susan Elaine (Dove) Wolfe and her husband, James, of Woodsboro,
Peter Austin Mantz Jr. and his wife, Rose, of Lexington Park, and Patricia Ann
(Mantz) Klopp and her husband, Robert, of Chestertown. Also surviving are 18 greatgrandchildren
and nine great-great-grandchildren, along with six step-greatgrandchildren
and four step-great-great-grandchildren.
Mrs. Tobery was the last of her immediate family, preceded in death by her brothers,
Harry Franklin Sier of Frederick, and Clarence W. Sier(s), of York, Pa.; her sister,
Nellie Viola (Sier) Wachter of Frederick; and her half-sisters, Myrtle R. (Sier) Fleming
of York, Pa., and Cortney A. (Sier) Gross of Frederick. She was also predeceased by
a son-in-law, Arnold Barton Dove of Frederick.
The family will receive friends from 3 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 17, at
Keeney and Basford P.A. Funeral Home, 106 E. Church St., Frederick. Funeral
services will be held at 1 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 18, at the Mt. Carmel United Methodist
Church, with Pastor Jennifer K. Smith officiating. Interment will be in the adjoining
cemetery.

Master Andrew Burdette
Master Andrew Martin Burdette, infant son of Joseph C. and Tracey L. Benedick Burdette Jr., of
Frederick, died Monday, Feb. 25, 2008, at The Johns Hopkins Hospital, Baltimore. He was born
Sunday, Feb. 24 at the Frederick Memorial Hospital.
Besides his parents, Andrew is survived by a sister, Tara Nicole Burdette, at home; maternal
grandparents, Diane Benedick of Hagerstown and Denny Benedick, of McConnellsburg, Pa.; paternal
grandparents, Pastor Joseph C. Burdette Sr., of Frederick and Sandy L. Burdette, of Boonsboro;
maternal great-grandfather, William Corwell, of Philadelphia, Pa. and maternal great-grandmother,
Lois Link, of McConnellsburg; paternal great-grandmother, Frances Burdette of Frederick and
Paternal great-grandparents, Herbert and Emma Abrecht, of Frederick; paternal great-greatgrandmother,
Lillian Fogle, of Woodsboro.
He is also survived by an uncle, Tyler Benedick, of Hagerstown; aunt and uncle, Emily and Rob
Griffith and cousins, Madison and Mackenzie Griffith, all of Hagerstown; specially devoted friends,
Mark and Emily Smallwood, of Frederick; as well as a number of great-aunts, great-uncles, counsins
and friends.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Friday, Feb. 29, from the Keeney and Basford, P.A., Funeral
Home, 106 E. Church St., Frederick with his grandfather, Pastor Joseph Burdette, officiating.
Interment will be in Mount Olivet cemetery, Frederick.
