Pennsylvania Obituary and Marriage Records, 1947-2010

Harriet E. Bivens
Harriet E. (Lininger) Bivens, 95, of a resident of Falling Spring Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Chambersburg, and formerly of 1507 Mountain Road, Mercersburg, died at 2:15 a.m., Monday, June 18, 2007 in the nursing home. She had been in failing health for the past two months and critically ill for the last two weeks.

Born April 26, 1912 in Peters Township, she was the daughter of the late J. William and Clara (Gift) Lininger. She spent her early life in the Fort Loudon area.

Mrs. Bivens attended Mountain Home School.

She and her husband, the late Mr. Harry J. Bivens, were married Oct. 25, 1951 in Fort Loudon Lutheran Church. They moved to the farm following their marriage. Mr. Bivens died April 3, 1986. She entered the nursing home April 20, 2007.

Mrs. Bivens was employed for H.J. Heinz Company, Chambersburg, for over 30 years.

She was a member of Salem Evangelical Lutheran Church, Marion, and Disabled American Veteran's of Chambersburg.

She enjoyed reading her Bible, doing puzzles and crocheting.

She is survived by one sister, Isabelle N. Stahl, a resident of Providence Place, Chambersburg; and a number of nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by two sisters, Catherine Kissinger and Hazel A. Ensminger; and an infant brother, Robert Lininger.

Services will be held at 11 a.m., Thursday, June 21 in Salem Evangelical Lutheran Church, 99 Miller Road, Chambersburg, with Pastor Denise B. Horn and Pastor Allen Reed officiating.

Burial will follow in Stenger Hill cemetery, Fort Loudon.

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service in the church.

Memorial contributions may be made to Salem Evangelical Lutheran Church, 99 Miller Road, Chambersburg, PA 17201.

Arrangements are by Miller- Bowersox Funeral Home, Greencastle.

Floyd S. Starliper
Floyd S. "Spirdie" Starliper, 76, of 76 Mason Road, Greencastle, died at 9 a.m., Monday, June 18, 2007 in his home.

Born Dec. 26, 1930 in Greencastle, he was the son of the late Spirdie W. and Blanche M. (Gearhart) Starliper.

He and his wife, Helen N. (Wolford) Starliper were married July 31, 1954 in Greencastle.

Mr. Starliper retired in 1987 after over 36 years of employment from the Letterkenny Army Depot, Chambersburg, where he worked as a motor vehicle inspector. He was a Deputy Game Protector with the Pennsylvania Game Commission for 28 years.

He was a member of the Ebenezer "Guitners" United Brethren Church of Greencastle.

He was a 1948 graduate of the Greencastle High School.

Mr. Starliper was a life member of the Greencastle Rescue Hose Company No. 1 and Greencastle Rescue Hose Company No. 1 Ambulance Squad. He was a member of the Marion Volunteer Fire Company No. 8 and the Mount Pisgah Lodge No. 443 F.& A.M. of Greencastle.

He enjoyed boating and crabbing with his son.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by a son, Rick A. Starliper of Drayden, Md.; two sisters, Mary Ellen Lewis of Hagerstown, Md. and Helen Gontz of Chambersburg; three grandchildren; three great grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by four brothers, Eugene Starliper, Paul Starliper, Clayton Starliper and an infant brother; and three sisters, Pauline Bingaman, Kathleen Fisher and Lily Shindle.

A graveside service will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, June 21 at the Brown's Mill cemetery with Rev. Richard Mose officiating.

There will be no public viewing.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the Hospice Of The Good Shepherd, 2700 Luther Dr., Chambersburg, PA 17201.

Elmer M. Showalter
Elmer M. Showalter, 84, a resident of Menno Haven, Chambersburg, for the past 1 1/2 years and formerly of Hagerstown Md. died at 12:46 p.m. Friday June 15, 2007 at Menno Haven. Born April 19, 1923 near Hagerstown, Md., he was the son of the late Martin W. and Katie (Reiff) Showalter.

Elnora Z. Danzberger
Elnora Z. (Zeger) Danzberger, 76, of 261 Alleman Road, Chambersburg, and a guest of Falling Spring Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Chambersburg, died at 4:45 P.M. Saturday, June 16, 2007 in the nursing home. She was in failing health for the past six months and critically ill for the past six weeks.

Born on March 19, 1931 in Quincy Township near Waynesboro, she was the daughter of the late Albert A. and Cornelia K. (Gearhart) Zeger. She lived her early life in Shady Grove.

Mrs. Danzberger graduated from Greencastle High School with the Class of 1949.

She and her late husband, Mr. Harry M. Danzberger Jr., were married June 25, 1955 in Hagerstown, Md. They moved to the present residence in 1955. Mr. Danzberger died Nov. 6, 2005. Mrs. Danzberger entered the nursing home, Feb. 15, 2007.

From 1955 through 1961, she was a machine operator for Stanley Company, Chambersburg.

Mrs. Danzberger was a member of Marion First United Methodist Church, Marion, Greencastle Sportsman Auxilary, Marion Volunteer Fire Company Auxiliary and a life member of Marion Volunteer Fire Company.

She enjoyed baking, sewing, working on crafts, gardening, crocheting, and spending time with her grandchildren.

She is survived by three children, Ronald L. (wife Lois) Danzberger of Greencastle; Jeffrey L. Danzberger of Chambersburg; Kimberly A. Scott of Chambersburg; four grandchildren; two step-grandsons; one great-granddaughter; one step-great grandson; daughter-in-law, Helen M. (husband Mike) Mata of Chambersburg; sisters and brothers, Thomas Zeger, Ruby Oberholzer, Patricia Martin, Jackie Izer and Galen Zeger all of Shady Grove; and a number of nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a son, Daryl E. Danzberger who died Nov. 19, 1990; a son-in-law, Ricky L. Scott, who died Feb. 1,2007; sister, Doris Piper; and a brother, Teddy Zeger.

Services will be held the morning of Wednesday, June 20 in Miller- Bowersox Funeral Home, Greencast1e with Rev. Chris E. Renner and Rev. John A. Ile officiating.

Burial will be in Parklawn Memorial Gardens, Chambersburg.

Memorial contributions may be made to Marion First United Methodist Church, 94 Colorado Street, or Marion Volunteer Fire Company, P.O. Box 94, both of Marion, PA 17235.

Richard Daniel Miller
Richard Daniel Miller, 52, of 9180 Goods Dam Road, Waynesboro, Pa. died at 1:15 p.m. Friday, June 29, 2007 in the Hershey Medical Center, Hershey.

Born Dec. 30, 1954 in Waynesboro, he was the son of Alice (Martin) Miller of Waynesboro and the late Daniel Miller.

Mr. Miller was a farmer and a member of the Stouffers Mennonite Church near Smithsburg, Md.

He and his wife, Ethel M. (Martin) Miller were married March 25, 1976.

In addition to his mother and wife he is survived by six sons, Karmon Miller of Chambersburg, Myron Miller of Waynesboro, Rodney Miller, Randall Miller, Daniel Miller and Leon Miller, all at home; one daughter, Brenda Horst of Waynesboro; two sisters, Mary Lois Miller of Waynesboro and Ellen Horst of Chambersburg; a brother, Nelson Miller of Hagerstown, Md.; and nine grandchildren.

In addition to his  Father, he was preceded in death by a brother, Arvin Miller.

Services were held the morning of Tuesday, July 3 in Stouffers Mennonite Church with the Stouffers Mennonite Church Ministry officiating.

Burial was in the Stouffers Mennonite Church cemetery.

The family requests the omission of flowers.

Arrangements were handled by the Harold M. Zimmerman And Son Funeral Home, Greencastle.

Julia Helen Keto
Julia Helen Keto, 86, of 15021 Maryland Line Road, Greencastle, for the last 31 years, died Tuesday, July 17, 2007 at the NMS Healthcare of Hagerstown, Md. nursing home.

Born Oct. 31, 1920 in Jersey City, N.J., she was the daughter of the late Einar and Elsa (Walkonen) Wickholm

She graduated from Lincoln High School, N.J., plus business school, and the Delehanty Institute Vocational Division in New York City. She retired in 1976 from National Geographic, Washington, D.C. having been employed prior to World War II by Burrelle's Press Clipping, N.Y. and during World War II as a "Rosie-the-Riveter" in final assemble of a bombsight at Sperry Gyroscope, Brooklyn, N.Y. and as a machinist at Aberdeen Proving Grounds following her marriage.

While she was at Sperry Gyroscope she was a member of the Sperry Choral Society and was chosen to compete as "Miss Victory/ The Typical American Girl War Worker," surviving as one of the semifinalists out of hundreds of entries.

She was a member of the Faculty Woman's Club following the war while her husband was teaching at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Troy, N.Y. Her memorable moments while her husband was employed as a Federal Civil Servant were attending a "tea reception" at the White House, numerous social events at the Finnish Embassy, where she met Urho Kekkonen, the President of Finland, and affairs of the Finlandia Foundation, National Capital Chapter as a member.

More recently, she was a member of the Coseytown Homemakers, AARP, Disabled American Veterans Auxiliary, AACA and VMCCA.

She is survived by her husband Jorma (Ray) Keto, whom she married in New York City on May 9, 1943 while he was in the Army; her children Karlen Keto of Yarrowsburg, Md., Hilkka Brucksch and husband John of Smithsburg, Md. and Raymond Keto and wife Joan of New Berne, N.C.; eight grandchildren; one great granddaughter; various nieces and nephews; and her sister's husband, Wally Keto of Oneonta, N.Y.

She was preceded in death by her sister, Carrie (Wickholm) Keto, and her brother, Harold Wickholm.

She was the last of her immediate family.

At her request, there was no viewing or funeral service.

Her remains will be interred in her husband's family plot in Glenwood cemetery, Oneonta, N.Y.

Arrangements were handled by the Harold M. Zimmerman And Son Funeral Home, Greencastle.

William D. Heckman
William D. Heckman, 81, of 5103 Lemar Road, Mercersburg, died unexpectedly Wednesday morning, July 18, 2007 in his home.

Born Aug. 27, 1925 in Franklin County, he was the son of the late I. Elam and Ruth (Straley) Heckman.

He was the husband of the late Clara E. (Fetterhoff) Heckman, whom he married July 29, 1950. She died July 20, 1996.

Mr. Heckman was employed by the Letterkenny Army Depot, Chambersburg, retiring in 1985. In his earlier years he was employed by the former Fairchild Aircraft, Hagerstown, Md.

He was a member of the Ebenezer "Guitners" United Brethren Church of Greencastle since 1950 and attended regularly.

Mr. Heckman was a 1943 graduate of the Lemasters High School.

He served in the United States Army during World War II from 1943-1946.

Mr. Heckman enjoyed wood working and gardening.

He is survived by a son, Terry L. (husband of Julie Dalby) Heckman of Mercersburg; three grandchildren, Kristopher, Katelyn and Bryant Heckman, all of Mercersburg; one brother, Robert H. Heckman of Mercersburg; and a companion of seven years, Mary Cook of Mercersburg.

Services were held the afternoon of Saturday, July 21 in Ebenezer "Guitners" United Brethren Church, Greencastle, with Pastor Eric Beck officiating.

Burial was in the Cedar Hill cemetery, Greencastle.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the Ebenezer United Brethren Church, 3661 Williamson Rd., Greencastle, PA. 17225.

Mary C. Parmer
Mary C. Parmer, 96, a resident of Morning Glory Retirement Home, State Line, Pa., and formerly of Hollowell Church Road, Waynesboro, died at 2:30 a.m., Saturday, July 28, 2007 in the home.

Born July 9, 1911 in Greencastle, she was the daughter of the late Daniel H. and Minnie (Bowman) Bowders.

She and her husband, Charles S. Parmer Sr. were married Feb. 23, 1929. He died Dec. 15, 2005.

Mrs. Parmer was a homemaker.

She is survived by a son, Charles S. Parmer Jr. of Waynesboro; a grandson, Douglas Parmer of Baltimore, Md.; two sisters, Anna M. Mayhugh Miller of Waynesboro and Margaret Gelwicks of York; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by two sisters, Julia Bowders and Corrine Stoner; and four brothers, Merle, Robert, Melvin and Ralph Bowders.

Services were held the morning of Wednesday, Aug. 1 in the Harold M. Zimmerman And Son Funeral Home, Greencastle, with Minister Shelley Graybill officiating.

Burial will be in the Beautiful View cemetery, near State Line.

Alvin A. Hicks
Alvin A. Hicks, 94, a resident of the Quarters at the Shook Home, Chambersburg, and formerly of 8335 Molly Pitcher Highway, Greencastle, died at 7:40 a.m. Friday, Aug. 3, 2007 in the Quarters.

Born April 29, 1913 in Coseytown, he was the son of the late Albertus and Emma (Brindle) Hicks.

He and his wife Catherine M. (Statler) Hicks were married June 9, 1934 in Hagerstown, Md. She died Sept. 22, 2001.

Mr. Hicks began his career repairing and selling automobiles in the Hagerstown area in the early 1930s, before opening the former Marion Auto Body Works of Marion in 1938. From 1942-1946 during World War II he entered defense work with the former Fairchild Aircraft of Hagerstown, MD. Then in 1950 Mr. Hicks founded Hicks Chevrolet Inc. of Greencastle and operated the dealership until his retirement.

He was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Greencastle.

Mr. Hicks was also a member of the Greencastle Lions Club for over 60 years, where he was a past president and became a Melvin Jones Fellow in 1996. He was life member of the Greencastle Rescue Hose Company No. 1 and the Greencastle Sportsman Association.

He was a former director of the Greencastle-Antrim Area Development Corporation and Franklin County Area Development. He was a member of the Greencastle-Antrim Chamber of Commerce. He served on the Board of Associates of the former Citizens National Bank of Greencastle.

He is survived by a daughter, Leona H. Witmer of Harrisonburg, Va.; two sons, Kermit G. Hicks of Greencastle and Roger A. Hicks of Riverton, Wyo.; a sister, Ferne Tritle of Greencastle; 11 grandchildren; 19 great grandchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by one daughter, Phyllis H. Utterback; three sisters, Velda Myers, Rhoda Swisher and Julia Burkett; and a brother Glenn D. Hicks.

Services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Aug. 10 in the First United Methodist Church, 45 N. Washington St., Greencastle with Rev. Stacy Crawford officiating.

Burial will be in the Cedar Hill cemetery, Greencastle.

The family will receive friends from noon to 2 p.m. Friday.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the First United Methodist Church, 45 N. Washington St., Greencastle, PA. 17225, Shook Home, 55 S. Second St., Chambersburg, PA. 17201, or to the Medic 2 ALS Unit, P.O. Box 447, Waynesboro, PA. 17268.
