Pennsylvania Obituary and Marriage Records, 1947-2010

John Nelson Beaver
John Nelson Beaver, 87, of 11364 Koons Road, Waynesboro, died at 2:45 p.m. Tuesday, May 1, 2007 in his home.

Born Dec. 13, 1919 in Upton, he was the son of the late John K. and Ella May (Ovelman) Beaver.

He and his wife, Susan D. (Knode) Beaver were married April 24, 1970. He and his first wife, Corinne Amanda (Helm) Beaver were married April 12, 1940. She died March 8, 1967.

Mr. Beaver owned and operated a dairy farm on Wharf Road in Zullinger, from 1946 until retiring in 1993.

In his earlier years he worked on a farm and at a tool company in Greencastle. He was a World War II veteran, serving in the South Pacific in the United States Marine Corps.

Mr. Beaver had belonged to various farm organizations and to the Silver Star Saddle Club of Greencastle.

He was a member of the Harry D. Zeigler V.F.W. Post 6319 of Greencastle, Frank L. Carbaugh American Legion Post 373 of Greencastle, Amvets Post 224 of Chambersburg and the Red Men Club Lodge 84 of Williamsport, Md.

He attended school in Antrim Township.

Mr. Beaver enjoyed duck pin bowling, dancing and square dancing and had belonged to several local square dance groups.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by two  daughters, N. Jean Royston of New Freedom and R. Sue Bivens of Greencastle; three sons, Nelson R. Beaver, Barton C. Beaver and Todd J. Beaver, all of Waynesboro; four brothers, Howard Beaver of Greencastle, Roy Beaver of Greencastle, Arthur Beaver of Pond Bank and Ken Beaver of Chambersburg; five grandsons; and a greatgranddaughter.

He was preceded in death by four brothers, Charles Beaver, Bob Beaver, Clarence Beaver and Paul Beaver; and four sisters, Anna Beaver, Kathryn Beaver, Eleanor Beaver and Helen Beaver.

Services were held the morning of Friday, May 4, in the Harold M. Zimmerman And Son Funeral Home, Greencastle, with Pastor Howard Beaver Jr. officiating.

Burial with military graveside honors by the Chambersburg V.F.W. Post 1599 Honor Guard was in the Parklawns Memorial Gardens, Chambersburg.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions be given in his memory to the Hospice Of The Good Shepherd 2700 Luther Dr. Chambersburg, Pa. 17201.

Elva M. Horst
Elva M. Horst, 92, a resident of the Mennonite Home, Hagerstown, Md., died Wednesday, May 16, 2007 at 9:55 a.m. in the home.

Born May 28, 1914 in Hagerstown, she was the daughter of the late Abram G. and Susie (Baer) Horst.

She was a member of the Millers Mennonite Church, Leitersburg, Md.

She did housework for various families throughout her life time.

She is survived by a sister, Mabel I. Horst of Hagerstown; 12 nieces and seven nephews; many great and great great nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by one sister, Edna Horst; three brothers, Adin Horst, Irvin Horst and Lesher Horst; and two nephews, Earl Horst and Roy Horst.

Services were held the afternoon of Saturday, May 19 in Millers Mennonite Church, near Leitersburg, with the Millers Mennonite Church Ministry officiating.

Burial was in the adjoining church cemetery.

The family requests that flowers be omitted.

Arrangements were handled by the Harold M. Zimmerman And Son Funeral Home of Greencastle.

Donald E. Kalbflesh
Donald E. Kalbflesh, 84, of Chambersburg, died Tuesday, May 15, 2007 at 3:41 p.m. in the Chambersburg Hospital, Chambersburg.

Born Oct. 13, 1922 in Hagerstown, Md., he was the son of the late Earl F. and Aleatha J. (Barnhart) Kalbflesh.

He was the husband of Frances Virginia (Shank) Grimes Kalbflesh of Chambersburg.

Mr. Kalbflesh retired from the former Fairchild Aircraft of Hagerstown, where he worked as an inspector. He later owned and operated ABC Electronics in his Chambersburg home.

He attended the Ebenezer "Guitners" United Brethren Church of Greencastle.

Mr. Kalbflesh was a veteran of the United States Army serving during World War II.

He was a member of the Chambersburg American Legion Post 46.

He was a graduate of Hagerstown High School.

He is survived by a nephew, Fred Hafer of Greencastle.

Mr. Kalbflesh was the last of his immediate family.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Bernice Hafer.

Services were held the morning of Friday, May 18 in Harold M. Zimmerman And Son Funeral Home Inc., Greencastle, with Pastor Eric Beck officiating.

Burial was in the Rose Hill cemetery, Hagerstown.

In lieu of flowers memorial contributions can be made to the Marion Volunteer Fire Company, P.O. Box 68, Marion, PA 17235.

Ruth A. Helman
Ruth A. Helman, 87, of 2792 Wayne Road, Chambersburg, died on Monday, May 14, 2007 in Providence Place, Chambersburg. Born on January 7, 1920 in Hamilton Twp., PA, she was a daughter of the late David McClay Frey and Retiza Lucy Byers Frey. She was the widow of Floyd T. Helman, who died in April of 2000.

Elsie L. Koons
Elsie L. (Binkley) Koons, 91, a resident of Menno Haven, Chambersburg,and formerly of 15595 Pennsylvania Ave., North State Line, Pa. died at 10:30 p.m. Sunday, May 27, 2007 in the Chambersburg Hospital. She had been in declining health for the past month.

Born Aug. 17, 1915 in Hagerstown, Md., she was the daughter of the late Jacob Allen and Lillie Mae (Shank) Binkley.

She was a seamstress for 44 years at the former Stanley Co., Chambersburg, retiring in 1980.

Mrs. Koons was a life member of the Trinity United Church Of Christ, State Line, where she taught Sunday School and was involved in many church activities.

She assisted with the public dinners held at the State Line Ruritan Building and was a former member of the Ruritan Ladies Auxiliary.

Mrs. Koons enjoyed bowling, sewing, crocheting needlepoint, going on bus trips and spending time with her family. She enjoyed her Menno Haven activities, especially doing the word search puzzles and making afghans.

She and her husband, Jacob S. "Jake" Koons were married Sept. 5, 1934. He died Sept. 22, 1996.

She is survived by a daughter, Helen Louise Koons (wife of Dale) Gearhart of Shady Grove; two sisters, Beulah Catherine Overcash of Chambersburg, and Anna Belle Reeves of Merritt Island, Fla.; a granddaughter, Denise Lyn (Gearhart) Baer of Greencastle; a great-granddaughter, Ashley Marie Baer of St. Cloud, Fla.

She was preceded in death by an infant sister Dorothea Irene Binkley; sister, Frances M. Bartles; brothers, Paul Leroy Binkley, Ralph William Binkley and Harold Franklin Binkley.

Services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday June 1 in Harold M. Zimmerman And Son Funeral Home 45 S. Carlisle St. Greencastle, with Revs. Edwin Higginbottom, Charles E. Doll Jr. and Jerry Fuss officiating.

Burial will be in the Rest Haven cemetery, Hagerstown, Md.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, May 31 in the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be given to the Annex Fund of the Trinity United Church Of Christ Of State Line P.O. Box 266 State Line, Pa. 17263.

Helen Elizabeth Beaver Ruck
Helen Elizabeth Beaver Ruck, 82, of 410 McDowell Avenue, Hagerstown Md., died Sunday, May 27, 2007, at the Washington County Hospital, Hagerstown. Born Friday, Aug. 15, 1924, in Hagerstown, she was the daughter of the late George C. Beaver, Sr. and Teresa A. Murphy Beaver.

V-Ann C. Staley
V-Ann C. Staley, 75, a resident of The Village of Laurel Run, Fayetteville, formerly of 122 Clayton Ave., Waynesboro, died at 4:10 a.m. Friday, May 25, 2007 in the nursing home. She had been in failing health for the last month.

Mabel G. Gearhart
Mabel G. (Rotz) Gearhart, 84, a resident of the Falling Spring Nursing And Rehabilitation Center, Chambersburg, for the last month and formerly of Williamson Road, Greencastle, died at 2:38 p.m. Tuesday, June 5, 2007 in the nursing center. She had been in declining health the past six months.

Born June 9, 1922 in St. Thomas, she was the daughter of the late Roy and Mary (Musselman) Rotz.

Mrs. Gearhart worked for the former Stanley Co., Chambersburg, and the former GEM Garment, Greencastle.

She was a member of the Ebenezer "Guitners" United Brethren Church near Greencastle, where she also was a member of the Women's Missionary Society.

Mrs. Gearhart had been a member of the Greencastle TOPS organization.

She and her husband, James L. "Jim" Gearhart, were married Feb. 15, 1941. He died July 29, 2002.

She is survived by three  daughters, Barbara Ann (wife of Ray) Heckman of Mercersburg, Nancy Lee (wife of Harry) Shipley of Chambersburg and Judith I. (wife of Martin) Kelly of Claysburg; two sisters, Agnes Shatzer of Virginia and Irene Newman of Chambersburg; eight grandchildren; and 10 greatgrandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a brother, Clarence Rotz, and a sister, Anna Dentler.

Services were held the morning of Friday, June 8, in the Harold M. Zimmerman And Son Funeral Home, Greencastle, with Rev. Richard Mose and Rev. Eric Beck officiating.

Burial was in the Parklawns Memorial Gardens, Chambersburg.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be given to the Falling Spring Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, 201 Franklin Farm Lane, Chambersburg, Pa. 17201.

Paul H. Berger
Paul H. Berger, 78 of 3513 Leitersburg Road, Waynesboro, died unexpectedly Thursday morning, June 7, 2007 in his home.

Born March 22, 1929 in Antrim Township, he was the son of the late Denton and Edith (Oberholzer) Berger.

In his earlier years he worked at the former Fulton Gsell Excavating, Waynesboro, and then for 34 years he worked for Lee R. Hamner Excavating, Waynesboro. He last was employed for 10 years at Callas Construction Co., Hagerstown, Md.

Mr. Berger attended Hollowell Brethren In Christ Church near Waynesboro.

He enjoyed walking, gardening, hunting and being with his family, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

He and his wife, Gail L. (Overcash) Berger were married Aug. 5, 1950 in Hagerstown.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by two  daughters, Sandra K. Harmon of Willingboro, N.J. and Sharon A. Mc- Cartney of Chambersburg; two sons, Dennis R. Berger and David M. Berger, both of Waynesboro; three sisters, Anna Rock of Chambersburg, Edith Miller and Beulah Harshman, both of Greencastle; 12 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and numerous nephews and nieces.

He was preceded in death by four brothers, William Berger, Ralph Berger, Tab Berger and Roy Berger; and four sisters, Edith Bingaman, Alice Grosh, Helen Gsell and Frances Kell.

Services were held the morning of Monday, June 11, in the Harold M. Zimmerman And Son Funeral Home, Greencastle, with Pastor Blaine Lougheed officiating.

Burial was in the Green Hill cemetery, Waynesboro.

Robert L. "Red" Pensinger
Robert L. "Red" Pensinger, age 74 of 323 Moss Spring Ave., Greencastle, died at 12:45 p.m. Saturday, June 16, 2007 in his home.

Born Feb. 22, 1933 in Marion, he was the son of the late Arthur H. and Hazel K. (Statler) Pensinger.

Mr. Pensinger established his State Farm Insurance Agency in Greencastle in 1965 and it became the largest agency in the state of Pennsylvania and the fifth largest in the nation by the time he retired in 1997.

He was a lifetime member of the State Farm President's Club and was past president of the Pennsylvania State Farm Retired Agents Association. Red was a Legion of Honor agent six times and qualified for the Bronze Tablet in 1989.

Mr. Pensinger served as the mayor of Greencastle from 2002 to 2006 and was vice chairman of the Board of Directors for Tower Bancorp Inc. and The First National Bank of Greencastle.

He has always been involved in community events, as well as civic organizations. He served as Scout Master for Troop 13 in Greencastle, was co-founder of the Brown's Mill Ruritan Club (now known as Kauffman Ruritan Club), managed Kauffman's Little League team for 10 years and was instrumental in developing the football program for the Greencastle Antrim High School.

Mr. Pensinger was a member and former deacon of the Grace United Church Of Christ of Greencastle and was a director for the Greencastle-Antrim Foundation, an organization that helped establish the John L. Grove Medical Center in Greencastle. He served as a director of the Allison- Antrim Museum in Greencastle. He has volunteered for the Franklin County Office of the Aging by delivering meals to shutins, the American Cancer Society, the American Heart Association and the Franklin County United Way.

He was a member of the Greencastle-Antrim Chamber Of Commerce of which he received the 1997 James P. Oliver Award for his leadership skills and his community involvement. He was a director and Past President in 2001 of the Greencastle-Antrim Old Home Week Association, a triennial celebration event held in Greencastle. He served as cochairman of the Medic 2 Capital fund drive in order for the Medic 2 unit to be readily available to the community.

In 1995 he received the Book of Golden Deeds Award presented by the Greencastle Exchange Club.

He was a 1951 graduate of the Greencastle High School.

He and his wife, Nancy M (Meyers) Pensinger were married Aug. 9, 1953 in King Street United Brethren Church in Chambersburg.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by a daughter, Robin P. Rock, of Greencastle; a son, R. Lynn Pensinger of Avon, Ohio; two brothers, Tom Pensinger of Greencastle and Joseph Pensinger of Virginia; a sister, Doris Wells of Greencastle; three grandsons; one granddaughter; two great-grandsons.

A private graveside service will be held at the convenience of the family in Brown's Mill cemetery Kauffman.

There was no public viewing, however a visitation was held.

Memorial contributions may be given in his memory to the Hospice Of The Good Shepherd, 2700 Luther Dr., Chambersburg, Pa. 17201 or to the Greencastle- Antrim Old Home Week Association, C/O Jeff Shank, President, P.O. Box 536 Greencastle, Pa. 17225.

Arrangements were handled by the Harold M. Zimmerman And Son Funeral Home, Greencastle.
