Pennsylvania Obituary and Marriage Records, 1947-2010

Dorothy M. Williams
Dorothy M. Williams, 84, of 796 Buchanan Trail East, Greencastle, died at 4:15 a.m. Monday, Feb. 26, 2007 in the Falling Spring Nursing And Rehabilitation Center, Chambersburg, where she has been a resident since October 2006.

Born Oct. 2, 1922 in Shady Grove, she was the daughter of the late George and Emma (Shank) Stine.

She worked for nearly 40 years at the former J. Schoeneman (Stanley Co.), Chambersburg.

Mrs. Williams was a member of the Otterbein United Brethren Church, Greencastle.

She was a 1941 graduate of Greencastle High School.

Mrs. Williams enjoyed oil painting, doing ceramics and camping with her family.

She and her husband, Chester "Chet" T. Williams were married Dec. 22, 1945.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by two sons, Larry (husband of Kathy) Williams, Jeffrey (companion of Carol Morgan) Williams, both of Greencastle; one daughter, Gretchen (wife Of Gary) Nelson of Greencastle; two brothers, Ray Stine of Shady Grove and George Stine Jr. of Waynesboro; one sister, Janet Suffecool of Shady Grove; three granddaughters; one stepgrandson; and two great granddaughters

Services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, March 1 in the Harold M. Zimmerman And Son Funeral Home, 45 South Carlisle St., Greencastle, with Rev. Gayle L. Ruble Sr. officiating.

Burial will be in the Cedar Hill cemetery, Greencastle.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 28 in the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the Antietam Humane Society, 8513 Lyons Rd., Waynesboro, PA. 17268.

Roy M. James
Roy M. James, 90, of Clearwater, Fla. and formerly of Greencastle, died Tuesday, Feb. 20, 2007 in Morton Plant Hospital, Clearwater.

Born Oct. 3, 1916 in Fulton County, he was the son of the late Thompson and Anna (Commer) James.

He and his wife Joan (Bower) James were married for 42 years.

Mr. James was a veteran of World War II, serving in the United States Army.

He was a member of the Grace United Church of Christ, Greencastle.

In his earlier years he was employed by the former M.P. Moller Organ Company, Hagerstown, Md. as a pipe organ maintenance and tuning specialist. After moving to Florida in 1968 he continued his work on pipe organs for numerous churches in Florida.

He was the last of his immediate family.

He was preceded in death by a brother, William Scott James, and a sister Mary Ellen J. (James) Gingrich.

Services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 28 in the Harold M. Zimmerman And Son Funeral Home, 45 South Carlisle St., Greencastle, with Rev. James Hughes officiating.

Burial will be in the Rose Hill cemetery, Hagerstown.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home one hour before the service on Wednesday.

Jean Elizabeth Barnhart
Jean Elizabeth (Deardorff) Barnhart, 81, of Chesapeake Drive, Cottage 304-D, Quincy Village, Quincy, and formerly of Greencastle, died at 3:25 a.m. Sunday, March 18, 2007 in the Waynesboro Hospital. She was in failing health for the past several years and critically ill for the past week.

Born May 22, 1925 in Shady Grove, she was the daughter of the late John Wilbur and Catherine J. (Brown) Deardorff. She lived her early life in Waynesboro, but most of her life was lived in Greencastle.

Mrs. Barnhart graduated from Greencastle High School with the Class of 1943.

She and her husband of over 58 years, Cyrus Joseph "CJ" Barnhart, were married May 28, 1948 in St. Paul's Evangelical United Brethren Church, Hagerstown, Md. by Pastor F. Berry Plummer. They moved to Quincy Retirement Community in 1994.

Mrs. Barnhart worked for the Board of Rations in Mercersburg during World War II. Then, from Nov. 15, 1945 through June 16, 1958, she did clerical work at Fairchild Aircraft Manufacturing in Hagerstown.

While living in Greencastle, she was a member of Grace United Church of Christ.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by a sister, Audrey D. Broyles of Waynesboro; and a number of cousins.

Private services were held at the convenience of the family.

It was her request to have no public viewing.

Memorial contributions may be made to, Benevolent Care Fund of Quincy United Methodist Home, P.O. Box 128, Quincy, PA 17247.

Arrangements were handled by Grove-Bowersox Funeral Home, Waynesboro.

Edward N. Jakoby
Edward N. Jakoby, 92, of 141 N. Carlisle St., Greencastle, died at 8:30 a.m., Thursday, March 8, 2007 at The Village Of Laurel Run, Fayetteville, where he had been a resident for the past two weeks. Born Feb. 12, 1915 in Perkiomen, he was the son of the late Julius and Hermina (Krasztl) Jakoby.

Delores L. Glaser
Delores L. Glaser, 70, of 3385 W. View Circle, Greencastle, died at 7:44 p.m. Thursday March 8, 2007 in the emergency room of the Chambersburg Hospital, Chambersburg. Born Nov. 27, 1936 in Fannettsburg, she was a daughter of the late Vinton S. and Velma J. Barnett Cowan.

Kenneth H. Frey
Kenneth H. Frey, 79, of 10149 Mercersburg Road, Mercersburg, died at 9:02 p.m. Monday March 19, 2007 in his home.

Born Oct. 29, 1927 in the Chambersburg, area, he was the son of the late Norman and Esther (Siegrist) Frey.

He was a career farmer in the Mercersburg area and was employed at the Chambersburg Farm Service for approximately 15 years.

Mr. Frey was an active member of the Upton Church Of The Brethren. He served as a minister for the Upton congregation and also the former Back Creek Church Of The Brethren congregation.

He and his wife, Anna Mary (Meyers) Frey were married July 20, 1948 near Lemasters.

In addition to his wife of 58 years, he is survived by a daughter, Marian (wife of Shannon) Negley of Auburn, Maine; two sons, Lynn Frey of Mercersburg, and Loren (husband of Sherri) Frey of Hagerstown, Md.; two sisters, Margaret Cordell of Chambersburg, and Erma Weber of Maugansville, Md.; 11 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by four brothers, Melvin Frey, Merle Frey, Richard Frey and Elwood Frey.

Services were held the morning of Saturday, March 24, in the Upton Church Of The Brethren, with Ministers Dennis Sollenberger, Duane Hawbaker and John Shelly officiating.

Burial was in the Meyers cemetery, near Mercersburg.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be given in his memory to the Cumberland Valley Relief Center, 4225 Molly Pitcher Hwy South Chambersburg, PA 17201.

Arrangements were handled by the Harold M. Zimmerman And Son Funeral Home, Greencastle.

Frances M. Bartles
Frances M. Bartles, 88, a resident of Menno Haven, Chambersburg, for nearly two years and formerly of 1115 Mason Dixon Road, Greencastle, died at 9:30 a.m. Saturday March 24, 2007 in the nursing home.

Born Nov. 10, 1918 in State Line, Pa. she was the daughter of the late Jacob Allen and Lillie Mae (Shank) Binkley.

She worked at the former GEM Garment Co., Greencastle, and the former Stanley Co., Chambersburg.

Mrs. Bartles was a member of the Trinity United Church Of Christ, State Line. She helped make crafts for the church bazaars and enjoyed crocheting, bowling and traveling.

She and her husband, A. Stanley Bartles, were married March 12, 1938. He died Nov. 22, 1996.

She is survived by a daughter, Elouise M. Statler of Mechanicsburg; a son Richard E. Bartles of Greencastle; three sisters, Elsie L. Koons, a resident of Menno Haven Chambersburg, Beulah C. Overcash of Chambersburg and Anna Belle Reeves of Merritt Island, Fla.; three grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by three brothers, Paul Leroy Binkley, Ralph William Binkley and Harold Franklin Binkley; and an infant sister, Dorothea Irene Binkley.

Services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, March 28 in the Harold M. Zimmerman And Son Funeral Home, 45 S. Carlisle St., Greencastle, with Rev. Edwin Higginbottom officiating.

Burial will be in the Cedar Hill cemetery, Greencastle.

Edward J. Slabik
Edward J. Slabik, 82, of 106 West Walter Ave., Greencastle, died Tuesday, March 20, 2007 at 6 a.m. in ManorCare Health Services, Chambersburg, where he was a resident for the past three weeks. Born Nov. 6, 1924, in Philadelphia, he was the son of the late Frank and Anna (Mroz) Slabik.

Lois Hovis Cressler
Lois Hovis Cressler, 68, 307 West King St., Shippensburg, died Monday, March 19, 2007 in her home.

Born March 27, 1938 in Waynesboro, she was a daughter of the late John E. and Madeline Helfrick Hovis.

She was a 1956 graduate of the Shippensburg High School and a 1959 graduate of the Washington County, Md. Hospital School of Nursing. After graduating from nursing school, she worked for Dr. Albert Freeman for a short time prior to her marriage.

She was a 50-year member of Christ United Methodist Church, where she was a former trustee.

She was also a member of the Washington County Hospital School of Nursing Alumni Association, Shippensburg Civic Club, First Court Chapter 470 Order of Eastern Star and the Shippensburg Historical Society, where she was membership chairman.

Mrs. Cressler was an avid sports fan, and enjoyed flowers and gardening and spending time with her husband, children and grandchildren.

In addition to her husband of 46 years, William H. Cressler, Sr., she is survived by children, William H. Cressler Jr. and wife Jamie, Carla C. (Mrs. Thomas) Lynch Jr. and Angela C. (Mrs. Trent) Kuhn, all of Shippensburg; her sister, Jacqueline H. (Mrs. Louis M.) Barlup, Jr., Waynesboro; and grandchildren, Emily, Shae and Thomas, III, Lynch and Madeline and Brady Kuhn.

Services were held Sunday, March 25 in Christ United Methodist Church, Shippensburg, with Rev. Dr. Susan Halverstadt officiating.

Burial was in Spring Hill cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to Christ United Methodist Church, Budget Fund, 47 East King Street, Shippensburg, Pa. 17257.

Arrangements were handled by Fogelsanger-Bricker Funeral Home, Inc., Shippensburg.

Gary W. Snyder
Gary W. Snyder, 60, of 1317 Park Circle, Chambersburg, died at 10:35 p.m. Wednesday, March 21, 2007 in Chambersburg Hospital.

Born Nov. 30, 1946 in Washington County, Md., he was a son of Ramona Zimmerman Helsel of Chambersburg and the late John A. Snyder.

As a boy, Gary enjoyed sports and was a Boy Scout. He graduated from North Hagerstown High School, and then served in the United States Navy.

He had been employed with the former Fairchild Industries, Hagerstown, Md. and he was a member of B.P.O. Elks 600, Chambersburg.

Mr. Snyder was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed camping, hiking and kayaking. Years ago he was active with the Washington County Ambulance Service. He also enjoyed long rides on his motorcycle and a good round of golf.

In addition to his mother, he is survived by a son, Joshua W. Snyder of Philadelphia; two brothers, Jeffrey A. Snyder of San Diego, Calif. and Michael L. Snyder of Hagerstown; a sister, Theda D. Doleman of Chambersburg; his step- Father, Phil Helsel of Chambersburg; and a step-brother, Wesley Burnette of Middletown, Md.

Services were held the morning of Monday, March 26 in the Chapel of Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home, Chambersburg, with Pastor Carl Kniss officiating.

Durwerd Winston Miller
Durwerd Winston Miller, 76, of Greencastle, died, Thursday, March 22, 2007 in the Chambersburg Hospital. Born, April 13, 1930 in Washington County, Md., he was the son of the late, Harry T. and Nellie D. (Taylor) Miller. Mr. Miller retired in 1984 after 35 years of service as a Regional Superintendent of Stations with Conrail.

William A. Diehl
William A. Diehl, 82, of 159 Pensinger Road, Greencastle, died at 7:20 a.m., Wednesday, March 21, 2007 in his home.

Born Aug. 2, 1924 in Shady Grove, he was the daughter of the late William A. and Lottie (Henneberger) Diehl. He was a lifelong resident of the Greencastle area.

Mr. Diehl was a graduate of Greencastle High School with the Class of 1942.

He served in the United States Army during World War II where he was captured Dec. 19, 1944 and held as a prisoner of war for six months during the Battle of the Bulge. For his service, he was the recipient of the Purple Heart, POW Medal, Bronze Star, World War II Victory Medal, as well as various other medals.

He and his wife of 55 years, Anna Lee (Pensinger) Diehl, were married Jan. 11, 1952 in Chambersburg. They had lived at their present residence since October 1953.

Mr. Diehl was employed as Vice President of Operations for Fry Coal & Stone Company and Martin Marietta Aggregates, both of Mercersburg, and for Koppers Company and Culpeper Stone Company, both of Fredericksburg, Va. He retired in 1986 after 40 years of service.

He was a member of Evangelical Lutheran Church, Greencastle, where he served on the church council and as usher.

Mr. Diehl was also a charter member Harry D. Ziegler VFW Post 6319, Frank L. Carbaugh American Legion Post 373, Mt. Pisgah Lodge 443 Free and Accepted Masons, and Retired Men's Group, all of Greencastle; Harrisburg Consistory Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite of Freemasonry, Harrisburg, Zembo Shrine, American Ex-Prisoners of War Association and Veterans of the Battle of the Bulge.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by two  daughters, Natalie M. (wife of Charles) Shriver of Clarksburg, Tenn. and Susan A. (wife of Robert) Snowberger of Chambersburg; one son, William L. Diehl of Waynesboro; two grandsons, Andrew Shriver and Kyle Snowberger; three sisters, Marie Conrad, Frances M. Diehl and Betty J. Fisher, all of Greencastle; and a number of nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Catherine Carman and Martha Smith.

Services were held the morning of Saturday, March 24 in Evangelical Lutheran Church, Greencastle, with the Revs. Martin H. Horn and Donald M. Bohn officiating.

Burial followed in Cedar Hill cemetery, Greencastle, with military graveside honors conducted by the Honor Guard of Charles Nitterhouse VFW Post 1599, Chambersburg.

Masonic services were conducted by Mt. Pisgah Lodge 443 the evening of Friday, March 23, in Miller-Bowersox Funeral Home, 521 South Washington Street, Greencastle

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Meadow Dialysis, 12931 Oak Hill Avenue, Hagerstown, MD 21742 or Hospice of the Good Shepherd, 2700 Luther Drive, Chambersburg, PA 17201.
