Merle G. Everts
Merle G. Everts, 89, of 3303 Sportsman Road, Greencastle, died at 10:54 a.m. Friday, Nov. 10, 2006 in the Waynesboro Hospital.
Born July 20, 1917 in Gilman, Iowa, he was the son of the late Joseph Samuel and Ella Maye Alice (McGrew) Everts.
In his younger years he worked at the former Walck Hatchery, Greencastle, and retired from the Greencastle-Antrim School District, having worked as a custodian in the Shady Grove School.
He was a member for over 70 years of the Evangelical Lutheran Church, Greencastle, where he taught Sunday School, served as Junior Sunday School Superintendent and on the church council.
Mr. Everts started his music performing in 1938 and he was known as the "Little Man With The Big Guitar From Kentucky." He sang with the Silvertone Melody Boys, Hilltop Harmonizers and performed on the local radio stations of WARK, WJEJ and WAYZ. He announced with Cousin Harry on the former Greencastle WKSL radio station and performed on a Harrisonburg, Va. television show. In his later years he performed at local hymn sings with his daughters, granddaughters and great-granddaughters.
He also participated in the Greencastle Rescue Hose Co. 1 Minstrel Show.
Mr. Everts was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, having served in the European Theater of Operations and was part of a music ensemble while he was in Germany.
He was a life member of the Frank L. Carbaugh American Legion Post 373, Greencastle.
He and his wife, Hylda A. (Sipes) Everts were married Dec. 25, 1937 in Greencastle.
Mr. Everts was the last of his immediate family.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by three daughters, L. Faye Mentzer, Linda M. Murray and Juanita K. Everts, all of Greencastle; five grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by four brothers.
Services were held the morning of Tuesday, Nov. 14 in the Evangelical Lutheran Church, Greencastle with Rev. Martin H. Horn officiating.
Burial was in the Union cemetery, McConnellsburg.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be given to the Memorial Fund of the Evangelical Lutheran Church, 130 N. Washington St., Greencastle, Pa. 17225.

Cynthia L. Hawbaker
Cynthia L. (Schaeffer) Hawbaker, 53, 1288 Cherry Tree Lane, Scotland, died at 12:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 16, 2006 in her home, following an extended illness.
Born May 1, 1953, in Jackson Township, Lebanon County, she was the daughter of Grace L. (Hunsicker) Schaeffer of Myerstown, and the late Ralph A. Schaeffer.
She graduated in 1971 from Eastern Lebanon County (ELCO) High School and then received her Bachelor of Science degree in Individual and Family Studies from The Pennsylvania State University in 1975.
She and her husband, Stephen L. "Steve" Hawbaker, were married on June 14, 1975 in Myerstown. They moved to the present residence in November 1984.
Mrs. Hawbaker started working with Lutheran Social Services in 1976 as Director of its Homemaker, Home Health Aid Program and later as social worker for Lutheran Home Care and Hospice. She was also involved with the start up of Luther Ridge as its initial marketing representative. She then became Director of Activities at Menno Haven, Chambersburg from 1990 until 1995.
In 1995 she became the Executive Director of United Way of Franklin County, a position she held until June of 2006. While at United Way she instituted a number of new programs, including May of Caring and Gifts in Kind.
During her career she also served on a number of boards and community organizations, including The Penn State Mont Alto Advisory Board, Letterkenny Industrial Development Authority - as Vice Chair, The Caledonia Theatre Company, WITF, Mercersburg Area Community Chorus, Penn State Club of Franklin County and Healthy Communities Partnership, among others.
Mrs. Hawbaker was honored in 2003 as a Centennial Fellow by the Penn State Mont Alto campus on the occasion of its 100th anniversary and she was also a recipient of the Chambersburg Rotary Club's Excel Award in 2003 and the Rotary International Centennial Service Award for Professional Excellence for 2004-2005.
She enjoyed sailing, cross country skiing, traveling, Penn State activities and singing, especially in the Mercersburg Area Community Chorus and the choir at St. Johns United Church of Christ, Chambersburg, where she was a church member.
In addition to her mother and husband, she is survived by a daughter, Emily B. Hawbaker of Philadelphia; a son Benjamin F. Hawbaker and daughter-in-law Anna E. Hawbaker of Boston, Mass; two brothers, Charles Schaeffer of Elizabethtown and Paul Schaeffer of Myerstown; two sisters, Betty Rittle of Myerstown and Shirley Davis of Hummelstown; and a number of nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 25 in St. Johns United Church of Christ, 1811 Lincoln Way East, Chambersburg, with Revs. Stephen W. Hoffman and Courtney Mys officiating.
The family will receive friends one hour prior to services in the church.

Harold Frey Crider
Harold Frey Crider, 75, of 8291 Brown's Mill Road, Greencastle, died at 9:50 p.m. Thursday Nov. 16, 2006 at Menno Haven, Chambersburg, where he was a resident since Monday. He had been in declining health the past two years.
Born April 18, 1931 in Chambersburg, he was the son of the late John H. and Lizzie M. (Frey) Crider.
Mr. Crider was a lifelong dairy farmer.
He was a member of the Cedar Grove Mennonite Church, Greencastle, where he served as song leader.
Mr. Crider was a charter member of the Kauffman Ruritan Club; member of the Mercersburg Chorus; and served on the Greencastle-Antrim School Board.
He was active in leadership in the Holstein Association at the local, state and national levels. Mr. Crider was recognized in 1995 as a master farmer and was inducted into the Pennsylvania Holstein Hall of Fame, State College.
Mr. Crider was also a member of the Mennonite Historical Society and the Meadowlarks singing group at Menno Haven.
He and his wife, Leona Grace (Horst) Crider were married Jan. 30, 1954 in Marion.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by two daughters, Eileen (wife of Stanley) Flenner of State Line and Marion (wife of David) Weldon of Carlisle; three sons, Roger Crider (husband of Mary Kathleen) Crider of Chambersburg, Rodney (husband of Rhoda) Crider of St. Thomas and Aldean (husband of Dawn) Crider of Marion; one brother, J. Eldon Crider of Chambersburg; three sisters, Thelma Diller of Shippensburg, Elinor Showalter of Chambersburg and Janet Crider of Chambersburg; 11 grandchildren, Scott Jones (husband of Michelle), Gail Glenner, Dawn Jones, Melanie Flenner Ott, Andrew Crider, Alyssa Crider, Brandon Crider, Lucy Crider, Brittney Crider, Grace Crider and Bethany Crider; and three great-grandchildren, Joyce, Isaiah and Isabella Jones.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother and one sister.
Services were held the morning of Monday, Nov. 20 in Cedar Grove Mennonite Church, Greencastle with Rev. Stephen Fretz officiating.
Burial was in the Brown's Mill cemetery, Kauffman.

Betty Jane (Mowen) Brechbiel, 79, a resident of Manor- Care Health Services, Chambersburg, and formerly of 8685 Rabbit Road North, Greencastle, died at 5:45 p.m., Friday, Nov. 17, 2006 in the nursing home.
Wayne C. Moser
Wayne C. Moser, 55, of Greencastle, was pronounced dead at 9:15 a.m., Wednesday, Nov. 15, 2006, in his home. He had been in failing health for the past year.
Bertha E. Flannery
Bertha E. (Linkletter) Flannery, 79, of 10297 Garnes Road, Mercersburg, died at 6:37 p.m., Monday, Nov. 13, 2006 in the Chambersburg Hospital.
Born Sept. 13, 1927, in Kingston, N.J., she was the daughter of the late Percy and Hermine (Knodel) Linkletter.
She was the wife of Richard J. Flannery, whom she married Jan. 10, 1948 in East Millstone, N.J. They moved to the local area in 1973.
Mrs. Flannery was a homemaker all of her life.
She enjoyed spending time with her family, flowers and working on embroidery.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by three daughters, Nancy Szymanski of Clinton, N.J., Diane Warmke of Hillsborough, N.J. and Kathleen Daugherty of Mercersburg; and one son, Michael Flannery of Mercersburg; nine grandsons; seven great-grandsons; and one sister, Audry Bijl of Forked River, N.J.
Services and burial will be private at the convenience of the family with Dr. W. David Kent officiating.

Fannie B. Martin, 98, of 18006 Horst Lane, Hagerstown, Md. died at 1:15 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 25, 2006 in her home near Maugansville.

Harry E. "Junie" Slusher Jr., 82, of 14719 Daley Road, Hagerstown, Md. died at 4:25 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 21, 2006 in the Washington County Hospital following a short illness.

Rhoda H. Hege, 96, a resident of the Mennonite Home in Maugansville, Md. died at 9 a.m. Sunday, Nov. 26, 2006 in the home.
Mary Jane Fitz
Mary Jane (Brown) Fitz, 83, of 58 Chadwick Dr., Greencastle, and formerly of Shady Grove, died at 11:05 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 23, 2006 in Quincy United Methodist Home.
Born May 18, 1923 in Coatesville, she was the daughter of the late Ira L. and Mildred C. (George) Brown.
Mrs. Fitz was a homemaker and in her earlier life was employed as the first music teacher in the Antrim Township schools from 1945 till 1951.
She was a member for over 50 years of the Mt. Vernon Chapter 398 Order Of The Eastern Star, Waynesboro.
Mrs. Fitz was a member of the Greencastle Presbyterian Church, where she had sung on the church choir.
She was also a member of the Waynesboro Hospital Auxiliary; the Ladies Auxiliary of the Harry D. Zeigler V.F.W. Post 6319, Greencastle; and of the Greencastle-Antrim Loyal daughters.
She was a graduate of the former Paradise High School, Paradise, and was a 1945 graduate of the Lebanon Valley College, Annville.
She and her husband, Charles E. Fitz were married June 17, 1950 in Paradise. He died July 23, 2001.
She is survived by two sons, Charles E. Fitz Jr. of Harrisburg and William B. Fitz of Greencastle; two brothers, I. Lee Brown Jr. of Paradise and Wilson G. Brown of Seaford, Del.; a sister, Evelyn D. Frew of Lancaster; and six grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a grandson, Christian David Fitz, and a brother, Robert W. Brown.
Services were held the morning of Monday, Nov. 27 in the Greencastle Presbyterian Church with Pastor Darlene Kline officiating.
Burial was in the Brown's Mill cemetery, Kauffman.

John Franklin Hughes, 82, of Olney, Md. died Saturday, Nov. 25, 2006 in the Montgomery General Hospital, Olney.
Wilbur E. Mummert
Wilbur E. Mummert, 95, a resident of Homewood Retirement Center in Williamsport, Md. since October 2006 died at 7:45 a.m. Monday Dec. 4, 2006 in the retirement center. He had formerly lived at the Qunicy United Methodist Village and before moving to Quincy he had lived on Orchard Circle, Greencastle, for a number of years.
Janice L. Rosenberry
Janice L. Rosenberry, 60, of 2112 Black Gap Road, Fayetteville, died at 5:25 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 2, 2006 in her home.
Born Feb. 19, 1946 in Chambersburg, she was the daughter of the late Alonza and Hazel M. (Gipe) Jones.
She and her husband, Martin L. Rosenberry, were married Aug. 24, 1963 in Chambersburg.
Mrs. Rosenberry was a homemaker and performed house cleaning services.
She enjoyed crocheting.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by two daughters, Patricia A. Rosenberry and Debra S. Rosenberry, both at home; two sisters, Virginia Ott and Helen Stewart, both of Chambersburg; a brother, Robert E. Jones Sr. of Martinsburg, W. Va.; several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by an infant brother, Glenn Eber Jones.
Services were held the morning of Tuesday, Dec. 5 in Antrim Mennonite Church, Greencastle, with the Ministry Brethren of H. Lynn Martin, LaRay P. Martin, Delbert L. Eby and Robert L. Shank officiating.
Burial was in the adjoining church cemetery.
