Pennsylvania Obituary and Marriage Records, 1947-2010

Bruce K. Hockenberry
Bruce K. "Huck" Hockenberry, 84, of 29 West Catherine St., Chambersburg, died on Saturday evening, July 22, 2006 in his home.

Born June 12, 1922 in Willow Hill, he was the son of the late Franklin L. and Almeda E. (Doyle) Hockenberry.

He was the widower of the late Goldie (Carlin) Hockenberry, whom he married in 1943. She died on Aug. 24, 2002.

Mr. Hockenberry was retired from the former Chambersburg Engineering Company, where he worked for approximately 43 years as a crane operator.

An active outdoorsman, he enjoyed hunting and fishing. He could often be seen on his porch chatting and joking with family, neighbors, passers-by, and friends from the Chambersburg Police Department.

He is survived by three children, Marlene K. (wife of Gary) Mull of Fayetteville, Nancy L. (wife of Fred) Lindsay of Greencastle and Roger L. (and wife Patricia) Hockenberry of Lewisberry; one brother, Mac Hockenberry of Fort Loudon; 10 grandchildren; 15 great grandchildren; five step great grandchildren; and one step great grandson.

He was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Darlene Faye; one great grandson; and 10 brothers and sisters.

Services were held the afternoon of Wednesday, July 26 in Fair Ridge Assembly of God, Shade Gap with Rev. Daniel Fox officiating.

Burial followed in the adjoining church cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made in lieu of flowers to the Chambersburg Police Department, 116 South 2nd Street, Chambersburg, PA 17201.

Arrangements were handled by Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home, Chambersburg.

Jessie L. Hykes

Jessie L. Hykes, 26, of 506 West Main St., Waynesboro, was pronounced dead at 11:15 a.m., Tuesday, July 18, 2006, at the scene of a train and automobile accident on Milnor Road, Greencastle.

Born Feb. 16, 1980 in Waynesboro, he was the son of Mark W. and Nora J. (Moats) Hykes. He lived all of his life in the Waynesboro area.

He graduated from Waynesboro High School with the Class of 1999.

Mr. Hykes was employed for many years at Hardees, Waynesboro. He was last employed at Save-A-Lot grocery store, Waynesboro.

He enjoyed spending time with his nephews and friends.

In addition to his parents, he is survived by one sister, Peggy A. Stefenelli of Waynesboro; one brother, Kevin S. Hykes of Waynesboro; his maternal grandmother, Betty J. Moats of Waynesboro; paternal grandmother, Dorothy R. Hykes, a resident of the Village of Laurel Run, Fayetteville; paternal grandfather, Leslie A. Hykes of Greencastle; paternal step-grandmother, Ethel Hykes of Greencastle; special friend, Misty Beers of Greencastle; 13 aunts and uncles; three nephews; and a number of cousins.

He was preceded in death by his maternal grandfather, Meeris Moats.

Services were held the afternoon of Friday, July 21 in Grove-Bowersox Funeral Home, Waynesboro, with Pastor Bill Schuit officiating.

Burial followed in Green Hill cemetery, Waynesboro.

Memorial contributions may be made to the family to help defray funeral expenses to Mark and Nora Hykes, 506 W. Main St., Waynesboro, Pa. 17268.

Betty M. Statler
Betty Marie Statler, 81, of 318 Stonegate Circle North, Chambersburg, and formerly of Williamson, died at 10:20 p.m. Saturday, July 29, 2006 in ManorCare Health Services, Chambersburg.

Born April 29, 1925 in Antrim Township, she was the daughter of the late William and Elsie (Gift) Fitz.

Mrs. Statler was Postmaster of the Williamson Post Office for 23 and a half years, retiring in 2000. She had also worked in the school cafeterias of the Tuscarora School District.

She was a member of the St. Lukes Lutheran Church, Williamson, where she was a member of WELCA, the choir, served as a Sunday School teacher and helped with many church meals.

Mrs. Statler was also a member of the Franklin-Fulton County Postmasters Association.

She attended the St. Thomas Township High School.

She and her husband, Donald E. Statler, were married June 24, 1943 in Hagerstown, Md.

In addition to her husband of 63 years, she is survived by two sons, Dennis E. Statler of Greencastle and Duane E. Statler of Chambersburg; two  daughters, Melverna K. Brewer of Chambersburg and Marilyn S. Houck of Williamson; a sister, Beulah Barnes of Greencastle; four grandchildren; four great grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by an infant daughter; infant son; one brother, Roy Fitz; one sister, Margaret Goetz; and a foster sister, Marie McClain.

Services were held the morning of Tuesday, Aug. 1 in the Zimmerman and Son Funeral Home, Greencastle with Rev. Alan Wilson officiating.

Burial was in the Cedar Hill cemetery, Greencastle.

The family requests that flowers be omitted and memorial contributions may be given to the St. Lukes Lutheran Church C/O Jenny Keller Treasurer, 261 Ledge Dr. Chambersburg, Pa. 17201 or to the WKOC Relay For Life Team C/O Marilyn Houck P.O. Box 82 Williamson, Pa. 17270.

Thomas G. Stouffer
Thomas G. Stouffer, 72, formerly of 66 Hillen Lane, Chambersburg, died Monday, July 24, 2006 in Providence Place.

Glenn Bemisderfer
Glenn Jacob Bemisderfer, 79, of Huntington Woods Dr., Welcome Community, N.C. died Monday, May 15, 2006 in Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center after an illness of five weeks.

Patricia A. Wenger
Patricia A. "Pat" Wenger, 66, formerly of 5755 Charlestown Road, Mercersburg, died on Sunday, July 30, 2006 in Manor Care Health Services, Chambersburg.

Emmert E. Gordon Jr.
Emmert E. Gordon Jr., 71, of Greencastle, died at 4:09 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 1, 2006, in Chambersburg Hospital. He died following a brief illness.

Mary Lucille Ball
Mary Lucille (Huff) Ball, 87, of 442 Moss Springs Ave., Greencastle, died at 5:35 a.m., Monday, July 31, 2006, at Waynesboro Hospital, Waynesboro. She died after a brief illness.

W. Eugene Neil
W. Eugene Neil, 60, of 621 Overcash Road, Chambersburg, died Monday morning, Aug. 14, 2006, following a year-long battle with cancer.

John H. Poe
John H. Poe, 90, formerly of 13457 Mercersburg Road, Greencastle, died at 5 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 13, 2006 at Manor Care Health Services, Chambersburg. He had been in failing health for the past two weeks.

Hazel M. Young
Hazel M. Young, 71, of 466 South Carlisle St., Greencastle, died at 2:20 p.m. Monday, Aug. 14, 2006 in the home of her daughter, Suzanne J. Morganthal, of 11870 Village Heights, Zullinger.

Born April 28, 1935 in Williamsport, Md., she was the daughter of the late Reuben J. and Mabel Irene (Shockey) Ricker.

She was a homemaker and had worked at various local businesses including the Harry D. Zeigler V.F.W. Post and the Frank L. Carbaugh American Legion Post, both of Greencastle.

Mrs. Young was a member of the Otterbein United Brethren Church of Greencastle. She was also a life member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Harry D. Zeigler V.F.W. Post 6319 Greencastle.

She and her husband, Charles Earl Young, were married Oct. 13, 1974 in Greencastle.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by a daughter, Suzanne J. Morganthal of Zullinger; two sons, Kevin J. Morganthal of Garner, N. C. and David E. Morganthal of Naples, Fla.; three sisters, Betty Bruno and Mary Ommert, both of Chambersburg and Paula Ricker of Greencastle; two brothers, Buddy Ricker of Stephens City, Va. and John Ricker of Yuma, Ariz.; stepchildren, Charles Young Jr.of Malden, Mass., Paul Young of Lynn, Mass. and Linda Martocchio of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.; eight grandchildren; eight stepgrandchildren; five greatgrandchildren; and five stepgreat grandchildren.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a son Gary Morganthal Sr. in 1999; a grandson, David R. Morganthal in 2001; and by two sisters, Ruth Hockensmith and Vonny Mowen.

Services were held the morning of Thursday, Aug. 17 in Otterbein United Brethren Church , Greencastle, with Rev. David G. Rawley officiating.

Burial was in the Mt. Zion cemetery, Quincy.

Arrangements were handled by Harold M. Zimmerman And Son Funeral Home, Greencastle.

The Ladies Auxiliary of the Greencastle V.F.W. held a memorial service at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 17 in the funeral home.

Emma Margaret (Young) Beegle
Emma Margaret (Young) Beegle, 86, of Winding Knob Road, Breezewood, died on Monday, Aug. 21, 2006, in her home in Breezewood.

Born Sept. 11, 1919, in Tatesville, she was a daughter of the late Rosa (Spade) Young and Earl C. Young Sr.

She and her husband, Dorsey Beegle Jr., married on March 13, 1940, in Preston City, Va. He died in a auto accident while traveling through North Carolina in 1966, leaving Emma critically injured. Her husband, daughter Judy, and son-in-law Dennis, were all fatally injured in the accident.

She is survived by six siblings, Earl Young Jr. of Pittsburgh, Evelyn Beegle of Phoenix, Ariz., Ernest Young of Greencastle and Raymond Young, Ruth Chamberlain and Harold Young, all of Breezewood; several nieces and nephews; and her caregivers, Carol Clark, Gloria Shoemaker, Ruth Chamberlain and Tara Vineyard, her niece.

In addition to her parents, husband, daughter and son-inlaw, she was preceded in death by two brothers, John Young and Charles Young, and two sisters, Sara North and Dorothy Ensley.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday, Aug. 25 in the Dalla Valle Funeral Chapel, Breezewood, with the Rev. Robert R. Robertson officiating.

Friends are welcome from 2 to 9 p.m. Thursday in the funeral home and one hour prior to services in the chapel. Burial will follow in Everett cemetery.

Norman Douglas Leizear
Norman Douglas Leizear, 38, of 11070 Williamsport Pike, Greencastle, died unexpectedly at 5:30 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 20, 2006, in his home.

Born March 30, 1968, in Takoma Park, Md., he was the son of William C. and Deborah D. (Downs) Leizear of Greencastle.

Mr. Leizear was a graduate of Walt Whitman High School in Bethesda, Md.

He was employed in the maintenance department at Food Lion Distribution Center in Greencastle and previously was a plumber in the Frederick, Md., area and for Leahy Plumbing of Bethesda.

He was a member of the Frontier County Gun Club and enjoyed hunting.

In addition to his parents, he is survived by a wife, Terri L. (Stevens) Leizear of Frederick; four children, Christina Nixon of Cockeysville, Md., and Danny Shorten, Russell Shorten and Joshua Shorten, all of Frederick; two brothers, Brian Leizear of Frederick and Robert Leizear of Tallahassee, Fla.; three nieces and two nephews.

A memorial service will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday Aug. 24 in Harold M. Zimmerman and Son Funeral Home, Greencastle.

There will be no viewing.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Norman Douglas Leizear Memorial Fund in care of Grove Community Federal Credit Union, 11125 Bemisderfer Road, Greencastle, Pa. 17225.

Robert E. Helmuth
Robert E. Helmuth, 76, of 329 S. Washington St., Greencastle, died at 8:11 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 17, 2006 in his home.

Born Dec. 7, 1929 in Greencastle, he was the son of the late Frank E. and Hazel V. (Talhelm) Helmuth.

He was a veteran of the United States Air Force, serving during the Korean Conflict.

In his earlier years, he was employed by Lockheed Martin in Marietta, Ga. and then he was self-employed in the aircraft industry.

Mr. Helmuth was a member of the Clay Hill Union Sunday School, near Chambersburg, PA. He was also a member of the Harry D. Zeigler V.F.W. Post 6319, Greencastle.

He was an avid golfer and enjoyed attending book sales.

Mr. Helmuth was a 1949 graduate of Greencastle High School and attended the University of Maryland.

He is survived by three  daughters, Tina Helmuth of Roger, Ark., Terry Hendrickson of Wetumpka, Ala. and Toni Erickson of Glendale, Ariz.; two sons, Eddie Helmuth of Loxahhatchee, Fla. and Greg Kielton of Fort Lauderdale, Fla.; a sister, Dorothy L. Minter of Washington Boro; a brother, John W. Helmuth of Waynesboro; six grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

A memorial service was held the morning of Tuesday, Aug. 22 in the Clay Hill Union Sunday School, near Chambersburg, with Rev. Randy Martin officiating.

Burial was in Brown's Mill cemetery, Kauffman.

In lieu of flowers memorial contributions can be made to the Clay Hill Union Sunday School, c/o LaRhue Myers, P.O. Box 12, Shady Grove, PA 17256.

Arrangements were handled by the Harold M. Zimmerman & Son Funeral Home, Greencastle.

Gerald H. "Sonny" Gelsinger
Gerald H. "Sonny" Gelsinger, 71, of P.O Box 114 - 12146 Gearhart Road, Shady Grove died Saturday afternoon, Aug. 19, 2006 in the emergency room of the Waynesboro Hospital.

Born Aug. 5, 1935 in Antrim Township, he was the son of the late Kenneth and Catherine (Davis) Gelsinger.

He worked at Grove Manufacturing Co., Shady Grove for 19 years and had retired from Rodgers Pallet Co., Shady Grove.

Mr. Gelsinger was a member of Hollowell Brethren In Christ Church near Waynesboro and had attended the Greencastle Senior Center.

He served in the Pennsylvania Army National Guard in Waynesboro.

He and his wife, Carole L. (Walck) Gelsinger were married Sept. 7, 1957 in Hagerstown, Md.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by two  daughters, Dodie J. Starliper of Marion and Kendra L. Koons of Greencastle; three sons, Robert E. Gelsinger of Waynesboro, Larry L. Gelsinger of Greencastle and Gary L. Gelsinger of Mercersburg; a brother, Marvin Gelsinger of Chambersburg; a sister, Geraldine Barnhart of Greencastle; and seven grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, Kenneth Gelsinger.

Services will be held at 2 p.m., Wednesday, Aug. 23 in the Harold M. Zimmerman And Son Funeral Home, 45 S. Carlisle St., Greencastle, with Pastor Michael Miller officiating.

Burial will be in the Cedar Hill cemetery, Greencastle.
