Pennsylvania Obituary and Marriage Records, 1947-2010

Janet L. (Myers) College Rotz

Janet L. (Myers) College Rotz, 87, a resident of ManorCare Health Services, Chambersburg, and formerly of 4757 Rotz Road, Chambersburg, died at 2:50 p.m., Saturday, April 8, 2006, in the nursing home.

Born May 15, 1918 in Greencastle, she was the daughter of the late Elmer J. and Bertha B. (Beard) Myers. She lived most of her life in the Greencastle area.

Mrs. Rotz attended Greencastle schools.

She and her first husband, the late Boyd W. College, were married on May 15, 1936 and resided at 155 East Madison St., Greencastle. Mr. College died in 1984. She married her second husband, Paul E. Rotz, on July 24, 1990. They have lived on Rotz Road in Chambersburg since the wedding.

Mrs. Rotz was a homemaker for most of her life. In the 1940's, she owned and operated Bow-Dur Kennels from her home. She enjoyed breeding and showing Pekingese dogs, winning numerous first place ribbons, best of breed and best of show trophies.

She was a member of Solomon's United Church of Christ, Chambersburg; the Antietam Humane Society, Waynesboro; the United States Humane Society; and the A.S.P.C.A.

Mrs. Rotz enjoyed writing poems for her family and friends. She also enjoyed knitting and crocheting.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by one son, Durbin B. College (and his wife Betty), of Waynesboro; two granddaughters, JoLinda Frey of Lewisbury and Kimberly Shank of Dillsburg; and three greatgranddaughters, Chelsey Frey, Kennedy Shank and McKenzie Shank.

In addition to her parents and first husband, she was preceded in death by an infant brother, Lester Myers.

Services were held the morning of Tuesday, April 11 in Miller-Bowersox Funeral Home, Greencastle, with Rev. Peter Emig officiating.

Burial followed in Cedar Hill cemetery, Greencastle.

Memorial contributions may be made to: The Antietam Humane Society, 8513 Lyons Road, Waynesboro, Pa. 17268, or Solomon's United Church of Christ, 1594 Swamp Fox Road, Chambersburg, Pa. 17201.

Mary C. (Miller) Wilson

Mary C. (Miller) Wilson, 98, of 11138 Worleytown Road, Greencastle, died at 4:17 p.m., Friday, April 28, 2006 at her home. She had been in failing health for several months.

Born April 17, 1908 in Edgemont, Md., she was the daughter of Walter J. and Annie (Martin) Miller. She spent her early life in Edgemont.

Mrs. Wilson attended Edgemont schools.

She and her husband, Orval J. Wilson, were married Sept. 28, 1927 in Greencastle. After marriage they lived in Baltimore, Md. before moving to their current residence in 1949. Mr. Wilson died Sept. 15, 1980.

Mrs. Wilson was a homemaker.

She was a member of Upton Church of the Brethren, Upton, where she participated in Women's Work Association and served as a Sunday School teacher.

She is survived by a daughter, Betty Stafford of Greencastle; a son, Terry L. Wilson of Hopewell, Va.; six grandchildren; five great grandchildren; four great great grandchildren; a sister, Anna Seibert, and a brother, Samuel Miller, both of Smithsburg, Md.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her brother, John Miller.

Services were held the morning of Tuesday, May 2 in Upton Church of the Brethren with Rev. Duane L. Hawbaker officiating.

Burial followed in the church cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Upton Church of the Brethren, c/o Dennis Sollenberger, 9358 Garnes Rd., Mercersburg, PA 17236.

J. Chalmers Young Jr.

J. Chalmers Young Jr., 80, a resident of the Morning Glory Retirement Home, State Line, Pa. for more than two years and formerly of 12802 Short Road, Greencastle, died at 7:40 p.m. Saturday, May 13, 2006 in the retirement home.

Born Jan. 25, 1926 in Chambersburg, he was the son of the late Jacob Chalmers Sr. and Ruth (Graybill) Young.

He was a life long dairy farmer.

Mr. Young was a member of the Welsh Run Church Of The Brethren, where he served as a deacon, church trustee and a Sunday School teacher for more than 50 years.

He was also a member of the former Board Of Associates of the Citizens National Bank, now Susquehanna Bank.

Mr. Young was a 1943 graduate of Greencastle High School.

He and his wife, Klee Jane (Etter) Young were married Feb. 18, 1950.

In addition to his wife of 56 years, he is survived by two sons, Jaye C. (husband of Julie) Young and Larry C. (husband of Cheryl) Young, both of Mercersburg; a daughter, Sue E. (wife of Mike) Hutzler of Inwood, W. Va.; a brother, Harold G. Young of Greencastle; nine grandchildren; and nine greatgrandchildren.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by an infant brother, Robert Young.

Services were held the morning of Wednesday, May 17 in Welsh Run Church Of The Brethren, Mercersburg, with Revs. Henry Hunsberger and Bill Spangler officiating.

Burial was in the adjoining church cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Welsh Run Church Of The Brethren cemetery Fund, C/O Clarence Martin, 4231 Lighthouse Road. Chambersburg, Pa. 17201.

Arrangements were handled by the Harold M. Zimmerman And Son Funeral Home, Greencastle.

Edgar Lloyd Spoonhour

Edgar L. "Red" Spoonhour, 78, died Monday, May 8, 2006 in Chambersburg Hospital.

Gloria Myers McCoy
Gloria Elizabeth Myers McCoy, 94, formerly of 803 Park Circle West, Chambersburg, and a former resident of Shank's Personal Care Home, Greencastle, died on Monday, May 8, 2006 in Falling Spring Nursing and Rehab Center.

Malcolm M. "Mac" Pettit Jr.

Malcolm M. "Mac" Pettit Jr., 70, of 57 Chadwick Drive, Greencastle, died at 8:35 a.m., Monday, May 22, 2006, at Chambersburg Hospital, Chambersburg. He had been ill for over two months and critically ill since Saturday.

Born Nov. 30, 1935 in Newfane, N.Y., he was the son of the late Malcolm M. Petit, Sr. and Valma H. (Hillman) Pettit. He spent his early life in Newfane.

He graduated from Newfane High School with the Class of 1954. He later graduated from Capital Institute of Technology, Washington D.C., with a bachelor's degree in engineering, with the Class of 1967.

Mr. Pettit served with the U.S. Army.

He and his wife, Callie J. (Quinn) Pettit, were married on May 31, 1986 in Gaithersburg, Md. They moved to Rockville, Md. and then Hagerstown, Md., where they lived for 15 years before moving to their current residence.

Mr. Pettit was employed by General Electric for seven years and later by IBM, Gaithersburg, Md., as an engineer before retiring in 1994 after 26 years of service.

He was a member of Beaver Creek Country Club, Hagerstown and the American Legion Post 211, Funkstown, Md.

Mr. Pettit enjoyed golfing and bowling.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by a daughter, Pattijean Strout of Gaithersburg; two sons, Michael J. Pettit of Fulton, Md. and L. James Pettit of Calias, Maine; a step-daughter, Tracy L. Weisner of Greencastle; three step-sons, Terry J. Knoblock of Wiley, Texas, Garland L. Knoblock of Hagerstown and Daniel Lee Knoblock of Greencastle; 12 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Services were held at the convenience of the family.

Arrangements were handled by Miller-Bowersox Funeral Home, Greencastle.

Wilbur R. Helman

Wilbur R. Helman, 81, of 8317 Buchanan Trail West, Mercersburg, died unexpectedly at 4:30 p.m. Monday, May 15, 2006 in his home.

Born May 13, 1925, in Waynesboro, he was a son of the late Roy and Mildred Fahrney Helman.

Mr. Helman was a life long dairy farmer retiring in 1999.

He was a member of Mt. Zion Lutheran Church, Little Cove.

Mr. Helman married Ruby G. Gordon Helman on April 8, 1948. She died Nov. 11, 1995. He is survived by a son, Paul

W. (husband of Marchia A.) Helman of Greencastle; two grandchildren, Derek Helman and Kylene (Mrs. Colin) Swain, both of Greencastle; two sisters, Dorothy Beltz and Faye (Mrs. Charles) Ulrich, both of Chambersburg.

In addition to his wife, Mr. Helman was preceded in death by a brother, Wayne Helman.

Services were held the afternoon of Friday, May 19 in Lininger-Fries Funeral Home, Mercersburg, with Rev. Dr. Daryl M. Elliott officiating.

Burial was in Fairview cemetery, Mercersburg.

W. Seibert Myers

W. Seibert Myers, 83, of 11991 Cool Hollow Road, Greencastle, died at 6:05 p.m. Friday, May 26, 2006 in the Falling Spring Nursing And Rehabilitation Center, Chambersburg, where he was a resident for the last two weeks.

Born Nov. 17, 1922 in Montgomery Township, he was the son of the late Walter N. and Esther Francis (Dick) Myers.

In his earlier years he farmed and then worked at the former Fairchild Aircraft, Hagerstown. He was later employed as a cabinet maker for Waynesboro Builders Supply and Maugansville Planing Mill and was last employed for 16 years at Foremost Industries as a cabinet installer.

Mr. Myers was a longtime member of the Macedonia United Brethren Church near Greencastle, where he served as a Sunday School teacher, board member, lay leader and as a home visitation member.

He enjoyed writing poetry and being with his family.

He and his wife, Nellie C. (Witmer) Myers were married Sept. 6, 1942 near Greencastle.

In addition to his wife of 63 years, he is survived by four sons, Walter Calvin Myers of St. Thomas, John David Myers of Marion, Richard L. Myers of Pittsburgh and James R. Myers of Greencastle; a sister, Ruth Dourte of Dillsburg; two brothers, Ralph L. Myers of Plymouth Meeting and Amos D. Myers of Winchester, Va.; nine grandchildren; and 15 greatgrandchildren.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his stepmother, Mary E. Myers, in 1991 and by a grandson, Gregory E. Myers, in 2005.

Services were held the morning of Wednesday, May 31, in the Macedonia United Brethren Church, Greencastle, with Rev. Gayle L. Ruble Sr. officiating.

Burial was in the adjoining church cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Building Fund of the Macedonia United Brethren Church, 11887 Worleytown Road, Greencastle, Pa. 17225 or to the Hospice of The Good Shepherd, 2700 Luther Dr., Chambersburg, Pa. 17201.

Arrangements were handled by Harold M. Zimmerman And Son Funeral Home, Greencastle.

Janette C. Saylor

Janette C. (Stevens) Saylor, 85, a resident of the Shook Home, Chambersburg, for the past three years and formerly of Linden Avenue, Greencastle, and a 25-year resident of 3767 Mercersburg Road, Mercersburg, died at 9:40 p.m. Saturday June 24, 2006 in the nursing home.

Born Sept. 6, 1920 in Claylick, she was the daughter of the late Emmert E. and Avis V. (Hoover) Stevens.

Mrs. Saylor was a homemaker and enjoyed attending Bible study and playing bingo at Shook Home.

She and her husband, Richard D. "Dick" Saylor were married April 5, 1947 in Hagerstown, Md. He died Jan. 8, 1995.

Mrs. Saylor enjoyed gardening and canning.

She is survived by three  daughters, Linda (wife of Robert) Sipes of Greencastle, Cinda (wife of Carl) Carty of Greencastle and Teresa (wife of Robert) Brown of Bluff City, Tenn.; a son, Richard R.( husband of Pamela) Saylor of St. Thomas; two sisters, Retha Daley of Mercersburg and Maude Beckwith of Greencastle; 11 grandchildren; and 14 greatgrandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a grandson, Timothy Saylor; a brother, Wilson Stevens; and a sister, Faye Bradley.

Services were held the morning of Wednesday, June 28 in the Harold M. Zimmerman and Son Funeral Home, Greencastle with Rev. Paul Baker officiating.

Burial was in the Fairview cemetery, Mercersburg.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be given to the Shook Home, 55 South Second St., Chambersburg, Pa. 17201 or to The Home Nursing Agency, 761 Fifth Ave., Suite A, Chambersburg, Pa. 17201.

George L. Miller

George L. Miller, 86, a resident of Falling Spring Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Chambersburg, since February and formerly of 9635 Long Lane, Greencastle, died at 10:40 p.m. Friday, May 26, 2006 in the nursing center.

Stephen S. Waugh

Stephen S. Waugh, 85, of 1400 Ridge Ave., Reading, and formerly of West Walter Ave. Greencastle, died at 4 p.m. Wednesday, May 24, 2006 in the Reading Hospital and Medical Center in Reading.

Diana K. (FitzGerald) Gehring

Diana K. "Di" (FitzGerald) Gehring, 40, of 3539 Brook Street, Greencastle, died at 12:13 p.m., Friday, May 26, 2006 in the emergency room of Waynesboro Hospital, Waynesboro. Her death was unexpected and attributed to natural causes.

Earl E. Minnich

Earl E. Minnich, 87, a resident of the Falling Spring Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Chambersburg, since May 2, 2006 and formerly of Providence Place, Chambersburg, and 15711 Clearview Ave., State Line, Pa. died at 2 a.m. Tuesday July 4, 2006 in the nursing home.
