Mary Viola Gwozdziewycz
Mary Viola Gwozdziewycz, 89 formerly of Honesdale died Monday, January 3, 2011 at Wayne Woodlands Manor where she resided. She was preceded in death by her husband Leo P. Gwozdziewycz on May 18, 1991. Born November 25, 1921 in Honesdale, she was the daughter of the late Hans and Nettie Carney Hansen. She was a member of St. John the Evangelist Parish in Honesdale and its Altar and Rosary Society. Mary will be remembered by all as a caring person and generous hostess. She spent her days enjoying cooking, gardening, sewing and taking loving care of her children and grandchildren. She loved to travel and toured many states and Canadian provinces during her lifetime with her friends and family members. Mary loved sharing good times with everyone; she was always ready to attend plays and concerts and loved to go country line dancing. Surviving are her sons George, Michael and wife Carolyn and Edward and wife Julie all of Honesdale; her daughter Janet DeGroat of Whites Crossing; her sisters Juanita Testa of Wallkill, NY and Alice Ellison of St. Petersburg, FL; 7 grandchildren and several great grandchildren and great great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her brothers Carl, Pete, John, Bob, Lee and Ray Hansen and her sister Jessie Gillespie. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday at St. Mary Magdalen Church at 10 AM. Interment will follow in St. John's Cemetery. Clyde Albert Stegner Sr.
Clyde Albert Stegner Sr., 85 of Honesdale died unexpectedly Monday, January 10, 2011 at Wayne Memorial Hospital. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, the former Augusta M. Hopkins. The couple married May 3, 1947. Born July 7, 1925 in Honesdale he is the last surviving member of the James G. and Elsie London Stegner family. Clyde was a welder for Erie Railroad and on May 20, 1964 he began working for Conrail and retired July 1, 1990. In 1942 he survived the flood in Honesdale. While stuck in a tree during the flood he was able to reach down and rescue Ray Canfield from drowning. Clyde lived a full and happy life and was a motorcycle enthusiast and was a member of Baer's Drill Team. He enjoyed fishing, hunting and spending time with his grandchildren. Also surviving is his son Clyde A. Stegner Jr. and wife Tammy of Beach Lake; his daughter Bonnie Walsh of Honesdale; four grandchildren Sarah and Joey Walsh and Clyde A. III and Augusta May Stegner; nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his sisters Alice Wood and Dorothy Stegner; half brothers Jess, Harold, Lloyd, William and Walter Gibbs and half sisters Nettie Reigler, Ethel Bidwell, Mabel Nestico and Ellen Hiller. Funeral services will be held on Friday at 11AM at Hessling Funeral Home, 428 Main St. Honesdale with Rev. Bill Frisk officiating. Interment will follow in Indian Orchard Cemetery. Friends may visit on Thursday from 4 to 7 and Friday from 10 to service time.
Thomas Rex Erixon Jr.
Thomas Rex Erixon Jr., 88 of Tyler Hill, died Wednesday, January 12, 2011 at Hospice Community Care in Dunmore. He is survived by his second wife, Rosemarie Kingston. He was preceded in death by his first wife the former Betty L. Wedge, who died in 1990. Born May 15, 1922 in Upland, CA he was the son of the late Thomas Rex Sr. and Geneva Jackson Erixon. He was a US Army veteran who served during World War II. Rex served under General George S. Patton during The Battle of The Bulge. Later he attended Michigan Tech in Houghton, Michigan and received a degree in Engineering. After graduating he became an Aeronautical Engineer for General Electric Aero Space Center in Valley Forge, PA. After retiring he became a Real Estate Broker. Rex was an avid golfer who played many of the courses in the area. He enjoyed gardening and spending time with his family. Also surviving is his daughter Vicki Jones and husband Tim of Tyler Hill; step-sons Martin Kingston and wife Mary Ellen of Honesdale and Stephen Kingston and wife Geralyn of Townsend, DE; a step-daughter Judy Heller and husband Randy of Honesdale; a brother Clayton Erixon of Jacksonville, IL; a grandson Jeremy Jones; step grandchildren Miles, Jack, Amanda and Lorraine Kingston; nephews Stewart and Dennis Erixon. He was preceded in death by his son Ronald D. Erixon; a brother Paul Erixon; a sister Peggy Hogg; and step daughter Mary Ellen Kingston. As per his request, funeral services will be private at the convenience of the family with Rev. Jean Blackie of the Damascus Manor United Methodist Church officiating. Vincent G. Bates Sr.
Vincent G. Bates Sr., 71 of Dyberry Twp., died Thursday, January 13, 2011 at home surrounded by his family after a courageous and lengthy battle with cancer. He is survived by his wife the former Deanna Weinberger. The couple recently celebrated their 50th anniversary on October 15th. Born January 23, 1939 in Prompton, he was the son of the late Henry and Lila Harvey Bates. Vince was a carpenter for 35 years before working at Moore Business Forms where he retired after 15 years. An outdoorsman, he enjoyed hunting and fishing. He will be remembered as a hard worker and for the love that he had for his family. He was highly respected and will be greatly missed. Also surviving are his children Debby Mousley and husband Eugene, Lisa Liptak and husband Jim, Vincent G. Bates Jr., Rita Bass and husband Mike all of Honesdale and Paul Bates and wife Sue of Dunkirk, OH; grandchildren Jason Saylor, Noelle Day, Kyle Saylor, Amber and Brianna Bates, Joshua and Jasmine Bass; great grandchildren Julie, Emma and Zachary; his brothers Frank, Raymond, Clifford, Leland, Harvey, James and Jerry Bates; sisters Sally Mang and Marilyn Johnson; many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his son Allen Bates and a brother Donald Bates. As per his request, cremation was held at Maple Hill at Salem Crematory. The family will receive friends on Wednesday at Hessling Funeral Home, 428 Main St. Honesdale from 10 to 11. A private memorial service will be held for the family. Ann Elizabeth Hessling
Ann Elizabeth Hessling, 66, of Ocala Florida died Sunday, January 23, 2011 at Atlantic City Medical Center in Ponmona, NJ after a long battle with cancer. She is survived by her husband of 47 years, Thomas F. Hessling. The couple married on December 28th, 1963. She was born August 26, 1944 in Honesdale Pa., the daughter of the late Robert Southerton and Ruth Lindsay Southerton of Honesdale. Ann will be remembered as a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend. Surviving are her daughters Julie Hessling-Boldridge and husband Jeff of Tuckerton, NJ and Elizabeth Hessling-Corsaro and husband Frank of Galveston, TX. Grand children Rachael Benn and husband David, Jessica Boldridge and Melissa Boldridge. Great Grandchildren Emma Rose Benn and David Henry Benn and her loving dog Wilbur.
William R. Ryan
William R. Ryan, 67 of Honesdale and formerly of Massapequa, NY died Tuesday, January 25, 2011 at Wayne Memorial Hospital with his family by his side. He is survived by his wife of 46 years, the former Corine L. Haas. The couple married August 1, 1964. Born December 19, 1943 in Astoria, NY he was the son of the late William and Gertrude Corwin Ryan. William was an electrician in Long Island, N.Y. and was a member of the Local # 25 I.B.E.W. In 2007 he retired and moved to Honesdale where he and his family had a vacation home. An outdoorsman, he enjoyed hunting and fishing. A gun enthusiast, he belonged to a gun club while he lived in New York. He enjoyed doing things around the house such as carpentry and riding his New Holland tractor. He liked history and amazed many with his great knowledge of historical facts and events. Also surviving are his sons William Ryan of Selden, NY, Robert Ryan of St. George, UT and Shawn Ryan of Wantagh, NY; his daughters Susan Plunkett of Honesdale and Corine Armentano of North Salem, NY; sisters Marilyn O’Leary and Geraldine Nolan of Massapequa Park, NY; grandchildren Alexis, Ashley and Matthew Ryan, Michelle and Kim Plunkett, Nicholas, Anthony and Samantha Armentano; nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death his sister Barbara Ronacher. As per his request, cremation was held at Maple Hill at Salem Crematory. A memorial service will be held at the families convenience. Doris A. Driscoll
Doris A. Driscoll, 91, a resident at Ellen Memorial Health Care Center, died Friday, January 28, 2011 at Wayne Memorial Hospital. She was preceded in death by her husband Joseph L. Driscoll on November 10, 2000. The couple married June 21, 1957. Born September 6, 1919 in Brooklyn, NY she was the daughter and last surviving member of the Elmer and Sadie Gatto Tegethoff family. Doris began working at Brachs Candy in New York and later worked for Abraham and Strauss Department Store. She retired from Macy's Department Store in the King's Plaza Mall where she worked for over 15 years. She was very proud to participate every year in the Macy's Day Parade where she was one of the many who got to hold one of the balloons through the parade. An avid baseball fan, Doris was a season ticket holder for many years for the New York Mets and followed the New York Yankees. She enjoyed bowling and belonged to several leagues while in New York. Doris was of the Catholic faith. Surviving is her daughter Jo-Ellen P. Ross of Yorktown Heights, NY; her grandchildren John T. Ross of SC, Donna T. O'Shaughnessy of Honesdale and Kelly A. Schumacher of Lindenhurst, NY and seven great-grandchildren. A private graveside service will be held at Calverton National Cemetery in Calverton, NY. Walter Raymond Rapacki
Walter Raymond Rapacki, 91 of Honesdale, passed away, Friday, January 28, 2011 at Wayne Memorial Hospital. He is survived by his wife, the former Carol Loring. The couple married October 19, 1991. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Gertrude Rapacki in 1989. Born August 30, 1919 in Jersey City, NJ he was the son of the late Leon and Julia Nasarzewska Rapacki. He was a graduate of Newton-Ransom High School and also took classes at Rutgers University. Later he lived in Middlesex, NJ and worked as a machinist in the area. Walter loved to garden and travel. His passion was his pet parrots, which he adored. He spent hours singing and caring for them. He enjoyed telling stories of his days on the farm and his childhood. He was a lifetime member of BPOE Elks #1488 in Middlesex, NJ. He also spent many weekends and summers at his home in Promised Land. A caring man, Walter donated toys to local fire departments for needy children many years. After he moved to northeastern Pennsylvania, he would get up at 3 o'clock in the morning on Sundays to drive to Doylestown, PA where he would cook meals for visitors at Our Lady of Czestochowa Shrine. Also surviving is his daughter Carol Henryk and husband William; his brother Leo Rapacki and wife Rosemarie; sister Stella Konopka and husband Paul; step children Suzanne Turner, Thomas Turner, Shawn Turner and wife Kristen; 3 grandchildren, 1 great grandchild and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his brothers Edward, Adam, and Theodore and a sister Mary Cebula. As per his request, cremation will be held at Maple Hill at Salem Crematory. Helen E. Mill
Helen E. Mill, 89, of Berlin Township, passed away January 25,2011 at her home. She was preceded in death by her husband of 58 years,Roland E. Mill who died on October 1,2004. She was born August 28,1923 in Honesdale. She is the daughter of the late Albert and Eliza Beardsley. She and her husband owned and operated a dairy farm in Berlin Township until their retirement. Helen enjoyed sewing, gardening and hunting, and was also a wonderful cook. Survivors include a daughter Linda S. Perin of Wind Gap, Pa. A granddaughter Lisa, two great grandchildren, sisters Shirley Noble and Alberta Robbins both of Honesdale,and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by a grandson Thomas Perin, brothers Albert, Charles, Sidney, Russell and Larry Beardsley, also a sister Sylvia Beardsley. A blessing service will be Friday February 4,2011 at Hessling Funeral Home 428 Main Street, Honesdale, at 11:00am. Friends may visit prior from 10am to service time. Internment will be in Indian Orchard Cemetery.
Adam Joseph Patzuk
Adam Joseph Patzuk, 83 of Honesdale died peacefully Sunday, November 28, 2010 at home. Born February 2, 1927 in Philadelphia, he was the son of the late Adam and Mary Smitana Patzuk. He was a US Navy veteran of World War II and was a member of V.F.W. In his early years, he loved hunting and fishing with his grandson Jesse. Surviving is his former wife Mary Patzuk of Dupont, PA; his sons Adam Patzuk and wife Mary Ellen of CT, George Patzuk of OR and Gabriel Patzuk of Goshen, NY; his daughter Mary Steelman and husband Jim of Honesdale; grandchildren Cassidy and Ryder Patzuk of OR and Jesse J. Patzuk and wife Jessica and their children Jordan and Dylan all of Equinunk. He was preceded in death by his daughter Janice Patzuk. Funeral services will be held on Saturday at 11 AM at Hessling Funeral Home, 428 Main St. Honesdale. As per his request, there will be no visitation hours. Thomas A. Howell
Thomas A. Howell, 76 of Honesdale, died Wednesday, December 1, 2010 at home. He is survived by his wife of 46 years, the former Mary D. Kennedy. The couple married September 5, 1964. Born April 28, 1934 in Flushing, NY he was the son of the late Clarence and Margaret Murphy Howell. After graduating from high school, Tom joined the US Army. Later he graduated from St. John's University in New York and then attended Fordham University. A journalist, Tom began working as a reporter for the Jersey Journal. Later he was the editor for Radio Free Europe Magazine and then the editor for Facts on File Inc. After leaving journalism he became a teacher and taught in Flushing, NY. Before retiring Tom was a Elevator Operator and maintenance man at Kennelworth Apartments in NYC at Central Park West. He enjoyed that job, meeting many people some who were famous tenants. Tom was a member of St. John the Evangelist Parish in Honesdale and participated in its Perpetual Eucharistic Adoration Chapel. He was a member of the Northeast Barbershopers and was a member of the Wayne County Historical Society where he volunteered. In the past he also volunteered at the food pantry. A sports fan, he followed the Buffalo Bills, Boston Red Sox and the former Hartford Whalers and NY Giants baseball team. Also surviving is his son Michael and wife Angie of Bellerose Terrace, NY; his daughter Margaret Ozcan and husband Cuneyt (Ibo) of Bellmore, NY; brothers Gerard Howell of Parma, OH, his twin brother James Howell and wife Margaret of Ottowa, Canada; his brother in law William Kennedy of Greenville, SC; grandchildren Deniz and James (Jimmy) Ozcan; several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his son James Howell. Funeral Mass will be Saturday at 10 AM at St. Mary Magdalen Church in Honesdale. As per his request, cremation will follow. Edna Pearl (Robbins) Klimek
Edna Pearl (Robbins) Klimek, 87 formerly of Honesdale, died Wednesday, December 1, 2010 at Carbondale Nursing Home. She was preceded in death by her husband Joseph A. Klimek on May 30, 1988. The couple married May 15, 1947. Born September 23, 1923 in Honesdale, she was the daughter of the late David Samuel and Anna Marie (Mamie) Hergott Robbins. She attended high school in Honesdale and later was a seamstress at several garment factories in the area. She retired as a personal care provider. Edna was a member of St. John the Evangelist Parish in Honesdale. She was a caring, loving mother, grandmother and friend who will be greatly missed by all who knew her. Her greatest joys in life were her children and grandchildren along with a love of cooking, dancing, Bingo, crossword puzzles, reading and helping others. The family would like to thank Dr. Tamrat Bekele, the staff at the Carbondale Nursing Home and Compassionate Care Hospice. Surviving is her son David J. Klimek and wife Mary of Simpson, PA; her daughter Judith C. Cynthia K. Maciejewski
Cynthia K. Maciejewski, 48 of Honesdale died Friday, December 3, 2010 at the VNA Hospice Inpatient Unit at CMC in Scranton. She is survived by her soul-mate of 25 years Robert Schaeffer of Beach Lake. Born March 12, 1962 in Carbondale, she was the daughter of the late John and Stasia Washeleski Maciejewski. She was a graduate of St. Rose High School in Carbondale and later moved to Washington D.C. and was a secretary for the Office of the Director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation. After returning to Honesdale, she worked at Turano Nationwide Insurance as a secretary and before taking ill, she was a sales manager at Dedeco International Inc. in Long Eddy, NY. She attended St. Bernard's Roman Catholic Church in Beach Lake. Cynthia enjoyed the outdoors, gardening and taking care of her flowers. She and Bob enjoyed camping and going to music festivals with their friends. She collected gnomes for her yard and painted them for friends and neighbors. Also surviving are her brothers John Maciejewski and wife Anita and Joseph Maciejewski and wife Sandra all of Damascus, Kenneth Maciejewski and wife Marie of Clifford; a sister Anastasia Pascoe and husband Clem of Archbald; an aunt Adella Kuna of Carbondale; sister-in-law Yvonne Schaeffer of Milanville; nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Elsbeth Fehn
Elsbeth Fehn, 86 formerly of Terrace St. Honesdale, left to with her creator on Sunday, December 5, 2010. She was preceded in death by her husband George Fehn on November 30, 1967. She was born on June 18, 1924 in Bremerhaven, Germany, daughter of the late Eric and Elizabeth Vontrabant. Her Father fondly referred to her as "Elsa". She had two older siblings, a sister Waaltraut and a brother Horst, whom she adored. During the war in Europe, as a small child, she was seperated from her family whom she would never see alive again. She was raised by a neighbor and entered a career as a nurse. While working in a hospital in Hamburg, Germany she met her husband, an American, George Fehn. In 1964 she came to the United States with her husband and continued her nursing career at the Kings City Hospital in Brooklyn, NY. George died suddenly in 1967. With a group of her friends from Germany, she retired to Wayne County in 1988. Elsbeth was a member of St. John the Evangelist Parish in Honesdale and its Altar and Rosary Society and was a member of the Court St. Martin, Catholic daughters of America. She also was a supporter of mother Angelica and EWTN. Elsbeth was a refined lady who, after much contemplation and careful study, would weave people into her heart. Her faith was firm and well versed. She longed for the day to be with her family again. Surviving are her brother-in-laws and sister-in-laws, Jill Fehn, Bernie and Jerry Coughlan, and Pete and Carol Fehn; nieces and nephews Thomas P. Fehn Jr. and wife Donna E., Richard Fehn and wife Lisa, Steven Fehn and wife Donna M., Alex Vetere and wife Beth, Julie Schuchman, Colleen Wyman and husband Alan, Maureen Javis and husband John, Jerry Coughlan Jr., Peter Fehn III and wife Amy, Mike Brancato and wife Carol Ann, and Brian Coughlan; her godchild Freya Wieczorrek of Bremerhaven, Germany and her life long friend Martha Eins of Bremerhaven, Germany. She was preceded in death by her brother-in-law Thomas Fehn; her sister-in-law Dolores Vetere and her cherished dog Glory in 2002. Margaret Patricia Smith
Margaret Patricia Smith, 73 of Hawley, died Wednesday, December 15, 2010 at Wayne Memorial Hospital. She is survived by her husband of 53 years, William D. Smith Jr. The couple married June 1, 1957. Born August 9, 1937 in Whites Crossing, PA, she was the daughter of the late Frank and Elizabeth Martzen Novobilski. Margaret worked at Amber Lingerie where she was a seamstress and later worked at the IGA in Hawley in the Deli. She was an avid New York Yankee fan and loved taking care of her puppy Missy. She was a member of Queen of Peace Parish in Hawley. Margaret enjoyed spending time with her family and will be remembered as a devoted wife and mother. Also surviving is her son Dr. William D. Smith III of Pittsburgh; her brother Frank Novobiliski Jr. and wife Susie of Throop; her sisters Dorothy Plevyak and husband Bernie of Olyphant, Amy Plevyak and husband Chet of New Jersey, Catherine Schuman and husband Fred of Honesdale and Patricia Hill and husband Richard of Hawley; nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by an infant son and her brother Robert Novobilski. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday at 10 AM at Queen of Peace Church in Hawley. Patricia Marie Phillips
Patricia Marie Phillips, 73 of Madison Twp. died Tuesday, December 21, 2010 at St. Mary's Villa Nursing Home in Elmhurst. She is survived by her husband of 55 years Lewis Phillips. The couple married January 1, 1956. Born July 15, 1937 in Hamburg, NJ she was the daughter of the late Geneva Hendra Stanback and Victor Kenneth Phillips. Pat worked for 20 years as a social worked at the Sussex County Welfare Board. Before retiring she was a nurses aid at Harbors Edge in Delray Beach, FL. She enjoyed crocheting, spending time at the beach and taking motorcycle trips with her husband to visit friends. Patricia will be remembered as a loving mother, grandmother, great grandmother, sister and friend. The family would like to thank the staff of St. Mary's Villa Nursing Home for the exceptional care they provided Pat during her stay. Lauderdale, FL; her daughters Cindy Hamilton and husband George of Mineral Wells, TX, Vicky Wagner and husband Richard, Brenda Phillips of Boynton Beach, FL, Jacquelyn Dexheimer and husband Billy of Hamlin; her brothers Kenneth Phillips and wife Debbie of Powell, OH, James Phillips and wife Marguerite of Montague, NJ, Clark Phillips and wife Jean of Whitehall, OH; her sister Carol Turner and husband John of Franklin, NJ; her close friend Dorreth Richardson of Boynton Beach, FL; grandchildren Erica and Jessica Shay, Joshua and Matthew Mizerek, Jahnay and Justina Shay; great grandchildren Kenneth Patten and April Shay-Carney; nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by an infant son Douglas Phillips and a grandson Joshua Douglas Shay. A Memorial service will be held on Monday at 6:30 at Hessling Funeral Home, 428 Main St. Honesdale.
