Joseph Wendrick
Joseph Wendrick, 78 of Honesdale, died Sunday, May 30, 2010 at his home. He is survived by his wife of 43 years, the former Jeanette R. Potter. The couple married June 8, 1967. Born June 18, 1931 in Scranton, he was the son of the late Joseph and Stella Standarski Wendrick. Joe spent his entire life in Wayne County from his childhood on the family farm near White Mills where he attended White Mills School for ten years, graduated from Hawley High School in 1949, through the raising of his family. He was drafted into the US Army and served two years in France and Germany during the Korean Conflict. Joe worked for Hussco Shoe Factory and later managed the Great H Mart in Honesdale. He was an avid bowler for many years and he enjoyed hunting, golfing, playing hozzie, horse racing, collecting and refinishing furniture. Joe especially enjoyed spending time with his children and grandchildren. Joe will be sorely missed by his family and friends. Also surviving are his children Linda Wendrick of Waymart, Joseph Wendrick of Portland, ME and Denise Devoe of Susquehanna; step- daughters Kimilyn Smith of Waymart, Lisa Smith of State College and Stephanie Domingo of Hawaii; his sister Jean Gillette of Hawley; 18 grandchildren, 7 great grandchildren; nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his sisters Helen Edwards and Stella McGinnis; a brother Wallace Wendrick and a great granddaughter Kaliya Wendrick. As per his request, cremation was held at Maple Hill at Salem Crematory in Archbald. Private funeral services will be held at the family's convenience. The family will receive friends on Monday, June 7, 2010 at Hessling Funeral Home, 428 Main St. Honesdale 12 to 2. Memorial contributions can be made to the White Mills Fire Dept., 695 Texas Palmyra Hghwy., White Mills, PA 18473.

Mary Katherine Washeleski
Mary Katherine Washeleski, RN, 76 of Honesdale,died Saturday, June 5, 2010 at Wayne Memorial Hospital. She is survived by her husband Joseph Washeleski. Born July 21, 1933 in Vandling she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Mary Oberzan Pazel. Mary was a graduate of Vandling High School, class of 1951 and in 1954 graduated from Jefferson Hospital School of Nursing in Philadelphia. After many years of service as a registered nurse, Mary retired from Wayne Memorial Hospital in 1998. Mary was a member of St. John the Evangelist Parish in Honesdale, the Wayne Memorial Hospital Auxiliary and her love of reading led her to volunteer at the Wayne County Library. She also enjoyed going for walks and gardening. Also surviving are her children Patricia Washeleski of Plymouth Meeting, PA, Catherine Rosenkrans of York, PA and Thomas Washeleski of York, PA; her grandchildren Ethan, Alex and Seth Rosenkrans. As per her request cremation was held at Maple Hill at Salem Crematory. A Memorial Mass will be celebrated on Thursday, June 10, 2010 at St. Mary Magdalen Church in Honesdale at 10 AM. Interment will follow in St. Mary's Cemetery. Memorial contributions can be made to the Wayne County Library, 1406 Main St. Honesdale, PA 18431.

Robert William Kuester
Robert William Kuester, 66 of Beach Lake, died Saturday, June 5, 2010 at Moses Taylor Hospital in Scranton. Born December 4, 1943 in Jersey City, NJ he is the son of Blanche Michalek Kuester of Beach Lake and the late Karl Kuester. He was a graduate of Honesdale High School and later served in the PA National Guard. Bob was a baker, farmer and owned and operated Kuester's, Inc. over 35 years. He sponsored a softball, dart and pool leagues. Bob was a proud member of Triple A since 1962 and the Honesdale Order of Free and Accepted Masons since the 1970's. He was also a member of St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church in Honesdale. Surviving are his children Gloria B. Kuester and husband Francisco Abarca, Karl, Kayla Robert Jr. Kuester; a step-son Thomas J. Maransky; a brother Carl Kuester; granddaughters Jaelynn and Selina; a niece Gretchen Moore and nephew Stephen Kuester; his former wife and friend Donna Kuester. He was preceded in death by a brother Frederick Kuester. Funeral services will be held on Friday at St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church at 11 AM. Interment will follow in Indian Orchard Cemetery. Friends may visit Hessling Funeral Home, 428 Main St. Honesdale on Thursday from 4 to 7. A Masonic Service will be held at 6:30 at the funeral home.

Minnie E. Pier
Minnie E. Pier, 84, a resident of Brighten at Julia Ribaudo, Lake Ariel entered into Divine Rest on Wednesday, June 9, 2010. Born March 12, 1926 in Walton, NY she was the daughter of the late Charles and Nora Mullineaux Baker. Minnie is survived by her daughter Sharon N. Kittner of Honesdale; three sons David Hodges of Congers, NY, Wayne Baker of Meshopen, PA and Ronald Baker of Tomkins Cove, NY; six grandchildren James Havner of Clarksville, TN, David Hodges Jr. of Mahwah, NJ, Barbara McLaughlin of New Windsor, NY, Charles Baker of Port Jervis, NY, Ronald Baker Jr. of Fort Lee, NJ and Lisa Neve of Manasquan, NJ; eight great grandchildren Nicolas, Benjamin, Luke and Alexander Neve; Michael and Meghan McLaughin and Amari and Telaya Havner. As per her request, there will be no public visitation hours. Cremation was held at Maple Hill at Salem Crematory. A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, June 15, 2010 at 1 PM at Hessling Funeral Home, 428 Main St. Honesdale with Pastor Lane Jones officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to The Calkins Baptist Church Building Fund, 527 Calkins Rd., Milanville, PA 18443.

Robert A. McHugh
Robert A. McHugh, 73 of Honesdale died Thursday, June 10, 2010 at Hospice Community Care Center in Dunmore. Born January 28, 1937 in Taylor, PA he was the son of the late Bart and Elizabeth Gilotti McHugh. He was a graduate of Old Forge High School, class of 1954. Bob was a US Navy veteran who served four years during peacetime. Later he received his bachelors degree in education from Mansfield University. Bob was in education for twenty six years. For twenty three years he was employed at Wayne Highlands School District where he taught at Damascus and in Honesdale. While in Damascus he coached basketball and later he coached golf in Honesdale. Bob was a member of the Honesdale Golf Club and served many positions there. He was a former member of the Jaycees, a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles and the American Legion in Florida. An avid golfer, he had 16 hole-in-one's. He enjoyed music, playing his guitar and spending time with his grandchildren. Surviving are his sons Robert Jr., James and wife Rose all of Honesdale; John of Monroe, NY;  daughters Jill Miller and husband Al of Hawley; Jennifer McHugh of Chino, CA; brothers Larry McHugh and wife Susan of Old Forge; Joseph McHugh and wife Patricia of Moosic; sisters Lorraine Atapovich of Old Forge and Marlene Marmo of Lady Lakes, FL; a brother-in-law Stanford Carey of Old Forge; 7 grandchildren; nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his sister Carol Carey and brother-in-law "Brownie" Atapovich. Funeral services will be held at the Hawley United Methodist Church on Thursday at 11 AM with Rev. Paul H. Wasman
Paul H. Wasman, 87 of Honesdale, died Saturday, July 31, 2010 at Wayne Memorial Hospital. He was preceded in death by his wife the former Mildred Sobolak on July 30, 1991. The couple married in 1945. Born September 26, 1922 in Honesdale, he was the son and last surviving member of the Leo and Bertha Tuch Wasman family. He was a US Army veteran of World War II serving as a tank commander in Germany. When he was Honorably discharged in 1946 he achieved the rank of Corporal and received two bronze stars. Paul retired after 25 years from Farview State Hospital where he was a guard. He was a member of St. John the Evangelist Parish in Honesdale. He enjoyed fishing and hunting and was a member of the Cherry Ridge Fishing Club. He also enjoyed gardening. Surviving is his daughter Marianne Wasman of Honesdale; his brother-in-law Fred Sobolak of Milanville; his sister-in-law Agnes Wilcox of Milanville; nieces, nephews and many great friends. He was preceded in death by his daughter Sandra L. Thorpe; brothers Donald, Bruce, Clarence and Robert Wasman and his sister Mildred McCormick. As per his request, cremation was held at Maple Hill at Salem Crematory. A graveside service will be held at a later date in St. Mary's Cemetery. Warren Gerard Lunney
Warren Gerard Lunney, 59 of Honesdale and formerly of Jersey City, NJ died Thursday, July 29, 2010. He is survived by his wife of 21 years, the former Merris Pullis. The couple married June 26, 1989. Born October 10, 1950 in Jersey City, NJ he was the son of the late Marion McCarthy. Warren was a former Police Officer in Hoboken, NJ and was proud to be the former Drum Major of the Bayonne Bridgemen Drum and Bugle Corp. He loved animals, especially his dogs Sam, Vern, Verna and Bear. Also surviving is his brother Bryan Atkinson and wife Helene of Oakland, NJ; sisters Mary Rhodey of Orlando, FL and Jerilyn Atkinson of Tinton Falls, NJ; his uncle Gerard McCarthy of North Bergen, NJ; a nephew Jason Atkinson; nieces Courtney and Amanda Rhodey and Kelly Atkinson. Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Tuesday at St. Mary Magdalen Church in Honesdale at 10 AM. Cremation will follow. James P. Mullen
James P. Mullen, 82 of Honesdale, passed away on Saturday, July 17, 2010 at Wayne Memorial Hospital. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, the former Lois Bishop. The couple married April 19, 1952. Born January 7, 1928 in Honesdale, he was the son of the late Clarence and Anna Hoffman Mullen. He attended St. Mary Magdalen Catholic School. Later he served in the United States Navy and served in the Pacific Theatre in Saipan during World War II. When he received his honorable discharge, he achieved the rank of Machinist Mate, Third Class. He worked at Chroma Tube and Mullen brothers Body Shop. He enjoyed fishing, classic cars and most of all his family. He was a member of St. John the Evangelist Parish, NRA, W.P. Chrysler Club and The National De Sota Club. Also surviving are his two sons James A. Mullen and wife Anne and William Mullen and wife Patsy all of Honesdale; grandchildren Christina, Brian and wife Renee, Shawn and Samantha Mullen; two great grandchildren Colin and Brook Mullen; sister-in-laws, nieces, nephews and cousins. As per his request, cremation was held at Maple Hill at Salem Crematory and a private graveside service was held at St. Mary's Cemetery. Memorial contributions can be made to the charity of the donor's choice.

Mildred A. Seidel McCormick
Mildred A. Seidel McCormick, 91 of Honesdale died Saturday, July 24, 2010 at Wayne Woodlands Manor in Waymart. She was preceded in death by her first husband Frederick J. Seidel in 1953 and second husband James W. McCormick in 2005. Born February 16, 1919 in Honesdale, she was the daughter of the late Leo and Bertha Tuch Wasman. A housewife and mother, Mildred worked with her husband as a secretary at Nationwide Insurance. She was a member of St. John the Evangelist Parish in Honesdale, its Altar and Rosary Society, Catholic  daughters of the Americas, Court St. Martin and a member of the Perpetual Eucharistic Adoration . Millie was also a proud member of the Red Hat Society and was a very active member of the Wayne Memorial Hospital Auxiliary where she volunteered at the Other Shop. She enjoyed antiquing and once active in sports, she enjoyed bowling and fishing. Surviving is her son James Seidel and wife Margaret, RN of Clarks Summit; her brother Paul Wasman of Honesdale; grandchildren Karen Rodgers and husband Jim and Jeffrey Seidel and wife Lynn; great grandchildren Emilie, Ashley, Madison and Zachery Rodgers and Nathan and Haley Seidel; nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her brothers Donald, Bruce, Clarence and Robert Wasman. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday at 10 AM at St. Mary Magdalen Church in Honesdale. Pauline M, ( Mannick ) Derrick
Pauline M, ( Mannick ) Derrick, age 95, Honesdale died Saturday July 17th at the Wayne Memorial hospital following an illness. Born April 1st 1915 at the family home in Vandling PA. She was the daughter of the late George and Elizabeth Claire Dunleavy Mannick. She was a graduate of Vandling High School and later retired after twenty years as a label printer for the Katz Underwear company, Honesdale. She was an active member of the Central United Methodist Church, Honesdale and its Women's Society. In the 1930's she was a referee for woman's basketball and was an avid sports fan especially the NEW YORK YANKEES. Pauline enjoyed family, friends, grandchildren and great grandchildren. Surviving are one son, Gerald Derrick and wife Barbara of Scranton; two  daughters, Ruth Ann Mitchell and husband Donald of Vestal NY and Kathleen Feik and husband Vincent with whom she resided in Honesdale. One sister Arline Kleinbrauer of North Carolina. Also surviving are seven grandchildren Sondra Osborn, Paul Derrick, Jeffrey, David and James Mitchell, Thomas Feik and Julie Becker; ten great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a sister Emma Barrett. Funeral services will be in the Wesley Room of the Central United Methodist Church, Honesdale on Thursday July 21, 2010 at 1 PM by Rev. Rob Kaniski, Pastor. Interment Canaan Corners Cemetery, Waymart. Friends may visit on Wednesday from 4 until 7 in the Wesley Room. Thomas Robert Atkinson
On June 24th, 2010 Thomas Robert Atkinson died of injuries suffered in an accident. Better known as Tom, Tommy, or "ACK" he was well known in the area for his expertise in tree trimming and removals, his long time vocation. His greatest loves were his mother and his son and daughter, as well as his two grand  daughters and his beloved family. His second love was his avid motorcycling which was only rivaled by his tree work knowledge. He was born on February 19th, 1960 at the Margaret Hague Medical Center in Jersey City, NJ to his proud parent, Margaret and Thomas Atkinson. His maternal grandparents were David and Mary Heath of Bayonne, NJ and paternal grandparents, J. Ralph and Helen Tarkett Atkinson, Honesdale. He is survived by his mother and  Father, Thomas Atkinson, Sr. and Margaret Heath Atkinson and also by his children James L. Atkinson and wife Taren, and his daughter Allyson Marie Atkinson. In addition, his two beloved granddaughters, Natalie Elizabeth and Maggie Ann Atkinson, his sister and her husband, Amy and Carl Beckers, as well as many Uncles, Aunts and cousins. He will long be remembered and missed by his many friends and his passing leaves a big void within his family. Anna Mae Arnoldini
Anna Mae Arnoldini, 92 of Honesdale and formerly of Waymart, died Tuesday, June 15, 2010 at Ellen Memorial Health Care Center following a lengthy illness. She is survived by her husband of 54 years, Francis J. "Mike" Arnoldini. The couple married June 2, 1956. Born May 24, 1918 in Scranton, she was the daughter of the late Edward and Margaret Boylan Costello. She was a graduate of Holy Rosary High School in Scranton. During World War II she worked at Piezo Crystal Co. in Scranton where they made crystals for communication equipment for the military. Before marrying and becoming a housewife and mother, she was employed at Scranton Lace Co. where she was a sewing machine operator. Anna was a member of St. Mary's Church in Waymart and a past member of its Altar and Rosary Society. She and her husband enjoyed playing cards and taking bus trips. Also surviving is her son Jerome F. Arnoldini and wife Ellen of Honesdale; nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her brother Edward P. Costello. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday at St. Mary's Church in Waymart at 10 AM. Interment will follow in Canaan Corners Cemetery. David McElroy
David McElroy, 91 of Honesdale, died Sunday, June 13, 2010 at Wayne Woodlands Manor in Waymart. He was preceded in death by his wife, the former Marion Ann Olcefski who died April 26, 2006. Born December 4, 1918 in Peckville, PA he was the son and last surviving member of the Robert and Emma McElroy family. He was a US Navy veteran who served in World War II and the Korean Conflict. Before retiring he worked for Agway in Honesdale where he was a serviceman and delivery person. David was a member of St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church and a life member of Texas #4 Fire Co.. He was also a member and Exalted Ruler of the former Elks Lodge and an avid Saturday night card player. Surviving are his sons David Richard and wife Marilynn, William Francis and wife Linda and Lynn Allen and wife Diane all of Honesdale; eight grandchildren and nine great grandchildren; nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his sisters Emilie, Dorothy and Ruth; brothers Art, George, Willard and Bob. As per his request, cremation was held at Maple Hill at Salem Crematory. Private funeral services will be held at the families convenience. Memorial contributions can be made to St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church, 107 7th St. Honesdale, PA 18431.

Doris M. Bates
Doris M. Bates, 80 of Honesdale, died Sunday, June 13, 2010 at Ellen Memorial Health Care Center. She is survived by her husband of 59 years, Arnold S. Bates. The couple married September 9, 1950. Born February 11, 1930 in Beach Lake, she was the daughter and last surviving member of the Charles and Margaret Billard Bayly family. After graduating high school, she attended Wayne Commercial School. She was a dedicated employee of the Wayne Bank for over twenty years where she was the head teller. Besides raising her family, Doris was a very active member of St. John the Evangelist Parish and its Altar and Rosary Society. She was the driving force in instituting the Perpetual Eucharistic Adoration Chapel in St. Mary's and became a leader in being sure that all the hours were filled. Doris was also very active in the Parish Block Party over the years. She loved to travel, read and celebrate life. Also surviving are her sons Daniel Bates of White Mills, Terry Bates of Bethlehem and James Bates and wife Jennifer of Kunckletown, PA;  daughters Nancy Lavenduski and husband Joseph of Honesdale, Bonnie Wilson and husband Tom of Macon, GA and Anne Miller of Honesdale; 14 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren; nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by an infant grandson Daniel Bates; son-in-law Randy Miller; brothers Charles, Kenneth and George Bayly and a sister Ruth Mardell. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, June 18, 2010 at 10 AM at St. Mary Magdalen Church. Interment will follow in St. Mary's Cemetery. Gladys Gertrude Brink
Gladys Gertrude Brink, 88 of Honesdale died Monday, September 6, 2010 at her home. She is preceded in death by her husband Benjamin P. Brink who died March 7, 1969. The couple married June 17, 1938. Born March 20, 1922 in Uswick, PA she was the daughter of the late Alexander and Anna Edwards Williams. Gladys worked for many years in garment factories in the area where she did knitting. She was a member of V.F.W. in Honesdale. Gladys was very proud to have five generations of family members. She was a regular at Bingo every Tuesday night at Texas #4 before taking ill. Surviving are her children Delvennia Smith, Benjamin Brink, Gladys Kenyon, Patricia Schillinger and husband George, Franklin Brink, Beth Ann Carney and husband James, Robert Brink and wife Patricia and Randy Brink and wife Laura all of the Honesdale area; sisters Stella Miller of Hawley and Idella Rollison of Honesdale; 36 grandchildren, 62 great grandchildren and 11 great great grandchildren; many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by his sons Gary Brink in 1980, brothers Walter, George and Ernest Williams, sisters Cecilia Knapp and Mary Gibbs and her great granddaughter Carly Marie Williams. Funeral services will be held on Thursday at Hessling Funeral Home, 428 Main St. Honesdale at 11 AM with Rev. Rob Kazinski, Pastor of Central United Methodist Church officiating. Maureen M. "Reen" Stephens
Maureen M. "Reen" Stephens, 50 of Honesdale died Sunday, August 29, 2010 at the home of her brother and caregiver Tim Moffitt. Born October 14, 1959 in Honesdale, she was the daughter of the late Edward and Frances Ann Kiegler Moffitt. Reen attended Honesdale Catholic School until sixth grade and graduated from Honesdale High School, class of 1977. In high school she participated in basketball, softball, volleyball and was the drum major in the marching band. Later she received her CDL license from Trans American Tech in Fleetville and also graduated form Empire Beauty School. An active person, Reen coached Missy Softball, played in the Wayne County Womens Softball League, bowled in the Fairlane Lassies League and recently joined the Seelyville Fire Co. Ladies Auxiliary. Reen retired from the US Postal Service in Jermyn. Prior to that, she worked for Moore Business Forms, Katz Factory, Fairway Inn where she was a waitress and Trans American Tech where she was a CDL instructor. She was a member of St. John the Evangelist Parish in Honesdale and a former member of St. Martin of Tours in Jackson. Surviving are her sons Kristopher Hiller and wife Breanne of Hudson, NH and John E. Stephens at home; her  daughters Jessica Roberts and husband Jeff of Waymart and Michaela Stephens at home; her brothers Michael Moffitt of Charlotte, NC and Timothy Moffitt and wife Sue of Honesdale; her sister Patricia McClosky of Hawley; her granddaughter Kara Marie Hiller. She was preceded in death by a sister-in-law Margaret Sporer. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday at St. Mary Magdalen Church in Honesdale at 10 AM. Mary Jane Monaghan
Mary Jane Monaghan, RN, 86 of Hawley, died Sunday, August 29, 2010 at Wayne Memorial Hospital. She was preceded in death by her husband Robert H. Monaghan on August 24, 1999. The couple married September 21, 1945. Born November 23, 1923 in Blakely, PA she was the daughter of the late Joseph Earl and Rose Quinn Murphy. She was a graduate of Blakely High School and later graduated from Mercy Nursing School. A nurse for over 45 years, she began as a private duty nurse and later worked at Wayne Memorial Hospital for over 30 years before retiring. Jane was a member of BVM Queen of Peace Parish in Hawley. She is survived by her sons Robert J. Monaghan and wife Linda of Portland, OR and Daniel Monaghan of Reading, PA; her daughter Patricia Reinert and husband Walter of Glendale, AZ; daughter in law Ann Monaghan of Hawley; 8 grandchildren, 4 great grandchildren, nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her twin sons Richard B. and James K. Monaghan, her granddaughter Tarah Reinert, great grandson Nicholas Jordan and a sister Geraldine Dando. As per her request, cremation will be held at Maple Hill at Salem Crematory. The family will receive friends at Hessling Funeral Home, 428 Main St. Honesdale on Wednesday from 4 to 6. Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Thursday at Queen of Peace Church in Hawley at 10 AM. Interment will follow in Queen of Peace Cemetery. Memorial contributions can be made to the Dr. Harry Propst Memorial Fund, 601 Park St. Honesdale, PA 18431.
