Richard L. Wilmarth
Police Chief Richard L. Wilmarth died Saturday, April 3, 2010 while at home. His beloved wife Doris (Dori) Wilmarth died March 17, 2002. Richard died while serving as Chief of Police for Lehigh Township, Wayne County. He had led the police department for nearly twenty years. Prior to serving as police chief he was a patrol officer for several years serving both Lehigh Township and Hawley Borough. Prior to that Richard had retired from the Wayne County Sheriff's Office where he held the rank of Assistant Chief Deputy Sheriff. He also served as Administrator for the Wayne County Prison when it was run and controlled by the Wayne County Sheriff's Office. He was a Marine Corps veteran of World War II, having served in the Pacific Theatre of operations. Richard was a man with a true gift. Having never lost that rugged Gunnery Sergeant attitude he ruled with great authority and he was Marine through and through. However he had a soft gentle side that only a select few would ever be privileged to see. He loved his officers and treated them as his own children. Having never had children of their own Richard and Doris would sit by the phone every night until they knew that "their boys" were home safely from patrol. Richard was active for many years with harness racing. He was well known throughout the tri state area for his knowledge and experience with horses and harness racing. Richard had owned many race horses when he was active in that business. A true animal lover he and Doris would patrol the paddock looking for jockeys, handlers, and owners that were treating their horses harshly. When he found them they would experience a wrath with such furry no one would dare ever to mistreat a horse again. Richard was a man of short stature with a huge heart encased in solid steel. Once a person breached his wall of defense they lived with the greatest friend a person could ever ask for. Richard loved his beloved Dori in a way that is seldom if ever seen. His soul died March 17, 2002 when he lost the only true love of his life. He mourned her every day, never failing to visit her grave daily until his recent illness. He wept for her openly and was unashamed of it. He has finally been reunited with his beloved Dori where they shall walk hand in hand, never again leaving her side. There are no surviving blood relatives. However, he leaves behind the men of his department who love him dearly and will miss him greatly. They will take the knowledge and experience that they had gained from Richard with them, using it as their guide as they continue on their way throughout their law enforcement careers. Also surviving are his closest friends, Betty Wood of Equinunk and Kevin Froese of Gouldsboro his personal providers and caregivers. There will be no calling hours. It was Richards wish for direct cremation. A graveside service will be held on Friday with full military honors at 11 AM at St. Johns Lutheran Cemetery. All friends are invited to attend.
