Lester Frederick Feldner

Lester Frederick Feldner, Jr., 82 of Honesdale, died July 23, 2008 at Ellen Memorial Health Care Center.

Born May 2, 1926 in Jersey City, NJ he was the son of the late Lester F. Feldner Sr. and Marie Collette Feldner. He was a proud US Marine Corps. veteran and served in the Pacific Theater during WWII. Later he worked as a machinist in a packing company in Newark, NJ until retiring. Les was gifted with a great voice and singing was his first love. Lester was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Jamesburg, NJ and a member of the Masonic Lodge in NJ.

Surviving are his sons Lester Feldner III of Honesdale and Ronald Feldner of Florida; brothers Roger and Raymond Feldner of NJ; a sister Janet Bilderbach of NJ; grandchildren Jessica, Matthew and Karlee; nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his sisters Madaline and Bernice and a brother Arthur.

As per his request, cremation was held at Maple Hill Crematory in Archbald.

A graveside service will be Friday, July 25, 2008 at 11 AM at Indian Orchard Cemetery.

Hildagarde Hoeckel

Hildagarde Hoeckel, 84 a resident at Wayne Woodlands Manor died Thursday, July 17, 2008.

She was preceded in death by her husband Otto Hoeckel in 1991. Born July7, 1924 in West Orange, NJ, she was the daughter of the late Montgomery and Caroline Lissinger Maynard. An artist, Hilda made a living drawing advertisements. She and her husband moved from New Jersey to Lakeville after retiring where she resided for the past 40 years. The family would like to thank the Pennsylvania Agency for the Aging, Meals on Wheels and Wayne Woodlands Manor for their excellent care of Hilda.

She is survived by her nieces Charolette Maynard of Maryland and Carol Brown of California. She was preceded in death by her brothers Floyd and Wolberton Maynard and a niece Kathy Reins.

A graveside service will be Monday at 10:30 at Canaan Corners Cemetery in Waymart.

Arrangements by Hessling Funeral Home, 428 Main St. Honesdale, PA.

Anna Vitzakovitch

Anna Vitzakovitch, 89 of Honesdale, died Tuesday, July 15, 2008 at her home.

Born February 9, 1919 in Carbondale, she was the daughter of the late William and Frances Balanovicz Vitzakovitch. She was a member of St. John the Evangelist Parish in Honesdale.

She is survived by her sister in law Marie Vitzakovitch of Clarks Summit; nieces and nephews Marieanne Harris of the Hideout, Jane Preate of Clarks Summit, Stan Vitzakovitch of Forest City, Beatrice Woods of California, John, Joseph and Betty Vocheovicz. She was preceded in death by by her twin sister Marion and sister Frances and brothers Leo, Stanley and John and a nephew Bill Vitzakovitch.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday, July 23, 2008 at St. Mary Magdalen Church in Honesdale at 10 AM.

Interment will follow in St. Mary's Cemetery.

Friends may visit the Hessling Funeral Home, 428 Main St. Honesdale on Wednesday from 9 to 9:30.

Mary C. Doherty

Mary C. Doherty died July 13, 2008 at Compassion Care Center located at St. Francis Hospital, Trenton, New Jersey.

She was born May 27, 1914 at the Doherty residence at Rose Lake, Rileyville, Pennsylvania. She was the first daughter of John J. Doherty and Alice Fives Doherty. Mary was a graduate with honors from Honesdale Catholic High School, class of 1932. She was a graduate of Hunter College, New York City. She was employed on Wall Street as the Executive Assistant to the Company President.

Mary moved to Washington D.C. in 1977 when the firm relocated there and moved to Bethesda, Maryland upon her retirement. Mary traveled extensively to Europe, Ireland, Mexico, Canada and the United States. Her slides and pictures were much enjoyed by the family. Mary loved to play golf in her free time. At the time of her death, Mary was the matriarch of the Doherty family. She was predeceased by her parents, two brothers James J. Doherty of Rileyville, PA and Columbus, OH and Robert Doherty of Berwick, PA; a sister Ann Doherty Murphy of Tonawanda, NY.

She is survived by three sisters Helen Swinton of Port Richmond, CA, Monica Vavricka of Bordentown, NJ and Kathryn Lowe of Richfield, OH; along with many nieces and nephews.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday July 18, 2008 at 11 AM at St. Joseph's Church in Rileyville. The celebrant will be  Father Martin Boylan, Pastor of St. John the Evangelist Parish in Honesdale.

There will be no calling hours.

Dorothy (Jeftuch) Ryan

Dorothy (Jeftuch) Ryan, 83 of Ellen Memorial Health Care Center and formerly of Seelyville died Saturday, July 12, 2008 at Wayne Memorial Hospital.

She was preceded in death by her husband John F. Ryan who died May 23, 1987. Born Sept. 19, 1924 in Carbondale, she was the daughter of the late John and Marion Jeftuch. A housewife and loving mother, Dorothy enjoyed watching baseball and playing Bingo. At Ellen Memorial, Dottie was well known amongst the residents and was always known to have a cup a coffee. She was a member of St. John the Evangelist Parish in Honesdale.

Surviving is her daughter Mariann Marshall and husband Wayne of Brooklyn, NY; her son John Ryan of Brooklyn, NY; a sister Louise Terlecki of Long Island; 3 grandchildren Ricky, Kristen, and John; 3 great grandchildren; nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her  daughters Christine and Lorraine Ryan and a granddaughter Jennifer Shoemaker.

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Wednesday, July 16, 2008 at St. Mary Magdalen Church in Honesdale at 10 AM.

Interment will follow in St. Mary's Cemetery.

Friends may visit the Hessling Funeral Home, 428 Main St. Honesdale Tuesday from 2-4 and 7-9.

James Kevin Monaghan

James Kevin Monaghan, 56, of Hawley, died Friday, July 11, 2008 at his home after illness.

He is survived by his wife of 16 years, the former Ann Kaltschitz. The couple married August 3, 1991. Born June 6, 1952 in Honesdale, he is the son of Jane Murphy Monaghan, RN of Hawley and the late Robert H. Monaghan. He was a graduate of Wallenpaupack Area High School, class of 1971. After graduating high school, he joined the US Army and was a veteran of the Vietnam War. Jim worked as a roofer and mason. He was a member of Wilson-Kelch American Legion, Post 311 Hawley and BVM Queen of Peace Parish in Hawley. The passions of his life were his wife and daughter and providing a willing and helping nature for anyone who needed it and a smile for all those who knew him. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.

Also surviving is his daughter Samantha Jane Monaghan at home; a sister Patricia Reinert and husband Walter of Glendale, AZ; brothers Robert J. Monaghan and wife Linda of Portland, OR and Daniel Monaghan and wife Donna of Reading, PA; his mother-in-law Marie Kaltschitz of Hawley; brother-in-law William Kaltschitz of NY; nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his twin brother Richard B. Monaghan and his beloved niece Tarah Reinert.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Thursday, July 17, 2008 at Queen of Peace Church in Hawley at 10 AM. Interment will follow in Green Gates Cemetery.

Sylvia H. Parker

Sylvia H. Parker,73 of Honesdale, died unexpectedly July 9, 2008 at Community Medical Center in Scranton after injuries recieved in an automobile accident.

Her sister and best friend Dolores Parker died in the same accident. Born August 2, 1934 in New York City, she was the daughter of the late Harry and Josephine Parker. She worked for many years at AT&T as a supervisor. An active person Sylvia and her sister enjoyed attending the Senior Citizen Center in Honesdale and the Beach Lake Seniors Club. An animal lover, she was active in Animal Rescue, the Lackawanna Kennel Club and raised show dogs with her sister. Sylvia enjoyed crocheting, knitting, playing cards and jigsaw puzzles. She was a member of St. John the Evangelist Parish in Honesdale. Sylvia and her sister Dolores were in separable and loved to be with family and friends.

Surviving are her nephews Stephen Pugliese and wife Laura of Honesdale, Michael Pugliese and wife Christina of Kingston; a niece Leeanne Pugliese of Carbondale; and 8 great nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her nephew George Pugliese who was a member of the US Army Reserve and died in Iraq in 2005.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday at St. John the Evangelist Church in Honesdale at 10 AM.

Interment will follow in St. Thomas Aquinas Cemetery in Archabald.

Friends may visit the Hessling Funeral Home, 428 Main St. Honesdale on Sunday from 2-5.

Dolores E. Parker

Dolores E. Parker, 76 of Honesdale died unexpectedly July 9, 2008 in Wyoming County from injuries in an automobile accident.

Her sister and best friend Sylvia Parker died in the same accident. Born July 14, 1931 in New York City, she was the daughter of the late Harry and Josephine Parker. Dolores and her sister where active in the Senior Citizen Center in Honesdale and the Beach Lake Seniors Club. An animal lover, she was active in Animal Rescue, the Lackawanna Kennel Club, and raised show dogs with her sister. Dolores enjoyed crocheting and knitting and one of her projects was to make afghans for veterans in the area.

She has made 180 afghans for veterans who proudly served our country. She was a member of St. John the Evangelist Parish in Honesdale. Dolores loved her sister and spending time with her and her family. She is survived by her sons Stephen Pugliese and wife Laura of Honesdale and Michael Pugliese and wife Christina of Kingston, NY; daughter in law Leeanne Pugliese of Carbondale; grandchildren Danielle, Richard, Anthony, Robert, Joseph, Nicholas, Jonathon and Avianna. She was preceded in death by her son George Pugliese who was a member of the US Army Reserve and died in Iraq in 2005.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday at St. John the Evangelist Church in Honesdale at 10 AM.

George Martin

George Martin, Jr., a lifelong resident of Honesdale, died Tuesday, July 8, 2008 at his home in Berlin Township.

He was preceded in death by his wife, the former Catherine J. Doherty who died May 8, 1985.

He is survived by his longtime companion and friend, Carrie VanOrden. Born January 29, 1931 in Honesdale, he was the son of the late George W. Sr. and Mary T. Polt Martin. He was a US Army Veteran who served during the Korean Conflict. After completing his service in the military, he spent his career as a technician for the United States Soil Conservation Department. Mr. Martin was a founding member of the Upper Hills Rod and Gun Club in Equinunk and a founding member of the Lake and Brook Club in Honesdale. He was also a Board Member and Vice President of the Wayne County Agricultural Society. Mr. Martin devoted countless hours toward his vision of the Wayne County Fair as a place where families could learn about agriculture and enjoy the "country fair" experience.

Also surviving are his sons George E. Martin and wife Theresa, Attorney John J. Martin and his wife Attorney Kimberly D. Martin and Christopher R. Martin all of Honesdale; a daughter Mary Kay VanPatten and her husband Brian of Milford; 12 grandchildren; nieces and nephews.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday, July 10, 2008 at St. John the Evangelist Church in Honesdale at 10 AM.

Interment will follow in St. John's Cemetery. A private viewing was held at the families convenience.

Elfriede S. Dietz

Elfriede S. Dietz, 73 of Beach Lake died Monday July 7, 2008 at her home after an illness.

She is survived by her husband of 51 years, Erwin E. Dietz. The couple married August 18, 1956. Born, December 23, 1934 in Hausen-Rhoen, Germany she was the daughter of the late Otto and Beate Trabert Link. A homemaker, Elfriede also worked as a seamstress in different companies. She enjoyed the outdoors and skiing with her husband. She was a member of the Lake Wallenpaupack German American Club and of St. Bernard's Roman Catholic Church in Beach Lake.

Also surviving is her son Edward and wife Mary of Queens, NY; brothers Hilmar Link and wife Edith of Queens, Werner and wife Gerda and Bernd and wife Ursula all of Germany; grandchildren Michael and Allison; and caretaker Anne Doherty

. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday July 10, 2008 at St. Bernard's R. C. Church in Beach Lake at 11 AM.

Interment will be Friday at St. John's Cemetery in Middle Village, NY. Arrangements by Hessling Funeral Home, 428 Main St. Honesdale.

Robert Walter Schiessler

Robert Walter Schiessler, 89 of Fort Lee, NJ and formerly of Honesdale passed away Monday, June 23, 2008 in Englewood, NJ.

Beloved husband of Florence (Cutler) Schiessler of Fort Lee, NJ. He was predeceased by his earlier wife, Betty Hartman. Born October 2, 1918 in Honesdale, he was the son of the late Walter and Josephine Herzog Schiessler.

Schiessler, an organic chemist, contributed many new learnings in the scientific community, particularly in the area of combustion, lubricants, and petrochemicals. He was responsible for discovering and patenting a new method to create RDX, a super explosive used on a great scale by the Canadian and US Governments during World War II. After receiving his Ph.D. in Physical Chemistry at Penn State University in 1944, he taught Chemistry and oversaw research at Penn State until 1955, when he was employed by Mobil Oil Corporation. At Mobil, he led the Company's research organization during which time he was responsible for discoveries of improving the efficiency of petroleum refining and exploration, reducing automobile emissions, and discovering a synthetic lubricant later marketed as Mobil 1. In 1968, Schiessler led Mobil Long-Range Planning, which predicted global changes in supply and demand of energy needs through 2020. In 1972, he led Mobil Land Development Corporation which oversaw real estate development of properties globally.

Also surviving is his daughter Lynn Francis of San Antonio, TX, 4 grandchildren; 3 great grandchildren and nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his daughter Dale Ann Schiessler.

A Memorial Service will be held at Hessling Funeral Home, 428 Main St. Honesdale on Friday, July 18, 2008 at 2 PM. Interment will follow in Glen Dyberry Cemetery.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 1 to service time.

In lieu of flowers, a donation can be made for Chemistry Scholarships to Penn State University, 430 Thomas Building, University Park, PA 16802, Attention: Robert Mothersbaugh.

Robert Howard Rollison

Robert Howard Rollison, Prompton Mayor, age 64, died Sunday, June 29, 2008 at the University Maryland Medical Center in Baltimore, MD following a lung transplant.

He is survived by his wife, Judith Ann Murphy. Born May 22, 1944 in Newark, NJ he was the son of the late Howard G. and Florence Williams Rollison.

He was a 1962 graduate of Governor Livingston Regional High School in Berkley Heights, NJ and a graduate of Transylvania University, Lexington, KY, class of 1966. Bob was employed at MRI - Prompton Tool where he was the Senior Buyer. He has been the proud Mayor of Prompton for the past 11 years. Bob was a life member of the National Rifle Association and Trout Unlimited. A true outdoorsman, Bob enjoyed hunting and tying his own flies for fishing.

Also surviving is his son Raymond of Tuscon, AZ; brothers Martin and wife Susan of Honesdale and William and wife Diane of Prompton; a sister Susan Smart and husband Charles of Highland Park, NJ; grandchildren Jeremy in Iraq, Alyssa, Tyler, Leah, and Kelby; great grandson Darrius at home; nephews Christopher, Eric, Philip, Alex and Zachary; a step son Richard Murphy of Landsdale, PA; step daughter Robbin Korb and husband Jerry of Honesdale. He was preceded in death by his brother Michael and a niece Vanessa.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Mary Magdalen Church in Honesdale on Monday at 10 AM.

Interment will follow in Darling Cemetery. Friends may visit the Hessling Funeral Home, 428 Main St. Honesdale on Sunday from 2-4 and 6-8.
