Martha B. Chicardy Gabella, of Herminie, died Thursday, May 25, 2000. Born in Coral, Pa., she was a daughter of the late Julian G. and Mary Gallo Chicardy. Mrs. Gabella was proprietor of Martha's Candy Supply Shop in Indiana, Pa., and a retired cashier of A&P Tea Co. for 37 years. Martha was a member of St. Edward Church, Herminie, where she was a member of the Altar Rosary Society and the Sunshine Club. She was a member of the VFW Auxiliary Post 8427, Herminie, the UMWA, Associate Sister of Charity at Seton Hill, the M.I.V.A., the Women's Catholic Business Association of Greensburg, and a Red Cross volunteer. She was preceded in death by her husband, Leo; a sister, Margaret Palino; and two brothers , Julian J. and Edward Chicardy. Surviving are two sisters , Frances Dillion of Pittsburgh and Mary Rebovich of Homer City; and several nieces and nephews. Visitation Tuesday at 10 a.m. in St. Edward's Church, Madison Road, Herminie, until the time of Mass to be celebrated at 11 a.m. with Father Lawrence L. Manchas as celebrant. JOSEPHINE GIAQUINTO
Josephine "Pippy" Giaquinto, 83, of Jeannette, died Saturday, May 27, 2000, in UPMC Presbyterian, Oakland. She was born Feb. 9, 1917, in Latrobe, a daughter of the late Anthony and Julia Lattanzio. She was a member of the Ascension Church of Jeannette and its Rosary Altar Society, and the Seneca Club, also of Jeannette. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by two sisters , Mary Dettorre and Louise Egnot; and two brothers , Samuel and Albert Lattanzio. She is survived by her husband, Peter A. Giaquinto; a daughter, Carol Pacek and husband, Regis, of Mansfield, Ohio; a son, Daniel Giaquinto of New Hampshire; two sisters , Ann Adams and husband, Earl, of Latrobe, and Laura Roberts of Miami, Fla.; a brother, Fred Lattanzio and wife, Fanny, of Latrobe; four grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. Friends will be received at the JOHN V. GRAZIANO FUNERAL HOME INC., 228 N. Second St., Jeannette, beginning Monday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated Tuesday at 10 a.m. in the Ascension Church. April M. Kutska, 19, of Belle Vernon, formerly of Monessen, passed away Friday, May 26, 2000. Born May 24, 1981, April was the daughter of George E. "GiGi" and Sue Ann Kolar Kutska of Belle Vernon. A member of the Holy Resurrection Orthodox Church, Belle Vernon, April had graduated from Belle Vernon High School, Class of 1999, with honors. She had currently been a student at Westmoreland County Community College. April was preceded in death by her grandfather, Karl L. Kolar. Survivors include, in addition to her parents, her grandmother, Mrs. Charles (Joann I.) Moore of Alverton; stepgrandmother, Sally J. Kolar of Scottdale; paternal grandparents, John and Lorraine Kutska of Monessen; aunts and uncles, Carol and her husband, Al Waterhouse, of Coal Center, Judy and Bob Glaspey of Charleroi, Joni and Art Trayter of Ruffsdale, Vicki and Mark Altomairi of Monessen, Joan Kolar of Interlachen, Fla., and Elsa and David Howard of Interlachen, Fla.; and numerous cousins. Michael A. Lawrence, 85, of Youngwood, formerly of Norvelt, died Friday, May 26, 2000, in Mt. Pleasant. He was born Sept. 26, 1914, in Mutual, a son of the late Michael S. and Mary Mizenko Lawrence. He retired from ITE Circuit Breaker, South Greensburg. He was a member of Holy Cross Church, Youngwood. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Ann Hazuza Lawrence, and his second wife, Ruth Hranko Lawrence; a son, Gerald S. Lawrence; a brother, John Lawrence; and three sisters , Mary Kolick, Ann Bishop and Margaret Petrick. Lydia E. Hill Mountan, 97, of North Versailles, died Friday, May 26, 2000, at Forbes Regional Health Center, Monroeville. She was born Oct. 6, 1902, in Export, a daughter of the late Odis and Letitia Cline Hill. She was a member of the VIP Travel Club, North Versailles. Besides her parents, she was also preceded in death by her husband, Sidney J. Mountan; and two brothers , Glen and Ray Hill. She is survived by two children, William C. Winstrand of Arcade, N.Y., and Janice M. Krisantz of East McKeesport; three grandchildren, Saundra Winstrand of Buffalo, N.Y., Susan Mediate of North Versailles and Dale Krisantz of Irwin; three great-grandchildren, Keith Ciesla of Buffalo, N.Y., Mark Mediate of North Versailles and Nick Krisantz of Irwin; a sister, Ada Nevling of Florida; also nieces and nephews. Joseph F. Skoloda, 90, of Latrobe, died Friday, May 26, 2000, at home. He was born March 19, 1910, in Mutual, a son of the late Andrew and Mary Onofrey Skoloda. He was a member of St. John the Evangelist Church, Latrobe, and was retired from the Latrobe Die Casting Co. with 46 years of service. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers , Phillip, Edward and George Skoloda; and a sister, Helen Skoloda. He is survived by his wife of 70 years, Christine A. Marnell Skoloda; two daughters , Joann Schmucker of Ligonier and Janet Richards and husband, John, of Latrobe; two sons , Francis Skoloda and wife, Joyce, of Latrobe, and Thomas Jay Skoloda and wife, Dorothy, of Latrobe; four brothers , Andrew, Emil and Michael Skoloda, all of Latrobe, and William Skoloda of Virginia; three sisters , Ann Klobuear of Cleveland, Ohio, Pauline Kemp of New Mexico and Delores Cribbs of Beatty; 13 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren. Louise Z. Bowser Slates, 89, of Irwin, died Saturday, May 27, 2000, in Greensburg. She was born Sept. 5, 1910, in Pitcairn, a daughter of the late Archie D. and Bessie P. (Peirce) Bowser. She was a member of the First United Church of Christ, Irwin, the Order of the Eastern Star Chapter 400 and the West Hempfield Senior Citizens Association. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, William Bowser. Survivors include her husband, Kenneth D. Slates Sr.; a son, Kenneth D. Slates Jr. and wife, Joyce, of Hollywood, Fla.; a daughter, Nancy Gosser and husband, David, of Greensburg; five sisters , Orpha Hilty of Pitcairn, Sue Kline and Helen Brooky of Trafford, Pearl Burkette of Turtle Creek and Jean Milby of Shelocta; four grandchildren, Kenneth D. THERESA L. THORNTON WATSON
Theresa L. Thornton Watson, 98, of North Huntingdon, died Friday, May 26, 2000. She was born Feb. 9, 1902, in Pittsburgh, a daughter of the late George E. and Rebecca ( White house) Thornton. She was a member of St. John's United Church of Christ, Larimer, and participated in the adult Bible class and the women's fellowship. She was a former secretary of the Consistory, a deacon of the church, and was a Sunday school teacher for 50 years. She was also a volunteer for Meals on Wheels for 10 years, a Red Cross volunteer during World War II, and a charter member of the AARP #4373. She was a graduate of the Norwin High School Class of 1920. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Charles B. Watson, on Oct. 2, 1970; three sisters , Carolyn Cooper, Lucy Tharp and Rose Thornton; and four brothers , Samuel, George Jr., Charles T. and James Thornton. Survivors include two sons , Dale T. Watson and wife, Rose, of Fort Pierce, Fla., and Wayne A. Watson and wife, Janet, of North Huntingdon; five grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. Sandra Q. Zarzeczny, 57, of Latrobe, died Friday, May 26, 2000, in IHS at Mountain View, Unity Township. She was born Dec. 31, 1942, in Latrobe, a daughter of the late Francis and Gladys (Nair) Quinn. Prior to her retirement, she was employed by the former Pelican Inc. in New Derry, where she worked for 21 years. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a sister, Sara Frichtel. She is survived by two daughters , Lisa Quinn of New York City and Jamie Zarzeczny at home; two sisters , Kathryn "Kie" Darazio and husband, Robert, of Latrobe, and Frances Piper and husband, Samuel, of Youngstown, Pa.; a brother, William J. FRED ZECKER
Fred Zecker, 89, of Export, died Friday, May 26, 2000. He was born May 13, 1911, in Pristova, Slovenia, a son of Joseph and Emma Zecker. He was retired from Westinghouse Electric in 1972 as a mfg. engineer. He was a member of Export Borough Council for over 30 years, having served as president most of that time. He was the 1982 recipient of the Gateway Publications Man of the Year Award. He also served for many years as a Democratic Party Committeeman for Export Borough. He was past president of the S.N.J.P. Federation of Westmoreland County, a member of the Claridge Male Chorus, and a charter member of the Slovene Cultural Group of Western Pennsylvania . He was also a member of the S.N.P.J. Lodge #317 of Export. He was a member of the Italian American and Polish clubs of Export. He was preceded in death by his wife, Martha Susa Zecker, in 1989; and an infant daughter. Also preceded in death by a brother, Joseph, and sisters , Mary Jug, Rose Kenney, Elizabeth Roscher, Agnes Kenney, Emma Dallape, Sophie Gomez and Frances Rozina. Survived by two sons , Fred W. and wife, Donna, of St. Petersburg, Fla., and Eugene of New Kensington. Also surviving are three grandchildren, Peter, Deanna and Kathleen. JOHN BALSIS
John Balsis, 87, of Oklahoma Borough, died Tuesday, May 30, 2000, in the West View Manor, Washington Township. Born Oct. 22, 1912, in Vandergrift, he was the son of the late August and Pauline Stonevice Balsis. He had lived in the Kiski Valley all his life. Prior to retirement, Mr. Balsis was the manager of Younghans Auto Parts in Vandergrift, with 40 years of service. After his retirement, he worked part-time at the Sowash Auto Parts in Greensburg. He also had driven bus for Edwards Lakes-to-Sea from the Apollo depot. He was a member of the First Evangelical Lutheran Church in Vandergrift, the Vandergrift Lions Club, and enjoyed bowling. Survivors include a son, William of Bethel Park; a daughter, Nancy Kisner of Ibiza, Spain; three grandchildren; and a great-grandson. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Mabel Van Scoyoc Balsis in 1998; and two sisters , Ann Martinisko and Stella Clawson.
