JAMES W. LAUGHLAND JR.
James W. Laughland Jr., 80, of Rostraver Township, died Thursday, May 25, 2000, at his home. He was born in Donora, Nov. 17, 1919, a son of the late James L. and Margaret (Polland) Laughland. Mr. Laughland retired from the P&LE Railroad in 1979. He served as a member of the Belle Vernon Area School Board for 20 years. He regularly attended the Gilmore auctions in Rostraver Township and was active in the West Newton VFW, the American Legion in Artemas, the BVA Quarterback Club, the Slovenic Benefit Singing Society in Collinsburg, the AARP, and Sweeney's Buffalo Club. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He is survived by his wife, Ruth (Whitlatch) Laughland; a son, Donald W. Laughland of Webster; two daughters , Mrs. William (Amy) Strenske of Rostraver Township and Heather Laughland Jampedro of Belle Vernon; seven grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, James Robert Laughland, in 1971; two brothers , Peter Laughland and Robert Laughland; and two sisters , Davina Jarvis and Mary Hazelbaker. Friends will be received Friday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. in the JAMES C. STUMP FUNERAL HOME INC., 580 Circle Drive, Sweeney Plan/Rostraver Township. Funeral services will be held in the funeral home Saturday at 10 a.m. with the Rev. Kent Lighthall officiating. Interment will follow in Mon Valley Memorial Park, Carroll Township.
PAUL V. MAHER
Paul V. Maher, 71, of Bell Township, died Wednesday, May 24, 2000, at his home. Born in Philadelphia, April 11, 1929, he was a son of the late Paul Vincent and Margaret (Markle) Maher. He lived in the Saltsburg area for the past five years and previously resided in New Jersey. Prior to his retirement in 1987, he had been employed by Amtrak as a car inspector at the 30th Street Station in Philadelphia for 35 years. He served in the U.S. Army from 1950 to 1952. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Ruth "Sandy" Maher, in 1987; a brother, John Maher; and a sister, Dorothy Moore. He is survived by a son, Michael Maher of Bell Township; a daughter, Mrs. Billy (Debra) Walker of Charleston, S.C.; two sisters , Mrs. Gabe (Marion) Babjzak of Mays Landing, N.J., and Peggy Gallagher of Drexel Hill, Pa.; and five grandchildren. Visitation for family and friends will be Saturday, May 27, from 3 p.m. until 4 p.m., the time of a memorial service in the CURRAN FUNERAL HOME, 701 Salt St., Saltsburg. JO ANN L. Mc GEE
Jo Ann L. Mc Gee, 49, of 198 E. Ninth St., Fond du Lac, Wis., died Thursday, May 25, 2000, at her residence. She was born July 23, 1950, in Fond du Lac, a daughter of John E. and Jean Berg Edkins. On Sept. 2, 1972, she married Donald S. Mc Gee in Fond du Lac. Mrs. Mc Gee was a member of Covenant United Methodist Church, Fond du Lac. Jo Ann was a lead salesperson for Kohls Department Store for 17 years. She was a 1968 graduate of Goodrich High School and lived in various cities in the United States for 10 years, before returning to Fond du Lac in 1982. Jo Ann enjoyed cooking and baking. Survived by her husband; two daughters , Kelly Mc Gee and Krista (Joe) Lange; a grandson, Keenan; her mother , Jean Edkins; and her grandmother, Ethel Edkins, all of Fond du Lac; four sisters , Jacqueline (and special friend, Alan Fritsch) of Sorensen-Sheboygan, Wis., Janice (Donald) Andrew, her twin, Jennifer (Ron) Schaefer, and Julie (Paul) Holzmann, all of Fond du Lac; and her mother - and Father -in-law, John (Betty) Mc Gee of Greensburg. Preceded in death by her paternal grandmother; maternal grandparents; and her Father . Friends will be received Friday from 4 to 8 p.m. at UECKER-WITT FUNERAL HOME INC., Fond du Lac, Wis. DOROTHY L. MICHEALS
Dorothy L. Micheals, 90, of Connellsville, passed away Thursday, May 25, 2000, at the home of her son, Richard S. Micheals of Greensburg RD3. She was born June 27, 1909, in Connellsville, a daughter of the late Harry and Isabella Moore Matson. She was a lifelong resident of Connellsville and attended Connellsville High School. Prior to her marriage, she had been employed as a telephone operator by Bell Telephone Co. She was an active and faithful member of the Greenwood United Methodist Church of Connellsville, where she was a member and secretary of the church's board of trustees. She was also a member of the United Methodist Women and the Clara DeBolt Circle. She is survived by four sons , Harry J. Micheals and wife, Jane, of Norwalk, Ohio, Harmon W. Micheals and wife, Eileen, of Poland, Ohio, Richard S. Micheals and wife, Nancy, of Greensburg and Marshall R. Micheals Jr. and wife, Donna, of Vermilion, Ohio. Eleven grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren also survive. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Marshall R. Micheals, on Nov. 13, 1998. Anna "Mable" (Wingard) Murray, 89, of Derry, died Wednesday, May 24, 2000. Mable was born Feb. 17, 1911, in Derry. She was the second born of 13 children to the late Theodore "Ray" and Teresa (Callaghan) Wingard. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Kenneth W. "Ken" Murray, in 1977; a daughter, Mary Louise "Mary Lou" Allison, in 1978; and sisters , Elizabeth J. "Betty" Bolino, in 1973, and Marguerite V. "Skee" Ashley, in 1997. She is survived by her daughter, JoAnn Glasser (and her husband, William); and son, Richard K. (and his wife, Dolly) of Latrobe; son-in-law, Leo E. Allison of Derry; 10 grandchildren; and numerous great-grandchildren. Also, brothers , William R. (Bill and wife, Helen) of Youngstown, Ohio, Joseph E. "Ed" of Monroeville, Thomas J. (Tom and wife, Katherine) of Bradenville, Theodore R. Jr. (Hank and wife, Marlene) of Warren, Ohio, John R. (Boomer and wife, Arlene) of Derry; and sisters , M. Marguerite Mowry of Pitcairn, Helen P. Herdman of Kent, Ohio, T. Ruth Urdzik and Patricia L. (Patty and husband, Bob) Jones, both of Derry, and A. Jean Axiotis (and husband, Steve) of Warren, Ohio. Mable was a member of St. Joseph's Roman Catholic Church, Derry, where she was a member of the Altar and Rosary Society, the Catholic daughters of America and served as a cafeteria volunteer. Prior to her retirement, she worked at the Yolanda Shoppe in Derry. She was an avid bowler and enjoyed antiquing, baking, decorating, fashion, gardening, shopping, traveling and playing cards. ROBERT D. NUTTER
Robert D. Nutter, 76, of Foxtown, Pa., died Wednesday, May 24, 2000, in Mt. Pleasant. He was born Jan. 26, 1924, in Greensburg, a son of the late Theodore "Jack" and Bernice Davis Nutter. He was a member of Grace Bible Church, Whyles, Pa., and was a member of the D.A.V. He was a deacon of the church and used his beautiful voice serving God. He was a staff sergeant in the 141st Infantry Regiment while in the Army, serving in North Africa, Italy, and France. He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Nellie B. (Daugherty) Nutter; children: son, Robert D. Nutter Jr. and wife, Barbara, of Atlantic Beach, Fla., son, Dale E. Nutter of Foxtown, daughter, Mrs. Terry (Carol) Trout of Acme, and son, James Nutter and wife, Dorothy, of Acme; a brother, Paul Nutter and wife, Ann, of Smithton; two sisters , Sarah Vincent and Dorothy Komko of Tacoma, Wash.; and a special nephew, Ed Daugherty and wife, Lori, of Foxtown. Rachel Helen Peck, 81, of Greensburg, formerly of Indian Head, died Tuesday, May 23, 2000, in the Oak Hill Nursing Home, Greensburg. She was born June 8, 1918, in Mill Run, a daughter of the late Raymond and Rebecca Rugg Miner. Rachel was a resident of Indian Head for most of her life. She was a loving homemaker and was a demonstrator for Dutchmaid Clothing for 20 years. She was a member of the Indian Head Church of God and was also a member of the Fayette Mountain Craft Club. She is survived by her loving children, John R. Peck and his wife, Joanne, of Normalville, Jerold Peck and his wife, Mary Jane, of Connellsville, James Peck and his wife, Norma, of White , Jean Grimm of Indian Head, Nancy Williams and her husband, John, of Champion, Rose Coffman and her husband, Wendell, of Sterling Heights, Mich., Arlene Ritenour and her husband, Dennis, of Indian Head, and Brenda Kopf and her husband, Rob, of Clarkston, Mich.; 25 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; her sisters , Sybil Beck and her husband, Carl, of Indian Head, Violet Bottomley of Mill Run, Cora Hyatt of Sheridan, Ill., and Cosey brothers and her husband, Clyde, of Connellsville; and several nieces and nephews. Regis "Rip" Peltier, 82, of Jeannette, died Tuesday, May 23, 2000. He was born June 8, 1917, in Jeannette, a son of the late Victor and Mary Breinig Peltier. Prior to his retirement, he was employed by the U.S. Postal Service as a mailman in Jeannette. Regis was a veteran of World War II, having served with the U.S. Army, 79th Division, and was a member of the American Legion Post #344, F.O.E. #844 and the Brotherhood of White Eagles, all of Jeannette. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by two brothers , Harry and George Peltier Sr. He is survived by his wife, Betty Oswald Peltier; three daughters , Pamela Lawson and Lisa Peltier, both of Jeannette, and Cindy Lane and husband, John, of Plum Borough; three sons , Regis A. Peltier Jr. and wife, Joanne, of Ohio, Richard Peltier and wife, Deborah, and Randy Peltier and fiancee, Betty Hoover, all of Jeannette; 12 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. Gladys (Prosser) Price, 81, of 59 Van Voorhis Lane, Monongahela, died Thursday, May 25, 2000, at 1:50 a.m., in Orlando, Fla. Born July 21, 1918, in Washington County, Monongahela, a daughter of Thomas P. and Lillian Prosser. Surviving are her husband, John Y. "Jack" Price of 59 Van Voorhis Lane, Monongahela; also a daughter, Patricia Price; grandchildren, Heidi Holzapfel and David Holzapfel; and a great-grandson, Halston Chase Holzapfel, all of Orlando, Fla.; and a brother, Russell Prosser of Finleyville RD2. Predeceased by two sisters , Lillian Prosser and Dorothy Pompei; and four brothers , Thomas, Howard, Norman, and Arthur Prosser. Burial will be in Orlando, Fla.
FLORENCE A. SCAVUZZO
Florence A. Scavuzzo, 93, of Greensburg, formerly of Jeannette and Venice, Fla., died Thursday, May 25, 2000, in the Newhaven Court at Linwood, Greensburg. She was born Jan. 31, 1907, in Greensburg, a daughter of the late Antonio and Gaetana D'Orio Cipullo. Prior to her retirement, she was the owner/operator of the former Baby Store, also known as the Florence Youth Center of Jeannette, and was a teacher in the Jeannette School District. She was a member of the Ascension Church of Jeannette and the church's Rosary Altar Society and Senior Citizens Group. Mrs. Scavuzzo was a charter member of Jeannette District Memorial Hospital Women's Auxiliary and a member of the Cercemaggiore Association of Pa. While living in Florida in the early 1970s, she brought together a group of friends to celebrate the first "Jeannette Day." She was very proud that this tradition is still celebrated annually with former Jeannette residents gathering from all over Florida to honor a town she dearly loved. Mrs. Scavuzzo was also an advocate of education for women since she graduated from the University of Pittsburgh in the class of 1929. Because of this, she and her husband established the Theresa Bruno Scavuzzo Memorial Award in honor of her mother -in-law. This annual award is presented to the highest ranking female graduate at Jeannette Senior High School. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Salvatore B. Scavuzzo in 1993. She is survived by two daughters , Mercedes Getto and husband, Robert, of Jeannette and Adrienne Walsh and husband, James, of Harrison City; a sister, Mary Petrarca of Derry; six grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. Charles F. Smith, 71, of Conemaugh Township, died Thursday, May 25, 2000, in Latrobe Area Hospital. He was born May 4, 1929, in Elsley, Md., a son of the late Sherman A. and Virgie Lena (Emerick) Smith. He lived in the Saltsburg area most of his life. Prior to his retirement in 1991, he had been employed by Robicon Corp. in Plum Borough for 22 years. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Guy Smith; and a sister, Dorothy Smith. He is survived by five sons , Robert Smith of Keyser, W.Va., Charles F. Smith Jr. of New Alexandria, Ralph McDonald, Quint McDonald and Andy Hoyle, all of Saltsburg; two daughters , Mrs. Jerry (Bonnie) Shook of Keyser, W.Va., and Mrs. Frank (Dawn) Kowalewski of Clarksburg, Pa.; a sister, Ethel Barton of Delmont; and eight grandchildren.
