Pennsylvania Obituary and Marriage Records, 1947-2010

WILLIAM EMERSON SCHROEDER

William Emerson Schroeder, of Amelia Island, Fla., formerly of Fox Chapel, died Monday, May 22, 2000. Age 87. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Margaretta Wood Oliver; four children, William Emerson Schroeder Jr. of Wayland, Mass., Augustus Oliver Schroeder of Fox Chapel, Margaretta Wood Schroeder of Gibsonia, and Mary Schroeder Eichenlaub of Saxonburg; and seven grandchildren, as well as, two brothers , Frank Canfield Schroeder Jr. and A. Reed Schroeder of Sewickley. He was preceded in death by his brother, John Slack Schroeder. He was born in Sewickley, Sept. 1, 1912, and attended the Sewickley Academy, Phillips Academy, Andover and Princeton University Class of 1934. In August of 1925, he became the youngest Eagle Scout in America with the honor of going to Washington to shake hands with President Coolidge. After college, Bill worked in the oil fields of West Virginia, Michigan, and Illinois. During World War II, he served with the Counter Intelligence Corps in New York City, N.Y., during 1942 and 1943 with the rank of staff sergeant. In July of 1944, he was transferred to Australia and after training went with the Pacific Theater forces to New Guinea, and the Philippines (Leyte, Mindoro, and Luzon). In the spring of 1945, he received a field promotion to 2nd Lieutenant and was discharged in the fall and returned to Pittsburgh. In 1946, he was one of the four brothers who founded Schroeder brothers (now Schroeder Industries) of Pittsburgh. The company continues in its initial business of manufacturing and distributing mining machinery and industrial oil filters. He retired as president in 1970. Bill had a lifelong interest in nature and particularly birds. While living in Fox Chapel, he was very active in developing parks and park programs in the Borough. Later in Florida and up to the present, he had been an active supporter of the Audubon Society. While living in Fox Chapel, he was a member of the Vestry of the Fox Chapel Episcopal Church. Bill had an indomitable spirit which brought him many friends wherever he lived. A memorial service will be held Thursday at 2 p.m. in the Amelia Island Plantation Chapel with the Rev. John Harland, pastor, officiating. Burial will follow in Homewood Cemetery in Pittsburgh at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Red Cross, 751 Riverside Ave., Jacksonville, FL 32204. OXLEY-HEARD FUNERAL DIRECTORS, Fernandina Beach, Fla., in charge of arrangements.

WILLIAM N. SHOEMAKER SR.

William N. "Pinky" Shoemaker Sr., 72, of Elizabeth Township, passed away Wednesday, May 24, 2000, at home. Born March 13, 1928, in Williamsburg, Pa., a son of the late John and Esther Garner Shoemaker. He was a retired truck driver with Kiefer Coal and Supply Co., Bethel Park, Pa. Also a member of Bethesda United Presbyterian Church in Elizabeth and a past president and current member of the Old Time Fiddlers Association of Pennsylvania . Survivors include his wife, Oleda E. Werner Shoemaker; a daughter, Gloria J. Wylie of Elizabeth; four sons , William Jr. of Sutersville, John C. of West Newton, Joe and Dean A., both of Elizabeth Township; two sisters , Helen Savitts of Saxton, Pa., and Nelda Opfer of Elizabeth; three brothers , James and John, both of Huntingdon, Pa., and Harry of Elizabeth Township; nine grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; an uncle; nieces and nephews. Friends received in the PAUL E. BEKAVAC FUNERAL HOME, 221 Second St., Elizabeth, Thursday from 7 to 9 p.m. and Friday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Funeral services Saturday, May 27, at 11:30 a.m. in the funeral home chapel with the Rev. George Leitze officiating. Interment to follow in Jefferson Memorial Park. Memorial contributions to the Bethesda United Presbyterian Church.

AIRGOOD

Edwin J. Airgood, 88, of Pitcairn, died Wednesday, May 24, 2000. Husband of Margaret E. (Nash) Airgood. Father of Shirley E. Wilson of Pitcairn, LaVerne Hoffman of Windber, Pa., Barbara McElfresh of Pitcairn, Frank P. Airgood of Pitcairn and the late William E. Airgood. Brother of Ruth Howard of Irwin, Paul Airgood of Wilmerding, Marie Dry of Canonsburg, Ethel Syster of Butler and Catherine Root of Pitcairn. Also survived by 14 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren and a great-great-grandchild. Friends received Thursday and Friday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the WM. O. PEARCE FUNERAL HOME INC., 318 Wall Ave., Pitcairn, where services will be held Saturday at 11 a.m.

VICTORIA D. BARNOT

Victoria D. Barnot, 81, of 724 Baltimore St., North Belle Vernon, died Thursday, May 25, 2000, at 7:03 a.m. peacefully surrounded by her family at her home. Born Jan. 10, 1919, in Uniontown, she was the daughter of the late Andrew and Helen Gryziak Colatta. Mrs. Barnot was a resident of North Belle Vernon for the past 50 years. She was a homemaker, a member of St. Sebastian Roman Catholic Church, and the Catholic daughters of the Americas B.V. Court 1522. She is survived by her beloved husband, John J. Barnot, to whom she would have been married 60 years on Nov. 30, 2000; a son, John D. Barnot of Monroeville; three daughters and two sons -in-law, Ravenna and Andrew Stefanick of Belle Vernon, Jacqueline and Stanley Koliscak of Belle Vernon, and Vickilyn Barnot of Level Green; two sisters , Mary Casievich of New Salem and Angela Lazarz of Uniontown; three grandsons, Jonathan Stefanick, Justin Stefanick, and Jason Barnot Koliscak; and a great-grandson, Jacob Noah Stefanick. She was preceded in death by four brothers , Joseph Colatta, Charles Colatta, Stephen Colatta, and John Colatta; and a sister, Ann Pinchak. Visitation will be held Sunday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the LEONARD J. PARZYNSKI FUNERAL HOME, family owned and operated, 626 Broad Ave., Belle Vernon. Prayer service will be held Monday at 10:30 a.m. in the funeral home, followed by a concelebrated Funeral Mass at 11 a.m. in St. Sebastian R.C. Church with the Rev. John R. Cindric, V.F., pastor of St. Sebastian R.C. Church, Belle Vernon, and the Rev. Andrew M. Kawecki, pastor of St. Mary's R.C. Church, Leckrone. Entombment will take place in Belle Vernon Cemetery Mausoleum. St. Sebastian Legion of Mary and C.D. of A. Belle Vernon Court 1522 will recite the rosary Sunday at 3 p.m. and the Belle Vernon Knights of Columbus Council 3026 will hold a wake service Sunday at 7 p.m. in the funeral home.

BERGAD

William "Bill" Bergad, 88, a well-known and longtime resident of Irwin, passed away Tuesday, May 23, 2000, in Jeannette District Memorial Hospital. He was preceded in death by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Abraham Bergad; his loving wife, Rose; sister, Mary; and brothers , Max and Saul. He is survived by a daughter and her husband, Bette Jo and Howard L. Greenberger of New York City, N.Y.; and a son and his wife, Robert and Pearl Bergad; and also grandsons, Aaron and Corey, all of Minneapolis, Minn. Bill was a hometown boy who made Irwin his life. After high school with a stint on the football team, Bill attended the University of Pittsburgh, where he received his pharmacy degree. In 1931, after working as a pharmacist in several Pittsburgh drug stores, he married Rose Reisberg of McKeesport and settled back in Irwin, where he opened his own drug store on the current site of the post office. In 1955, he moved the drug store across the street to the former site of Fink's Pharmacy, now a parking lot at Second and Main. In business for more than 40 years, Bill's many customers could always depend on him to fill their prescriptions any time of the day or night, and deliver them. He never complained about middle-of-the-night emergencies simply stating that his customers came first. After retirement, Bill could now afford some hard earned leisure years with his wife, Rose. Viewing sports events and reading were his favorite activities. Bill was an active member in the Irwin Chapter of AARP. He only recently gave up golfing with the Seniors and enjoyed daily morning meetings with his many friends over coffee at Isaly's. Bill touched the hearts and lives of many Irwin residents. He will be dearly missed by family and friends. Friends will be received at the WILLIAM SNYDER FUNERAL HOME, 521 Main St., Irwin, Friday from 9 to 10 a.m. Graveside services will follow at Temple Emmanuel Cemetery, Hempfield Township. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Norwin Public Library, 299 Third St., Irwin, PA 15642.

LARRY G. CHARLEY

Larry G. Charley, 53, of Greensburg, died Wednesday, May 24, 2000, in the Westmoreland Regional Hospital, Greensburg. He was born Oct. 18, 1946, in Greensburg, a son of the late Anthony and Olga "Alice" Lishego Charley. He had been employed by the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation and was a member of St. Michael's Orthodox Church, South Greensburg, and was a U.S. Army veteran of the Vietnam War. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Diane Charley. He is survived by his wife, Virginia Zedek Charley; a daughter, Angela Charley of Greensburg; three stepsons, Ryan and his wife, Tricia Zedek, of Long Beach, Miss., Kevin and his wife, Shirley Zedek, serving with the U.S. Army in Hawaii, and Keith Zedek at home; a brother, John J. and his wife, Judy Charley, of Greensburg; and a nephew, Jerry Charley of Greensburg. He is also survived by several aunts, uncles and cousins. Friends will be received at the BACHA FUNERAL HOME INC., 516 Stanton at Green streets, Greensburg, Thursday from 7 to 9 p.m. and Friday from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Funeral service will begin in the funeral home Saturday at 9:30 a.m. and immediately follow at St. Michael's Orthodox Church, South Greensburg, with Archpriest John Nosal officiating. Interment with full military honors provided by the VFW Post 33 Honor Guard of Greensburg will follow in the Hillview Cemetery, Hempfield Township. Memorial services will be held in the funeral home Thursday and Friday at 8 p.m. Family suggests memorial contributions to the American Diabetes Association, Westmoreland County Chapter, 300 Penn Center Blvd., Pittsburgh, PA 15235, or St. Michael's Orthodox Church Building Fund, 601 Wirsing Ave., Greensburg, PA 15601.

PAULINE COLES FEW

Pauline Coles Few, 86, of Pittsburgh, formerly of Jeannette, died Monday, May 22, 2000, after a lingering illness. Friends will be received at the JOHN V. GRAZIANO FUNERAL HOME INC., 228 N. Second St., Jeannette, Friday from 7 to 9 p.m. Additional visitation and viewing will be held at the Hopewell Baptist Church, Jeannette, Saturday from 10 a.m. until the time of services at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Gerald M. Smith giving the eulogy and the Rev. Richard Freeman presiding.

MARJORIE FOX FRUND

Marjorie Fox Frund, 76, of Scottdale, passed away peacefully Wednesday evening, May 24, 2000, at her residence, with her loving family at her bedside. Marge was born in Mt. Pleasant, Sept. 11, 1923, a daughter of the late Sarah Faust Fox Zultek. Marge was a devoted mother , grandmother and great-grandmother to her family and for many years a housekeeper to numerous area families. She was a member of the Pennsville Baptist Church and formerly affiliated with the First Baptist Church in Scottdale. Marge was a member of the Greater Scottdale Senior Citizens and the McKenna Adult Day Care in Greensburg. Marge is survived by her loving family; her five children, Saundra Cagnina and husband, Salvatore, of Connellsville, Judy Gross of Scottdale, Vanetta Lincoln of Mt. Pleasant, Duane R. Frund Jr. and wife, Beulah, of Scottdale RD1, and Mark Frund and wife, Suzanne, of Centreville, Va.; 11 grandchildren, Tina Prothero and husband, William, of Winter Park, Fla., Sally Dodd and husband, Brian, of Connellsville, Carrie Katrinak of Centerville, Ohio, Michael Gross of Scottdale, Jennifer Magyor and husband, Troy, of Ruffsdale, Melissa Lincoln of Mt. Pleasant, Dana, Duane and Erik Frund of Scottdale, and Alexandr and Kaitlyn Frund of Virginia: four great-grandchildren, Brawn Dodd, Aaron Prothero, Maria Prothero and Elijah Magyor; a brother, Richard Fox of Maryland; a sister-in-law, Eileen Fox of Scottdale RD1; two nephews and a niece, Richard and Dennis Fox and Kathy Weltz, whom she raised; and a close friend, Agnes Oldland of Scottdale. In addition to her mother , Marge was preceded in death by her husband, Duane R. Frund Sr., on Sept. 23, 1991; her stepfather, John Zultek; four brothers , William, Paul, Thomas and Donald Fox; three sisters , Mildred Knipple, Janet Shallenberger and Betty Urick; and several nieces and nephews. Family and friends will be received at the ROBERT B. FERGUSON FUNERAL HOME, 105 Spring St., Scottdale, (724) 887-5300, (email: rferg.ata1usa.net), Friday from 7 to 9 p.m. and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Additional viewing will be held in Pennsville Baptist Church Sunday from 1 to 2 p.m., the hour of funeral services with the Rev. Dr. Terry Murray and the Rev. Robert Bixel co-officiating. Graveside committal services and interment will follow in Mt. Joy Cemetery, next to her late husband. The family would like to extend special appreciation to the caregivers of Westmoreland Hospice, Area Agency on Aging, and Westmoreland Home Health.

THOMAS PHILLIPS JOHNSON

Thomas Phillips Johnson, on Tuesday, May 23, 2000. Husband of the late Jane Moore Johnson. Father of Thomas Phillips Johnson Jr. of Poultney, Vt., and James Moore Johnson of Telluride, Colo. Also survived by three grandchildren, Peter T., Jesse D. and Asa J. Johnson; and a sister, Winifred Clive of Orlando, Fla. Janet Eichhorn Klinefelter, formerly of Etna, died Tuesday, May 16, 2000, at Rancho Cordova, Calif. Wife of Thomas Klinefelter. mother of Kathleen Higgins and Walter Klinefelter. Grandmother of Jennifer Higgins and Brandon and Krista Klinefelter. Sister of Lillian and Calvin Eichhorn. Memorial service will be held Sunday, June 4, at 4 p.m. at Emmanuel Lutheran Church, Grant and Highland avenues, Etna.

CARL J. KOSHEBA

Carl J. Kosheba, 51, of Columbus, Ohio, suddenly on Wednesday, May 24, 2000. Mr. Kosheba was an operations manager for Holland T.N.T., a trucking firm. He was the beloved stepfather of Kisten Palm of Columbus, Ohio, and Mariah Zelinsky of Atlanta, Ga.; son of Leona (Weise) Kosheba of Indiana Township; brother of Mary Karscig of Shaler Township and Dave E. Kosheba of Indiana Township; uncle of Stephanie and Steven Karscig; also three grandchildren. Preceded in death by his Father , Carl J. Kosheba. Friends received at the FRANK R. GEORGE KREHLIK

George Krehlik, 88, of Loyalhanna, died Wednesday, May 24, 2000, in IHS at Mountain View, Unity Township. Born April 24, 1912, in Loyalhanna, he was a son of the late Andrew and Ann Kochis Krehlik. He was a member of St. Rose Church, Latrobe. He was retired from Teledyne-Vasco Co., Latrobe. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Edith Oglietti Krehlik, on March 29, 1976; a sister, Ethel Krehlik; two brothers , John Krehlik and Michael Krehlik; and a daughter-in-law, Judy Betts Krehlik. He is survived by a son, George A. Krehlik of Derry; a daughter, Mary Ann Krehlik of Loyalhanna; a brother, Andrew Krehlik of Latrobe; a sister, Ann Mittaly of Loyalhanna; four grandchildren, Todd Krehlik, Ryan Krehlik, Chad Krehlik and Amy Rowan; three great-grandchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews. Friends will be received from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday in the JOHN J. LOPATICH FUNERAL HOME INC., 601 Weldon St., Latrobe. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated Saturday at 9 a.m. in St. Rose Church with the Rev. William P. Donahue as celebrant. Interment in St. Mary's Cemetery, Unity Township. PETER F. LaCIVITA

Peter F. LaCivita, 77, of East McKeesport, died Wednesday, May 24, 2000, at Forbes Regional Hospital, Monroeville. Husband of Gilda Perrone LaCivita. Father of Judie Schneider of Murrysville, Robert LaCivita, Ph.D., of Auburn, Ala., and Thomas LaCivita of Hampton, S.C. Son of the late John and Violet Lucarelli LaCivita. Brother of Louis LaCivita of California, Mary Greslin of West Mifflin, Josephine Brush of East McKeesport, Margaret Ratesic of East McKeesport, Michael LaCivita of Virginia and the late Lucille Lokay and Tony LaCivita. Also six grandchildren. Friends received at the JAMES F. FILIA FUNERAL HOME, 354 Marguerite Ave., Wilmerding, Friday from 2 to 9 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial at St. Jude the Apostle Church Saturday at 10 a.m. Memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, 241 Fourth Ave., Pittsburgh, PA 15222. He was a member of the Wilmerding Optimists Club and past president of the Pittsburgh Home Builders Association. He was a self-employed plasterer and home builder for 20 years and was retired from the University of Pittsburgh after 15 years of service as the planning and scheduling classroom utilization manager. He was a World War II Marine veteran and the author of "Heroes Under the Big Dipper," of which he was honored by the U.S. Marine Corps Heritage Foundation.
