ROSE G. WHALEN

Rose G. Whalen, 83, of 410 Valley Brook Drive, Lancaster, formerly of Greensburg, died Sunday morning, March 5, 2000, at the Essa Flory Hospice Center, Lancaster, after a brief illness. She was the wife of Regis W. Whalen. They celebrated their 59th wedding anniversary on July 8. Born in Pittsburgh, she was the daughter of the late Daniel B. and Genevieve M. Wissel Gallagher. She worked as a clerk for U.S. Steel in Pittsburgh for 14 years. She was a member of the St. John Neumann Catholic Church, Lancaster. Surviving besides her husband are two sons , Timothy T., husband of Susan, of Bridgeport, W.Va., and Patrick D., husband of Christine F., of Lancaster. Also six grandchildren; three sisters , Catherine Anderson of Williamsport, Pa., Elizabeth Glancy of Pittsburgh, and Jean Brown of Greensboro, N.C. Friends will be received at the WILLIAM F. CONROY FUNERAL HOME INC., 2944 Chartiers Ave., Sheraden, (412) 331-5192, Wednesday from 7 to 9 p.m. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated in Holy Innocents Catholic Church, Sheraden, Thursday, March 9, at 10 a.m.

KENNETH R. YOWAN

Kenneth R. Yowan, 80, of Greensburg, formerly of White Oak, on Saturday, March 4, 2000, at Westmoreland Regional Hospital, Greensburg. He was born July 6, 1919, in Collinsburg, a son of the late Joseph and Johanna Krec Yowan. Husband of the late Edith C. Boyd Yowan. Mr. Yowan was a member of the Bryn Mawr Church of Christ in White Oak, a retired electrician for Westinghouse Electric Corp., and a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He is survived by a son, Kenneth A. Yowan of Westminster, Md.; a daughter, Linda J. Smith of Herminie; four grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; five brothers , John of Ocean Isle Beach, N.C., Larry of Belle Vernon, Warren of McKeesport, Frank of Wilkins Township, and Robert of Monongahela; three sisters , Josephine "Jo" Yowan and Fran Yowan, both of West Newton and Ann Barrett of Florida; also nieces and nephews. Friends will be received Monday from 7 to 9 p.m. and Tuesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the JAYCOX-JAWORSKI FUNERAL HOME, 2703 O'Neil Blvd., McKeesport. Service in the funeral home chapel Wednesday at 11 a.m. with Charles Owston, minister, officiating. Interment in the West Newton Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Bryn Mawr Church of Christ, 2901 State St., White Oak, PA 15131.

ROSCOE NICHOLAS CUP
Roscoe Nicholas Cup, 81, of Avonmore, died Saturday, March 4, 2000, at Latrobe Area Hospital. He was born Nov. 10, 1918, in Edri, Pa., a son of the late Nicholas and Kathryn Trygar Cup. Mr. Cup lived in Avonmore most of his life. He was a coal miner for 42 years and retired in 1981 from Canterbury Coal Co. A World War II veteran, he had served with the U.S. Army in the European Theatre with the 531st Anti-Aircraft Battalion, where he achieved the rank of private and was awarded the Purple Heart. Mr. Cup was a member of the St. Ambrose Roman Catholic Church in Avonmore, the Polish National Alliance #1234 in Avonmore, American Legion Post 57 in Saltsburg, VFW in Avonmore and Nowrytown Sportsmen's Club. He was an avid gardener and enjoyed hunting and reading. He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Stella Rachwal Cup of Avonmore; a daughter, Patricia Shannon and her husband, Scott, of Sugar Land, Texas ; two sons , Ronald Cup and his wife, Kathy, of Avonmore and Raymond Cup and his wife, Minde, of Apollo; two brothers , Paul Cup of Euclid, Ohio, and George Cup and his wife, Lorraine, of Pittsburgh; four sisters , Antoinette Cup of Pittsburgh, Ann Yerep of Indiana, Pa., Mary Suwinski and her husband, Steve, of Saltsburg, and Helen Kochonowski and her husband, Albin, also of Saltsburg; and two grandchildren, Stephanie and Stephen Cup of Avonmore. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Mildred Cup. Friends were received Sunday from 6 to 9 p.m. and will be received Monday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. in the KELLY L. CORRIDONI FUNERAL HOME LTD., 400 Indiana Ave., Avonmore. Mass of Christian Burial Tuesday at 10 a.m. in St. Ambrose Roman Catholic Church, Avonmore, with the Rev. William J. Homolak as celebrant. Interment in Westview Cemetery, Avonmore. Parish wake service will be conducted Monday at 2 p.m. in the funeral home.

RICHARD R. DENARO

Richard R. DeNaro, 62, of Latrobe, died Friday, March 3, 2000, in the Latrobe Area Hospital. He was born Jan. 11, 1938, in Greensburg, a son of Martha Jablonsky DeNaro of Latrobe and the late John D. DeNaro. Prior to retirement, he had been employed by the Hockensmith Co., and later by Kennametal Inc. He was a member of St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, Latrobe, and had served in the Pennsylvania Army National Guard. In addition to his mother , he is survived by his wife, with whom he would have celebrated their 42nd wedding anniversary on April 26, 2000, Lorrean C. Levendusky DeNaro; two daughters , Dona M. DeNaro of Latrobe and Dyan L. DeNaro of Indiana, Pa.; a brother, Francis L. and his wife, Karen E. DeNaro, of Elliottsburg; two sisters -in-law, Gertrude and her husband, Lawrence Enick, of Penn and Loretta M. Levendusky of Latrobe; a brother-in-law, Thomas and his wife, Rose Levendusky, of South Greensburg; and several nieces and nephews. Friends will be received at the BACHA FUNERAL HOME INC., 516 Stanton at Green streets, Greensburg, Monday from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated Tuesday at 10 a.m. in St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, Latrobe, with the Rev. Thomas M. Lukac as celebrant. Entombment will follow in St. Clair Mausoleum, Hempfield Township.

ANNUNSIO DeSTEFANO

Annunsio DeStefano, 86, of Penn Township, died Saturday, March 4, 2000, in Jeannette District Memorial Hospital. He was born Feb. 17, 1914, in Montella, Italy, a son of the late Mark and Orsola DeStefano. Prior to his retirement, he was employed by Westinghouse Air Brake in Wilmerding. He was a member of St. Barbara Church in Harrison City. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Leonard DeStefano; and a sister, Nellie DiBiase. He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Esther Caputo DeStefano; a son, Mark L. and wife, Lisa DeStefano, of Latrobe; a daughter, Regina M. and husband, Mark Schmiedel, of Plum; a sister, Caroline DiBiase of Wall; and two grandchildren, Jennifer and Jason. Friends were received at the JAMES E. LINDSAY FUNERAL HOME INC., Main Street, Harrison City, Sunday from 7 to 9 p.m. and will be received Monday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated Tuesday at 10 a.m. in St. Barbara Church with the Rev. V. Paul Fitzmaurice as celebrant. Interment will follow in Woodlawn Cemetery, Penn Township. A vigil service will be held Monday at 8:30 p.m. in the funeral home.

Catherine A. "Kit" Flaherty, 90, of Penn Hills, on Friday, March 3, 2000. Sister of the late James P. Flaherty, the late John B. Flaherty and the late Marie Grindle. Survived by sisters -in-law, Rosella "Sis" Flaherty and LaVerne Peters. Dear aunt of James and Kathleen Flaherty of Murrysville, Stan and Kate Podkul of Murrysville, Terrence M. JOSEPH E. HARHAI

Joseph E. Harhai, 66, of New Stanton, formerly of United, died Friday, March 3, 2000, in Monsour Medical Center, Jeannette. He was born May 12, 1933, in United, a son of the late Harry and Macrina Pawlyshyn Harhai. He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two infant brothers , John and Michael; brothers , Andrew, Steve, Ted and George Harhai; and a sister, Mary Beluschok. He is survived by a son, Nikolai Harhai; two sisters , Anne Radocaj of Greensburg and Mrs. Alexis (Eva) Jaroshevich of Virginia Beach, Va.; a brother, Harry Harhai and his wife, Jean, of Irwin; and nieces and nephews. Joseph A. Healy, 71, of Wilkinsburg, suddenly on Wednesday, March 1, 2000. Husband of Frances "Frankie" Power Healy. Father of James Alles, Kathleen Alles Grady, Barbara Alles Barry, Patricia Alles Taylor, Elizabeth Alles Johnson, Christopher Alles and Marie Alles Stangel. Also survived by seven brothers , two sisters and 20 grandchildren. Friends received at the T.D. PAUL SERBANJAK

Paul "Turk" Serbanjak, 77, of Herminie (Evanstown), died Saturday, March 4, 2000, in the Westmoreland Regional Hospital, Greensburg. He was born April 19, 1922, in Evanstown, Hempfield Township, a son of the late Frank and Mary (Boltes) Serbanjak. Paul "Turk" was a U.S. Army Air Corps veteran, having served during World War II with the 364th Fighter Group. Prior to retirement, he was employed as a coal miner with Consolidation Coal Co., having last worked in the Hutchinson Mine. Paul "Turk" also was self-employed as owner/operator of Paul's Mobil, which included gasoline and groceries, and also was the neighborhood gathering place and official "card room." Paul "Turk" was one of the founding members of the "Little Sewickley Anglers." He was a member of the Herminie S.N.P.J. Lodge #87, and was an avid fisherman who especially enjoyed east coast fishing trips with his family and friends. He also coached boys baseball and girls softball. Paul "Turk" is survived by his wife of 50 years, Anna Rebecca (Karr) Serbanjak; sons , Paul "Turk" at home, John "Pickles" and his wife, Tammy, of Jeannette and Russell and his wife, Joni Karr, of Evanstown; daughters , Karen and husband, David Murray, of Darragh and Patty and husband, Jim Smith, of Wyano; 12 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; a brother, Frank Serbanjak and his wife, Donna, of Evanstown; a sister, Mary Sova and husband, Ed, of Keystone; and numerous nieces and nephews. Friends were received Sunday from 7 to 9 p.m. and will be received Monday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the JOSEPH W. NICKELS FUNERAL HOME INC., Herminie, where services will be held Tuesday at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Kenneth Bossart officiating. Interment with military honors accorded by the South Greensburg American Legion Post #981 will follow in the Westmoreland County Memorial Park, Hempfield Township.

S. WILLIAM STOUFFER

S. William Stouffer, 89, died Friday evening, March 3, 2000. He was born in Kewanee, Ill., and attended Purdue University, where he graduated in 1931 with an MSME degree. Following graduation he was employed by Jones & Laughlin Steel Corporation, holding various positions in the maintenance and tin mill departments. In 1940, he received a Sloan Fellowship from MIT University where he graduated with an MBA degree. In 1941, he transferred to National Tube Company, serving as assistant chief engineer until 1948, when he returned to J&L Steel to work in the maintenance and construction departments. In 1960, he was appointed director of construction and maintenance and in 1970 vice president of engineering and construction. He retired in 1973. He resided in Moon Township during his years at the J&L Construction Department. He served as director for the Iron & Steel Institute. He served on the Moon Township School Board. He was active in Sharon Presbyterian Church, serving as an elder, and also as chairman of the building committee during construction of the new sanctuary in 1968. After retirement, he moved to Mt. Lebanon and was active in the West Penn Live Steam Model Railroad Club, serving as secretary- treasurer from 1976. He designed and constructed a 1-inch scale model of a Chessie Greenbrier 605 locomotive with tender and baggage car, which were operated on tracks of West Penn Live Steamers located outside Beaver, Pa. He also built a 1-inch scale model caboose. These models were donated to the Chesapeake and Ohio Historical Society. The locomotive and baggage car are on exhibit at the B&O Museum in Baltimore, Md., and the caboose is on display at the Historical Society Archive Center in Clifton Forge, Va. Mr. Stouffer is survived by his wife, Margaret; a sister, Elizabeth Stouffer; three daughters , Lesley Troy, Judith Thomas and Mary Lucas; stepson, William Schauffler; seven grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. Visitation will be Monday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at FREYVOGEL-SLATER FUNERAL DIRECTORS, 112 Fort Couch Road (opposite Lazarus, South Hills Village), Bethel Park. Friends will be received following a memorial service to be held in Sharon Presbyterian Church, Moon Township, at 11 a.m. Tuesday, March 7. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Sharon Presbyterian Church, Salvation Army or St. Clair Hospital.

ANDREW G. ULTIS

Andrew G. Ultis, 76, of North Irwin, died Saturday, March 4, 2000, in Monsour Medical Center, Jeannette. He was born Aug. 20, 1923, in Penn Shaft, a son of the late Paul and Sadie (Vargo) Ultis. He was a retired inspector for Fisher Body, Dravosburg, with 32 years of service. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, 3937 Quartermaster Gas Supply Unit. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Velma S. (Geiger) Ultis, in 1999; two brothers , Samuel and Paul Ultis; and a sister, Julia Budesky. Survivors include a son, Ronald and wife, Wilma, of North Irwin; four granddaughters; a great-grandson; and a great-granddaughter. Friends will be received Monday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the VINCENT V. RODGERS FUNERAL HOME, 805 Pennsylvania Ave., Irwin. Funeral service will be held Tuesday at 10 a.m. in the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Randall Roda officiating.

ROBERT V. ANDREWSON

Robert V. Andrewson, 70, of Miramar, Fla., formerly of Herminie, died Sunday, March 5, 2000, in Lakeland, Fla. He was born July 18, 1929, a son of the late Vincent and Rose Serro Andrewson. He graduated in 1947 from Sewickley Area High School. He is survived by his wife of 31 years, Larue Cash Andrewson; three sons , Jim Smith and grandsons, Jimmy and Jason Smith of Atlanta, Ga., Vincent of Miami, Fla. and Tony of Boynton Beach, Fla.; a brother, Donald Andrewson of Wendel; and two sisters , Margaret McCarthy of Greensburg and Shirley Bailley of North Huntingdon. A memorial service will be held Saturday, March 11, at 11 a.m. in St. Bart's Church, Miramar, Fla.

AGNES M. BACAN

Agnes M. Bacan, 78, of Greensburg, died Monday, March 6, 2000, in Westmoreland Regional Hospital, Greensburg. She was born May 2, 1921, in Whitney, Pa., a daughter of Earl "Pete" and Esther Dick May. She was retired from the printing business and had worked for various printing companies in Greensburg. She was a member of the Christ United Methodist Church in Youngwood. Also, she was past governor of the Quota Club, past president of the Business and Professional Women's Association of Greensburg, and past chairperson of the Ladies Auxiliary Board with the Westmoreland Regional Hospital. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her granddaughter, Regina Louise. Surviving are her husband, John P. Bacan; grandchildren, Rebecca A. Bacan and Kenneth D. Bacan and wife, Pamela; and a great-granddaughter, Riley, of Greensburg; a daughter, Lillie Davis and husband, Arthur, of Export; brothers , Earl May Jr. of Coudersport and Dean May of Latrobe; and a sister, Donna Woodward of Armbrust. Also several nieces and nephews. Friends will be received at the KEPPLE-GRAFT FUNERAL HOME INC., 524 N. Main St., Greensburg, from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday. Services will be held at the funeral home Thursday at 10:30 a.m. with the Rev. Dr. Merritt Edner officiating. Interment will follow in St. Clair Cemetery. The family requests memorial contributions to either the Christ United Methodist Church, 100 Lincoln Ave., Youngwood, or the Make-A-Wish Foundation, 555 Grant St., #425, Pittsburgh, PA 15219.
