THOMAS TYSON ZIEGLER
Thomas Tyson Ziegler, 82, of Derry, died Tuesday, May 2, 2000, in Latrobe Area Hospital. He was born July 27, 1917, in Derry, a son of the late Charles A. Ziegler, who died in 1974, and Lillian Tyson Ziegler, who died in 1964. Prior to retirement, Tom was eastern editor for Saddle & Bridle Magazine and was an authority on bloodlines of American saddle-bred horses. A graduate of Notre Dame University, with a master's degree from Columbia University, he was a World War II veteran of the U.S. Army Air Corps, having served throughout the U.S. and Guam while working on the "Manhattan Project." Tom previously worked in public relations for TWA in New York City and for 20 years he and his Father operated Ziegler's Bakery in Derry. He was deeply interested in and considered an authority of local history. Tom was a member of St. Joseph Roman Catholic Church of Derry and a member and historian for the Indiana, Greensburg, Derry and Scottdale historical societies. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Charles C., in 1959; and two sisters , L. Louise Ziegler, in 1983, and Margaret O'Brien, in 1996. Tom is survived by his beloved brother and his family, Joseph J. Ziegler of Derry; three nephews, J. Gregory Ziegler and his wife, Patricia, of Greensburg, Charles F. O'Brien and his wife, Elaine, of Cherry Hill, N.J., and Thomas J. O'Brien and his wife, Doreen, of Springfield, Ill.; two nieces, Margaret O'Brien Smith and her husband, Seamus, of Seattle, Wash., and Marjorie L. Ziegler of White sboro, N.Y.; grandnephews and grandnieces, Sean, Christopher (godchild), Timothy and Brien Mumau, Andrew Ziegler (godchild), Christopher and Thomas O'Brien, Ryan, Patrick, Kathleen Murphy, Kaelen Aramaki, Lisa Copeland, Suzanne McDowell and Cathleen Betz; also 12 great-grandnephews and grandnieces. Family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday and Friday in the MICHAEL J. QUINLISK FUNERAL HOME, 548 N. Chestnut St., Derry. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Saturday in St. Joseph Church, Derry, with the Rev. Michael McIlwain, O.S.B., as celebrant. Interment will follow in St. Vincent Cemetery, Latrobe. Memorial contributions may be made to the Derry Area Historical Society or St. Joseph Church. VFW Post 444 will conduct a military service at 7 p.m. Friday in the funeral home.
CLARA W. BRIDGE
Clara W. Bridge, 85, of Latrobe, died Tuesday, May 2, 2000, in Latrobe Area Hospital. She was born Dec. 27, 1914, in Pittsburgh, the daughter of the late Ernest and Wilhelmina Renner Guter. She was a retired switchboard operator at St. Vincent College. She was a member of Holy Family Roman Catholic Church, the Catholic daughters of America, and the Holy Family Rosary Altar Society. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by three brothers , Joseph, Ernest and Richard Guter. She is survived by her husband, Charles A. Bridge; two sons , Maurice E. Bridge and his wife, Louise, of South Windsor, Conn., and Dennis C. Bridge of Frederick, Md.; a daughter, Mrs. Michael (Anita) Pohland of Latrobe; six grandchildren, Deanna, Jared, Laura, David, Michael and Suzanne; and two brothers , Paul Guter of Latrobe and Robert Guter of Ligonier. Friends received Wednesday from 7 to 9 p.m. and Thursday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the FREDERICK FUNERAL HOME INC., 1543 Ligonier St., Latrobe. PHILIP J. DeIVERNOIS JR. III
Philip J. DeIvernois Jr. III, of Monroeville, died Monday, May 1, 2000, at the VA Medical Center, Aspinwall. He was a graduate of the Carnegie Institute of Technology. Mr. DeIvernois retired from the Union Switch and Signal Division of Westinghouse Airbrake Co. He was a licensed electrical engineer and worked on railroad yard safety, braking and classification systems. Also he was retired as a lieutenant colonel in the U.S. Army Reserves. He served in Luzon, Philippines, during World War II. Mr. DeIvernois was a member of the Monroeville Republican Committee, the Monroeville Library Board, and Senior Member of the I.E.E.E. Also a member of the Reserve Officers Association and a member of Rosecrest Lutheran Church in Monroeville. He is survived by his wife, Virginia (Lenigan); the following children, Philip IV of Annville, Pa., Renee LeMay of Maryland, W. Peter of Wexford, and Douglas X. of Fleetwood, Pa.; brother of Jeanne Holleran of Wexford, Robert of Aliquippa, and Bud of East Palm Beach, Fla. Also seven grandchildren. Seibert D. "Bub" Fry, 64, of Export, died Tuesday, May 2, 2000. He was born Feb. 29, 1936, in Monroeville, a son of the late Seibert and Mary Davis Fry. Also preceded in death by his first wife, Lenora McCurdy Fry; and a sister, Eleanor Fry. Mr. Fry was a former employee of McKinney Drilling, and was retired from Douglas Pyle. He was a member of the Operating Engineers Local 66. Also he was a member of St. Mary Church, the Italian American Club and the Polish Club, all of Export. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy. Bub is survived by his wife, Mary Shero Fry; a son, Arthur Paul Fry and his wife, Tammy, of North Huntingdon; three daughters , Mrs. Ronald (Rebecca) Painter of North Huntingdon, Candy Fry and companion, Jim Johnson, of Wendel and Mrs. Gary (Lorie) Smith of North Huntingdon; four stepchildren, Mrs. Victor (Kathie) Katkowski, Albert Kemerer and wife, Debbie, Richard Kemerer and wife, Sandy, and Robert Kemerer, all of Export; a sister, Gwen Slater of the state of California; 12 grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Harry L. Gower, 72, of Luxor, died Tuesday, May 2, 2000, in Allegheny General Hospital, Pittsburgh. He was born Aug. 14, 1927, in Luxor, a son of the late Clarence and Elva Hainan Gower. He was retired from Kennametal Inc. He was a member of the Hannastown Social Club and the Old Crabtree Sportsmen's Association. He was a veteran of World War II, having served in the U.S. Coast Guard Merchant Marines. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers , Wayne, Robert and Thomas Gower. He is survived by his wife, Mary Hriczik Gower; a son, Larry Gower and wife, Donna, of Greensburg RD12; a daughter, Lynn Nair of Ligonier; two grandchildren, Lori and Sherri; two brothers , Paul Gower and wife, Mildred, of Westpoint and Francis Gower of Luxor; and several nieces and nephews. ANDREW J. NEWILL
Andrew J. Newill, 89, of Mt. Pleasant RD5, died at the home of his sister, Helen R. Beal, in Kecksburg, Monday, May 1, 2000. He was born March 21, 1911, in Kecksburg, a son of the late Earl C. Newill and Edith Stairs Newill Harman. He was the oldest member of the Kecksburg Church of God, where he was a life elder, council member, council president and Sunday school teacher. He was a member of the Westmoreland Botanical Society. He and his late wife owned and operated the Kecksburg Grocery Store for 29 years and he was retired from the Pennsylvania Railroad. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his first wife, Lucy Bielski Newill; an infant son; his wife of 56 years, Marie Workman Newill, on Sept. 1, 1999; and his granddaughter, Karla Karl, on April 19, 1996. He is survived by three children, Myrna Armbrust and her husband, James, of Irwin, Ruth Ann "Dolly" Queer and her husband, Paul, William C. Newill and his wife, Debra, all of Kecksburg; seven grandchildren, Dan, Dwight and Douglas Armbrust, Jeffrey and James Queer, Karen and David Newill; 12 great-grandchildren; sisters , Helen R. Beal of Kecksburg and Mrs. Ralph (Jean) Porch of Bella Vista, Ark.; five sisters -in-law, Ruth Sanner, Patricia Phillips and Betty Workman, all of Carmichaels, Virginia Lint of Norristown, and Jane Kovacina of Kecksburg. Jennie A. Planinsek, 91, of Latrobe, died Sunday, April 30, 2000, at her home. She was born Aug. 17, 1908, in Greensburg, a daughter of the late Frank and Frances Smith Kebe. She was a member of St. Cecilia Church, Whitney. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Louis J. Planinsek Sr., on April 1, 1997; three brothers , Louis, Edward and John Kebe; and three sisters , Mary Cvitkovic, Frances Bradish and Irma Piazza. Survivors include a son, Louis J. Planinsek Jr. and his wife, Anne, of Bel Air, Md.; three daughters , Joanna Dorko and her husband, Emil, of Bradenville RR1, Ernestine "Teena" Anania and her husband, John, of Wexford and Dr. Frances Planinsek of Longmont, Colo.; a brother, William Kebe of Greensburg; two sisters , Margaret Bell and Evangeline Saffron, both of Greensburg; six grandchildren, Suzanne Dorko, James Dorko, Carol Dorko, Kenneth Dorko, Elizabeth Goodwin and Vivian Fuchs; eight great-grandchildren, Jennifer, Kaitlyn, Austin, Luke, Paige, Ethan, Emary and Spencer; and a number of nieces and nephews. SAMUEL R. SCHRODER
Samuel R. Schroder, 67, of Manor Borough, went home to be with the Lord Monday, May 1, 2000, in Jeannette. He was born Nov. 17, 1932, in Manor, a son of the late Howard O. and Dorothy (Spackman) Schroder. He was a special freight distribution manager at Conrail for 39 years. He was a member of the Gideons International, former president of Westmoreland County Library Association, and president of the Manor Public Library. A member of the First United Methodist Church of Manor, chairperson of the Pastor Parish Relationship Committee and Sunday school teacher. He was a member of White Mountain Lodge. Also he was a trumpet player for a local group, "The Keyboards, Horn, and Jane." He was an accomplished oil painting artist and was a former member of the Norwin Art League. He devoted years to community affairs in Manor. He is survived by his wife, Loretta (Scheuerle) Schroder; a son, Jeffrey Schroder and wife, Charlene, of Manor; a daughter, Diane Brown and husband, Thomas, of Greensburg; and six grandchildren, Melissa Schroder, Amy Schroder, Christina Schroder, Joshua Schroder, Taylor Brown, and Andrew Brown. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Howard F. Schroder; a sister, Meredith Allshouse; and a grandson, Jason Schroder. Friends received at the VINCENT V. Lillian Barberi Virone, 79, of Jeannette, died Tuesday, May 2, 2000, in Westmoreland Regional Hospital, Greensburg. She was born June 1, 1920, in Beaverdale, a daughter of the late Carmen and Fannie Bartillot Barberi. She was a member of the Assembly of God Church, Jeannette, and its Women's Missionary Council. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, John J. Virone Sr., in 1976; and four sisters , Sara Gonzales, Josephine Bianco, Angeline Strayer and Carmella Hewitt. She is survived by six daughters , Caroline Barrett and her husband, Lee, of Arizona, Eleanor Stoves and her husband, Roy, of Irwin, Cecelia Kasparek and her husband, Dale, of Greensburg, Rosemarie Olecki and her husband, Thomas, of California, Nina Virone and Virginia Virone, both of Pittsburgh; a son, John J. Virone Jr. (with whom she resided); a sister, Rose Catalano of Jeannette; seven grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. Friends will be received at the JOHN V. George Curryer Weber, on Sunday, April 30, 2000, at his residence in Wexford. Age 76. Beloved husband of Caroline Gier Weber and the late Frances Wright Weber. Father of Dee Weber of Northampton, Mass., Ruth Weber and her husband, David Heyrend, of Denver, Colo., and Jean Weber and her husband, George Kulakowski, of Punxsutawney; stepfather of Janet White and her husband, Isaiah, of San Jose, Calif., Eric Gier and his wife, Lynnete, of Carpinteria, Calif., and the late Karl R. Gier. Grandfather of George Karl Kulakowski and Christopher David Kulakowski; stepgrandfather of Corey White , Kayla White , Bryn Gier, Natalie Gier, and Joshua Morton. Brother of the late John Weber; also survived by his sisters -in-law, Jean Potter, Ellie Wright and Betty Weber; and two nieces and two nephews. Mr. Weber was in born Tampico, Mexico, on Aug. 13, 1923. He was a World War II veteran and a graduate of Stevens Institute of Technology with a degree in mechanical engineering. He was employed as a project engineer and consultant in the United States, Columbia, and Turkey, retiring in 1984. Mr. Weber's passions in life were his family and its history; bridge which he both taught and relished playing; the study of the English language; a large collection of humor; mathematics and all its wonder, and woodworking. He was an aficionado of the great Gilbert and Sullivan and collected and enjoyed their works for most of his life. An avid correspondent, bookbinder, chess player, art lover, photographer, he was viewed as a true Renaissance man. A memorial service will be held at the Unitarian Universalist Church of the North Hills Sunday, May 7, at 4 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to the Children's Memorial Fund or the Memorial Garden Fund, both of the Unitarian Universalist Church of the North Hills, 2359 W.
