Donald Edward Thomas
The graveside service for Donald Edward Thomas will be at 2 p.m. today at Eagle Point National cemetery. Pastor Craig Harris of the Medford First Free Methodist Church will officiate.

Mr. Thomas, 64, of Medford, died Sunday (June 22, 2003) at his home.

Memorial contributions may be made to Providence Community Health Foundation, Hospice, 1111 Crater Lake Ave., Medford, OR 97504.

He was born Feb. 25, 1939, in Hoquiam, Wash., to Raymond and Lillian Mills Thomas. On Nov. 15, 1959, in Tillamook, he married Sharon Strong, who survives. They moved to the Rogue Valley in 1963 from Port Angeles, Wash.

Mr. Thomas owned and operated Don Thomas Appliance Repair, retiring in 2001.

He served in the U.S. Navy from 1958 to 1962.

Mr. Thomas enjoyed collecting, driving and spending time with his family.

Survivors, in addition to his wife, include a daughter, Sandra Diane Matthews, Medford; a son, Steven Edward, Medford; a brother, Richard Raymond, Coos Bay; and four grandchildren.

Friends may pay their respects from 10 a.m. to noon today at Rogue Valley Funeral Alternatives, 550 Business Park Drive, Medford.

Robert Arthur Evans Sr.
The funeral for Robert Arthur Evans Sr. will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Eagle Point National cemetery.

Mr. Evans, 80, of Medford, died Saturday (June 21, 2003) at his home.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Canyonville Post 5714, Box 550, Canyonville, OR 97417.

He was born Oct. 11, 1922, in Des Moines, Iowa. On Feb. 29, 1984, in Flagstaff, Ariz., he married Jeanie Clark Sailers, who survives. They moved to Oregon from San Diego and lived in the Rogue Valley/Canyonville area for 10 years.

Mr. Evans was a self-employed restaurateur and mortgage broker.

He was a member of Canyonville VFW Post 5714.

Mr. Evans enjoyed traveling with his wife in his motor home.

Survivors, in addition to his wife, include three sons, Robert Jr., Eugene, Christopher, Klamath Falls, and Chauncey, San Diego; a daughter, Marianne Kontrovich, Escondido, Calif.; a brother, Richard; seven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Friends may pay their respects from 3 to 7 p.m. Thursday at Conger-Morris Funeral Home in Medford.

Gaylord Sherman Vestal Jr.
The memorial service for Gaylord Sherman Vestal Jr. will be at 2 p.m. Friday at the First United Methodist Church in Ashland. The Rev. Michael Powell will officiate. A reception will follow in the Fireside Room at the church.

Mr. Vestal, 81, of Ashland, died Thursday (June 19, 2003) at Rogue Valley Medical Center.

Memorial contributions may be made to the First United Methodist Church Memorial Fund, 175 N. Main St., Ashland, OR 97520.

He was born Jan. 15, 1922, in Ashland, to Gaylord Sherman Vestal Sr. and Della Yaryan Vestal. He graduated from Ashland High School in 1939 and from Southern Oregon Normal School, now Southern Oregon University, in 1942. In 1949, he received a master’s degree from the University of Oregon.

Mr. Vestal taught junior high school in Ashland, Condon, Portland, and Haigler, Neb.

He was drafted into the Army Air Corps in 1942, and served in the South Pacific, India and China.

Mr. Vestal was a member of the First United Methodist Church, where he served as treasurer.

Survivors include a sister, Margaret Taylor, Ashland; and a brother, Robert V., Ashland.

Arrangements: Litwiller-Simonsen Funeral Home and Cremation Center, Ashland.

William ‘Bill’ Arthur King
The funeral Mass for William "Bill" Arthur King will be at noon Thursday at Shepherd of the Valley Catholic Church in Central Point. Rev. Jim Clifford will officiate. Interment will be in Eagle Point National cemetery.

Mr. King, 75, of Talent, died Sunday (June 22, 2003) at Medford Rehabilitation and Healthcare Center.

He was born Aug. 6, 1927, in Portland, to Arthur Julian and Marie Dooley King, along with an identical twin, who preceded him in death. He attended Catholic and public school in Portland. He attended college in Portland and received a bachelor’s degree in social work, and later a master’s degree in social work in British Columbia, Canada.

Mr. King worked at various social work jobs in Portland, as a social worker at Mental Health and Sequoia Community Center in Fresno Calif., and at the California Correctional Medical Facility in Fairfield, Calif., for seven years. He also worked temporarily as a warden in Canada and as a correctional probation officer in California.

He served in the European Theater during World War II and was a psychiatric social worker in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War.

Mr. King was a member of Volunteers for Social Action in Fresno, Calif., and worked for a short time in the civil rights movement in the 1960s. He also volunteered with the State Medical Reserve in California. He was a member of Unit 8 of the Disabled American Veterans of Medford, and a DAV life member.

He enjoyed working on boat models and VCR taping.

He is survived by his wife, Carol of Talent.

Friends may pay their respects from 9 to 11 a.m. Thursday at Rogue Valley Funeral Alternatives, 550 Business Park Drive, Medford.

Alice Elizabeth Ward Henry
The memorial service for Alice Elizabeth Ward Henry will be at 3 p.m. Friday at Barnett Woods Retirement Home, 2979 Barnett Road, Medford. Pastor Chad McComes of Set Free Christian Fellowship will officiate.

Mrs. Henry, 102, of Medford, died Monday (June 23, 2003) at Waterford at Three Fountains Nursing Facility in Medford.

Memorial contributions may be made to Kindred Hearts Care Service, 2979 Barnett Road, Medford, OR 97504, or Set Free Christian Fellowship, 1025 Court St., Medford, OR 97501.

She was born March 7, 1901, in Milwaukee, to Haslie E. and Frances Eileen (Whalen) Ward. She graduated from St. Joseph School of Nursing in Milwaukee in 1920. On March 22, 1928, in Phoenix, Ariz., she married Forrest Alfred Henry, who died in 1990. She lived in San Diego from 1928 until 1980, when she moved to the Rogue Valley.

Mrs. Henry was a registered nurse and homemaker.

She enjoyed gardening.

Survivors include two daughters, Lois Ann Henry Fritz, Medford, and Mary Frances Henry Bird, Ashland; nine grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and one great-great-granddaughter. She was preceded in death by a son, Keith Robert; a daughter, Alice Ellen Kotula Williams; two sisters, Edith Erbach and Ilene Stegerwald; an infant brother, George Ward, and twin brothers, George and Edwin Ward.

Arrangements: Hillcrest Memorial Park and Mortuary, Medford.

John ‘Johnnie’ W. Bratton
The memorial service for John "Johnnie" Woodrow Bratton will be at 4 p.m. Saturday at the Medford Seventh-day Adventist Church. Pastor Dan McCullouch will officiate.

Mr. Bratton, 90, of Medford, died Thursday (June 19, 2003) at Rogue Valley Medical Center.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Student Aid Fund, c/o Medford Seventh-day Adventist Church, 1900 Greenwood St., Medford, OR 97504.

He was born June 6, 1913, in Athens, Vt., to John and Lillian (Moore) Bratton. In 1943, he married Ruby Thornton, who preceded him in death. On Jan. 2, 1960, in Medford, he married Burnadine Meilicke, who survives.

Mr. Bratton owned and operated Bratton Reforestation, Inc. of Medford since 1981 and remained active in the business until his death.

He began working in logging camps in 1929. After moving to Medford from Sutherlin in 1960, he continued working throughout Oregon and Northern California in logging, site preparation, reforestation and road building. He also did predator control work for Medford Corporation and Boise Cascade, and was named "Timber Baron Von Porcupine" by the Southern Oregon Timber Association.

He was a member of the Medford Seventh-day Adventist Church, the Southern Oregon Timber Association and the National Rifle Association. In past years, he was active in competition shooting and earned many medals for his marksmanship.

Mr. Bratton enjoyed driving his little gray Toyota pickup, hunting and fishing, collecting guns and working in the woods.

Survivors, in addition to his wife, include four sons, Josh Bratton, Medford, Terrance L. Bratton, Dorena, Dan Meilicke, Gold Hill, and Bill Meilicke, Medford; a daughter, Teri Haraden, Gaston; a sister, Vera Holm, Sutherlin; 12 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by three brothers, four sisters and a great-grandson.

Samuel Woodford Hanks
Samuel Woodford Hanks, 66, of White City, died Sunday (June 22, 2003) at his home. No service is planned.

He was born Sept. 24, 1936, in Fletcher Okla., to Charles and Mamie Hanks.

Mr. Hanks was a machinist for Weyerhaeuser Company for 32 years. He moved to the Rogue Valley in 1988 from Coos Bay.

He served in the U.S. Navy from 1958 to 1962.

Mr. Hanks enjoyed camping, hunting and fishing.

Survivors include three sons, David F. and Kenneth M., both White City, and Samuel J. Hanks, North Bend; two brothers, Glenn, in Iowa, and Byron, Sacramento, Calif.; and two grandchildren.

Arrangements: Perl Funeral Home, Medford.

Joseph Michael Smith
Joseph Michael Smith, 71, of Central Point, died June 14, 2003, at his home. No service is planned. Interment will be in Eagle Point National cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to a favorite charity.

He was born Sept. 12, 1931, in Omaha, Neb., to Joseph and Irene (Devitt) Smith. He graduated from Creighton Preparatory High School in Omaha, Neb.

Mr. Smith was a self-employed commercial artist. He lived in the Rogue Valley for many years.

He served in the U.S. Air Force from 1955 to 1958.

Survivors include a cousin, Mary Ann Wager, Council Bluffs, Iowa; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a half-sister, Mary Jane Melcher.

Barbara Ann Middaugh
Barbara Ann Middaugh, 76, of Medford died Sunday (June 22, 2003) at Rogue Valley Medical Center. A celebration of life will be held in early August.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Rogue Valley Manor Foundation Hospital Operating Fund, 1200 Miramar Ave., Medford, OR 97504.

She was born July 24, 1926, in Lakewood, Ohio, to Benjamin and Beatrice (Lewis) Chase. She received a degree in education from Ohio State University in 1947. On August 6, 1949, she married Frank Richard "Dick" Middaugh, who survives.

Mrs. Middaugh was active in a range of social issues related to seniors. She served on the Rogue Valley Council of Governments Senior Advisory Council and prior to moving to Oregon served as a member of the Senior Citizens Commission in San Jose, Calif. She also taught English and citizenship to people who were studying to become citizens of the United States.

She was a member of St. Mark’s Episcopal Church in Medford.

Mrs. Middaugh was an avid quilter and reader of mystery novels.

Survivors in addition to her husband, include three sons, Richard, Hamburg, N.Y., and Thomas and James, both Portland; two brothers, Benjamin, Catawba Island, Ohio, and Jeffrey, Avon Lake, Ohio; and seven grandchildren.

Larry Paul Allen
The funeral for Larry Paul Allen will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Central Point. Bishop Ron Wells will officiate. Interment will be at Rock Point Pioneer cemetery in Gold Hill.
Mr. Allen, 26, of Central Point, died Tuesday (April 8, 2003) in Central Point.

He was born Feb. 16, 1977, in West Valley City, Utah, to Steve and Bonnie Roberts Allen. He moved to the Rogue Valley eight years ago from Elko, Nev.

Mr. Allen was a concrete finisher. He worked with his brother at Wilkerson Concrete for 10 years.

He especially enjoyed spending time with his daughter, Haley Jo Allen, and riding dirt bikes.

Survivors include his daughter, Haley Jo Allen, Medford; his parents, Bonnie and Steve Allen, Central Point; and a brother, Rod Wilkerson, Gold Hill.

Friends may pay their respects from 3 to 5 p.m. today at Rogue Valley Funeral Alternatives, 550 Business Park Drive, Medford.
